The Bossa Nova Modern Quartet - Bossa Nova Jazz Samba (1963)

I think Caetano's picks for our 2m hits celebration are guided by his personal preferences. Since the first day I met Caetano he always says this is the album I need to look for in terms of excellence on Bossa Jazz instrumental music from the 60's. That's why Caetano pleases us with the reposting of The Bossa Nova Modern Quartet, an obscure group assembled by Sinter in the early 60's. Obscure no more, now we have this album taken from the original master tapes and personnel listing, never made public before this post. Courtesy, Caetano Rodrigues.

This is The Bossa Nova Modern Quartet - Bossa Nova Jazz Samba (1963), for Sinter (Musidisc subsidiary), featuring Jorginho (sax, flute), Plinio (drums), Luiz Marinho (bass) and Claudio das Neves (vibraphone). I though Ed Lincoln would be one of the musicians as he delivers several compositions. Taken from the master tapes, the music is 100% clean, available on FLAC lossless files and traditional MP3s. This is the kind of release that you do not need to use Loronix Preview Center to make your decision. Tracks include:

Mariza - A Suave Mariza (1959)

Caetano Rodrigues music for tonight is being carefully prepared by our engineers, meanwhile, I want to show one of the albums that I was looking for many years, courtesy of a great friend and one of the nicest guys I had the chance to meet at Loronix, the legendary Mauro R. V. I told before and I want to say again, Mauro R. V. learned from scratch how to make vinyl transfers and just get some minor cosmetic advices of mine. He also used his own resources to buy a scanner, just to improve his contributions. I'm really glad that Mauro has now a scanner, this is one of the greatest albums cover I have ever seen. Let's see.

This is Mariza - A Suave Mariza (1959), for Copacabana, featuring the Brazilian singer Mariza, later known as Marisa and finally as Marisa Gata Mansa, perhaps by the association with this fantastic cover with the cat. Marisa was a very close friend of Dolores Duran and one of the best performers of her repertoire. She started her career in the early 50's, being also an important Bossa Nova singer, performing at Beco das Garrafas and other nightclubs. This is her debut LP after recording to earlier albums with Moacyr Silva. Marisa died very recently in 2003. Tracks include:

Varios Artistas - Musica Popular Brasileira em Expansao (1965)

I'm sure you will be amazed, once again Caetano pleases us with another album with lots of fascinating details. I have searched for this one on every discography, auction site, search engines and I could not gather a single mention. If you Google "musica popular brasileira em expansao", the result is null. Anyway, this is not what makes this album a treat. Let's see.

This is Aecio Flavio e Sexteto, Berimbau Trio e Quinteto Sambatida - Musica Popular Brasileira em Expansao (1965), for Festival. Maestro Aecio Flavio is a well-known Brasilian artist that takes part on this session with a sextet on eight songs, Berimbau is the legendary Bossa Nova instrumental trio that brings the bassist Bituca, Wagner Tiso and Paulinho Braga and Quinteto Sambatida is so far an enygma. Bituca sings track 01 - Cancao do Sal with Aecio Flavio Sexteto and I will ask for Caetano Rodrigues help to review this album and explain who exactly is Bituca. Tracks include:

"In 1965, the producer Ismael Correa was given a task by the Festival Label. He was to bring together on one LP, three of the most significant groups from the Minas Gerais instrumental Bossa Nova scene (unknown at the time on the Rio - Sao Paulo axis). It would be just a good compilation album, if it was not for the curious participation of the Berimbau Trio bass player, nicknamed Bituca who sang "Cancao do Sal" with the sextet of the pianist Aecio Flavio. Later he changed back to his real name: Milton Nascimento." - Caetano Rodrigues

Final and important message: you will see bellow a new Loronix feature, made available only for testing purposes. There you can have a "test drive" on four tracks of this album, including Cancao do Sal with Milton Nascimento vocals. I need feedback on this new feature to decide for a purchase and implementation on a regular basis. Please use comments section to provide feedback. Thanks in advance. Tracks include:

Garota de Ipanema - Trilha Sonora Original do Filme (1967)

Very wise of Caetano to provide a better copy of this album in the beginning of the year when Bossa Nova makes its 50th anniversary. Additionally, it is a perfect album for starters, the friends who are making the first steps toward the music from Brazil and Bossa Nova years. The repertoire is 100% Bossa Nova with several Antonio Carlos Jobim and Vinicius de Moraes compositions. This album was already released last year, but this new copy provided by Caetano really worth the upgrade. Tracks include:

Conjunto de Jazz Bossa Nova - Brasil Bossa Nova (1963)

I thought I knew everything about Bossa Nova discography after managing Loronix albums for more than a year. Unfortunately, when you have a collector such like Caetano Rodrigues on your side, it is silly to think you know everything. Caetano has a strange relationship with his collection, he loves his albums, keeping everything organized by sections in his place, which is such like a record store of our dreams, but he thinks that everybody has the music he only has. I got amazed with this album, which I did not have idea that exists, and Caetano got amazed to know that I don't have it.

You will understand what I'm saying with the last post tonight, which will be one of the greatest albums available at Loronix, and in spite of Caetano thinks that everybody has it, I'm quite sure that nobody had the chance to know. Such like this one.

This is Conjunto de Jazz Bossa Nova - Brasil Bossa Nova (1963), for RCA Victor, featuring a quintet of bass, flute, violao, drums, sax and trombone. Personnel listing is partially identified and Caetano should be pleased if our community identifies the remaining musicians. Brasil Bossa Nova is a great Samba Jazz session, so far one of the greatest releases in the style at Loronix. Thanks Caetano. Tracks include:

Announcement | 2 Million Hits Celebration

Hello, good evening! I'm worried if Loronix is keeping you too much busy than usual. After the release of yesterday's Escola Naval Concert, we are now starting what several friends were demanding, Caetano Rodrigues celebration to the achievement of 2,000,000 (two million) page views, a really important milestone. Several friends have been monitoring Loronix page view counter to capture the right moment of the 2 million hits and the mighty Mauro R.V. could make it with only one hit delayed, as you can check at the picture he sent to us. The event happened today at 10:08.23 a.m. Thanks Mauro R.V. for getting this screen shot.

Well, it is now official, Loronix 2 million hits celebration has started, and our engineers are making the final adjustments on Caetano Rodrigues music that should come very soon. Caetano sent a couple of albums that will drive us crazy, stay tuned.

Varios Artistas - Show Escola Naval (1959)

Hello, good evening! This is exactly what you are thinking ... the history of Bossa Nova right in front of you. Everybody was waiting for this anthological concert and this post landmarks a series of events scheduled at Loronix to celebrate 50 years of Bossa Nova, since the release of Elizeth Cardoso´s - Cancao do Amor Demais in 1958, which is considered the beginning of the of Bossa Nova movement. Thanks to everybody involved on the effort of bringing this historical document to Loronix and don't miss Caetano Rodrigues special celebration gift when we reach 2 million hits tomorrow. Let's see.

This is Show da Escola Naval (1959), featuring the live recording of the anthological Bossa Nova concert produced by Ronaldo Boscoli at the Escola Naval, Rio de Janeiro, November 13, 1959, featuring Alaide Costa, Carlos Lyra, Chico Feitosa, Irmãos Castro Neves (Oscar, Mário & Ico), Lúcio Alves, Luiz Eça, Roberto Menescal and Sylvinha Telles. Escola Naval is a military facility in Rio de Janeiro and you should agree this is not a usual place to hold a Bossa Nova concert. The audience was perhaps a blend of military and Bossa Nova fans, and according with Ruy Castro's Chega de Saudade book, the theater had a capacity of 600 seats and almost 1,000 people attended.

This live recording has approximately 65 minutes running time and tons of details that are sure to amaze us, like the way some classical songs were performed in the beginning, several interesting conversations between the performers, with some really nice moments with Lucio Alves and Sylvinha Telles and Ronaldo Boscoli effort to define Bossa Nova to this brand new 1958 audience. I urge Loronixers to use comment section for feedback and corrections to this really important document, our first Bossa Nova anniversary event. Tracks include:

Mauricio Einhorn & Sebastiao Tapajos - Mauricio Einhorn & Sebastiao Tapajos (1984)

It has been more than a year since we made the last Mauricio Einhorn album at Loronix. However, Mauricio Einhorn music is across several albums available at Loronix as composer or sideman. I had the chance to listen to this one for the first time this week and my first idea was to listen again the other ones, Mauricio Einhorn - ME (1980) and Mauricio Einhorn - Jugando en Buenos Aires (1985) and they are also fantastic. I urge Loronixers to feedback this release with Mauricio Einhorn with Sebastiao Tapajos and the special guest Arismar do Espirito Santo. Let's see.

This is Mauricio Einhorn & Sebastiao Tapajos - Mauricio Einhorn & Sebastiao Tapajos (1984), for Barclay/Ariola, featuring the Brazilian bassist Arismar do Espirito Santo. We have a great session here with five Mauricio Einhorn and Sebastiao Tapajos compositions on Side A and a single track on Side B, the one that I like most 06 - Suite pra Detinha (Mauricio Einhorn / Sebastiao Tapajos). These are fantastic tunes and perhaps they were written across the recording session since Sebastiao Tapajos said they went to studio with no rehearsals. Tracks include:

Paulinho e Sua Orquestra - Metais e Surdina

According with Loronix Department of Statistics, directed by our very good friends Martoni and Waldemar, Loronix will be achieving tomorrow 2,000,000 page views. I think they made a good job, by the time I'm writing these lines, we have reached 1,994,139 and our daily average is 4,984. Caetano Rodrigues has been working really hard today on a selection that should bring us to heaven tomorrow and Tuesday and I urge Loronixers to come to our website tomorrow and check what Caetano has prepared, which is so far a very keep secret by him.

I will try to reciprocate Caetano with an album of one of the artists that he like most, Paulinho Magalhaes or Paulinho Baterista, or just Paulinho that I'm quite sure he does not have on his collection. Let's see.

This is Paulinho e Sua Orquestra - Metais e Surdina (no date), for Euterpe, featuring the Brazilian drummer Paulinho Magalhaes on a very obscure session with a constellation of Brazilian musicians, including Julio Barbosa, also known as Julinho, Jadir de Castro, Rubens Bassini, Geraldo Miranda and many others. Music Video - Manha de Carnaval | from Orfeu Negro (1959)

Hello, good evening! And Happy New Year! I made today an important achievement on my Bossa Nova education, watching for the first time the original 1959 Marcel Camus Orfeu Negro (Black Orpheus) movie. Now I understand why this movie had a major role on leverage Bossa Nova popularity outside of Brazil, it is a nice movie 50 years later; I can't realize how good it would be watching for the first time in 1959. I decided to start 2008 with this excerpt of Orfeu Negro, when Orfeu shows his new song for the first time to two kids with Eurydice dancing around the place. The song is Manha de Carnaval.

Hope uEnjoy!

Happy New Year | Copacabana Celebration by Pictures

Let's play with this Reveillon celebration at Copacabana. This panorama was taken today from my building at noon, it is a 180 degrees panorama. The beach seems normal, such like any given summer day. The idea is to take a new picture every three hours, so we can check how this place gets full of people as time goes by. The next update will be at 3pm. See you there.

Hope uEnjoy!

12:00 a.m.

download the original, here

03:00 p.m. update

This is the 3pm update, no major changes after three hours, except by the boats. The boats are coming with the fireworks that were originally placed at the beach, a nice decision taken to make everything as safe as possible. Do not miss the original panorama, I did not see an airplane crossing the sky and this is a problem when you have to stitch 10 photos to make a panorama like this one. You will see what happened with the plane at the original panorama Do not miss the next update at 06pm. See you there.

Hope uEnjoy!

06:00 p.m. update

Here we go on our 6pm update, I'm afraid this should be the last one since my camera is very simple and with no capabilities to shot night pictures. We can see some real action this time, one of those big cruiser ships took position to watch the fireworks and people starts concentrate in the middle of the beach. I heard about a major change this year, instead of setting up several stages across the beach with different music styles, only a single stage will be make available this year in the middle of the beach with sound and real-time video along the place. Let's check. Do not miss the last and final update, if exists.

Hope uEnjoy!

Hermeto Pascoal e Grupo - Festa dos Deuses (1992)

We closed 2006 with a Luiz Bonfa wearing a tuxedo, in the spirit of the New Year's Eve celebration. I'm a superstitious parrot; so it is better do the same in 2007. We are closing 2008 with an artist that represents the music from Brazil, a real ambassador that promotes our music across the globe, Hermeto Pascoal. This white cover represents peace, and it is the color people use to wear in Brazil in New Year Eve celebration. The title has the words Festa and Deuses, just to bring us good luck in 2008. Anyway, in spite of this choice, driven by the occasion, this is a truly awesome album that had prematurely gone out of print. Let's see.

This is Hermeto Pascoal e Grupo - Festa dos Deuses (1992), for Philips. Hermeto Pascoal liner notes is the best approach to review Festa dos Deuses, made available bellow. Have a nice 2008. Tracks include:

Festa dos Deuses / Fest of the Gods is a work that I call Universal Music in all its senses: rhythmic, harmonic and melodic and fundamentally original.

I am happy to have several v
ery special guests on this disk, like Brazilian President Collor de Mello, physical education teacher Fabíula Pascoal and the great actor and poet Mario Lago. Each of them sings marvelously well within the "sound of the aura," sensitively captured. It is virtually impossible to explain with words and adjectives what the "sound of aura" actually is, but one thing I do know: it depends greatly upon the musicality and perception of the musician.

Then there is she, who said to me on the telephone: "Godfather, I can only reach from a low E until the F on he 5th line of the music staff," but as the recording progressed, she got more and more relaxed until she was able to reach a high D. Because of this she ended up recording a full 7 tracks with us. I have the pleasure to present you Luciana Souza, a new and beautiful voice.

I am suspect when I speak about these great musicians, my brothers in sound in the group: Carlos, Jovino, Itibere, Marcio, Fabio and Pernambuco, but I simply must thank them for all they give of themselves, so much truth and love for this music.

Bil Bell Quarteto - Sua Majestade o Sax

Hello, good evening! I'm making public my Christmas and New Year's Eve gift to my very good friend Caetano Rodrigues. Loronix would not be the same without Caetano's music and advice given on continuous basis to us. Caetano is also a very special human being and this album is something impossible to find, featuring one of the artists that he like most, although we do not have much information on his real identity. The first thing I will make after press the submit button and release this post is to reach Caetano Rodrigues, I'm sure he will be excited and walking on circles for several minutes. Let's see.

This is Bil Bell Quarteto - Sua Majestade o Sax (no date), for Damic, featuring jazzy renditions of international standards lead by a quartet with not credited musicians. bossanovadreamer has a hint about Bil Bell, he said on our last Bil Bell release that Hector Costita is his best guess. Is there anybody here who knows the real artist behind Bil Bell? This answer would make Caetano Rodrigues extremely pleased. Tracks include:

01 - I'm Getting Sentimental Over You
02 - Autumn Leaves
03 - Rose
04 - The Man I Love
05 - Temptation
06 - Body and Soul
07 - Indian Summer
08 - Summertime in Venice
09 - Laura
10 - Poinciana
11 - I'm in the Mood for Love
12 - A Woman in Love

Maria Lucia Godoy - Maria Lucia Godoy Interpreta Villa Lobos (1977)

I'm sure that Maria Lucia Godoy has several admirers at Loronix, and I feel really glad about it, from a rather unknown to a very requested artist by many friends. It is not easy to find her albums and I was even satisfied with the two previous we made at Loronix. This third one, with Maria Lucia Godoy performing Villa Lobos at his 90th anniversary is a real find, she is truly gorgeous in this session and is backed by Sergio Abreu, a Brazilian guitarist, brother of Eduardo Abreu from the legendary and acclaimed Duo Abreu. Let's see.

This is Maria Lucia Godoy - Maria Lucia Godoy Interpreta Villa Lobos (1977), for Philips, featuring an orchestra of cellos on tracks 01 to 05 conducted by Alceo Bocchino and the guitar and arrangements of Sergio Abreu on tracks 06 to 11. I'm making available a music video with Duo Abreu performing a Domenico Scarlatti Sonata, K.141 in 1974. Duo Abreu was internationally acclaimed, but had a short career. Sergio Abreu is now an international highly praised luthier since he left his career as musician in the beginning of the 80's. Varios Artistas - Baiao Nr. 3 (1953)

Hello, good evening! Let's start this Saturday visiting another album from a very nice and old Musidisc sequel dedicated to a genre that dominated Brazilian popular music in the 40's and 50's, the Baiao. We made available a couple of months ago Baiao Nr. 2, and now it is time to show Baiao Nr. 3, much better than the second one. Let's see.

This is Baiao Nr. 3 (1953), for Musidisc, featuring the Brazilian pianist Leal Brito, later known as Britinho, and several special guests, such as the vocal group Tres Marias, Nilo Sergio, Manezinho Araujo and Catulo de Paula. The repertoire features sixteen Baiao tunes, with instrumental tracks by Leal Brito and lyrics when a special guest makes an appearance. I like Baiao and Leal Brito instrumental tracks really worth checking out. Tracks include:
