Hello, good evening! We had a sunny and hot day in Rio de Janeiro with a very strong thunderstorm in the end of the evening. I believe in Murphy's Law, so I had to turn down the master switch of Loronix Data Center facilities (which is in fact a very old notebook) until thunders cease. Several thunders reach the sea, leaving a smell of ozone at the atmosphere.

That is the reason we are having another late start today. Additionally, Loronix hosting service at dreamhost.com has been out of service since yesterday. Life has not been easy down here. FLAC files will be postponed for tomorrow.

This is Aloysio e Seu Conjunto - Na Ciranda do Samba (1962), for Copacabana, featuring the Brazilian vocal group Os Modernistas with the crooner Cacau. Aloysio delivers groovy Hammond B3 organ playing on top of Samba renditions of Brazilian tunes. Everything works really nice with this album and Aloysio and his accompaniment band will amaze you, highly recommended and really in the spirit of a Samba Saturday at Loronix. Tracks include:

Here we go on a music video that really precious, featuring Paulinho da Viola, Elton Medeiros, Jair do Cavaquinho, Anescar do Salgueiro and Nelson Sargento, which is essentially, Conjunto A Voz do Morro. They perform on Brazilian TV and the year is 1980. Paulinho da Viola is really a genius and this video an awesome Samba celebration.

Severino Filho e Sua Orquestra de Dancas - Rio de Janeiro, Gosto de Voce (1958) featuring Os Cariocas

Hello, good evening! We are opening this Friday night with a truly amazing album. You should believe me. Before any other thing, two warnings are necessary, as follows: 1) In spite of the word "Dancas" at the album title, this is NOT a regular "Para Dancar" album, actually, by definition, this is not "Para Dancar" music. 2) Do not take it as an album recorded by Maestro Severino Araujo from Orquestra Tabajara, it is a very common mistake.

In the other hand, if you are not aware, Maestro Severino Filho is the leader of the Brazilian vocal group Os Cariocas, one of the greatest Brazilian musicians ever, still active with Os Cariocas since the foundation in 1942. I never heard about this album before and it is a great surprise since we have the participation of Os Cariocas. Let's see.

This is Severino Filho e Sua Orquestra de Dancas - Rio de Janeiro, Gosto de Voce (1958), for Polydor, featuring an orchestra conduced and arranged by Maestro Severino Filho with the participation of Os Cariocas in a couple of tracks. This album was released 49 years ago and the recording quality is really amazing. Severino Filho e Sua Orquestra de Dancas features a not credited vibraphone player that delivers a wonderful job on top of overwhelming orchestra arrangements by Maestro Severino Filho. Geraldo Vandre - Hora de Lutar (1965)

Geraldo Vandre is really a gifted artist, it seems impossible for him to make a regular album, always delivering challenging listens, being also very popular among Loronixers. In spite being a lyrics oriented artist, his popularity is quite the same among friends in Brazil and also overseas. Hora de Lutar has the participation of Baden Powell, playing violao in two songs. Let's see.

This is Geraldo Vandre - Hora de Lutar (1965), for Continental, which is the second LP recorded by Geraldo Vandre, presented with the vinyl transfer of 1969 Disco Lar reissue. I don't know if Disco Lar took the original Continental cover artwork for this reissue, however, it is a very beautiful cover. Geraldo Vandre wrote most of the tunes with 06 - Asa Branca (Luiz Gonzaga / Humberto Teixeira) and 12 - Sonho de um Carnaval (Chico Buarque) as the exceptions. Almir Ribeiro - Uma Noite no Cave (1957)

Hello, good evening! Very late start today at Loronix, perhaps it is the slow pace of another big weekend that is coming. Anyway, we are starting late, but starting great with another of those impossible to believe findings sponsored by zecalouro's mother. Mom is really a great finder, actually, she understand the business and has a nice understanding of what really matters and what should be left behind. This is an album that I did not know, featuring a great artist that left us very early. Let's see.

This is Almir Ribeiro - Uma Noite no Cave (1957), for Copacabana, in the 10-inch format. Almir Ribeiro was primarily a TV and Radio artist, making his option for the singer career very late on his short life. Almir would probably be one of the greatest Brazilian artists from the decades to come, but unfortunately his life was taken very early and tragically at the age of 22 in Uruguay, drowned at the beach.

Uma Noite no Cave is Almir Ribeiro debut LP, recorded with accompaniment of Conjunto do Cave, which is Cave nightclub support band in Sao Paulo, lead by Aloysio Figueiredo, also in charge of arrangements and musical direction. The back cover features liner notes written by Vinicius de Moraes saying that Almir Ribeiro would probably be one of the greatest Brazilian singers in the forthcoming years. Tracks include:

Forma & Elenco is a radio show broadcasted every Saturday on Brazilian radio and Internet streaming. I know there are many radios and many shows in Brazil. However, Forma & Elenco is really special, it is all about Bossa Nova and it is produced and presented by Leo Ribeiro Jr., a great Loronixer. Loronix and Forma & Elenco are connected; Leo uses to make the show agenda based on the music available at Loronix. Additionally, Leo does not miss the chance to make beautiful statements about Loronix, mentioning zecalouro and several other Loronix friends.

Dilermando Reis - Subindo ao Ceu (1966)

Hello, good evening! This cover artwork is very beautiful, but every time I take a look, it makes me remember Nelson Cavaquinho, I will tell why. Nelson had a great fear of death, which is something clear at his compositions with several lyrics having death as a theme. Nelson Cavaquinho would never release an album like this, the clouds and the title, Subindo ao Ceu, free translated as Going up to the Sky, in English. Let's take this image and this title with another meaning, going up to the sky with the beautiful violao playing and compositions by Dilermando Reis, which is problably what Continental had in mind when creating this title and cover art. Let's see.

This is Dilermando Reis - Subindo ao Ceu (1966), for Continental, featuring only Dilermando Reis violao performing his own compositions. This is the second Dilermando Reis album made available to Loronxiers, much better than the first one with songs from several countries. Dilermando Reis delivers better results performing his own compositions. Shame on zecalouro, Caetano sent this album a couple of months ago to our community and for reasons that I will never realize, I took it as commercial available and decided to keep it with me until availability changes. I was wrong, do not ask me, perhaps I took by default that all records from Joao Gilberto and Stan Getz collaboration would be always available. By the way, it is truly amazing that this fantastic album is no longer available in CD.

Anyway, thanks for this one Caetano and thanks once again for sending the CD version, featuring really important extras.

This is Stan Getz - Joao Gilberto - Getz/Gilberto #2 (1964), for Verve, featuring the sequel of the acclaimed Getz/Gilberto released an year before. This is a concert recorded live at Carnegie Hall in October of 1964 with Stan Getz and Joao Gilberto performing on separated sets. The extras include a couple of additional vocal cuts featuring Astrud Gilberto. Actually, this is one of those zecalouro's mother great findings and her great favorite, the legendary Angela Maria. Let's see.

This is Angela Maria - Angela em Tempo Jovem (1969), for Copacabana, showing a very different Angela Maria riding a bike and trying to attract a new and younger audience. Actually, I read an interview by Angela Maria saying that Angela em Tempo Jovem was really an attempt to get another public, but the album is Angela Maria "as usual" with only one exception, track 01 - Somos Apaixonados, a soft ballad composed by Martinha, an icon of the Jovem Guarda movement. In spite of being unusual, Angela em Tempo Jovem features Angela Maria singing as one of the great Brazilian divas ever. Tracks include:

Hello, good evening! This is truly amazing. My apologies if you have already seen this video, truly a phenomenum, if you live in Brazil, a friend or coworker probably notified you about it. I received today more than a few messages about it.

This movie is part of a series of documentary videos produced by Metro Goldwin Mayer in 1936, named Traveltalk, "The Voice of The Globe" and this excerpt is dedicated to the city of Rio de Janeiro, which is really fascinating, more than seven minutes of Rio de Janeiro images recorded in 1936, with color. I think you should not miss this one, even if you do not have any kind of connection with Rio.

Joao Donato - The New Sound of Brazil | Piano of Joao Donato (1965)

I was browsing the posts made at the very beginning of Loronix wondering about one of those mandatory upgrades. I found this one and I understood immediately that I was in front of those ones who deserve better media and also visibility at the first page. However, opening the comment section, I found a writing of one of the most respectful and renowned fans of the music from Brazil, B.J. Major, the owner and maintainer of The Music Discographies at www.bjbear71.com, serving up the best selected discographies on selected musicians since 1999, which make me feel really moved. I will take the opportunity to bring B.J. Major comment to this post. I could not make better.

"I have to say something about this album, even though this is an older post and probably no one will see it. I have been acquainted with this album for several years. To learn about it was like getting hold of a treasure chest, with each track a shining colored jewel. This record is a masterpiece, totally exquisite. Donato's playing is superb throughout. But what makes these jewels shine are the arrangements by Claus Ogerman. This is an album that deserves far more attention than it receives. It demands listening. Careful listening. The jewel that shines the brightest for me on the album is Donato's "Jungle Flower". Listen to what Claus does with the strings on opening, making them go higher and higher until you think they cannot go any higher. Then they do. This one track is worth the entire price of admission to the album.

I have nothing but superlatives to say about this album. There is not one flaw in it, not one tiny little mistake. It is absolute perfection and to me, is one of the greatest bossa nova albums ever recorded. An assemblance of unique craftsmanship and talent, from the composer right down to the arranger/conductor, who makes it all sing." - B.J. Major

Simonetti e Orquestra RGE - E Disco... Que Eu Gosto Nr. 2 (1959)

I was thinking about releasing this album when the Formula One race driver Kimi Raikkonen got the season championship for Ferrari two weeks ago, but I forgot by that time. There were two reasons, Maestro Simonetti is Italian and Ferrari is an Italian racing team and Simonetti wears red while Ferrari has a red color. Perhaps I'm going nuts with these crazy associations. Anyway, several friends were asking for another Simonetti album and I'm glad to show this one, the second out of a series of two "E Disco que Eu Gosto" LPs for RGE. Let's see.

This is Simonetti e Orquestra RGE - E Disco... Que Eu Gosto Nr. 2 (1959), for RGE, once again, an above the average orchestra album delivered by RGE and a nice cover showing Simonetti creative process, really funny. Everybody says that cover artwork from the past is much better than today and I totally agree, especially when they make it with a picture of the main performer. E Disco... Que Eu Gosto Nr. 2 brings a repertoire blending Brazilian and international songs with very creative arrangements by Simonetti. Tracks include:

Altamiro Carrilho e Sua Bandinha - A Bordo do Vera Cruz (1960)

Hello, good evening! It has been a very long time since we released an album by the Brazilian flutist virtuoso Altamiro Carrilho, an artist with a career that spans decades, since the late 30's until today. Altamiro Carrilho is strongly associated with the Choro genre, but he recorded several other styles, including the one made available though this album, known as Musica de Banda, very similar to the recent albums released at Loronix recorded by military bands. Let's see.

This is Altamiro Carrilho e Sua Bandinha - A Bordo do Vera Cruz (1960), for Copacabana, featuring a repertoire of Portuguese tunes performed as Musica de Banda. Vera Cruz is a Portuguese cruiser ship that made his first trip in 1952 and kept regular trips to Brazil during eight years. The front cover shows Altamiro Carrilho e Sua Bandinha inside Vera Cruz, which is also available at the picture on your left. I hope our very good friends from Portugal, which is country number 12 in terms of number of visits at Loronix. Tracks include:

Edu Lobo - Jogos de Danca | Composto para o Ballet Guaira (1982)

I have been in contact with the music from Edu Lobo from the 60's, when he established her career as a singer, delivering very successful songs that belong to the history of Brazilian popular music, such as, Arrastao, Ponteio, Upa Neguinho and many others. The 70's was Edu Lobo turning point, he left his reputation of singer and composer to make a deep dive on the improvement of his capabilities as musician, delivering conceptual and even instrumental albums, such like this one, kindly sent by AdHoc, once again showing a high quality output on music, cover scans and complimentary information. This is Edu Lobo - Jogos de Danca | Composto para o Ballet Guaira (1982), for Som Livre, featuring six Edu Lobo compositions for Ballet Guaira and the play Jogos de Danca. Edu Lobo is in charge of arrangements and conduction of all tracks, performed by a constellation of Brazilian musicians. Jogos de Danca is the kind of album that brings new surprises every time you take it for a spin, no matter how many times you make it. Os Grandes Sucessos do Paramount (1965)

Hello, good evening! Teatro Paramount in Sao Paulo is part of Bossa Nova history. In the early 60's, Walter Silva - also known as Pica-Pau, produced a series of concerts featuring renowned Brazilian artists that were very successful. Most of these performances were recorded and later released by RGE on 30 Anos de Bossa Nova series, featuring ten albums with five of these concerts produced by Walter Silva. Os Grandes Sucessos do Paramount is not a live recording of a given day, but a compilation organized by Walter Silva featuring the best moments of those days. Let's see.

This is Os Grandes Sucessos do Paramount (1965), for RGE, with recordings from Teatro Paramount Bossa Nova concerts from 1964 and 1965. Two of these five albums with Teatro Paramount sessions are already available at Loronix, O Fino da Bossa (1964) and A Bossa no Paramount (1965), being this one my favorite. Alayde Costa and Titulares do Ritmo opens the record with an “a capella” performance of Onde Esta Voce (Oscar Castro Neves / Luvercy Fiorini) that worth the entire album. The remaining performers are listed bellow, with highlights to Walter Santos, Oscar Castro Neves Noneto, Zimbo Trio, Bossa Jazz Trio... Better stop to do not revel complete performers listing. Taiguara - Taiguara, Piano e Viola (1972)

I will be open and honest, I'm not versed on Taiguara discography and career. Caetano Rodrigues could say something; he introduced Taiguara to Loronixers, delivering his first and very hard to find LPs for Odeon. Besides these first albums, I never took any later Taiguara release for a spin, being this one the exception. Taiguara was an artist that could make nice things on several different styles, from Bossa Nova to political songs. I think this one shows a different Taiguara, more acoustic, not on social concerns, I hope someone brings more clarification on this Taiguara career stage. Let's see.

This is Taiguara - Taiguara, Piano e Viola (1972), for Odeon, featuring Taiguara with a combo of piano (played by Taiguara), bass, drums, violao and guitar with arrangements by Eduardo Souto Neto, Lindolfo Gaya and Taiguara, orchestra arrangements in charge and conduced by Eduardo Souto Neto and Lindolfo Gaya. Taiguara released several hits in the early 70's, but I could not identify some of them at this album, with the exception of the title track, Piano e Viola. Tracks include:

Next time I get together with TNO, I will not forget to ask how he makes such nice 78rpm transfers to Loronixers. This one is really special, no background noise, nothing jeopardizing this beautiful 78rpm recorded by Os Cariocas in 1952 for RCA Victor. Such as TNO, Os Cariocas always surprise me. Nice little record that I strong recommend.
