Joao Donato - Joao Donato e Seu Conjunto - Chá Dançante (1956)

This is a very old Joao Donato from the 50's, specifically, 1956. One of the first Donato's album, this album mixes swinging jazz with Brazilian Rhythms, such like: Baião, Choro, etc.

The early Donato is not playing the piano here; he is in charge of the accordion, his main instrument of his beginning. Relaxing, this nice LP gives all the hints that Donato would be a great Brazilian musician.

  1. You've outdone yourself with this one. Earlier today, I was listening to some George Shearing broadcasts from Birdland in 1952 and the first side of Joao Donato's album fit wonderfully with it--as well as reminding me of Benny Goodman and even Buddy DeFranco. The second side seems to switch from American jazz to European bistro. As for indiviudal selctions: "Carinhoso" is especially pretty. And I couldn't help but think of Fellini movies as I lsitened to "Baiao." "Se Acoso Voce Chegass" swings like mad. All in all, a superb album and another link to your past--and mine. Keep blowing my mind.

  2. Amigo, you are amazing. What I really want is know about you and how happens this great idea to do this blog. I´m a brasilian DJ and have a party dedicated to 60s/70s brasilian music, in Rio de Janeiro (as far as I know, the only one in Brasil) since 2000.. Thank you very much to share this gems, and i hope soon i can retribute it in the same way!

  3. Zecalouro, I really love the cover. It reminds me some American cartoons I used to watch at when I was a child, at the beginning of the 60's. If you remember the introduction of the sitcom "Bewitched" you know what I mean. With this cover, the music has to be wonderful, and the comments of David Federman are very clear with this.

    Thank you!

  4. Lucio K,

Nice to hear from you that you are alone as DJ giving Brazilian music from the 60-70s.

That's really cool and something that I never heard about.

    You can help us, sure.

    1) Come back often and place comments to generate feedback and discussion.

    2) Give to zecalouro hints to new posts, etc. He appreciates that.

    3) Donate, if you want, can or afford that.

    4) Give to zecalouro and zecaloura a free ticket to your party and let us stay for a while watching your work, something I never had a chance.

    Bye.
