Elza Laranjeira - A Noite do Meu Bem (1960) - Debut LP

Elza Laranjeira is back to Loronix, now with her debut LP A Noite do Meu Bem (1960). This is one of those orchestrated LP from the early 60's with the late 50's flavour. Elza is accompanied by Maestro Simonetti e sua Orquestra.

A Noite do Meu Bem is one of the most successful Elza's LPs, the song A Noite do Meu Bem is such like Elza's trademark and her version of Tom and Vinicius Eu Sei que Eu Vou te Amar is one of the best interpretation of this song ever.

Obrigado, Zeca.

  3. I made the mistake of playing this album right after listening to Elizete Cardoso's "Noturno." She's a hard, if not impossible, act to follow. So a day or so later I took a second listen. I'm glad I gave this album a second chance.

It is a perfect pop record--well-performed and unfailingly tasteful.

At first, I was surprised at how different it sounded from the Jobim album made two years later. But I realized this album served two laudable purposes as a debut: 1) it took a long, loving backward look at the Brazilian music and milieu which shaped Elza and 2)it established her incredible versatility and range of repertoire. I think Elza wanted to show her peers she had mastered every song genre. This album is convincing proof of her mastery.

As for her style, which I love, Elza sings with a kind of legato that reminds me of Rosemary Clooney. To hear what I mean, listen to "Quando te Achei." This woman doesn't belt out songs, or over-vocalize, or drown in vibrato. There is always a composure--sometimes even a restraint--to her singing that is admirable and classy.

Last, I have to tell you I am a sucker for lovely ballads like "Eu Seu gue vous to amar" and "Estou Amando Azul." All in all, this is as good a debut album as any I can remember--and it deserves to be cherished as a classic.

  4. Refer,

  5. David,

Nice comment, thanks. Elza has passed in 1986 with only 61 years old. I’m quite sure that she would be very happy reading your comment, which takes her to a “classic” status.

Stay tuned for more Elza Laranjeira.
