This is the first out of several LPs that Caetano Rodrigues kindly sent to zecalouro today to release at Loronix. I spent myself today like a little kid locked at a chocolate factory, completely lost among several choices. Tomorrow, I will post on Loronix Forum a picture with the overall collection together. Since we are going through a series of posts, there is a new post icon to identify Caetano's contributions. I never get tired to thanks Caetano about his willing and sharing spirit.
Starting the first out of many, Caetano's pick for today is Bossa Tres - Os Bossa Tres e Seus Amigos (1965), for Audio Fidelity, the last recording of Bossa Tres with it's original line-up, which is Luiz Carlos Vinhas (piano), Edison Machado (drums) and Tiao Neto (bass). Bossa Tres has special guests to this session (amigos), they are Sonny Simmons (sax alto), Clifford Jordan (sax tenor and flauta) and Prince Lasha (flute).
I have never heard this LP and my first feeling is that we will have a lot to talk about it. Tracks include:
01 - Bottles (Luis Carlos Vinhas / Édison Machado / Tião Neto)
02 - Blue Monk (Thelonious Monk)
03 - Love For Sale (Cole Porter)
04 - Cuttie (Sonny Rollins)
05 - Moanin' (Timmons)
06 - Well You Needn't (Thelonious Monk)
07 - Dahoud (Luis Carlos Vinhas / Édison Machado / Tião Neto)
08 - Epistle To Train (P. Lasha / S. Simmons)
09 - Days Of Wine And Roses (Henry Mancini / J. Mercer)
10 - Whisper Not (Golson)
11 - Yesterdays (J. Kern / O. Harbach)
12 - Minortory (G. Gryce)
Some of these tracks were issued on CD on the Spanish label, Ubatuqui, a few years ago. The liner notes talk about the group coming to play at the Village Vanguard in New York City and also appearing on the EdSullivan show. That's a video I'd like to see show up on YouTube.

ReplyDeleteI noticed that there are a number of errors in the track listings at loronix (misspelled song titles, incorrect composer credits). Here is a revised listing:

03 - Love For Sale (Cole Porter)
04 - Cute (Neal Hefti)
05 - Moanin' (Bobby Timmons)
06 - Well You Needn't (Thelonious Monk)
07 - Daahoud (Clifford Brown)
08 - Epistle To Trane (Prince Lasha / Sonny Simmons)
09 - Days Of Wine And Roses (Henry Mancini / Johnny Mercer)
10 - Whisper Not (Benny Golson)
11 - Yesterdays (Jerome Kern / Otto Harbach)
12 - Minority (Gigi Gryce)
Joe, let me know when you find that video. ;o)
This LP was issued on A.F. in the U.S. with the title "Jazz Tempo, Latin Accents!" . Just a little trivia there.
ReplyDeleteYes, this album is great. I bought a bootleg LP in very bad sounding in London. So now I am happy to see it here because of the missing titles which were not on the Ubatuqui CD.
ReplyDeleteThanks a lot to Zeca and surley to the great Caetano.

Hi, thanks for this sensational release. I have heard it many many times and it-s absolutely enjoyable.
ReplyDeleteI advert at this Sony Simmons web http://www.sonnysimmons.org/lasha.htm
that it says that the pianisto is played by Luiz Parga. I supose it-s a mistake ¨
Hello,
ReplyDeleteI think this was really credit mistake on this website. Pianist is the legendary Luiz Carlos Vinhas.
Cheers, zeca
I hate to expose myself as as wide-eyed innocent, but I just heard this album in a coffee shop that also sells records...the guy just bought this LP for 50$...and it took me less than two minutes to find it online for free (not that it compares with vinyl), but still that's pretty amazing. I love the drums on this...almost Elvin Jonesy, but a little looser and washed out. Thanks very much!
