Pedrinho Mattar Trio - Bossa Nova Bossa Nova (1964)

I'm coming from dinner, where I had the chance to hear this LP for the first time. In spite of the outstanding recording quality made by Claudio Fragnan, this LP is since now an essential on my instrumental Bossa Nova short list. It is a great close to Pedrinho Mattar tribute at Loronix, several friends were asking and hunting this record for a long time and now I understand why everybody has been tracking it down.

This is Pedrinho Mattar Trio - Bossa Nova - Bossa Nova (1964), for Farroupilha. Instead of a quartet, Pedrinho Mattar combo was reduced to a trio on this formation, highlighting Pedrinho Mattar piano on foreground. It is not everyday that you hear such tight piano, bass and drums album. Pedrinho Mattar Trio features Pedrinho Mattar (piano), Mathias da Silva Mattos (bass) and Toninho Pinheiro (drums, with further participations at Jongo Trio and Som Tres). Tracks include:

01 - Samba Pro Pedrinho (Walter Santos)
02 - O Amor Que Acabou (Chico Feitosa / Luis Fernando Freire)
03 - Azul Contente (Walter Santos / Tereza Souza)
04 - Consolação (Baden Powell / Vinicius de Moraes)
05 - Balanço Zona Sul (Tito Madi)
06 - Rimas de Ninguém (Vera Brasil)
07 - Nôa Nôa (Sergio Mendes)
08 - Beijo Swing (Geraldo Cunha / Milton de Paula)
09 - Sol (Mário Albanese)
10 - Cafuné (Denis Brean / Gilberto Martins)
11 - Eu Preciso de Você (Tom Jobim / Aloysio de Oliveira)
12 - A Mesma Rosa Amarela (Capiba / Carlos Penna Filho)

  1. Hi zeca,

Great music, but I'm wondering if there's some mistake. I'm hearing a quartet (with guitar) on several tracks.

  2. JimR,

Same perception down here. I took this trio formation from Fragnan and additional internet searches.

I will ask him about this.

As a matter of fact, what a great record...

    Cheers, zeca

  4. hi Zeca... yesterday I read on the newspaper that Pedrinho passed away... Is a big sad notice!!! Anyway, he had heart attack in his house, in Santos, São Paulo. The tribute came in a good moment. He deseerved!

  6. Last night, as I usually do just before bedtime here on the east coast of the USA, I checked into Loronix for my usual daily bossa nova "fix".

This time I was surpised by "Pedrinho", who I had never heard of. Its amazing that these recoordings were made so long ago and still have all the vitality of something that you would expect to hear today. RIP Pedrinho.
