This is Sergio Mendes & Brasil '77 - Raizes (1972), for A&M. This album was recorded in Brazil and does not have in fact any commercial expectations. It is a unique dive inside Brazilian ritualistic rhythms from Bahia full of percussion instruments lead by Rubens Bassini, vocals by Gracinha Leporace and Geri Stevens with Oscar Castro Neves guitar played loud from the start to end of this beautiful and unusual album. Perhaps is the first time an album is released at Loronix with a giant track of 19 minutes and I never could realize that Sergio Mendes would be responsible by this accomplishment. Tracks include:

I don't know if it is the right place to post requests...but here we go. A long time ago I had a double LP of greatest hits of Jorge Ben. At the end of disc 1 there was this beautiful acoustic version of Fio Maravilha that I did not find anywhere else. Since, I don't have these vinyls yet, so it would be good to post them here.
ReplyDeleteMASTERPIECE!! HOT!
ReplyDeleteAnd thank you for really getting behind your posts with some real love in the information department.
ReplyDeleteHow strange that this is from '72 & the band is titled Sergio Mendes & Brasil '77 ??
ReplyDelete"Raizes" (or "Primal Roots" as it is known in the USA) was Claudio Slon's favorite Sergio Mendes album he played on. He told me this many times and also expressed this same sentiment in interviews by others. The U.S. release of this album has the same front cover (with the different title, of course) but a totally different back cover.
ReplyDeleteThis is indeed a great album, and I like it much more than "Horizonte Aberto".
ReplyDeleteThanx and Greetz from Germany,
Jörn
Não conhecia esse album, e quando vi Caymmis e Edus baixei na hora. Gostei muito desse post Zeca.
ReplyDeleteI really enjoy this album! Thank you! I'm all for 19 minute songs.
ReplyDeleteThis album was Sergio's chance to do something really left-of-center, since his contract with A&M was up. I think it was recorded in LA, despite the heavy "roots/Amazon" authenticity of the sound. Incredible album. Also worth seeking out: A recording, from these same sessions, of Joao Donato's "Caranguejo" ("The Crab") issued as the B-side of, I believe, "After Sunrise."
