Olivia Byington & Joao Carlos Assis Brasil - Olivia Byington & Joao Carlos Assis Brasil (1990)

What an album! Really great music. We had a great feedback from Loronixers on the last Olivia Byington record, Anjo Vadio. Now it is time to get along with another nice album by this great Brazilian singer, pretty different from the last one and really solid. Olivia Byington performs with the Brazilian pianist Joao Carlos Assis Brasil, twin brother of the legendary saxophonist Victor Assis Brasil, a gifted pianist with a classical background, but also a great popular music performer. This should be a real treat. Let's see.

This is Olivia Byington & Joao Carlos Assis Brasil - Olivia Byington & Joao Carlos Assis Brasil (1990), for Columbia, Olivia voice with Joao Carlos piano. I have no doubt that Olivia Byington is one of the greatest singer active in Brazil, being also a great collaborator, such as she did with Egberto Gismonti on her early recordings and now with Joao Carlos Assis Brasil.

I had a thought time making this ripping. Actually, I did it twice, the back cover does not bring the correct repertoire and I took a time to understand that the correct listing was available at both labels for side A and B at the vinyl media. I hope everything is fine this time. Tracks include:

01 - Medley "Cole Porter" Just One Of Those Things (Cole Porter) I Get a Kick Out Of You (Cole Porter) Let's do It (Let's Fall In Love) (Cole Porter)
02 - Medley "Gershwin" Summertime (George Gershwin / Dubose Heyward) Bess You Is My Woman (George Gershwin / Ira Gershwin) Embraceable You (George Gershwin / Ira Gershwin) I've Got Rhythm (George Gershwin / Ira Gershwin)
03 - Medley "Tom Jobim" Canta Mais (Tom Jobim / Vinicius de Moraes) Anos Dourados (Tom Jobim / Chico Buarque) Por Toda a Minha Vida (Tom Jobim / Vinicius de Moraes)
04 - Medley "Cartola" O Mundo É Um Moinho (Cartola) Acontece (Cartola)
05 - La Vie En Rose (Edith Piaf / Louiguy)
06 - Medley "Kurt Weill" Don't Be Afraid (K. Weil / B. Drecht) September Song (K. Weil / M. Anderson)
07 - Uva de Caminhão (Assis Valente)
08 - Luar do Sertão (Catulo da Paixão Cearense) Tico-tico no Fubá (Zequinha de Abreu)
09 - Caravela (Egberto Gismonti / Geraldo Carneiro)
10 - Beau Soir (C. Debussy / P. Bourget)
11 - Medley "Victor Assis Brasil" One For Madam (Victor Assis Brasil) Elba (Victor Assis Brasil)

1 comment:

  1. Zeca, the last track is definitely the Villa-Lobos medley, just as the cover says. I suspect the Victor Assis Brasil Medley may be a bonus track on the CD version, but nobody seems to know -- maybe Carlão does?
Anyway, what a voice! Thanks for this. What's next, her Cuban album, Identidad, or her very '80s-pop, Música?
