Quarteto em Cy - Quarteto em Cy (1966)

I was planning to close this Monday with Dick Farney, since I had to make an urgent work to be accomplished by the morning. However, the schedule has changed and I'm very happy to present this album as an extraordinary post. Well, I will be open and honest my willing to make this additional one is just to show people this gorgeous picture bellow (with a high quality version available on music files) and also tell something that I didn't know.

This picture was taken in front of Bottles Bar, showing Quarteto em Cy, Carlos Coqueijo and Carlos Castilho, brother of Bebeto Castilho of Tamba Trio. Carlos Castilho performed a special role with the early Quarteto em Cy, Carlos was the founder of "As Bahianinhas", the girls before changing the group name to Quarteto em Cy. Carlos Castilho was the arranger and also guitarist, performing together with As Bahianinhas on first Quarteto em Cy performances in Rio de Janeiro.

I'm starting to be addicted to Luiz Harding videos that are really out of this world. I don't know how Luiz has accumulated all these wonderful documents. He is making a wonderful job on bring back to life the Brazilian musical memory with these videos.

Today Luiz show us something that he admits to be also taken by surprise when he found the tape, Eumir Deodato, performing with Pascoal Meireles, Victor Biglione, Alex Malheiros, Banda Savana and Orquestra de repertorio de SP. The song is Also Sprach Zarathustra. Piece of history. As Luiz said, the tape was on a really band condition, but the film worth each second played.

Jose Briamonte - Ritmos e Vozes | Agora e Samba (1973)

That's exactly what I was thinking for this Saturday, Samba, perfect for dancing and perfect for Loronixers, even those who don't have what we call in Brazil "Samba no Pe". I don't have Samba no Pe, but I know everybody likes it. I will tell you what it is.

This is Jose Briamonte - Ritmos e Vozes | Agora e Samba (1973), for Odeon. That's a really inquisitive record. Maestro Briamonte is in charge of everything, arrangements, and conduction also taking the role of musical director. I have an assumption that female singing and percussion instruments are played by the obscure group Ritmos e Vozes, however, it is just a hint. The repertoire is based on Samba tunes from Vinicius de Moraes, Ana Maria, Eduardo Gudin, Luiz Americo, Noel Rosa and others. Another Jose Briamonte LP that I never heard before. If you are in the mood of an orchestra LP, just like the legendary Briamonte Orchestra, think twice. This is all about Samba songs with girls singing. Tracks include:

Marcia - In Bossa

Hello, Good Night! Nelson Motta, a Brazilian producer, composer that was part of Bossa Nova, wrote some years ago that Brazil is essentially a country of female singers, using Loronix language, a country of Divas, Brazilian Divas. We have some nice examples here. I will not forget Tuca, she was rather unknown and after being presented here, she certainly got several extra enthusiasts. On a same or larger scale, the same applies to Thelma. Anyway, I'm not sure if we will have the same phenomenon this time, but at least several Loronixers will be taken by surprise with this post, such like Caetano Rodrigues did with me.

This is Marcia - In Bossa (no date), for Malagueta. I don't know how Caetano makes his findings; I searched the Internet several times today and could not find consistent information about this singer. The little I know: this is Marcia debut LP and she knows how to make it, singing with passion and performing great renditions to Bossa Nova standards. Marcia has the accompaniment of Paulinho Lemos (acoustic guitar), Diego Ebeller (piano), Wilma Keuchgueriam (flute), Leo Toniche (drums), Jose Lima (bass) and Marcia Barros (voice). Tracks include:

Azymuth - Crazy Rhythm (1987)

I'm gradually getting rid of the flu I got yesterday, quite good, only unconfortable with some back and neck pain. That's why I decided to have a sleep two hours ago while listening to this record. It was a bad idea. This album is very solid and I could not close my eyes while listening. It has been also a very long time since we released the mighty Azymuth at Loronix. Caetano also said his "Muuuuuuito BOM!", which is a guarantee to any winner album. It seems that every road leads to Azymuth, so I take this train and show this fantastic album to Loronixers.

This is Azymuth - Crazy Rhythm (1987), for Milestone, I'm confident to say that we have one of the best Azymuth albums here. They are really fantastic; the record has an exciting rhythmical atmosphere with Alex Malheiros delivering swinging bass phrases throughout the record. Azymuth has the help of renowned special guests, such as Joe Pass and Paulinho Oliveira. I hope this album makes your day tomorrow. Tracks include:

Hi again. I think this is the right choice for a Friday night, for those who arrive late at home, coming from some cultural agenda, show, nightclub or even drinking with co-workers. This is music to settle down, far away of those weird classifications we see around, such as: elevator music, easy listening, etc. We are talking about acoustic and electric piano of Osmar Milito, backed by renowned musicians.

This is Osmar Milito - Ligia (1978), for Continental. Osmar Milito is the brother of Helcio Milito from the Tamba Trio. Osmar Milito backed up several artists, such as Elis Regina, Sylvia Telles, Hermeto Pascoal and others. We have already some early Milito LPs at Loronix, but nothing so jazzy and instrumental oriented such like this one provided by Caetano. Tracks include:

Primo e Seu Conjunto - Selecao Dancante (1957) Primo debut 10-inch

Just to announce that rain is falling in Rio de Janeiro and the dry times are over. zeca is sleeping and one of the thinks that he likes most is to take a rain bath, he looks like a punk after the rain. Maybe tomorrow I will make it.

Anyway, it is perfect when we have a contributor that is also a journalist. Contributions come with information, well written, making work easy. It is just a matter of zecalourize (makes the text on zecalouro's style) the text and provides the information needed to Loronixers. However, I have also a great pleasure to find information by myself and really like such challenges, but in a rush time such like this week, contributions like this one from the great Marcello Campos are really handy.

This is Primo e Seu Conjunto - Selecao Dancante (1957), for Mocambo. This is the legendary Primo, well known to us by his later recordings Sambossa (1965), Pinta o Sete (1966) and the ones as Primo Quintet. Selecao Dancante is Primo debut LP, a very rare release, gently provided by Marcello Campos. Primo also lead the legendary Conjunto Flamingo, available at Loronix by Caetano Rodrigues. Conjunto Melodico Norberto Baldauf - Parole (1968)

You probably remember our last Challenge, a picture of a female singer with a group. People who tried to answer the challenge were successful on guessing the singer, Elis Regina. However, with a single exception nobody could even say the name of the group.

This posts comes to introduce you to a new Loronixer, Marcello Campos, Journalist, author of the book Week End no Rio - Cinco Decadas (e meia) de Conjunto Melodico Norberto Baldauf and a friend that comes to play an important role at Loronix, improving our knowledge of the music from the South Region of Brazil, the nest of several renowned artists.

Everybody can easily name the artists that came from that region, but nobody can say how things happened and what is the background the artists from that region had before they got famous. Marcello is the right guy to share these things that we do not know. He has a book, written in Portuguese, portraying one of those artists, Conjunto Melodico de Norberto Baldauf, which has a broaden approach of those years, with additional details on Elis Regina, Primo, among many others. Caetano Rodrigues performs the role of main contributor on Marcello's book, as several other music books in Brazil.

This is Conjunto Melodico Norberto Baldauf - Parole (1968), for Philips, the second LP of this band, active for more than 50 years. Parole is a delicious and dancing album from a group that I never had the chance to hear before, full of organ and vibes influenced by Beatles, Italian music, etc. Marcello says that Parole has the first recording of With a Little Help from my Friends, a Beatles song from the legendary album Sergeant Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band. I think you can get further details with Marcello and his book. Just want to warn Loronixers to stay tuned, Marcello's collaborations are coming and it is a unique chance to improve our knowledge of the music from Brazilian South. Tracks includes:

What a nice night! I'm writing this post just after the last video was released, so I do not have feedback so far about it, but I'm confident that people will have a lot to talk about it. As I said at tonight opening post, Caetano is in charge of the selections and this is to present Loronixers another Caetano's pick from this new series. Caetano's best quality is to identify gold were regular guys such like zecalouro can't see and this one is a real treat.

This is Paquito D'Rivera, Claudio Roditi, Ralph Moore and Jay Ashby - Return to Ipanema (1989), for Town Crier, featuring the great reunion of musicians you see on top. It was hard to define the name of this post. I would not like to identify Paquito D'Rivera as the main performer and also file this record as Various Artists. The best decision is take the name of four of them, such like Town Crier made at cover artwork. Caetano's posts are self-explanatory and this is the kind of record that nobody should miss. Hello, Good Night! I got flu. I have fever, small eyes and pain on all by body, except nails and hair. After making this one, I will take Caetano's words of wisdow of flu treatment, which are a shower (I'm happy that he doesn't say "a COLD shower", otherwise I would have to call the police to put me inside the bathroom) and some medicine that I should buy downstairs.

Caetano gave also advice on today's posts. As a matter of fact, we have a day of celebration; another package has arrived, very different from the previous one and truly gorgeous. This is Sammy Davis Jr. & Laurindo Almeida - Sammy Davis Jr. Sings and Laurindo Almeida Plays (1966), featuring only the voice of Sammy Davis Jr. and the acoustic guitar of Laurindo Almeida. It's a nice surprise to hear Sammy Davis Jr. performing as a superb singer without those Las Vegas casinos tricks. Laurindo de Almeida is also a solid contributor to this very successful record. Special Post | Pictures of the Ancient Rio de Janeiro

Friends, I woke up this morning with videos around my head. Make yourself ready for wonderful videos today. Let's start with something that I like to collect, old pictures of Rio de Janeiro. There are some very old pictures at the video bellow with the sax tenor of Moacyr Silva at the background. Among the pictures, I selected this one that is opening this post, Copacabana beach at the beginning of the last century (probably 20's or 30's) with the legendary Copacabana Palace Hotel surrounded by nothing, none of the several buildings and shops we have today. Wonderful.

Os Cariocas - A Bossa dos Cariocas (1963)

Hello, Good Night! Another hot night, hot as the last 30 days in Rio de Janeiro. Today is the thirty-day with no rain. Life changes without the rain. Rio de Janeiro is one of a few selected cities in the world that has a forest inside the urban area, the famous Floresta da Tijuca. With no rain, fire starts easy and every time on Floresta da Tijuca, burning nature and killing birds and other species as well. The weather forecasts rain to this weekend. We should be also prepared to cope with this rain. Let's start today with a Mr. W. contribution, showing one the most loved Bossa Nova vocal group that has not be released for a while.

Sadao Watanabe - Sadao Meets Brazilian Friends (1968)

Hello, Good Night! First I would like to inform that Loronix Forum is back. A planned 30 minutes migration was scheduled yesterday, however, things went wrong and Forum was down for the last 20 hours. I'm sorry for this situation. I have received several emails that I could not reply, since I was fully dedicated to bring that server back. It is now up and running.

I think I have to take a nap before meeting friends at Loronix, meanwhile, let's check this album, made available by Caetano Rodrigues, reposting a previous Loronix release with CD quality. Thanks Caetano.

This is Sadao Watanabe - Sadao Meets Brazilian Friends (1968), for Denon, recorded with the members of the anthological Brazilian Octopus. I will repeat the original post story.

Rodhia, the textile company, as a marketing initiative, assembled Brazilian Octopus. Anyway, the story is so incredible that I decided to pick up an article written by Carlos Calado at allbrazilianmusic.com. Let's stay with the whole story, as follows:

This is the story of the group, assembled to perform at fashion shows, that gathered legendary musicians like Hermeto Pascoal and Lanny Gordin, made only one obscure album and wrote a chapter in the history of instrumental music in Brazil.

Picture a band that features musicians from schools so different as the multi-instrumentalist Hermeto Pascoal, the post-tropicalist guitar hero Lanny Gordin, bossa nova pianist Cido Bianchi (former Milton Banana Trio), acoustic guitarist Olmir Alemão Stocker and jazz bassist Nilson da Matta. The surprising meeting happened in 1968 and helped writing a little known chapter in the history of instrumental music in Brazil called Brazilian Octopus, whose only release is hunted by disc collectors. "This is undoubtedly the strangest Brazilian group ever", writes Marcelo Dolabela in his dictionary ABZ do Rock Brasileiro printed on Estrela do Sul, 1987).

"At that time, we didn't care about the money, we just wanted to play. It was a wonderful experience", recalls Celso Bianchi, also a maestro and arranger. Brazilian Octopus was lined up in São Paulo in the beginning of 1968 by Lívio Rangan, manager of a textile factory that promoted musical fashion shows to promote their products. "Lívio used to like me a lot. He even claimed he was gonna turn me into the new Sergio Mendes", tells the musician, appointed by Rangan as the group's coordinator.

In fact, Brazilian Octopus was born with uncommon space in the market: a contract for a year of work that included three months of rehearsals during which the musicians received salaries. At that time, the band recorded an album with Japanese saxophonist Sadao Watanabe that has never been released in Brazil.

Friends, that's the story and this is the album we will share today. Brazilian Octopus left a solo LP that is commercially available, a wonderful chance to have it on CD. I suggest you run to the stores before it goes out of print again. Personnel and tracks are just below.

Dick Farney - Dick Farney (1973)

I cannot remember how many albums by Dick Farney showing his "singing side" are already available at Loronix. Perhaps without noticing, I've been picking Dick Farney instrumental side more frequently. This nice LP comes to fulfill this gap, showing Dick Farney singing on a very reduced accompaniment by his own piano and a small combo. Let's see how it works.

This is Dick Farney - Dick Farney (1973) for Odeon. Little is know about this album recording session that shows Farney singing as a performing on a nightclub. I'm a big fan of Dick Farney and perhaps not the right guy to describe this album, beautiful and with a adequate touch of sadness on his singing and piano playing. What you see at this nice cover is exactly what you get, a great opportunity for those who wants to get along with his art of singing. Tracks include:

This is the international and always inquisitive Bossa Nova post of the day provided by Caetano Rodrigues, The Great. Caetano show us Paul Smith, jazz pianist, widely known as Ella Fritzgerald's conductor and pianist, an active studio musician with a brilliant technique. Paul Smith also worked with renowned Jazz figures, such as: Dizzy Gillespie, Anita O'Day, Buddy DeFranco, Louie Bellson, Steve Allen, Louie Bellson, Stan Kenton, Mel Torme and many others. Let's check Caetano's pick of the day, Paul Smith's rendition to Bossa Nova.

This is Paul Smith Piano and Orchestra - Brazilian Detour (1966), for Warner. Paul Smith is a virtuoso piano player; he goes from the "liquid sounds" slow playing to a faster approach, hitting keys strongly. Paul Smith also leads the orchestra. Anyway, Caetano releases are self explanatory, nice discoveries that gets by surprise renowned Jazz enthusiasts at Loronix. Tracks include:

Beto Strada - Bacalhau (BACS) Trilha Sonora do Filme (1976)

Hello, Good Night! Let's talk about the 70's, the decade that I do not have much knowledge on Brazilian music. In the other hand, the friends that like the music from the 70's, they make it with passion, such as: Mr. Bapt. and Mr. G. They are my consultants the official sounds of the 70's Loronix advice guys. I'm showing this album with no advice by them, just because it is a very requested post that we are now having the chance to make available only with the help of claudiab from Cantos e Encantos.

This is Beto Strada - Bacalhau (BACS) Trilha Sonora do Filme (1976), for Crazy. BACS is an adaptation of the movie film O Tubarao (Jaws), a comedy. All tunes are Beto Strada compositions, which was also responsible to gather the musicians on the set, listed just before tracks. Anyway, I think the 70's advisors strongly recommend this album, saying those unmeaning words to me, such like: "grooves", "soulful", etc. Tracks include:

Geraldo Vespar e Orquestra - Brasil Romantico (1975)

Finally, a Mr. X. contribution. Mr. X, is the first Mr. at Loronix. The Mr. aliases were created to identify contributors that asked for being not identified. Actually, friends are asking to receive their Mr. titles, which is something that makes me very proud.

However, Mr. X is unique. It is the only that nobody really knows his real identity. Very exciting situation since he said that he lives very close to me, walking distance. Mr. X, makes massive contributions and has another nice thing, he does not complain when zecalouro makes such bad things as release a Mr. X contribution with no mention, do not release Mr. X contributions for months. I'm now filling the gaps with Mr. X., with this wonderful album. Thanks Mr. X.

This is Geraldo Vespar - Brasil Romantico (1975), for Odeon. Little is known about this LP, but what is known is quite enough to make it great. It is arranged and played by Geraldo Vespar with his violao loud and clear in all tracks. Geraldo Vespar is a revolutionary musician that will always have a special place on my collection and I'm sure on several others friends. Tracks include:

Geraldo Miranda - Dancando com Geraldo Miranda e Seus Novos Sons (1962)

It is not necessary to say that this is another release kindly sent by Caetano Rodrigues to Loronixers. This album should make the day of many friends, an artist that is widely unknown to everybody, never released before at Loronix and a wonderful musician that plays an instrument that everybody likes, the Violao. I'm curious to see feedback from Loronixers.

This is Geraldo Miranda - Dancando com Geraldo Miranda e Seus Novos Sons (1962), for Odeon, featuring the Brazilian guitarist Geraldo Miranda, which is also responsible for the arrangements of the accompaniment band. No much is known about this record and you should trust us that it worth a listening. Geraldo Miranda violao sounds unique and the album is very pleasant to hear. I cannot resist hearing a new artist, especially when his instrument is the Brazilian guitar. Tracks include:

Vic Damone - Stay with Me (1966)

Let's move to the international Bossa Nova post of the day, always a great surprise by Caetano Rodrigues. Here we go on a singer that I have some child memories of hearing it at my parents’ place, Vic Damone, an Italian-America smooth baritone that was compared to Frank Sinatra in his early years. I also remember Vic Damone as a film actor and perhaps he is more identified in Brazil as an actor, in spite of being essentially a singer.

This is Vic Damone - Stay with Me (1966), for RCA Victor, Vic Damone tribute to Bossa Nova, featuring five Antonio Carlos Jobim tunes, How Insensitive, Quiet Nights of Quiet Stars, Meditation, The Girl From Ipanema and Once I Loved. Mario Albanese is also listed with Pretty Butterfly. Mon was looking the covers sent by Caetano today and she stopped on this one asking if this Captain James T. Kirk record was good or not. Mon is always right. In fact, Vic Damone looks very much like Willian Shattner, the legendary Captain James T. Kirk from Star Trek Series and Movie Film. Tracks include:

Djalma Ferreira com Orgao e Orquestra - Baile de Formatura

Hello, Good Night! I was surprised today when Trix asked for more information about Maestro Jose Briamonte and I found a very early release by him available at Submarino, which is an on-line store in Brazil. The record is Jose Briamonte - New Age Brasil (2004), not listed at Amazon. Great surprise. I thought Briamonte was retired, working outside Brazil or even making closed performances on events, but I never could realize he was recording.

Another awesome surprise is this "never heard about" album from Djalma Ferreira, probably unknown by many, so good that I could not resist to start the day showing it to Loronixers.

This is Djalma Ferreira, Com Orgao e Orquestra - Baile de Formatura (no date), for Discos Drink, featuring the organ of Djalma Ferreira, his orchestra and the always above the average arrangements of Maestro Nelsinho. Baile de Formatura is how we call the graduate balls, which is the album theme. Reading the back cover, I could also learn that Djalma Ferreira is the owner of Discos Drink and probably Drink nightclub. Tracks include:
