Let's start great today, showing a unique album sent by Caetano Rodrigues and a longtime request from several Loronixers. Maestro Severino Araujo and Orquestra Tabajara made their rendition to the choro genre delivering a blend of choro with big band, on a really delightful set. Let's check.

This is Severino Araujo e Sua Orquestra Tabajara - 12 Chorinhos de Severino Araujo (1960), for Continental. I was making some research on choro and now I understand something very important, the term "Chorinho" is not well received by Choro fans, thay say chorinho is something different, the choro genre with lyrics. This album does not have lyrics; it is pure instrumental music with Maestro Severino Araujo and his orchestra at their peak. Caetano asks Loronixers to pay special attention to the tracks that he likes most, Mirando-te and Um Chorinho pra Voce. Truly beautiful indeed. Primo Trio - Primo Trio (1965)

Hello, Good Evening! This is the start of the special posts specially selected to our 1st Loronix year celebration, actually, this is just the warm-up day, the pearls are flying from Sao Paulo to Rio on a small and very special package prepared by Caetano Rodrigues in just one day. I always like to remember everybody how Caetano Rodrigues is so important to Loronix and to the Music from Brazil. There will be a special post dedicated to Caetano Rodrigues, which is a confidential surprise, next Saturday. He is the man of the century and deserves all our appreciation and respect.

Let's start this warm-up day with instrumental music, my favorite music and probably the music that better translates Loronix. The instrumental music is unique since it does not depend on preferences on singing styles and lyrics languages; it is universal and easily introduced and appreciated worldwide. I think I could not make it better than selecting Samba Jazz, which is the favorite style of Loronixers, according with our survey.

This is Primo Trio - Primo Trio (1965), for Musidisc, the first record of the legendary pianist of Brazil South Region Primo released at 12" format. This is pretty self-explanatory and never released before at Loronix, awesome Samba Jazz music with the classical piano, bass and drums formation. Claudette Soares - Claudette Soares (1965)

It is cold in Rio de Janeiro, believe-me. The temperature felt down to 20 Celsius, which is something equivalent to the North Pole for Cariocas. Caetano said that Sao Paulo had the same decrease, going down to 10 Celsius at night. Perhaps this is the reason zeca is in the mood of female singers today, cold temperatures makes you slow down. I spoke with Caetano about this second Claudette Soares LP for Mocambo and he said it is better than the first one, Claudette e Dona da Bossa. I like very much the first one, so I think this should make the day, the cold day of everybody.

This is Claudette Soares - Claudette Soares (1965), for Mocambo. This cover alone worth the admission price and there is a curious fact about this album, the back cover, taken for many people by mistake as the front cover, both are amazing. Anyway, tomorrow we will start some special posts on Loronix 1st year celebration that will last until Saturday. Ted Moreno - Sambas que a Vida Escreveu (1960)

Mr. E. sent this album to Loronixers featuring a new artist that I never heard before. It is amazing how Mr. E. makes his contributions, always with special attention on beautiful cover scans and with a lot of additional information that is very useful to us. I learned several things with this Mr. E. contribution and I will share everything I know about Ted Moreno with Loronixers.

This is Ted Moreno - Sambas que a Vida Escreveu (1960), for Continental. Ted Moreno started his career in the mid 50's as a romantic singer, recording on several labels a repertoire based on Sambas and Bossa Nova. He was also active on radio, taking also part movies. Ted Moreno was also a composer, being recorded by renowned artists, such as: Maysa, Orlando Silva, Angela Maria, Helen de Lima, among others. In the early 60's, he made a major change on his career, getting formal musical education with Maestro Radames Gnattali, abandoning his singing career to be a Maestro on TV Globo orchestra among other activities. Nowadays, Ted Moreno lives in Brasilia and it is an active musician leading a Jazz Band with 12 musicians. I'm quite sure this album should thrill many Loronixers. Thanks Mr. E. Tracks include:

Neyde Fraga - Mais Balanco com Neyde Fraga (1965)

This is the second album at Loronix by this Brazilian female singer that I like very much. The first one was recorded with Walter Wanderley, her husband at that time. Neyde Fraga has one of the most swinging voices I have ever heard on a female singer and this album is so good as the other one with Walter Wanderley. Let's see how Loronixers feedback this one.

This is Neyde Fraga - Mais Balanco com Neyde Fraga (1965), for Continental, an contagious samba album with a swingy big band orchestra and arrangements shared by Erlon Chaves and Francisco de Moraes. Actually each one is in charge of six arrangements as indicated at track list. Neyde Fraga recorded several 78 rpm, some singles, EPs, three LPs and for reasons that I don't know she stop her career after releasing this album. The third Neyde Fraga LP is a 10-inch format, released in 1957 for Odeon. I'm tracking down this one and any hint is really appreciated. Tracks include:

This is a request from the mighty Jean-Yves, also known as Jean do Trombone made today at CBox. Actually, it is a shame that this essential album was not made available before. Polemica stands for controversy in English and they were very famous, with only a musical scope, not affecting or changing friendship between the artists that are exchanging flames on a polemica. This is the most famous Brazilian music polemica and it is between the legendary Noel Rosa and Wilson Batista.

This is Roberto Paiva & Francisco Egydio - Polemica Wilson Batista x Noel Rosa (1956), for Odeon, a tribute recorded by Roberto Paiva and Francisco Egydio to the polemica between Wilson Batista and Noel Rosa featuring all songs that were part of the polemica between both artists. I will try later to gather some additional info about this polemica that last more than three years and produced these fantastic songs. Roberto Paiva plays Wilson Batista role while Noel Rosa has performances by Francisco Egydio. Tracks include:

Vi Velasco - Cantando Bossa Nova (1962)

It has been more than two months since I received this contribution from one of the earliest and most active Loronixers, Refer, which I want to say thanks for waiting so long to see his music at Loronix. This is the first LP of a singer that probably had everything in place to make a career, but I could not search successfully for others releases besides this amazing one with the accompaniment of Zoot Sims and his orchestra. Thanks Refer, I think this should be a treat for many Loronixers.

This is Vi Velasco - Cantando Bossa Nova (1962), for Vee-Jay, recorded in two days, October 1 and 2. Refer did all the hard work making available a description, as follows: Vi Velasco was born in San Diego, California, of Philippine parentage. While attending City College in Los Angeles, she entered and won a talent contest on a local TV show. It was then she decided to begin a professional career as a singer and actress. After stints in "Flower Drum Song" and "Kicks And Co" she won a top role in "No Strings" on Broadway and went from there to a headline engagement at the Las Vegas Flamingo and to a exclusive Vee-Jay contract. ‘Cantando Bossa Nova’ was her first album." Mario Castro Neves & Messias - The Wonderful Latin American Sound of Brazil (1967)

This is Mario Castro Neves & Messias - The Wonderful Latin American Sound of Brazil (1967), for RCA Victor. What you read is what you get, this is an album by the brother of the Legendary Oscar Castro Neves, Mario Castro Neves and the Brazilian guitar player Messias, a musician that people cannot stop talking about since Caetano sent us his tribute album to Antonio Carlos Jobim. This is not instrumental music, but a collection of Bossa Nova tunes backed up by a nice piano, bass, drums and guitar group and lyrics sung by girls. Tracks include:

Cesar Mariano & Cia - Sao Paulo - Brasil (1977)

When I was in Sao Paulo I heard for more than a few friends that I speak too much in Rio de Janeiro. It is natural, I live in Rio and I do it without knowing. I was not planning to make this post today and it is not only a given album with Sao Paulo at cover to make people happy, this is a great album and although made available before at the Acesso Raro and Orgy in Rhythm, I think it is widely unknown to Loronixers.

This is Cesar Mariano & Cia - Sao Paulo, Brasil (1977), for RCA Victor, a musical portrait of Sao Paulo City and the second Cesar Camargo Mariano solo LP, released eleven years after the first, Octeto de Cesar Camargo Mariano (1966). Sometimes I fell disappointed when a new contributor uses the Mail Big File button to leave something without saying hello, or asking for calling him with a nick or any other kind of contact. That's what happened with this album of a legendary vocal and instrumental group that recorded more than 100 78 RPMs and had renowned Brazilian artists, such like Miltinho, Jorginho do Pandeiro and others.

This is Quatro Ases e Um Coringa - E Com Esse Que Eu Vou (1961), for Odeon. The legendary Miltinho is plays pandeiro and also sings on this album and the other members are not credited. Astor Silva is in charge of arrangements while Maestro Lindolfo Gaya is credited as Productor. Tracks include:

Leo Peracchi e Sua Orquestra - Brazilian Cocktails (1958)

Hello, Good Evening! Today it was just the opposite from the others. I had a lot of time thinking about this first post of the day. I use to go panic with the last one and I hope you appreciate this first one, a nice orchestra album recorded by a renowned Brazilian maestro for Capitol in the US. There are some other amazing facts about Antonio Carlos Jobim at this album, let's see.

This is Leo Peracchi e Sua Orquestra - Brazilian Cocktails (1958), for Capitol. Thanks Caetano Rodrigues for making available the cover artwork this time. I'm now skilled on my new entry-level A4 scanner and cover scan quality has been gradually improved a lot. Brazilian Cocktails was released as part of a given Capitol International series and I'm not sure if it was issued in Brazil. This album has three Antonio Carlos Jobim compositions that you will not find on any other Jobim career album, Moonlight Daiquiri, Latin Manhattan and Coffee Delight, this last one with Dolores Duran.

There is another Brazilian album from this series that I would like very much to have to chance to hear featuring Carolina Cardoso de Menezes and Orlando Silveira - Honeymoon in Rio. The cover artwork is beautiful as this one and you can click on this thumbnail to see it bigger. Tracks include:

This album belongs to the legendary Living Jazz series of RCA and has many hidden treasures. Let's see.

This is Phil Bodner - Manha de Carnaval and Other Bossa Nova Favorites (1967), for RCA Candem. Phil Bodner is a clarinetist and an active studio musician that recorded this Bossa Nova album for Living Jazz series taking the role of arranger and conductor. Living Jazz series is a collector’s pursuit and is recognized by the excellence of its recording process and musicians that are assembled to each set. Manha de Carnaval also features Bobby Rosengarden (drums), Buddy Morrow (trombone), Bucky Pizarelli (guitar), among others. Tracks include:

Hello, Good Evening! I spent all day out of home and I'm really delayed with my mailbox. By the way, I just checked my mailbox and so far I could not find a reply from Survey participant number 47 claiming his great prize. Anyway, let's start the music with a solo LP from the mighty leader of Bossa Tres that is probably widely unknown to Loronixers.

This is Luiz Carlos Vinhas - O Piano Magico de Luiz Carlos Vinhas (1985), for Som Livre. We did not make an exploitation of later works of Luiz Carlos Vinhas as we made with Luiz Eca, so it is time to fill this gap. Bass and drums accompany Luiz Carlos Vinhas on a traditional trio formation. The record starts with Samba Jazz, but from the second track to the end the atmosphere changes to piano bar music, with Vinhas performing Bossa Nova and American standards. Messias - Messias e a Musica de Chico Buarque de Hollanda (1967)

This is a non-planned post, not supposed to be released today, but I could not keep waiting longer. I cannot remember by heart a similar acclamation received by the first Messias LP, Messias - O Melhor de Antonio Carlos Jobim Interpretado por Messias (1968), a fantastic contribution of Caetano Rodrigues. The effort made to bring more information about Messias by Loronixers was also great, now we know much more and there is more to come, if you check Bossa On-Line you will see several obscure Messias albums that are not that easy to find and were probably released in Japan.

By the cover artwork, Messias had probably teamed with Chico Buarque for the recording session.
