Baden Powell - O Grande Show | Gravado Ao Vivo (1979)

Sometimes I have to write at Loronix with a great level of uncertain and the only way to keep it running is to make assumptions, sometimes work, sometimes doesn't. Take this album as an example; I never heard about it before taking at that last anonymous contribution, never was released on CD, no auction sites availability and my searches were not of help. Anyway, perhaps a pretty unknown Baden Powell LP to thrill people, or perhaps this album is available on every Baden Powell fan shelf around the world. I hope I can amaze Loronixers with this really interesting double LP.

This is Baden Powell - O Grande Show | Gravado Ao Vivo (1979), for WEA. I really prefer to identify this album as "O Grande Encontro", but the folks of Brazil-on-Guitar and Jornal Musical takes it as O Grande Encontro. This is the first double LP released at Loronix and also the first Double LP on Baden Powell discography, it is a live show recorded in Sao Paulo, Brazil at Teatro Procopio Ferreira, most of the tracks have lyrics sung by Baden Powell with that sweet and beautiful voice of his late years. Baden makes a nice rendition of Samba da Bencao, dedicating "Saravas" to everybody he could remember. The last and longer track brings a breathtaking version of Berimbau. You should not miss it, very near mint vinyl ripping. Tracks include:

Sexteto Prestige - Musica e Festa (1958)

Hello, Good Evening! It has been a tradition the release of Samba as the first post of every Saturday; unfortunately, with this big holiday weekend we are having in Brazil, I thought today was Friday. However, there is no reason for being disappointed with zecalouro, he brings something very great, the debut LP of a record label - Prestige - and also the debut LP of a new group to Loronixers - Sexteto Prestige. Let's see what it is.

This is Sexteto Prestige - Musica e Festa (1958), for Prestige. According with liner notes - available with the music - Sexteto Prestige was assembled by the own record company for releasing their first album and renowned musicians were selected. Unfortunately, Prestige did not credit the musicians and my searches did not result on a single musician name. Maybe I'm wrong, but I have two assumptions, Waldir Calmon at piano/organ and Moacyr Silva at sax tenor. There is also an accordion played very much like... Anyway, I will give you the chance to realize who is behind Sexteto Prestige, which is a nice surprise, pretty old pre-Bossa Nova group with great arrangements on 4 tracks with a medley of 4 songs on each. That's it, nice replacement for the Saturday Samba LP. Tracks include:

01 - Le Gondolier (De Angelis / Marcucci) Cuando Tu Me Quieras (R. S. Moreno / Mário Barrios) Sonhando Contigo (Anísio Silva / Fausto Guimarães) Mi Oracion (J. Kennedy / G. Boulanger)
02 - Eu Quero Um Samba (Haroldo Barbosa / J. de Almeida) Faceira (Ary Barroso) Sonho e Fantasia (João Leal Brito ''Britinho'') Sal e Pimenta (Newton Ramalho / Nazareno de Brito)
03 - A Saudade Mata a Gente (Antônio Almeida / J. de Barro) Cabecinha no Ombro (Paulo Borges) A Grande Verdade (Luis encourt / Marlene) Mocinho Bonito (Billy Blanco)
04 - Interesseira (Mário Latine / Bidú Reis) Apaixonada (Lourival Faissal) Por Causa de Você (Tom Jobim / Dolores Duran) Perfidia (A. Dominguez)

Johnny Alf - Desbunde Total (1978)

This is to address the request made by GoodGroove a couple of weeks ago, Johnny Alf, a key figure on Bossa Nova story, active since the early 50's -- as we confirm here at Loronix with the fantastic contribution of Mr. E., Mary Goncalves - Convite ao Romance (1952) -- and unfortunately highly underestimated.

This is Johnny Alf - Desbunde Total (1978), for Chantecler, late work of Johnny Alf with the help of Joao Donato at arrangements. All compositions written by Johnny Alf, most of them unknown, Johnny Alf sings and plays the piano. Desbunde Total is the last Johnny Alf LP in the 70's, he cross the whole 80's with no recording activity, being back in the 90's with Olhos Negros, gone out of print and never reissued again with Johnny Alf making duets with several guests based on a repertoire of his greatest hits. I'm tracking this one down. Tracks include:

01 - Oxum (Johnny Alf)
02 - Passe Livre (Armando Cavalcanti / Victor Freire)
03 - Sidarta (Johnny Alf)
04 - Orgulho de Bom Sambista (Johnny Alf)
05 - Que Volte a Tristeza (Johnny Alf)
06 - Eu Pretendo Não Chorar (Johnny Alf)
07 - Desbunde Total (Johnny Alf)
08 - Com Voz de Plenitude (Johnny Alf / Édison Penha)
09 - Anunciação (Johnny Alf)
10 - Para Não Falar de Amor (Paulo Miranda / Buião)
11 - Paz de Um Grande Amor (Johnny Alf)
12 - Olhaí (Johnny Alf)

Lamartine Babo e Varios Artistas - As Mais Famosas Versoes (1960)

Hello, Good Evening! I was missing Copacabana label albums at Loronix, perhaps I got some addiction to them, last week we had a least one album by the powerful Copacabana, one of the greatest Brazilian labels from the 50's to 60's that unfortunately did not kept the good pace in the 70's. In spite of the constellation of renowned artists on the cast, Copacabana also released very creative compilations, celebration albums and tributes, exactly what we have here, an album blending various artists singing Brazilian versions of an international repertoire.

This is Lamartine Babo e Varios Artistas - As Mais Famosas Versoes (1960), for Copacabana, delivering another awesome cover artwork with this album directed by Lamartine Babo. I took a time to decide selecting Lamartine Babo as the main performer, but he performs a song, Tres Palavrinhas (Three Little Words) and is in charge of everything. Three Maestros were selected to make orchestra arrangements, Maestro Pachequinho, Guarana and Renato de Oliveira. The performances were not taken from others albums; all tracks were recorded for this LP. Performers are summarized bellow, just before tracks. Tracks includes:

Sergio Mendes & Brasil '77 - Love Music (1973)

I had no option except showing Loronixers the album included on our last challenge. Sergio Mendes is really popular among Loronixers, several answers were posted as soon as the challenge was made available. Thanks everybody and thanks Beto Kessel, The Ambassador, the first to wrote the right answer. This album also ends my Sergio Mendes "graduation", and to summarize my findings I just want to say he is a really professional musician, in control of every aspect of his career with no fear of making changes when needed. Let's now see why people got so thrilled by the challenge.

This is Sergio Mendes & Brasil '77 - Love Music (1973), for Bell. This is perhaps the first Sergio Mendes album with no Brazilian songs I see. I don't know if it is the only exception, but it seems to me that we have an effort to make Love Music a blockbuster, all songs are very popular, you will probably have the feeling that you heard everything before. This is certainly a transitional album to the further "pop" phase.

Love music is infectious from the start to end, the girl's vocals works very well and the percussion on top of the pop arrangements are also very nice. Personnel listing was already built on last challenge, but I will list it again, Brazil '77 features top-notch musicians. One last thing, don't let the cover - on a really bad shape, almost dissolving in my hands - cheat you, the vinyl was near mint and the sound is good. Tracks include:

Personnel

Sergio Mendes
(piano, electric piano)
Bonnie Bowden and Gracinha Leporace
(vocals)
Oscar Castro Neves
(violao, guitar)
Sebastiao Neto
(bass)
Claudio Slon
(drums)
Laudir Oliveira
(congas, triangle, percussion)
Paulinho da Costa
(bongos, congas, percussion)

Track List

01 - Where Is This Love (MacDonald / Salter)
02 - Put a Little Love Away (Lambert / Potter)
03 - Don't Le Me Be Lonely Tonight (James Taylor)
04 - Killing Me Softly With His Song (Fox / Norman Gimbel)
05 - Love Music (Lambert / Potter)
06 - You Can't Dress Up a Broken Heart (Lambert / Potter)
07 - Hey Look At The Sun (Ângelo)
08 - Walk The Way You Talk (Burt Bacharach / David)

III Festival da MPB - Rede Record, SP, Volume 1 (1967)

Hello, Good Evening! I received a hint from our very good Loronix friend David Simonetta, his idea was to show Loronixers music from the legendary MBP festivals from the 60's and videos with the performances, when available. I'm sure this idea will generate a really good series of daily posts. Let's take Davids suggestion starting with the first out of the three volume series taken from a 1967 Festival, let’s check.

This is III Festival da MPB Rede Record, SP, Volume 1 (1967), for Philips. There is a lot to talk about the "A Era dos Festivais" (Festivals Era) of Brazilian popular music, but it is better start with this first album and get feedback from Loronixers. Do not miss Caetano Veloso music video taken from III Festival da MPB, Rede Record. Tracks include:

Milton Banana Trio - O Som do Milton Banana Trio (1967)

JimR is a great Loronixer that acts like an Ambassador, inviting new friends everyplace he goes. He is also pretty organized. JimR left a post at Loronix Forum with his most wanted list. The list has been a guide to zecalouro and there is a nice game between us, on each album from his list made available at Loronix, JimR goes there and erase it. I'm now pleased to inform that JimR should make his final erase, the anonymous contributor made it.

This is Milton Banana Trio - O Som do Milton Banana Trio (1967), for Odeon. This is the creator of Bossa Nova drumming style at this peak, Milton Banana, Joao Gilberto favorite drummer. Personnel listing is not available this time and I could not search successfully. I will hear some clicks and clacks at the end of track 06 and a FLAC file with no noise reduction is on the way. Trio Maraya - Trio Maraya (1966)

Sorry, a last minute technical problem jeopardized the second release provided by that massive contribution made today. But do not worry, Loronix engineers are already working on the third, a truly awesome album requested by several friends at Loronix. Meanwhile, I think we cannot go wrong with this album that makes me feel very proud, a sought after piece by several collectors gave to me as a friendly gift by Caetano Rodrigues.

This is Trio Maraya - Trio Maraya (1966), for Som Maior. I always heard about Trio Maraya as a Samba Jazz trio, such like, Bossa Tres and others, actually they are a blend of Bossa Nova combo with regional music from Brazil Northeast. Trio Maraya also delivers consistent vocal arrangements. Caetano said this album was hunted by everybody a couple of years ago and continues listed with very high prices in auction sites. Ely Arcoverde can be considered member number "four" of Trio Maraya, playing piano, organ and in charge of all instrumental arrangements. Hermeto Pascoal also takes the role of flute player on tracks 02, 04 and 08. Let's feedback Trio Maraya, so we can understand better why this album is on the wish list of every collector. This is a repost with better quality, archiving and cover scans. Tracks include:

Os Velhinhos Transviados - Barbaros... (1964)

Hello, Good Evening! I'm really proud of our community and Loronixers today. I received by mail a donation of almost fifth LPs for Loronix. Some of them are already available and will be used for updates as needed during this second year. In the other hand, others are really missing pieces on our collection and today we will have three picks taken from this amazing donation to our community. Let's start with the first, one of the favorite of Loronixers.

This is Os Velhinhos Transviados - Barbaros... (1964), for RCA Victor. Above the average album delivered by Jose Meneses, which is Os Velhinhos Transviados founder and leader. The cover artwork is perhaps the best one I have seen from this group that always makes nice covers based on comic situations. The contribution came from someone that asked to not be identified, not associated with any nickname and not mentioned on her albums posts, except today, the first day. Anyway, the important is that we have nice music ahead, stay tuned. Tracks include:

01 - Mas Que Nada (Jorge Ben "Jorge Benjor")
02 - Hully Gully Baby (K. Mann / D. Appell)
03 - Louco (Ela É o Seu Mundo) (Wilson Batista / Henrique de Almeida)
04 - Abbronzattissima (Rossi / Vianello)
05 - Rio (Roberto Menescal / Ronaldo Bôscoli)
06 - Ti Guardero Nel Cuore (M. Ciorciolini / N. Oliviero / R. Ortolani) Maria Elena (L. Barcelata) Sukiyaki (R. Ei / H. Nakamura)
07 - Sa-sa-ruê (Marino Pinto / Pernambuco)
08 - The Hully Gully (Smith / Goldsmith)
09 - Zé de Conceição (João Roberto Kelly)
10 - Vola Colomba (Concina / C. A. Bixio / Cherubini)

Announcement | Sabadabada.com is now updated!

This is just to announce an upgrade of sabadabada.com, the legendary and pioneer website that promotes Brazilian music for many years. The upgrade has something special to Loronix, sabadabada folks seems to be really crazy friends, they created a mascot to sabadabada.com, which I proudly introduces to Loronixers, meet "zeca chapado". I don't have any idea what sabadabada friends have in mind to come up with this name, but it is a great honor that sabadabada adopted a parrot as mascot with the same name of zeca.

The music, well the music is great and you will see above what I'm saying. This upgrade is solid from the start to the end, just look at the pictures and feel excited to reach sabadabada.com.

MPB-4 / Quarteto em Cy - Cobra de Vidro (1978)

Today posts were not planned and it was one of the days that I like most. Non-planned days produces nice outcomes, for instance, no instrumental music today, also, a nice harmonization of three albums to Loronixers, we started with a female singer, Neusa Maria, made a male singer in the middle, Joao Bosco and the close blends boys and girls, MPB-4 and Quarteto em Cy performing together. Isn't that great? Well, I think it is.

This is MPB-4 / Quarteto em Cy - Cobra de Vidro (1976), for Philips. I don't know if our Quarteto em Cy consultant Mr. G. has Cobra de Vidro among his favorites, if not, I think Mr. G. should consider as one of the best from now on. Cobra de Vidro has several different situation, such as: the best Because (Lennon / McCartney) rendition I have ever heard, two wonderful "instrumental" songs using voices as instruments, Noites Cariocas (Jacob do Bandolim) and Fuga (Heitor Villa Lobos) and a Guarania with Spanish lyrics Me Gustan Los Estudiantes (Violetta Parra). I don't have idea of the popularity and availability of this album in Brazil and worldwide, perhaps this should be a wonderful surprise to Loronixers. Tracks include:

01 - Nada Será Como Antes (Milton Nascimento / Ronaldo Bastos)
02 - A Estrada e o Violeiro (Sidney Miller)
03 - Guararapes (Dori Caymmi / Paulo César Pinheiro)
04 - Noites Cariocas (Jacob do Bandolim)
05 - 5/6/65 (Luis Cláudio Ramos) Instrumental
06 - Não Existe Pecado ao Sul do Equador (Chico Buarque / Ruy Guerra)
07 - O Cio da Terra (Milton Nascimento / Chico Buarque)
08 - Me Gustan Los Estudiantes (Violeta Parra)
09 - Oriente (Gilberto Gil)
10 - Because (John Lennon / Paul McCartney)
11 - Amor Amor (Sueli Costa / Cacaso)
12 - Fuga (Vocal) (Villa-Lobos)

Joao Bosco - Galos de Briga (1976)

Caetano Rodrigues was absolutely right last week when he recommended to take a look at this classic early material by the Brazilian singer and songwriter Joao Bosco, brand new artist at Loronix, in response to the last Neusa Maria release. Thanks for it Caetano, actually, I would say this album is performed by two artists, Joao Bosco and his longtime lyrics partner, the legendary Aldir Blanc. Let's check what we have inside this truly amazing cover.

This is Joao Bosco - Galos de Briga (1976), for RCA Victor, very nice produced album by Joao Bosco with mysterious boleros and ballads and very good Samba tunes. Aldir Blanc lyrics are all about the way of life in Rio de Janeiro with surrealistic scenes of futebol (soccer), wife and husband matters, favelas, etc. There is also a lot of the legendary Luiz Eca contribution to Galos de Briga, he is in charge of arrangements, conduction and also piano playing. Neusa Maria - Mensagem (1959)

Hello, Good Evening! Nelson Motta said one day that Brazil is essentially a country of Divas. I agree with Nelson Motta, if you browse our collection you will see there are more girls than boys available. This is not a matter of preference; it is just how things are. I thought we had reached a plateau in terms of New Brazilian singers release, but Mr. E. came this week with a new one that I never heard before and probably many Loronixers did not. Believe me, she is really great. Thanks once again Mr. E.

This is Neusa Maria - Mensagem (1959), for RCA Victor. I have been trying to understand why nobody had mention Vasilíki Purchio - Neusa Maria real name - before at Loronix. She released several 78rpms; starting in the mid 40's and ending in 1960 with a last self titled LP. Neusa Maria was born in Sao Paulo city and was a daughter of an Italian family, she moved to Rio de Janeiro in 1945 to record is first album at Continental and had a very successful singer for more than two decades. Neusa Maria has a not credited orchestra accompaniment at Mensagem, which is probably the orchestra directed by RCA Victor. Tracks include:

01 - Mensagem (Cícero Nunes / Aldo Cabral)
02 - A Banca do Distinto (Billy Blanco)
03 - Quem Foi (Nestor de Hollanda / Jorge Tavares)
04 - Se Tudo Acabar (Paulo Menezes / Gerson Gonçalves)
05 - Se Queres Saber (Peterpan)
06 - Odeio-te Meu Amor (Adelino Moreira)
07 - O Sorriso do Paulinho (Gastão Viana / Mário Rossi)
08 - Quem Sou Eu (Dolores Duran / Ribamar (1))
09 - Aperto de Mão (Jaime Florence "Meira" / Horondino Silva "Dino" / Augusto Mesquita)
10 - Porque e Para Que (Jaime Florence "Meira" / Fernando César)
11 - De Conversa Em Conversa (Lúcio Alves / Haroldo Barbosa)
12 - Na Noite Em Que Te Vi (Geraldo Serafim / Newton Castro)

Antonio Carlos Jobim, Vinicius de Moraes, Toquinho e Miucha - Musicalmente (1979)

When DVD players started getting popular in Brazil, some companies start making very cheap DVD with old movies, cartoons, documentaries, etc. Among that offer of low cost DVDs sold in newspaper stands, a company released a surprisingly good and never seen before concert recorded in Italy (1979), featuring Antonio Carlos Jobim, Vinicius de Moraes, Toquinho and Miucha. I remember it was paradise on earth, nice quality, full color and an excellent sound of a concert recorded on a very small theater with the atmosphere of a small celebration between these for great artists. This is the extracted audio, featuring 17 songs and 52 minutes of a truly amazing concert.

This is Antonio Carlos Jobim, Vinicius de Moraes, Toquinho e Miucha - Musicalmente (1979). As far I could search Musicalmente is the name of a TV Show in Italy where probably the concert was performed and record. This is an out of print and I'm glad to keep my copy bought by the time it was made available in Brazil. I'm making available two videos, Antonio Carlos Jobim and Toquinho - Wave and everybody together on Berimbau and Canto de Ossanha. Tracks include:

Djalma Ferreira e Seus Milionarios do Ritmo - Drink (1958)

I was really surprised with the time we take to identify all musicians on our last challenge, with that panorama photo presented. The legends were easy to identify, everybody know the faces of Djalma Ferreira, Miltinho and Ed Lincoln, but the enigma was the identification of the piston and bass player.

Marco Antonio Russi made a nice job identifying the piston player, Araken Peixoto, brother of the Brazilian singer Cauby Peixoto. Caetano Rodrigues give two nice hypothesis for the bass player at Cbox, Baden Powell or Waltel Branco. The Sambasonic Marcelo Munhoz made his bet on Waltel Branco and I think we really have Waltel Branco playing bass. With the challenge ending it is now time to see, sorry, hear the music.

This is Djalma Ferreira e Seus Milionarios do Ritmo - Drink (1958), for Discos Drink, gradually, we are collecting Djalma Ferreira discography at his own Discos Drink Label. Os Milionarios do Ritmo was the accompaniment band of Djalma Ferreira and several renowned musicians were member on the various formations of Milionarios do Ritmo. In this blend of instrumental and lyrics album, we have Miltinho singing in English and Portuguese, Ed Linconl and possibly the great Waltel Branco playing bass. I will let you with Djalma Ferreira music and his successful records released by his own Discos Drink. Tracks include:

Music Video | Os Cariocas - Ela e Carioca

Luiz Harding sent to us what I consider the first Os Cariocas solo video at Loronix. It is delicious to hear their performances, but it is really better to watch them singing. I don't have idea when this clip was recorded, but it is really beautiful. It was nice to see when they move the microphone away to change volumes of the vocalizations, really amazing. This is Os Cariocas - Ela e Carioca.

Hope uEnjoy!

Bob Fleming Quartet - Sax em HI-FI (1958)

Hello, Good Evening! Autumn in Rio de Janeiro was the coldest on in the last 40 years. I do not remember cold temperatures such like these on May. This is a major problem for zecalouro and for the first time I had to place a heater on his room, this should be the first night with this artificial heating. Perhaps I will move to his place if the house gets colder in the middle of the night. Today we had a lot of fun with another album from one of our favorites and I could not resist showing to Loronixers.

This is Bob Fleming Quartet - Sax em HI-FI (1958), for Musidisc, pretty old and good Bob Fleming album, his second LP for Musidisc and the second all time release by this fictional sax player, which is the legendary Moacyr Silva. Bob Fleming Quartet personnel is not credited, but I could hear the touch of Chaim Lewak on piano, the others - bass and drums - are not identified. Perhaps they are credited on first Bob Fleming Quartet album for Musidisc, Um Sax Espetacular. If someone has this LP, we appreciate to have this information. Bob Fleming Quartet performs a repertoire based on American Jazz standards, very nice for a cold Sunday night. Tracks include:

01 - Manhattan (Rodgers / Hart)
02 - I Get a Kick Out Of You (Cole Porter)
03 - Over The Rainbow (Harold Arlen / E. Y. Harburg)
04 - Who (O. Harbach / O. Hammerstein II)
05 - I Won't Cry Anymore (A. Frisch / F. Wise)
06 - An Affair To Remember (H. Adamson / L. McCarey / T. Chandler / H. Warren)
07 - Cheek To Cheek (Irving Berlin)
08 - Stormy Weather (Harold Arlen / T. Koehler)
09 - Love Letters In The Sand (J. F. Coots / N. Kenny / C. Kenny)
10 - My Funny Valentine (Rodgers / Hart)
11 - Because Of You (A. Hammerstein / D. Wilkinson)
12 - Almost Paradise (N. Petty)

Challenge | Who are these musicians?

This is a mix of Challenge and support request. I'm with an album ready to be shared with Loronixers, but I do not have personnel listing, only a panorama picture of musicians. Some of them are well known and were already identified, some other don't. Question: who are these musicians? Use the horizontal slide in the bottom to see other image parts.

Hope uEnjoy!

Victor Assis Brasil - Trajeto (1968)

I said before we had no Victor Assis Brasil videos at Loronix. I'm glad to share the first one, sent by Pedro Mendes Djembe, a great video collector that has an awesome page at YouTube with more than 150 videos of Brazilian Music and Jazz. Pedro's page is here, you will spend hours there. I recommend.

The video is just bellow, but this post is all about Victor Assis Brasil second LP and the galaxy of Brazilian musicians at the set.

This is Victor Assis Brasil - Trajeto (1968), for Equipe. This is the album I was saving for this occasion. I read today that Victor Assis Brasil won the 1969 Montreux Festival edition, accompanied by Dom Salvador, Helio Delmiro, Edson Lobo and Edison Machado, being also the best sax player of this edition. I'm wondering if there are tapes or videos available with Victor performance at Montreux. It will be a real treat to hear or watch this material. Tracks include:
