Ze Maria - Voce Quer Dancar? (1959)

Ze Maria is one of the most interesting musicians that I had the chance to know with Loronix. He has a vast discography that can be described on three different phases, being the second the most successful and well covered at Loronix with his album with Jorge Ben and others releases from the 60's. The third phase starts in the 70's, when Ze Maria released only instrumental albums with repertoire of international standards, not released at Loronix. This is the first album from his first phase, the 50's phase with Ze Maria on Para Dancar releases. Voce Quer Dancar is an above the average Para Dancar album, with lots of instruments performed by not credited musicians backing Ze Maria at the piano. Let's see.

This is Ze Maria - Voce Quer Dancar? (1959), for Internacional, once again delivering a fantastic cover with this beautiful furniture design from the 50's. Ze Maria delivers nice piano playing backed by bass, percussion, guitar, drums, vibraphone and a nice piston played by Barriquinha, the only credited musician from Ze Maria conjunto. When the first album by Maria Lucia Godoy was made available, I did not realize that people would give positive and enthusiastic feedback such like I have been receiving on emails and comment section. I think a new audience was created to Maria Lucia Godoy with her last releases, which includes myself.

Last week I received notifications of a new website referring traffic to Loronix and for my surprise, it was Maria Lucia Godoy Official Website, a recently launched tribute to this great singer. Disco de Bolso - O Tom de Antonio Carlos Jobim e o Tal de Joao Bosco (1972) Single | First Recording of Aguas de Marco

Hello, good evening! This is so far the greatest zecalouro's mother finding. Actually, not a finding, she had this little recorded since 1972 and both did not remember. She found it inside a closet and called immediately to announce her finding.

When I told her she had the first recording of Aguas de Marco, released on May, 1972, months before the "official" release at Matita Pere, she got really amazed and send it in the next day for us. This recording was released in Disco de Bolso magazine, a bonus recorded included in the anthological magazine Pasquim. Let's see.

This is Disco de Bolso - O Tom de Antonio Carlos Jobim e o Tal de Joao Bosco (1972), for Zen, featuring the Side A with the first recording of Aguas de Marco and Side B with the first recording of Joao Bosco (probably unknown by that time), performing Agnus Sei. Aguas de Marco is very different from the version released in Matita Pere, it is faster than usual and Antonio Carlos Jobim seems to have a hard time trying to sing on such speed. The recording occurs inside the studio of Sergio Ricardo, the editor of Disco de Bolso magazine, a nice idea that had only a second edition with Caetano Veloso and Fagner. This is another important piece of history being released at Loronix. Tracks include:

Dom Um Romao - The Complete Muse Recordings (1990)

Let's close this Thursday with another acclaimed artist with no solo album releases since January 16 2007, one year and two days, the Brazilian drummer, percussionist and composer Dom Um Romao, a important musician during the Bossa Nova years, taking part as sideman on several important albums, including the collaboration between Antonio Carlos Jobim and Frank Sinatra. By the way, Dom Um Romao seems to be a favorite artist of several Loronixers, his last release is among the top five of 2007, in terms of number of downloads by our community. Let's see.

Erlon Chaves - Banda Veneno Internacional (1972)

Hello, good evening! I want to start today with the very successful formula of releasing an important artist with few albums available at Loronix or not released for a long time, such as we did with the great Dez Bilhoes de Neuronios LP by Paulinho Nogueira. It is time to get back our attention again to Erlon Chaves, last released on February 2006, almost a year. Erlon Chaves is a very important maestro, with several solo records and participations as arranger on other artists albums, such as: Elis Regina, Wilson Simonal, Geraldo Vandre, Alaide Costa and many others. Let's see.

This is Erlon Chaves - Banda Veneno Internacional (1972), for Fontana, Philips subsidiary, featuring not credited musicians performing a repertoire of well-known international tunes, a choir using voice as instruments and lyrics on a few tracks. This is the first out of five albums in the same concept. Maestro Erlon Chaves arrangements to this series are based on funk music with influences of Samba and Rock. The result is a very dancing album with highlights to bass playing and creative arrangements. Tracks include:

Hello, good evening! It has been a week of really hard working for this more than ever busy parrot, but it is always a pleasure to take out of nowhere an extra energy to reach Loronix, meet our community and turn a new page of the glorious years of the music from Brazil. Perhaps I should make like Chico Buarque and save some energy to Carnaval week. Anyway, I'm bringing something that I thought it would be something very difficult to happen again, a classic Milton Banana Trio Samba Jazz LP never made available at Loronix. Let's see.

This is Milton Banana Trio - Milton Banana Trio (1970), for Odeon, an above the average Milton Banana Trio LP, equivalent to his best albums released on the mid 60's. Mestre Baden Powell wrote a very nice liner notes and if I'm not wrong, delivers a short speech at track 01 - Vou Deitar e Rolar (Quaquaraquaqua) (Baden Powell / Paulo Cesar Pinheiro). This is something to be confirmed, since it is my personal opinion. I could not find any mention on Brazil-on-guitar.de and I will be pleased if Loronixers take this track for a listen at Loronix Preview Center and try to identify Baden Powell voice. Tracks include:

Walter Goncalves - Carnaval do Meu Tempo (1957)

Hello, good evening! We are really close to another Carnaval party in Brazil, scheduled earlier this time in the beginning of February. I will try to deliver some Carnaval posts and videos this year and I want to start with this one, a beauty of an album sent by moos, from The Netherlands, by the time we spent a great time in Rio when moss came to Carnaval last year. This is Walter Goncalves, Piano, Bateria e Coro - Carnaval do Meu Tempo (1957), for Polydor. Walter Goncalves featuring an artist never released before at Loronix, Walter Goncalves, a nightclub pianist, in charge of Boite Baccarat piano for many years. The whole idea of Carnaval do Meu Tempo is a repertoire of songs from the Carnaval from the old times. Take it as Carnaval music considered old in the year of 1957, 50 years ago. Paulinho Nogueira - Dez Bilhoes de Neuronios (1972)

If there is an artist I need to know more about, I'm sure this artist is Paulinho Nogueira, a very important Brazilian guitarist and composer with more than one hundred albums recorded, including singles, EPs and participations. Loronix has only three Paulinho Nogueira career LPs and most his vast discography never had CD reissues. I think we have a good choice to start filling this gap with the first Paulinho Nogueira LP to Continental. Let's see.

This is Paulinho Nogueira - Dez Bilhoes de Neuronios (1972), for Continental, produced by Walter Silva and arranged by a dream team of Maestros, Rogerio Duprat, Luiz Arruda Paes and Jose Briamonte. I thought Paulinho Nogueira albums were all instrumental, such strong is his association as a guitarist and this album brings a repertoire with some cuts with lyrics. Rogerio Duprat, Luiz Arruda Paes and Jose Briamonte are responsible for individual tracks arrangements with a single exception 05 - Menina, featuring individual arrangements by the trio of maestros with each one using a different approach. The outcome is very interesting, with the blend of the arrangements on a single one by Rogerio Duprat. Tracks include:

Alan Gordon & Hugo Lander - Dois Americanos no Rio (1958)

Hello, good evening! Until this post, Alan Gordon and Hugo Lander were American musicians that recorded a couple of albums with the Brazilian organist Jorge Henrique in the late 50's. I always had a great curiosity about them and this album brings more clarification about the duo. The started playing together in Europe, early 50's, and then decided to come to Brazil in 1957. They recorded two albums with Jorge Henrique, being this one the first were they perform as the original duo of piano and drums. Let's see.

This is Alan Gordon & Hugo Lander - Dois Americanos no Rio (1958), for Radio, featuring Alan Gordon (piano) and Hugo Lander (voice, drums), performing a repertoire of American standards and a single Brazilian song, Foi a Noite (Antonio Carlos Jobim / Newton Mendonca). However, they were not born in the US, Alan Gordon was born in China and Hugo Lander in Romania. I got all this information from Alan Gordon's son, which is the legendary Brazilian guitarist Lanny Gordin, available at Jornaleco. Dorival Caymmi - Caymmi e Seu Violao (1959)

I received a call from a friend that loves Brazilian music, but does not have much patience or computer skills to use Loronix Find It and search for the music he is looking for. It is better this way, he has a great sense of humor and I have a lot of fun when he calls to ask for help with Loronix matters. He called this afternoon looking for "the pink Caymmi album with Caymmi and violao only", according with his own words.

When I reached this album, made available in June 2006 with ZERO comments, I told him to wait 24 hours and check Loronix front page. The first thing I did was searching for my vinyl to make a new copy and produce better cover scans. This album is an essential and really needs a better approach and a whole day at the front page. Let's see.

This is Dorival Caymmi - Caymmi e Seu Violao (1959), for Odeon, with production and direction of Aloysio de Oliveira. According with Luiz Americo and his 100 Discos Fundamentais da Musica Popular Brasileira collection, Odeon executives did not believe that an album with only Caymmi's voice and violao would be commercially viable, since other artists previously recorded all songs with orchestra and conjunto accompaniment, being the single exception 08 - O Bem do Mar. But the tireless Aloysio de Oliveira could make it and this album still sounds fresh almost 50 years before recorded. Dorival Caymmi was on his peak, delivering definitive renditions of his own repertoire. Now I can rest assured this masterpiece has the place deserved at Loronix. Tracks include:

Special Post | Dick Farney Documentary

This is a moving documentary with 17 minutes running time with a tribute to Dick Farney broadcasted on Brazilian TV by the time of his passing. There are available excerpts of old movies, Dick Farney performances that I never saw before, interviews with Lucio Alves, Braguinha, Billy Blanco and a beautiful closing with Dick Farney's wife interview at the couple place. Fascinating, even if you don’t understand Portuguese it is really worth checking.

Cartola - Cartola (1975)

Hello, good evening! I'm starting this Sunday with a beauty of an album that deserves to be the main post of the night. I could not wait longer to show it to Loronixers so great is my enthusiasm with this little record that was abandoned on my closet for many months. This is Cartola debut LP, recorded when he had the age of 65. You should take this one for a try, even if you do not understand Portuguese or are not a Samba fan. I recommend. Let's see.

This is Cartola - Cartola (1975), for Marcus Pereira. It is amazing that Cartola, which started his career in the 30's, could only record his first album in 1975. Cartola sings his own compositions and how beautiful is his singing, he was recorded many renowned Brazilian artists across decades and now I'm sure the best Cartola interpreter is Cartola. The session had Maestro Horondino Jose da Silva, also known as Dino Sete Cordas, in charge of the arrangements and musicians were all credited by Marcus Pereira label. Tracks include:
