Paulinho Nogueira - Sambas de Ontem e Hoje (1961)

Hello, good evening! I can't remember a rain such like we are receiving in Rio de Janeiro. It is a non-stopping rain that lasts three or four days. The beach gets empty and people stay in their places, which was my option yesterday, when I took a time to hear some albums to take them in consideration at Loronix. This one is an outcome of this evaluation. Let's see.

This is Paulinho Nogueira - Sambas de Ontem e Hoje (1961), for RGE, the third Paulinho Nogueira solo LP, backed by Conjunto RGE with no credits to arranger and musician. This cover, with the message "Music for Tourists" cheats me, I always considered this album some sort of Para Dancar release, but Paulinho Nogueira delivers again a really nice album with very good guitar playing on top of a nice repertoire of Sambas and Bossa Nova cuts. Johnny Alf - O Que e Amar (1988)

Hello, good evening! If you consider that Elizeth Cardoso - Cancao do Amor Demais (1958) landmarks the birth of Bossa Nova, this is the year where Bossa Nova celebrates its 50th anniversary. Cancao do Amor Demais features for the first time Joao Gilberto's violao beat on tracks Chega de Saudade and Outra Vez. I have been very busy this year and my perception is that we do not have so far a consistent activity devoted to this great event. Additionally, I can't remember any album released to celebrate Bossa Nova 50 years. That's why I'm making available this album, a very well done compilation celebrating Bossa Nova 30 years, featuring one of its main characters, Johnny Alf. Let's see.

This is Johnny Alf - O Que e Amar (1988), for RCA. Finally, Johnny Alf is back to Loronix. His last solo album was made available in June 2007, it is a long time and it is important that everybody knows Johnny Alf, a true genius and unbelievable underestimated. He was the one that introduced to many other renowned artists a new way of singing, playing and performing several years before the birth of Bossa Nova. It is time to celebrate Bossa Nova and celebrate Johnny Alf. Tracks include:

Moreira da Silva - O Ultimo Malandro (1959)

With no previous announcement, Loronix started on Monday a new method of displaying album covers, larger and deluxe versions with better quality. I believe that after 5 days, with no problem diagnosed or reported by friends, I will make this new method as official. I'm having a lot of fun with this new style; it loads faster, reducing the time needed to load Loronix completely. In the other hand, I'm frustrated for not having time to adjust all previous covers available.

I want to celebrate this new feature showing one of the most beautiful covers that I had a chance to see, featuring a true legend of a very old Samba style, known as Samba, Breque. Let's see.

V Festival Internacional da Cancao Vol. 2 (1970)

I have been wondering why Loronix does not have a representative number of recordings from the legendaries Festivais da Cancao, a fever in Brazilian music by the end of the 60's decade. I have some assumptions, in spite of its importance, perhaps they are not popular among our community or I failed on making the choices in the few albums already available. Perhaps the root cause is my total ignorance about the period, anyway, I'm trying to fix this approach with a new album, which seems quite appropriate considering the performers and repertoire. Let's see.

This is V Festival Internacional da Cancao Vol. 2 (1970), for Odeon. First of all, as an international festival, why this album does not feature international performers? Additionally, why the albums in the style do not bring information about the winners and prizes? Better show this one and open the discussion. Do not miss the music videos featuring Geraldo Vandre performing with Trio Maraya and Quarteto Novo on some Festival da Cancao edition. Sergio Endrigo - Exclusivamente Brasil (1979)

Hello, good evening! This is the first in a series of contributions made by a new friend of our community, Gabriele, a sincere Brazilian music lover and also an expert on computers, he taught me to transfer files using a technology that I did not know, very good indeed. It is not necessary to say that Gabriele lives in Italy and his contributions make the connection between Brazilian and Italian music, such this first, featuring a Sergio Endrigo album recorded in Brazil with Brazilian musicians, special guests and tunes. This is Sergio Endrigo - Exclusivamente Brasil (1979), for Philips, with the special guests Vinicius de Moraes, Toquinho, Fafa de Belem and Chico Buarque de Hollanda. The session was held in Rio de Janeiro and Philips did not credited musicians, Pena Froes, Perinho Albuquerque and Luiz Roberto from Os Cariocas are in charge of arrangements. Joao Bosco - Tiro de Misericordia (1977)

I cannot remember if this is the first contribution made by the powerful AdHoc with music transferred from vinyl, instead of CD. There is a huge technical difference between both transfers, everything is simple with a CD, the audio is transferred by a digital process, no noise, and the covers are small and easy to transfer in any scanner. In the other hand, vinyl transfers are different and complex; you should play the whole album while transferring and later use noise reduction software, having in mind the balance between improving against loosing sound quality. I got tired only defining the audio transfer, but the cover is also a pain, it is necessary to scan and stitch four parts of the cover to make a single one.

All to say and thank AdHoc for this amazing and professional vinyl transfer that seems to be from a CD, but was transferred from vinyl, since inexplicably, Tiro de Misericordia never had a chance to be released on CD. Let's see.

This is Joao Bosco - Tiro de Misericordia (1977), for RCA, the fourth Joao Bosco career album, preceded by the excellent Galos de Briga, Caca a Raposa e Joao Bosco self-titled debut album, released in 1973. Tiro de Misericordia (Mercy Shot) brings compositions of Joao Bosco with Aldir Blanc, a frequent collaborator at the start of Joao Bosco career and Cristina Buarque - again! - singing on track 06 - Vaso Ruim Nao Quebra. Hello, good evening! Yesterday I was very tired; actually, I was really exhausted, with several non-sleeping hours accumulated in the previous day. After posting Chico Buarque and Cristina single, I went to my room couch to read the back cover of this fantastic Mario Albanese LP, supposed to be yesterday's closing post. I slept accidentally on the couch, waking up in the morning with the zecalouro shouting "good day" and demanding my attention. I believe it is fair to start today showing Mario Albanese and his debut LP for Odeon. Let's see.

This is Mario Albanese e Seu Conjunto - Insonia (1959), for Odeon. I think Caetano Rodrigues will be amazes with this pretty unknown Mario Albanese album, which is his debut LP for Odeon. Instead of being in the safe zone performing renditions of standards, Mario Albanese delivers his own compositions at his first album, with his piano backed by Conjunto. Little I know about Mario Albanese e Seu Conjunto members, but I'm quite sure we have here a very solid listen that you should taste at Loronix Preview Center and then come back here to get the whole experience provided by the great Mario Albanese. Ademilde Fonseca - A Rainha Ademilde e Seus Choroes Maravilhosos (1977)

Here we go on an artist very requested by Loronix community. Actually, the community is responsible for the last series of posts featuring Ademilde Fonseca, considered the best singer of a genre more recognized as instrumental music. Ademilde Fonseca has the undisputable recognition of Rainha do Choro, being respected by every traditional Choro musician, such as the ones at this album, recorded by MIS, Museu da Imagem do Som. Let's see.

This is Ademilde Fonseca - A Rainha Ademilde e Seus Choroes Maravilhosos (1977), recorded by Copacabana with the sponsorship of MIS, Museu da Imagem do Som, the last career LP recorded by Ademilde Fonseca, featuring a Choro group assembled only for this recording session, Grupo de Choroes. The repertoire brings classic Choro compositions with Ademilde Fonseca performing on six tracks and accompanied by Grupo dos Choroes. The other tracks are instrumental, performed by Grupo dos Choroes. Important reading | Carlos Lyra interview to Gravata

Just to let everybody aware of a Carlos Lyra interview given for my very good friend Gravata at Jornal O Globo, Rio de Janeiro. Carlos Lyra says something very important about Loronix, which is the opportunity Loronix provides to make out of print albums available to the public. Carlos Lyra statement matches with one of the most important rules of Loronix that makes available only albums that are no longer available commercially. At Loronix, if I know that an album is commercially available anywhere in the world, I will not offer it for download.

Carlos Lyra's words are a major step to Loronix evolution and I would like to thank Gravata for making this interview that took me by surprise this morning. At a time when we celebrate Bossa Nova´s 50th anniversary, internet surfers are attracted to a web site that offers rare discs which are no longer found in record stores, but can be downloaded for free. It´s Zeca Louro´s blog, http://loronix.blogspot.com. There you can find gems like "Canção do Amor Demais" (1958) where Elizeth Cardoso sings for the first time some Jobim - Vinicius classics; the historical "Au Bon Gourmet" show (1962) where, for the for the first time Jobim, Vinicius, João Gilberto and Os Cariocas appeared together. Not to mention the antological "Chega de Saudade" (1959) where João Gilberto sings three songs by Carlos Lyra, one of Bossa Nova´s pioneers. Now we have Lyra talking about it:

- It is easier to find your rare career albums in foreign countries than in Brazil. Why?

Lira - Not just rare albums, but all of them. In Japan´s Tower Records there is a whole section with my discs. There you can find LPs that have later been released as CDs, as well as compilations that they made. I can only conclude that the intellectual level in Japan is much higher than in Brazil.

- There are sites, like Loronix, that offer such rarities for free. What is your opinion about it?

Lira - Loronix, as far as I know, is a site that offers only discs which are no longer sold and, therefore, cannot be purchased by anybody. It is an incentive to record labels which, now, can identify the ones which are being downloaded more frequently and release them again. There are some albums which are not available in Brazil but are sold in the US or Japan and, therefore, can be acquired though the internet; in my opinion, they should not be offered for free. It is important to understand that composers live off they works. It is somehow difficult to make people understand that this is our job, and we cannot simply give off what we create. It is our daily bread.

Zezinho e Os Copacabana - Mesa de Pista (1957)

This album is among the ones that I like most when first released in June 2007 using an Imperial reissue as Zezinho e Os Copacabana - Um Coquetel, Uma Danca. Here we go with an update, now featuring the first issue by Odeon in 1957 as Mesa de Pista, instead Imperial commercial Um Coquetel, Uma Danca name. I never had the chance to see the first issue cover and it is much better than my best dreams. This is an anthological album, featuring important musicians, which has been the object of an academic research by a University in the United States. This is something that makes me feel very proud of Loronix. This updates brings the original cover artwork and original Odeon 1957 audio, including the FLAC option. I'm gathering the original June 2007 writing with minor adjustments. I hope everybody have a lot of fun with this nice album.

This is probably the surprise of the month, part of the new series of instrumental albums from the late 50’s to early 60’s. We have been discussing this kind of albums today; they were very common by these decades and were also known as “Para Dancar” or “For Dancing”, in English. Waldir Calmon is probably the musician that made more records in the style, releasing more than 10 albums with “Para Dancar” at the front cover. Some of these albums have only a single and big track on each side, perfect for dancing with no interruptions.

This is Zezinho e Os Copacabana - Mesa de Pista (1957), for Odeon. Caetano Rodrigues said yesterday that collectors track down Maestro Zezinho albums and they pay a good price for them. They are right, the album is delicious to hear and Maestro Zezinho performs the music with the assistance of a constellation of Brazilian musicians. Some tracks have lyrics, sung by a non-identified singer with a nice voice, I have my guess who is the crooner, but I will let you try first. zecalouro says (2008): The crooner is Zezinho!! Mauricio Einhorn - Me (1980)

I was postponing this post for several days, just because I did not feel capable to write something meaningful and appropriate to the importance of this artist to Brazilian music. This post is an update, perhaps one of the most important among many others that need improvements and best approach to our community. Maurício Einhorn is a true legend, one of the most original musicians on his instrument -- the harmonica -- and one of the most important Brazilian popular music composers for decades. Let's see.

This is Mauricio Einhorn - ME (1980), for Clam/Continental, the debut LP of an artist that started professionally in the year of 1947, recorded for the first time in 1949 with an harmonica band, the Brazilian Rascals, had a composition recorded for the first time in 1960, Sambop (Mauricio Einhorn / Durval Ferreira), but could only release his first solo LP in 1980. Anyway, it is not necessary to say that you cannot miss this one, ME is an excellent album, featuring Mauricio Einhorn compositions and his outstanding harmonica playing backed by a constellation of Brazilian musicians. Monarco - Monarco (1976)

I think this is a perfect close of our first 2008 Samba Saturday at Loronix. Monarco is considered one of the greatest Samba composers in Brazil and never had an approach at Loronix. This is one of the greatest findings of my mother, an album where everything works close to perfection. Monarco performs his compositions backed by a constellation of Brazilian musicians and although recording only a few albums across decades, he is a wonderful Samba interpreter. Let's see.

This is Monarco - Monarco (1976), for Continental, the first Monarco career LP, featuring the participation of Velha Guarda da Portela, which is a group of renowned Samba artists of Escola de Samba Portela in Rio de Janeiro. Monarco has Ze Menezes in charge of arrangements and features Neco, Dino 7 Cordas, Jorginho, Luizao, Wilson das Neves and many others. I think you cannot skip this one, even if you are not a Samba fan. Tracks include:

Noite Ilustrada - Noite Ilustrada (1969)

Here we go on our first Loronix Samba Saturday of 2008, showing an artist that deserves a better approach at Loronix, the legendary Brazilian singer Mario de Souza Marques Filho, widely known as Noite Ilustrada, a very important singer with a recording career that spans decades. Noite Ilustrada debut LP is already available at Loronix and has one of the nicest covers I have ever seen, just follow this link, here. Let's see.

This is Noite Ilustrada - Noite Ilustrada (1969), for Continental, featuring orchestra accompaniement with not credited Maestro, arranger and musicians. Mario de Souza Marques Filho received the artistic name of Noite Ilustrada in his first performance as an artist when the show host, Ze Trindade, forgot his name and took from Noite Ilustrada paints the magazine Noite Ilustrada and had the idea of announce the new singer as Noite Ilustrada. This album is the first out of four releases by Noite Ilustrada in the same year of 1969. Tracks include:
