This is an out of print and hard to find Marcos Valle LP from 1986, O Tempo da Gente, never released in CD. This LP closes a cycle on Marcos Valle career, when Marcos stopped releasing albums and concentrated on writing music for other artists as well as for movies and television.
Loronixers had the chance to known one of Marcos Valle work to Brazilian TV with the LP Vila Sesamo - Brazilian version of Sesame Stree Show. zecalouro is now making available a YouTube video at the end of this post showing a Marcos Valle visit at Vila Sesamo playing O Tema de Garibaldo. Manfredo Fest Trio - Alma Brasileira (1966)
This is really great stuff, the first LP of Manfredo Fest and his Trio, simply beautiful all the way through with Manfredo Fest (piano), Mathias Mattos (bass) and Heitor Guy (drums).
Manfredo is a real Jazzman, influenced by Bill Evans, Oscar Peterson e George Shearing. Manfredo has a classical background, blind since birth, he learned to play the piano by Braille. It is not his debut at Loronix, however, Manfredo deserves an AMG bio. Tracks include:

One of the better-kept secrets among Brazil's bossa nova pioneers, Manfredo Fest's popularity and profile rose dramatically in the 1990s. Legally blind since birth, Fest's greatest early influence was George Shearing, but he developed his own approach apart from Shearing and other Brazilian jazz pianists, unleashing relentlessly flowing streams of bop-flavored notes against a Brazilian pulse, occasionally letting his classical roots show.
Fest's father, an émigré from Germany, was a concert pianist who chaired the University of Porto Alegre's music department. Accordingly, Fest studied classical piano as a youth, learning to read music in Braille, but after graduating from the University of Rio Grande do Sul, his tastes had turned toward jazz and samba. Fest was part of the gathering of Brazilian musicians of the late-'50s who were developing the bossa nova movement, and he made a number of trio recordings in that vein from 1961 to 1966. After emigrating to Minneapolis in 1967, Fest moved to Los Angeles where he served as keyboardist and arranger for Bossa Rio and toured with Sergio Mendes. By 1973, Fest had moved to Chicago, playing there and on the Playboy Club circuit and in 1988, he settled in Palm Harbor, FL. After recording for a few independent labels, Fest finally achieved a breakthrough in the American market upon signing with Concord Picante in the early '90s, producing a series of energetic, Brazilian-flavored, bop-grounded, small-group albums. While awaiting a liver transplant, he died October 8, 1999, at the age of 63.

Abilio Manoel - Pena Verde (1970)
It will be nice to show Loronixers an excelente Brazilian artist from the 60's to 70's (but still active) Abilio Manoel. Abilio is acclaimed by SambaRock (Trio Mocoto, Jorge Ben) fans. This is Pena Verde, recorded in 1970 and it is the second LP released by Abilio. Although celebrated, Abilio did not reach a good level of popularity.

It is time to celebrate Baden Powell de Aquino with Baden Powell Quartet 1970 LP, Lotus. This LP was recorded live on a French TV show. This album is the first Baden release for the French label Festival and is considered today a rare collectors item.

This obscure LP from the early 60's is known as to be one of the first recording of the rhythm legend Airto Moreira, credited here as Airto Guimorvã for reasons that zecalouro could not check.

Doris Monteiro - Minhas Musicas (1954)
zecalouro presents Doris Monteiro - Minhas Musicas (1954) 10", consensually, Doris debut LP by Loronixers. It is pretty hard for zecalouro to identify debut LPs for the artists starting in the 50's. In the 50's, the recordings were shifting to the LP standard and this is really confusing for a parrot that struggles to gather information.
zecalouro is with this LP for months, but was postponing the release since the only artwork available was with the size of a matchbox with very low quality. Thanks the Loronixer Arara-Azul (Blue Macaw) from Germany for the great effort to make this nice and wonderful digitalization. zecalouro will celebrate his hard work with the magnificent Hyacinth Macaw photo illustrating the AMG bio for Doris Monteiro.

Dóris Monteiro has had over 50 years of a career filled with success, both as a singer and as an actress. One of the earliest singers to interpret the bossa nova, Monteiro has recorded over 20 solo LPs.
At 13 (in 1947), Dóris Monteiro had her debut on radio in the novice show Papel Carbono at the Rádio Nacional. She won the weekly contest for several weeks in a row. In the next year she started to work regularly in the Rádio Tupi. In 1951 she recorded her first album, the 78 rpm Se Você Se Importasse (Peter Pan), which stayed in first place in the charts for three months. Embracing the first wave of bossa nova without quitting her main vein, the samba-canção, she had several other big hits: "Agulha no Palheiro,'' "Graças a Deus" (Fernando César), "Mocinho Bonito" (Billy Blanco), "Gostoso É Sambar" (João Melo), "Samba de Verão" (Marcos Valle/Paulo Sérgio Valle), "Mudando de Conversa" (Maurício Tapajós/Hermínio Bello de Carvalho), "Dó-Ré-Mi" (Fernando César), "Joga a Rede No Mar" (Fernando César/Nazareno de Brito), "Apelo" (Baden Powell), "Palhaçada," "É isso Aí," and "Alô Fevereiro."
The success also took her to the cinema. She starred in Agulha no Palheiro (Alex Viany) and was elected the Best Actress of 1953. She worked in seven other films, including the Italian production Copacabana Palace. In 1955 she had a season in the Cassino de Punta del Este (Uruguay) and, in 1957, performed as a duo with Dorival Caymmi in Lisbon and Coimbra (Portugal). In October 1990 Monteiro performed in Osaka, Nagoya, and Tokyo (Japan). In that country, she was invited by Lisa Ono to record "Praia Nova" (Lisa Ono/Paulo César Pinheiro), included in Bossa Nova Underground. Doris Monteiro has continued to perform into the next millennium.

Walter Wanderley career was so long and with so many releases that we never end to discover new LPs. Someone told zecalouro that Walter Wanderley is so gifted that he could not release a bad record.

It is time to meet for the first time at Loronix another Brazilian organist from the 60's, Ely Acoverde and the 1965 (what a year) LP Ely Arcoverde Quarteto, which is Ely organ plus drums, bass and an acoustic guitar blending nicely with Ely.
This LP has a dark and sinister feel that makes it sounds very different from the 60's stardards. Really unique. Tracks include:

Lana Bittencourt - Lana no 1800 (1965) Ao Vivo
Lana Bittencourt reputation as a Brazilian Diva skyrocketed with her last Loronix release - Sambas do Rio. Taking advantage of this great Lana momentum, zecalouro proudly presents this out of print LP with a live recording of her 1965 show at Restaurante Rio 1800 in Rio de Janeiro.

Mario Albanese - Jequibau (1965)

Mario Albanese is a pianist with a classical background and an important Brazilian music researcher. Being also a journalist, Mario Albanese had an active production of articles and reviews for several Brazilian newspapers, TV and Radio shows as well. With Cyro Pereira, which was his partner on most of his compositions, Mario Albanese invented the "Jequibau", an unique rhythm based on a 5/4 compass based and influenced by the Brazilian folklore.
The Jequibau rhythm had a moment of glory in Europe and United States acclaimed by other musicians and specialized press. However, Jequibau never got popularity and it is a cult piece for any serious vinyl collectors around the word.

José Lidio Cordeiro aka Papudinho is the legendary Brazilian trumpet player and arranger that you are already used to hear at the 1964 LP - Conjunto Som 4 and his friends Azeitona, Hermeto Pascoal and Edilson.

It is time to celebrate a late debut of a wonderful composer from the 60's and 70's at Loronix, Silvio Cesar, with his 1965 LP, So Tinha de Ser com Silvio Cesar, a nice pick among many others released by Silvio in the 60's. This album landmarks Silvio Cesar contract at Aloysio de Oliveira Odeon label, with arrangements of Lyrio Panicali and participation of J.T. Meirelles, Celso Murilo and Geraldo Vespar.

A celebrated composer of a considerable quantity of songs recorded by Elis Regina, Sérgio Mendes, Elizeth Cardoso, João Donato, Ângela Maria, Roberto Carlos, Alcione, Os Cariocas, Cauby Peixoto, Emílio Santiago, Elza Soares, Hermeto Pascoal, Leny Andrade, Jair Rodrigues, and Nana Caymmi, among others, Sílvio César had a noted participation in the group that renovated samba in the 1960s (Orlandivo, César, Ed Lincoln, and Pedrinho Rodrigues). Along with his solo discography, César also worked in TV and cinema.
César became a professional in 1959 as the crooner of the Waldemar Spillman orchestra. Performing at the historic Beco das Garrafas (Bottles' Alley, a point of jazz and bossa in the '50s in Rio) he met Ed Lincoln, with whom he'd write hits like "Olhou Pra Mim," "Nunca Mais," and others. In the next year, he had his first single launched with "Máxima Culpa" (Sérgio Ricardo) and "Manhã Sem Adeus" (Luís Bonfá). The first LP, Amor Demais, came in 1961. César appeared in some of the most popular historic TV shows of the '60s and '70s, like Jovem Guarda, O Fino da Bossa, and Essa Noite se Improvisa, among others. He also worked in films like Na Onda do Iê-iê-iê (as the composer of the soundtrack, with Lincoln, and also as an actor) and Mineirinho/Vivo ou Morto (writing the soundtrack). His "Mônica" and "Se Tiver De Ser" (both with Lincoln) were included on the soundtrack of the film Na Onda do Iê-iê-iê (Aurélio Teixeira). In 1974, his "O Moço Velho" was re-recorded by Roberto Carlos in the same year. César wrote several songs included on major TV Globo soap opera soundtracks, such as "Levante Os Olhos" (Duas Vidas, 1975), "Agarre Seu Homem," with Ronaldo Bôscoli (Te Contei?, 1978), and "A Mais Antiga Profissão" (O Jogo da Vida, 1981). His albums Aos Mestres Com Carinho (1992) and Aos Mestres Com Carinho/Vol. 2 (1994) were filled with MPB classics and had the participation of Tom Jobim, Chico Buarque, Leny Andrade, Emílio Santiago, Nonato Luiz, and Quarteto em Cy, among others.

Marisa Gata Mansa e Denise Duran - Canções e Saudades de Dolores (1960)
This obscure LP, Marisa Gata Mansa e Denise Duran - Cancoes e Saudades de Dolores (1969) is probably the greatest enigma ever at Loronix. zecalouro could not find it on any discography at the Internet. The LP is not part of Marisa Gata Mansa discography and Denise Duran - which is probably Dolores Duran sister - is not credit as a singer on any structured resource zecalouro could reach.

Jair Rodrigues - Eu Sou o Samba (1975)
Along these nice days of Loronix more that 300 LPs were posted. Several Brazilian music styles and variations were presented from instrumental music to singing. But zecalouro never made available an LP like this one.
This is Jair Rodrigues - Eu Sou o Samba (1975), Jair Rodrigues never seems to get tired and you will never get seated and relaxed with this LP. Jair makes a nice album when sometimes you think that he is using a Samba School bateria on the set, almost impossible to stay seated, will feel on the mood to stand-up and kick around the house. Eu Sou o Samba is a relief to make your day on those mornings that you fell badly. This is a courtesy of our Loronix friend Rogelio. Tracks include:

Clara Nunes - Voce Passa e Eu Acho Graça (1968)
We had the chance to know Clara Nunes debut LP, A Voz Adoravel de Clara Nunes a few posts ago and we understood she was a complete different singer by that time in terms of repertoire, interpretation and identification with Samba, which is the genre Clara Nunes is widely recognized.
This LP, the second Clara Nunes LP, Você Passa e Eu Acho Graça (1968), landmarks her transition to Samba, mostly by the enhancement of the repertoire, with the introduction of classic Samba compositions and songs from "modern" composer, such as Chico Buarque and Antonio Carlos Jobim.
Clara is more confortable on this LP and really close to the genre of her choice. Special attention to the song Voce Passa e Eu Acho Graca, which is the album title and the song of a video early presented by zecalouro a few weeks ago. Tracks include:

Nice early 60's Samba LP full of that huge brass and string orchestral arrangements very common in the 50's. The cover is cool, with a landscape of Rio de Janeiro showing Pao de Acucar mountain, probably taken from Niteroi, anyway. Tracks include:

Former member of the historic Northeastern jazz group Quarteto Novo, Heraldo do Monte also developed an important solo career. His album Cordas Vivas (1983) was already released in 22 countries. He has played with Michel Legrand, Dick Farney, Zimbo Trio, Walter Wanderley, and Paulo Moura and performed abroad in international festivals of Cuba, Montreal, and Montreux. He already became a professional in Rio, playing with Walter Wanderley in 1956 and with Dick Farney in 1960. His first recording came as a sessionman in a Dolores Duran album, with Walter Wanderley. His first solo album was recorded in 1960, Heraldo E Seu Conjunto. He wrote all of the arrangements for the group Os Cincopados and participated in their 1965 recording. As a member of the Orquestra de Carlos Piper, he was awarded with the Guarani and Roquette Pinto trophies (1965). With the group Quarteto Novo, he was also awarded with the Roquette Pinto and received the Imprensa trophy twice. In 1975, he backed Michel Legrand in his live performances at the Teatro Municipal of São Paulo. He also performed with the Zimbo Trio. In 1980, he performed and recorded an album with Elomar and Arthur Moreira Lima, and, two years later, he did the same with Elomar, Arthur Moreira Lima, and Paulo Moura in the famous show ConSertão. In 1997, the four of them played together again in the Kaiser Bock Winter Festival. In 1988, he participated in the Montreal International Jazz Festival (Canada). He also participated in the Montreux and Cuba festivals. In 1994 and 1995 he was awarded with the Prêmio Sharp as arranger of two Dominguinhos' albums. His ''Chuva Morna,'' included in O Piano Brasileiro de Arthur Moreira Lima, is one of his songs recorded by famous interpreters. In 1997, together with Arthur Moreira Lima and Paulo Moura, he represented Brazil in the Caribbean International Music Festival. In 1998 he arranged, conducted, and played in the album Baião: 50 Anos de Poesia, Ritmo e Emoção, together with Hermeto Pascoal, Sivuca, Renato Borghetti, Oswaldinho, and Dominguinhos. In June, he played with the French guitar player Raphael Fays at the Sesc Ipiranga (São Paulo). In 2000, he participated in the Moacir Santos tribute at the Memorial da América Latina, São Paulo, with Johnny Alf, Leila Pinheiro, Roberto Sion, Teco Cardoso, and Mané Silveira.

Doris Monteiro - Confidencias de Doris Monteiro (1956)
I've got to admit it's getting better, a little better all the time, specially if you have the chance to know this rare LP from a very early Doris Monteiro. Released in 1956, all songs are composed by Fernando Cesar. There is a wonderful story behind this composer, actually, Fernando Cesar was a businessman, and he was the owner of a soup factory in Rio de Janeiro, UFE, most known as Sabao Portugues.
And he composed a lot with almost a hundred composition recorded by several artists. Doris Monteiro was his favorite Brazilian singer and had the help of Fernando Cesar on this LP, since all songs are Fernando's compositions. Tracks includes:

This is the greatest Brazilian bandolim legend, Jacob Pick Bittencourt that took his instrument as part of his name, Jacob do Bandolim. Jacob is the most important musician of choro genre. In spite his active career, Jacob never was a professional musician and is the artist behind the most renowned choro compositions and recordings.

Jacob do Bandolim is one of the first names in the history of the choro genre. A serious and dedicated musician, he instilled a high degree of professionalism in the traditionally relaxed music -- even if he was never a professional himself (he made a living as a notary). He struggled to preserve Brazilian roots, and fought to impose his artistic sincerity on the music industry. He left important compositions that were incorporated in the repertory of chorões.
The son of a middle-class family, do Bandolim followed formal studies until his completion of the accounting course of study. In 1930, when he was 12, he became strongly motivated by the music of a blind violinist who was his neighbor. Asking his mother to give him a violin, he left the bow of the instrument aside, picking the strings with hairpins. After many broken strings, his mother gave him a mandolin at the suggestion of another neighbor.
His first performance as an amateur was three years later, at the Grêmio dos Estudantes Israelitas. In December of that year, he performed for the first time on Rádio Guanabara. In those times, he was already a brilliant mandolinist, and also a good violonista (acoustic guitarist) and cavaquinho player. In the next year, he won his first important contest at Rádio Guanabara, invited by Benedito Lacerda. Accompanied by Carlos Lentine, Luís Bittencourt, Canhoto, and Russo do Pandeiro, his group was named Jacob e Sua Gente by the show director, and was awarded the maximum grade given by the professional jury in a contest disputed by other 27 participants. Jacob e Sua Gente became a regular on Rádio Guanabara, alternating with the Regional de Benedito Lacerda and the Gente do Morro group in the accompaniment of professional singers and musicians like Noel Rosa, Herivelto Martins, Dunga, Joel e Gaúcho, Elizeth Cardoso, Ataulfo Alves, Lamartine Babo, Araci de Almeida, and Carlos Galhardo. But do Bandolim never became a professional musician because he knew he would have lost his musical personality -- which was a very purist one. Instead, he held several jobs as a salesman or hawker, becoming a notary in 1940 and keeping that job until his death. In 1935, he joined the Conjunto da Rádio Ipanema, one of the three important groups of his life, initially directed by Mário Silva and later directed by himself. The group featured César Faria (after 1939) and Claudionor Cruz (violões, or acoustic guitars), Léo Cardoso (afoxê), and Candinho (drums). In 1943, by insistence of his future father-in-law, he abandoned his radio work, returning at the explicit desire of his wife, Adylia, in 1945 at Rádio Mauá. His first album was recorded in October 1947 with Continental (a company for whom he worked until 1949), having the hit "Remeleixo." In July 1949, do Bandolim moved to RCA Victor, recording eight albums until October 1950. From March 1951 on, for the next ten years, he was accompanied by the Regional do Canhoto. In July 1961, the recording of Chorinhos e Chorões marked the opening of the group Época de Ouro, the third important group of his life, and one of the most prominent of all time in the genre. The group used other names until the LP Vibrações, which was released in October 1967 and is considered one of the best of all time. Do Bandolim's imposed weekly rehearsals on Fridays and sometimes on Saturdays were rigorous. During those rehearsals the musicians sweated profusely, because the slightest mistake was accompanied by terrible admonishing in do Bandolim's resounding voice. O Conjunto Farroupilha - Os Farroupilhas na TV (1960)
O Conjunto Farroupilha is a band from Brazil South - the same region that gave us Elis Regina and others - dedicated to folkloric and regional music that later moved to Sao Paulo and adhere the Bossa Nova wave. They also have some German influence, since Brazil South had significant Germany migration in the early twenty century.

Initially dedicated to folkloric and regional repertory, recording with success "Gauchinha Bem-Querer," "Piazito Carreteiro," "Prenda Minha," "Boi Barroso," "Chimarrita Balão," "Negrinho do Pastoreio," and "Pezinho," they also had success in the 1960s in the bossa nova genre. Triste Janero - Meet Triste Janero (1968) USA Bossa Nova
zecalouro is felling miserable again today with this hard flu he got. He woke up fine this morning but had the stupid idea to take his recumbent to meet some friends at Aterro do Flamengo.
