This is Elza Soares - Nos Bracos do Samba (1975), for Tapecar, a mid-70's Elza Soares album featuring Ed Lincoln playing several roles, arranger in all tracks, production and musical direction. I learned with this album that Ed Lincoln has also collaborated with Elza Soares on other two mid 70's releases. There is no need to write much, it is Saturday a traditional Samba day at Loronix and Elza is always self-explanatory. Take a special attention on a very beautiful insert at the size of a LP with lyrics. Tracks include:

Sergio Mendes & Brasil '66 - Look Around (1968)

I think this album adds several things to my education on Sergio Mendes. Caetano sent it to Loronixers in the last package, thanks Caetano for it. The last Sergio Mendes at Loronix was The Swinger from Rio, recorded in 1968 was all instrumental and based upon Bossa Nova standards with Antonio Carlos Jobim participation and several songs by Jobim. Look Around was recorded three years later in 1968 and what we see here is a major change of direction, this album is pop and in the same time beautiful and very well done. It seems to me that Sergio Mendes is a very talented musician and also a competent businessman that quickly understood the market to conquer mass audiences without loosing the quality of his music.

Sergio Mendes took a deep breath, expanded his sound to include strings lavishly arranged by the young Dave Grusin and Dick Hazard, went further into Brazil, and out came a gorgeous record of Brasil '66 at the peak of its form. Here Mendes released himself from any reliance upon Antonio Carlos Jobim and rounded up a wealth of truly great material from Brazilian fellow travelers: Gilberto Gil's jet-propelled "Roda" and Joao Donato's clever "The Frog," Dori Caymmi's stunningly beautiful "Like a Lover," Harold Lobo's carnival-esque "Tristeza," and Mendes himself (the haunting "So Many Stars" and the title track). Mendes was also hip enough to include "With a Little Help From My Friends" from the Beatles' Sgt. Pepper LP. As things evolved, though, the one track that this album would be remembered for is the only other non-Brazilian tune, Burt Bacharach's "The Look of Love," in an inventive, grandiose arrangement with a simplified bossa beat. The tune just laid there on the album until Mendes and company performed it on the Academy Awards telecast in 1968. The performance was a sonic disaster, but no matter; the public response was huge, a single was released, and it become a monster, number four on the pop charts. So much for the reported demise of bossa nova; in Sergio Mendes' assimilating, reshaping hands, allied with Herb Alpert's flawless production, it was still a gold mine.

Walter Wanderley - Moondreams (1969)

It is amazing this album has gone out of print, actually, I never heard about being re-issued on CD. This is one of the lastest albums recorded by Walter Wanderley and the second he made to A&M label under production of Creed Taylor. Such like the first A&M release, Walter Wanderley - When it Was Done, Moondreams has orchestra arrangements, something not common on Walter Wanderley records, mostly based on tight instrumental combos. Let's see how Loronixers feedback this release.

This is Walter Wanderley - Moondreams (1969), for A&M. The first track, Asa Branca and Baiao de Dois (Humberto Teixeira / Luiz Gonzaga), worth the entire album and it is one of the best versions of tune among the several I could hear before. There are lyrics and a choir featuring the well known to Loronixers Flora Purim with Linda November, Stella Stevens and Susan Manchester. Eumir Deodato was also at the set, delivering orchestral and vocal arrangements while Walter Wanderley was in charge of the remaining instruments. This cover is very beautiful and so far is the best among this framed CTI style that was used also at Samba Blim and We at the Sea of Tamba Trio. Tracks include:

Aracy de Almeida - Noel Rosa na Voz de Aracy de Almeida (1968)

Hello, Good Evening! Let's start today celebrating the 93rd anniversary of one of the most important Brazilian artists, important for making the foundation of what we know today as the modern Brazilian Music. By the time he was alive, the music from Brazil was mainly regional or "country" music, he made a revolution, creating Sambas with sophisticated harmonies, beautiful melodies and revolutionary lyrics, picturing social life of Rio de Janeiro, the people in the 30's. I'm talking about Noel Rosa.

Noel Rosa was so revolutionary that his music started to be acclaimed only ten years after his passing and as time passes he gets even more popular and recognized as a revolutionary artist. Noel Rosa said that Aracy de Almeida was her best interpreter and I want to say thanks to Moos for this contribution.

Os Cariocas - Os Cariocas (1963)

Caetano will think I'm crazy when we looking this post. A very strong post, but not planned. The reason of change you will know today with the closing post. Caetano should agree with the change and support this decision. Loronixers will stand at their offices, excited with today's last post. Don't sleep. Actually, I will cross the night with eyes opened.

Anyway, one of the most frequent questions made by new Loronixers is "What should I take first since I'm not used to Bossa Nova and Brazilian Music". This is a very hard question that I use to skip on answering. I think this album should address this answer very well, giving a chance to starters to get in touch and also amaze the grownups with another wonderful and very hard to find release powered by the great Caetano Rodrigues (reading my text you should realize how zeca is excited with the last post).

This is Os Cariocas - Os Cariocas (1963), for Columbia, a compilation of the early works of the renowned Brazilian vocal group Os Cariocas, featuring songs of the first LP, Os Cariocas - Os Cariocas a Ismael Neto (1958), A Bossa dos Cariocas, released at the same 1963 year and probably songs extracted from singles, EPs or early 78rpm. This cover artwork is also fantastic, showing a girl wearing a t-shirt with Copacabana mosaic under a black background, really unique. Tracks include:

Astrud Gilberto - Astrud Gilberto with Turrentine (1973)

The first to mention and call my attention to this album was The Jazzman and I remember we could not make it at that time due commercial availability. Then Caetano sent it on his last package and for my surprise it has gone out of print again. In spite of being almost unknown to Brazilian mass audience, Astrud Gilberto is famous worldwide and one of the most wanted artists at Loronix. I'm saving a great Astrud surprise for Loronix 1st Anniversary Celebration. Stay tuned.

This is Astrud Gilberto - Astrud Gilberto with Turrentine (1973), for Columbia, featuring the US sax player Stanley Turrentine. Very easy to describe and self-explanatory, Astrud Gilberto with Stanley Turrentine is a reunion of top-notch musicians lead by Eumir Deodato (piano, arrangements), such as: Sivuca, Dom Um Romao, Gene Bertoncini, Ron Carter, Toots Thielemans, among others. The repertoire mixes Brazilian and American songs and there are two instrumental tracks, To a Flame and Vera Cruz by Milton Nascimento and Fernando Brant. Tracks include:

Pery Ribeiro - Pery Ribeiro (1971)

I saw today at Bossa On-line from the mighty t_ito an album that I did not know the existence. I'm inviting Loronixers to check out there, it is an EP of a group called Trio Sam-Bossa, featuring Geraldo Cunha (guitar), Pery Ribeiro (flute) and Wilson Miranda (sax). It is not necessary to say that we are tracking down this EP and if someone can make it as a contribution, we will be really pleased. Trio Sam-Bossa reminds me Pery Ribeiro...

This is Pery Ribeiro - Pery Ribeiro (1971), for Odeon. Reviewers says that Pery Ribeiro discography has two phases, the Bossa Nova phase that ends with Encontro - Pery Ribeiro + Bossa 3 (1966) and the MPB phase starting with this album in 1971. I never knew why Pery Ribeiro made a hiatus of five years on recordings; anyway, this is the first Pery Ribeiro LP from this second phase at Loronix. Personnel is unknown with the exception of Maestro Lindolfo Gaya, credited as Musical Director at the back cover. Tracks include:

Os 7 Velhinhos - Bossa Nova

We spoke at Sao Paulo vinyl fair update post about the legendary Musidisc recording company. I cannot remember when or where, but I heard someone saying how great this label was and how many albums were released at Musidisc and the subsidiaries. This is another good example; take a look at this cover artwork, simply amazing for the early 60's, taking the idea of Copacabana sidewalk mosaic. Let's see what we have inside.

This is Os 7 Velhinhos - Bossa Nova (no date), for Musidisc. Except personnel, little is known about this LP, even the release date is missing. Bossa Nova (the album) can be easily please the fans of instrumental music and vocals, there are lyrics on tunes but the instrumental set and musicians, which includes maestros Formiga, Carioca and Nelsinho with Albel Ferreira, Jose Meneses, Chiquinho do Acordeon and others, is what I appreciate most at this release. Taiguara - Taiguara (1965) | Debut LP

Caetano never stops to amaze Loronixers, now he goes on a sought after collectors item, Taiguara debut LP for Philips, 1965. Everybody knows that zecalouro is a newbie to Taiguara music and Caetano is providing us a great start with this album. Reviewers say this record is one of the best Taiguara albums. Thanks Caetano for providing this unique opportunity.

This is Taiguara - Taiguara (1965), for Philips, celebrated with comments of Luiz Eca, Edu Lobo and Alaide Costa throughout the artwork. Luiz Chavez, Zimbo Trio bassist, is in charge of arrangements and conduction. I did not have the chance to check how Taiguara music evolved in the forthcoming years until his passing in 1996 and I'm sure if he kept the pace, youth and swing he delivers at this debut, later releases would be all great. The Bossa All Stars - The Girl from Ipanema (1975)

I spoke with Caetano to understand why this instrumental Bossa Nova album with a strong 60's flavor was released in 1975; a year that Brazilian popular music was dominated by MPB and the Bossa Nova hype was non-existent. Additionally I made researches to gather more information about the group "The Bossa All. Stars" and I failed. Let's see what we have here.

This is The Bossa All Stars - The Girl from Ipanema (1975), for Itamaraty. Caetano has an assumption, he says that this album was released in the 60's and reissued in 1975 by Itamaraty, which is a subsidiary of CID label. I think Caetano has the best guess so far; The Bossa All Stars is also a mystery. Perhaps someone hearing the album can give us some hints, based on each musician’s way of playing. Who knows? So far, you need to trust us this great music. If you are in the mood of listening a vivid instrumental set with Hammond B3 organ, brass and guitar, this is the right choice for you. Tracks include:

Hello, Good Evening! There is a great excitement around a vinyl fair in Sao Paulo scheduled for tomorrow. I will spread my wings and fly away there just to check with Caetano what is new. Actually, we will really check what is old, what is new does not apply to this business. It will be amazing to meet Loronixers, I will be with Caetano, so it will be easy to realize who is zeca, otherwise, look for a green guy, naked, 15cm tall and barefoot with four fingers, two in the front and two in the back. Orquestra Pan American - Star Dust (1959) with Os Cariocas

Here we go on another amazing Caetano Rodrigues contribution to Loronix. This is essentially an instrumental orchestra album with a choir using voice as and instrument. Taken this introduction and the cover artwork that alone worth the admission, I would be willing to check it out. However, the choir is the legendary Coral Oito Vozes, which is Os Cariocas, plus three Severino Araujo sisters and Odaléa.

This is Orquestra Pan American - Star Dust (1959), for Musidisc. Nilo Sergio - Musidisc owner - demonstrates once again that he was a little bit ahead of time, gathering Os Cariocas under the name of Orquestra Pan American to release this album. Musicians on the set are not credited but the eight voices choir worth to be listed apart, just before tracks. Tracks include:

Vinicius de Moraes, Maria Bethania & Toquinho - Vinicius + Bethania + Toquinho En La Fusa (1971)

Everyday I learn a new thing at Loronix and this week I learn something that might be obvious to everybody. I always though that La Fusa would be some Italian word, since Vinicius de Moraes and Toquinho made several tours and albums in Italy. Then Caetano comes to me to say that La Fusa is a nightclub in Buenos Aires. Several puzzle pieces now matches in my mind, the anthological album, Vinicius, Toquinho e Maria Creuza em La Fusa was recorded live and Buenos Aires, La Fusa nightclub. With this knowledge, I could research something that I did not know, presented here to Loronixers.

This is Vinicius de Moraes, Maria Bethania & Toquinho - Vinicius + Bethania + Toquinho En La Fusa (1971), for Trova (Argentina). Really amazing. If you were plenty with the Maria Creuza La Fusa, now it is time to check how Maria Bethania makes it in La Fusa with Vinicius de Moraes and Toquinho. I think the "Grabado en Buenos Aires" at the cover artwork is wrong, every single website I could research says that this album was recorded live in La Fusa nightclub, Mar del Plata at 25 and 26, February, 1971. You should take it for a hearing. Their performance is great. Tracks include:

Dick Farney - Dick Farney (1976)

Hello, Good Evening! Thanks for the response to Loronix survey reminder sent yesterday and to the automatic emails sent today for the friends who engage the survey, but did not reach the end. I want to make public an answer to a very common question made by email, Survey results will be made available at Loronix after survey ending keeping everybody's privacy. The results will be shown in terms of grand total percentages, such as: ratio between gender, styles, etc. I established a personal norm, to do not look at the results while survey is being carried out. I'm very curious about the outcome.

Let's start the day with an album requested by many Loronixers from an artist that gather many new fans since we start showing his music here.

This is Dick Farney - Dick Farney (1976), for Odeon. Several Dick Farney albums do not have a tile and people use to adopt nicknames to describe them, this one is also know as "the one with Dick Farney standing besides a pole", as you can check at cover artwork. Personnel is not available this time, but I'm quite sure Dick Farney Trio, which is Dick Farney (piano), Toninho (drums) and Saba (bass). A very discrete orchestra accompaniment is available on some tracks. This album has the original recording of Aeromoca (Billy Blanco), the song that made several Loronixers amazed on a Brazilian airline video. Tracks include:

Sergio Mendes - The Swinger from Rio (1965) featuring Antonio Carlos Jobim

Everybody knows that I'm not the best person in town to talk about a Sergio Mendes album, Caetano is my right choice and we have been talking about this one for more than a month. This is an early 1964 Sergio Mendes LP. I know the first Sergio Mendes album is Dance Moderno, which is available at Loronix, Find It should give you the answer. Before Dance Moderno, there was released two albums, this one and the one that I like most, Voce Ainda Nao Ouviu Nada with Sergio Mendes & Bossa Rio. I don't know what is the second one, but I'm sure this is my second favorite. Let's see why.

This is Sergio Mendes - The Swinger from Rio (1964), for Atlantic, later released in Brazil as Bossa Nova York, for Elenco. The Brazilian issue explains where Swinger from Rio was recorded, in the US, featuring Maestro Antonio Carlos Jobim among other five stars artists, such as: Tiao Neto, Phil Woods and others. Antonio Carlos Jobim plays violao throughout the album and the US Jazz guest on various songs. Personnel listing is like a puzzle this time, presented just before track list. Tracks include:
