Toboga is the name of this LP from Cesar Camargo Mariano combo Som Tres, but is also the name of the slope these Three guys are having fun. I do not know how common was the toboga outside Brazil in the 70's, but here it was real a mania.
Back to business, this is the last out of five LPs released by Som Tres, one of the best Bossa Nova Trios from the late 60's, lead by Cesar Camargo Mariano. This is a really late debut at Loronix and you should take this record and this group with a special attention. One of Brazil's top arrangers, producers, and pianists, César Camargo Mariano has had extensive work in the most important arenas of the world. He has had musicians like Abe Laboriel, Alex Acuña, Mitch Holder, Paulinho da Costa, Jerry Hey, Bill Rickenbach, Ernie Watts, Hélio Delmiro, Wagner Tiso, Nelson Ayres, Crispin DelCistia, Azael Rodrigues, João Parahyba, among many others, participating on his solo albums. Mariano also co-produced, arranged, played the piano, and/or did the artistic direction for several shows and albums of Brazil's most important contemporary artists like Elis Regina, Nana Caymmi, Gal Costa, Maria Betânia, Simone, Rita Lee, Elba Ramalho, Ney Matogrosso, João Bosco, Leny Andrade, Leila Pinheiro, Beth Carvalho, Emilio Santiago, Ivan Lins, Ivete Sangalo, and others. Among his many awards are the eight Clio's and several São Paulo's Association of Art Critics (APCA) awards as musician, composer, arranger, and producer of records and shows. Over the past two decades, Mariano has produced, directed, and headed various TV programs. Mariano also wrote soundtracks for films, plays, and prime time nationwide soap operas (like Mandala).
Mariano started playing the piano by ear at 13, never having studied music before. Nine months later he played with Melba Liston (June 1957) in her concert in Rio. In the '60s, Mariano was hired by the William Furneaux Orchestra, playing dances. He also formed a quartet at that time with Theo de Barros (bass), Flavio Abattipietro (trumpet), and José Luis Schiavo (drums). Invited by Simonetti, Mariano put together a larger group, Três Américas, to cover some of Simonetti's gigs. In the A Baiúca nightclub (São Paulo) in 1962, Mariano participated in the Sabá Quartet with Sabá Oliveira (bass), Hamilton Pitorre (drums), and Theo de Barros (guitar). In the same year, Mariano produced and arranged Claudete Soares' Claudete é Dona da Bossa. In 1963 Mariano recorded his first album, Quarteto Sabá. Together with Airto Moreira and Humberto Clayber, Mariano formed the Sambalanço Trio (1964). With the American choreographer, dancer, and singer Lennie Dale, Mariano staged a bossa nova show that was a success, yielding the album Lennie Dale & Sambalanço Trio No Zum-Zum, which received two prizes from the newspaper Jornal do Brasil. From 1965 to 1971, Mariano led the Som Três trio. In 1967, Mariano wrote 12 arrangements for singer Marisa Gata Mansa. In 1968, Mariano became Wilson Simonal's producer, arranger, and musical director. In 1969, Mariano participated in the Festival of Black Arts in Senegal, Africa, with the singer Elizeth Cardoso and the Som Três trio. In 1971, Mariano was invited by Elis Regina to direct, produce, and arrange her new show at the Teatro da Praia in Rio and her new album for PolyGram, Elis. He put together a new quartet with Luisão Maia (bass), Helio Delmiro (guitar), and Paulinho Braga (drums). This would be the first of a series of 13 albums with Elis Regina. Mariano's first instrumental solo work was the show São Paulo Brasil (1978). In 1980, Mariano wrote and recorded the soundtrack for Arnaldo Jabor's Eu Te Amo. Two years later he wrote the soundtrack for Bruno Barreto's Além da Paixão. In 1988, Mariano performed another instrumental music show with Dino Vicente (keyboards), Luisão Maia, and Pedro Ivo (bass), Azael Rodrigues and João Parahyba (percussion), Ulisses Rocha (guitar), and Pique Riverte (saxes and flute). The show, called Ponte das Estrelas, was recorded live and toured all over Brazil and Latin America. In 1989, at the Montreaux Jazz Festival, Mariano performed as a duet with João Bosco. Putting together an acoustic trio with Hélio Delmiro on guitar and Paulo Moura on clarinet, they traveled to Spain for a ten-concert tour. In 1990 Mariano composed the soundtrack for another film, Paixão Cigana (Flávia Moraes), and the score for the play Luar em Preto e Branco. In 1994, Mariano moved to the United States. In that year he met Sadao Watanabe, who invited him to produce and arrange Watanabe's album In Tempo. Sadao Watanabe would bring Mariano again to produce and arrange his album Viajando. In that first period, Mariano played a piano concert at the Blue Note club in New York and traveled to Japan for various appearances with Watanabe and his group. In Chile, Mariano performed a four-handed piano concert with Michel Petrucciani. He also participated in Armando Manzanero's album El Piano -- Manzanero y Sus Amigos. In New York in 1996, Mariano gave a solo concert at the Ballroom, along with John Patittucci's group. With Romero Lubambo (guitar), Leo Traversa (bass), and Mark Walker (drums), Mariano performed a tribute to Elis Regina at the Montreaux Jazz Festival with special guest Milton Nascimento. At the end of the year, Mariano directed a Brazilian music show at the Lincoln Center. In 1997, along with his quartet, he performed with Michael Brecker and Dianne Reeves at the Heineken Festival in São Paulo and Porto Alegre, Brazil. In Mexico, Mariano produced an album for PolyGram Latino with 12 Latin American singers (Tania Libertad, Vikky Car, Emmanuel, Maria Conchita Alonso, among others) backed only by piano and keyboards, Piano, Voz y Sentimento. In October, maestro and producer Ettore Stratta invited Mariano to join him in putting on the All Jobim concert at Carnegie Hall in New York. Acting as musical director and arranger for the concert, Mariano also performed alongside Ivan Lins, Leila Pinheiro, Dori Caymmi, Joe Lovano, Sharon Isbin, Eugene Maslov, and Al Jarreau. In April, invited by Ivan Lins, Mariano put together a duet program with Romero Lubambo on guitar for a series of concerts in the Brasil Musical (Musical Brasil) project in Rio de Janeiro. Followed another tour to Japan for various concerts alongside Sadao Watanabe, joined by Paulo Braga (drums), Marcelo Mariano (bass), Romero Lubambo (guitar), and Café (percussion). With guitar player Romero Lubambo, Mariano performed at Birdland in New York and at the Jazz Showcase in Chicago. In May 1999, invited by maestro Gil Jardim, Mariano participated in the Café Com Leite, a spectacle with the Brazilian Philharmonic Orchestra, followed by a a solo tour through Brazil. In September, Mariano was again invited by maestro Ettore Stratta to direct the All Jobim show at Carnegie Hall in New York. This time participants included João Bosco, James Ingram, Simone, Michael Brecker, the New York Voices, Paula Robinson, and the duo formed by Mariano and Romero Lubambo. In October and November, Mariano wrote the string arrangements for Blossom Dearie's album Blossom's Planet (Daffodil Records) and the arrangements for Romero Lubambo's album Love Dance (Aosis/JVC Japan).

Ithamara Koorax e Luiz Bonfa - Ithamara Koorax Sings the Luiz Bonfa Songbook (1996)
According with several discographies, this is the last Luiz Bonfa recording participation. This is a 1996 album, out of print and very recent to be available at Loronix. However, this is a really worthwhile album and as a Luiz Bonfa tribute we should also make our modest celebration to this great artist.
Ithamara Koorax pays her tribute to the genius recording this album on a interval of eleven months between Rio de Janeiro, Los Angeles and London. Several renowned guest were invited: Nelson Angelo (guitar), Shigeharu Sasago (guitar), Larry Coryell (guitar), Torcuato Mariano (guitar, keyboards), Eumir Deodato (keyboards), Paulo Malaguti (keyboards, percussion), Sadao Watanabe (alto sax), Jamil Joanes (bass), Ron Carter (bass), Carlos Bala (drums), Ivan Conti (drums), Sidinho Moreira (percussion), and Arnaldo DeSouteiro (percussion).
A truly wonderful tribute to Luiz Bonfa, released in Brazil as Almost in Love and internationally as Ithamara Koorax Sings the Luiz Bonfa Songbook. zecalouro includes AMG review for this album and track list.

If Antonio Carlos Jobim was the George Gershwin of Brazil, the prolific Luiz Bonfá is the Brazilian equivalent of Cole Porter or Irving Berlin. An expressive interpreter of lyrics - both English and Portuguese - Ithamara Koorax pays tribute to the Brazilian icon on Almost in Love: Ithamara Koorax Sings Luiz Bonfá (which percussionist/arranger Arnaldo DeSouteiro produced in 1995 and 1996). This Brazilian release wasn't the first time that a singer - Brazilian or otherwise - paid homage to Bonfá, and it won't be the last. But Almost in Love isn't a run-of-the-mill, dime-a-dozen tribute album. Whether she is singing in Portuguese or English, Koorax invests a great deal of emotion into these gems - emotionally, she really goes that extra mile. Portuguese, which is Koorax's is primary language, is the language she embraces on memorable interpretations of "Vida," "Correnteza," "Amor Sem Adeus," "Menina Flor," and "Perdido de Amor." However, Koorax is equally convincing when she sings in English on "The Gentle Rain," "Almost in Love," "Non-Stop to Brazil," and "Say Goodbye." Some Bonfá treasures have both Portuguese and English lyrics; two examples are the haunting "Manhã de Carnaval" and the charming "Samba de Orfeu," both from the 1959 Brazilian film The Black Orpheus. Koorax probably would have excelled on "Happy Samba" (the English-language version of "Samba de Orfeu") or "A Day in the Life of a Fool" (the English-language version of "Manhã de Carnaval"), but she chooses the Portuguese lyrics instead and gives first-rate performances. Although many of these songs are standards, Koorax also unearths some treasures that haven't been heard as often - "Empty Glass," for example, is a lesser-known ballad that was written for Peggy Lee in the '60s. From well-known standards to overlooked gems, this superb CD is among Koorax's finest accomplishments.

Helena de Lima - Helena de Lima e a Banda da Policia Militar do Estado da Guanabara (1967)
I was talking with a great friend about Brazilian instrumental music. He said that at the 78 rpm age, the military bands had a great importance, releasing several records and were of a great help on the popularization of musical instruments, such as brass and percussion.
Remembering this conversation, zecalouro presents Helena de Lima - a great Brazilian singer, active from the early 50's until the mid 70's - and a renowned Brazilian military band, Banda da Policia Militar do Estado da Guanabara, which is still active with the name of Companhia de Músicos da Policia Militar do Estado do Rio de Janeiro.

Welcome back to Loronix Mrs. Leny Andrade, now with Leny Andrade - Registro (1974), considered one of the best Leny's LPs dedicated to the genre where she makes her best: Samba Jazz.

Antonio Carlos & Jocafi - Mudei de Ideia (1971)
Antonio Carlos & Jocafi, nice Brazilian dudes who made a real noise in the 70's with several songs on top of the charts. I do not know who is Antonio Carlos and Jocafi at the picture, but if you were in Brazil in 1971 and 1972, you probably heard until get exausted their top hit, Voce Abusou, which is the opening track of their debut LP, Antonio Carlos & Jocafi - Mudei de Ideia (1971).
There are several crazy stories about this duet, I will tell you one: this song that never gets out of your head - Voce Abusou - got a tremendous success in France with the name of Fais comme l'oiseau and was adopted as the hmny by a French politica party. I cannot remember exactly which party, but the French composer who made the version did not give credits to Antonio Carlos & Jocafi. They went to court successfully against the French composer. Abel Ferreira e Seu Conjunto - Chorando Baixinho (1963)
Abel Ferreira, the legendary Brazilian Clarinetist, considered by many the major choro artist of all times. We have been in touch with the genre on several posts, but this is the first time a true choro LP is made available at Loronix. One of the most important names in the choro genre, Abel Ferreira had a noted career at the prestigious Rádio Nacional after playing in the orchestras of Vicente Paiva and Bené Nunes. At Rádio Nacional, he became widely known with the Turma do Sereno and the Escola de Danças. Between the '50s and the mid-'60s, he accumulated a good deal of international experience. Throughout that period, the choro genre showed a decrease of interest from audiences, but Ferreira managed to keep himself in good shape, ready to profit on the revival of choro in the '70s as one of the most important names. An excellent improviser, Ferreira had his best moments in recordings with the Cinco Companheiros (where he played with Pixinguinha, among others). His most successful compositions are the choros "Chorando Baixinho" and "Acariciando."
His musical studies began when he was around 12, on the clarinet. At 17, he moved to Belo Horizonte and included the alto and tenor saxes in his playing, starting to perform at Rádio Guarani. In 1935, he moved again, this time to São Paulo SP, where he joined the Maurício Cascapera Orchestra. He moved again to Uberaba MG, where he became the artistic director of a local radio station. In Poços de Caldas MG, he accompanied the sisters Aurora Miranda and Carmen Miranda in a show. Returning to Belo Horizonte, he played with J. França e sua Banda until 1937. In 1940, he performed in São Paulo SP, at the Rádio Tupi, playing later on the same outing with Pinheirinho e seu Regional. In 1941, he moved to Rio de Janeiro RJ, joining the Ferreira Filho e sua Orquestra, who used to play at the sophisticated Cassino da Urca. In the next year, he recorded his choro "Chorando Baixinho" and his valse "Vânia" for Columbia. In 1944, he recorded another version of his two first compositions with Claudionor Cruz e seu Regional. In 1945 and 1946 he played in the orchestras of Bené Nunes and Vicente Paiva. With these orchestras and his own group, formed in 1947, he accompanied the important singers of that period. In 1949, he was hired for Rádio Nacional as the leader of the Turma do Sereno, the name of the show (dedicated to an ancient repertory of modinhas, maxixes, valses, xotes, and polkas) and the group formed by virtuosi Irany Pinto (violin), João de Deus (flute), Sandoval Dias (clarone), Carlos Lentini, Rubem Bergman (violões, or acoustic guitars), and Waldemar de Melo (cavaquinho). In the same year, he played with the Rui Rei e sua Orquestra and recorded his choro "Acariciando" (with Lourival Faisal) for Todamérica. With Paulo Tapajós, he formed the Escola de Ritmos in 1952, who toured throughout Brazil. In 1954, he recorded the LP Jantar Dançante (Copacabana) and, in 1955, No Tempo do Cabaré. He toured Portugal in 1957, and in the following year, toured through several European countries and recorded the LP Os Brasileiros na Europa in the cultural mission that grouped himself alongside conductor Guio de Moraes, Sivuca, Trio Iraquitã, Dimas, and Pernambuco under the name Os Brasileiros. In 1960, he toured the U.S.A. with Bené Nunes, and, in the next year, toured Argentina with Waldir Azevedo. In 1964-1965, he toured Europe again, recording the album Abel Ferreira e Sua Turma. In 1968, he played in the then-U.S.S.R. and European countries. Another nice cover on a LP that zecalouro does not have any kind of information about it. Meet Os Sambacanas - Sucessos da Juventude em Tempo de Samba (1970). This is not only about the cover, it is also a good blend of Samba rhythms with - as they say - "modern" tunes by this unknow group with psycho ambitions. The repertoire mix Beatles, Brazilian an some other foreign songs.

Os Saxsambistas Brasileiros - Saxsambando (1960)
I'm in doubt if Os Saxsambistas Brasileiros is a Brazilian instrumental band or an orchestra, but it is a real musical task force. This LP, Saxsambando is their 1960 debut. I have no additional info about them, but they have released another three LPs that are really hard to find and are really appreciated among brass players and Brazilian music fans and collectors. This early Walter Wanderley - Sucessos Dancantes em Ritmo de Romance (1960) is very different from the mid and later works of this great Brazilian organist. This is the earliest Walter Wanderley solo LP that zecalouro made available at Loronix and it will be very nice to see how Walter Wanderley music has evolved since these first recordings to his well-known and celebrated production. This nice instrumental LP, Quarteto Arpoador - Bossa no Castelinho (1963) was on waiting list for a long time, since I could not find information about it. Yesterday, with the help of a friend, I could understand that this LP is a reissue of a well-known record from Helio Mendes e Seu Trio Vagalume - Na Bossa.
So, take this record as another LP from Helio Mendes, that you had the chance to get along on a previous post with the record Week-End in Rio. zecalouro really appreciates this cover that shows a photo from the Arpoador beach in Rio de Janeiro with those nice colored umbrellas from the 60's.
