Here we go on another Nova Historia da Musica Popular Brasileira album, a series that Loronixers always give good feedback. Loronix is not aiming to release the whole set of albums, but the ones that really worth our attention, such like this one, featuring this very important duo of Brazilian songwriters. Let's see.

This is Joao Bosco & Aldir Blanc - Nova Historia da Musica Popular Brasileira (1976), for Abril Cultural. Different from yesterday, where Sergio Ricardo performed all songs, we have special guests at this edition, Elis Regina, performing three tracks and Ademilde Fonseca. Actually, it is impossible to address Joao Bosco and Aldir Blanc without opening a full chapter for Elis Regina, she was certainly the most important interpreter of their compositions. The Pop's - Feliz Natal (1969)

Hello, good evening! We are not in December yet, but for zecalouro today is Christmas. My mother had a serious broken harm a couple of weeks ago, very serious; it was that kind of broke where the bone goes outside the body. She went to surgery to put pieces of metal and today she took out those rigid parts to sustain the metal and the doctor said that everything is all right. That's amazing! Better celebrate this anticipated Christmas with one of Mom's finding. Let's see.

This is The Pop's - Feliz Natal (1969), for Equipe, featuring instrumental rock renditions of Brazilian and international well-known Christmas songs. Very dancing and tiny session with only 26 minutes running time. Baden Powell - Samba Triste (1989)

I think AdHoc will be taken by surprise with this post that has several elements of his contributions. This CD was issued in France, 1989, and nowadays is a very hard to find album, since it never had a reissue since them. I'm really glad to make this album available, the last Baden Powell career album at Loronix was made available in the beginning of July by one of those fantastic contributions by Caetano Rodrigues, a five months hiatus. I think Loronixers will be pleased with this one. Let's see.

This is Baden Powell - Samba Triste (1989), for Accord, featuring two Baden Powell records in one, Samba Triste Vol. 5 (1975) and Tristeza (1976). I can't make better than Brazil-on-Guitar, which is the best-known resource to Baden Powell music. I'm taking BOG reviews on Samba Triste Vol. 5 and Tristeza to guarantee a flawless Baden Powell release at Loronix. Do not miss Brazil-on-Guitar at http://brazil-on-guitar.de.

BOG Samba Triste Vol. 5 (1975) review:

"BrazilOnGuitar says: Samba Triste is a cleanly produced studio record. We believe that it was recorded after the 1974 tour in the beginning of 1975 as Pedro Santos and Joaquim Paes Henriques (his drummer on tour and in the studio during the last years) do not play on this record. On the following Festival records Jean Arpino took over the drums.

Most likely, 1975 at the studio in the Normandy there were recorded three albums within five days: Samba Triste, Melancolie and Tristeza 1976. These recordings were the last with Janine de Waleyne, Guy Pedersen, his preferred musicians of the last years.

On the record of Samba Triste is written Vol.5 next to the title. This should probably put this record in context with the other four Festival albums, as Baden Powell had wanted to record five instead of four albums. However the style of this record belongs to another phase of his musical development.

We think that at least one track is a outtake from another recording session: Casa Velha (Apaixonado). Further BP did rename two compositions: Alo Ernesto became Valse No.1 and Babel later became Samba Novo.

1989 Samba Triste was released on CD, together with Tristeza 1976. Nowadays this is a rarity as it has never been re-released."

BOG Tristeza (1976) review:

"We think that the 1976 record Tristeza, compared with Samba Triste and Melancolie that were produced at the same time, is the most interesting one. Except for two tracks, A Primeira Vez and Na Baixa Do Sapateiro, BP is accompanying himself on guitar, more often than on any other record. It can only be guessed whether the title Tristeza 1976 is a reference to the 1966 Tristeza on Guitar.

Unusual is the slower version of Canto de Ossanha, which like the other songs on the record belongs to the faster part of the live repertoire of these years. BP's Version of A Primeira Vez is anticipating his later singing and playing style.Na Baixa Do Sapateiro comes in his usual masterly effortlessness, that is always surprising. Also on this record are musicality and imaginativeness more important than mere technical virtuosity.

The studio recordings Tristeza 1976 and Samba Triste show style and experience of the live repertoire of the mid-70ies with and around the bass player Guy Pederson. These recordings were the last studio recordings with Guy, his preferred musician of the last years, between 1972-1975.

1989 Tristeza 1976 was released on CD, together with Samba Triste, except for the track So Danco Samba. Nowadays this is a rarity as it has never been re-released with the original cover."

Os Cariocas - O Melhor de Os Cariocas (1989)

Hello, good evening! We were informed by cvllos that Jedir Pimentel has passed today. Jedir Pimentel had a major participation on bringing Os Cariocas together on a recording studio after an hiatus of 24 years, started with their last release for Philips in 1966, until the first after many years, in 1990 for Som Livre, Minha Namorada. This is Loronix tribute for Jedir Pimental and his passion to Os Cariocas and Brazilian music.

This is Os Cariocas - O Melhor de Os Cariocas (1989), for Philips, featuring "the best of" Os Cariocas on their Philips years, four albums, being the first released at 1963, and the last in 1965. For reasons that I could not check, O Melhor de Os Cariocas does not includes their last Philips release, Arte / Vozes (1966). Anyway, if those albums are fantastic alone, a compilation with remastered songs taken from them should be really worth checking. Tracks include:

Ivan Lins - Juntos (1984)

I remember this album as a blockbuster in the year of 1984 with every record store showing several copies available. Every friend's place had a copy and perhaps nobody will take much attention on this release. In 1984, I had less than 20 years on earth and I was at the peak of my infatuation with rock'n'roll, being more concerned with the next Yes album instead of what was happening in Brazilian popular music, with some exceptions. So, I did not take much attention to this album. I spoke with Caetano Rodrigues a couple of weeks ago and he said this one would be a strike at Loronix. Once again, Caetano was right, this album is really important, in Brazil and also overseas, being responsible for the first step of many friends towards the music from Brazil. Let's see.

This is Ivan Lins - Juntos (1984), for Philips, with all songs, lyrics and music by Ivan Lins and Victor Martins, produced by Gilson Peranzzetta. Juntos is a mega production featuring several artists. Ivan Lins took the best of his repertoire and invited several artists as special guests on each track. I think this is the strength of Juntos, thirteen songs that you already know by heart and thirteen renowned artists, including George Benson and Patti Austin as international guests. Recorded in the 80's, Juntos brings some electronic percussion and a lot of keyboards, but the session is so well produced that your listening pleasure is guaranteed. Tracks include:

Sergio Ricardo - Historia da Musica Popular Brasileira (1971)

Loronixers always give a great response to these short 10-inch albums from both 1971 and 1978 editions of Historia da Musica Popular Brasileira from Abril Cultural. I follow a simple criterion to release these albums, relevant artists with less than a few records available at Loronix. Sergio Ricardo is an example. Let's see.

Luiz Arruda Paes e Sua Orquestra - Brasil Moreno (1960)

Hello, good evening! Here we go on another album by one of the Brazilian maestros that I like most, Luiz Arruda Paes. Before creating Loronix, the only album I knew was the acclaimed Brasil Dia e Noite, by the way, the only Luiz Arruda Paes record that had a CD reissue. Since them, with the great help of Caetano Rodrigues and some finds on old vinyl shops, we have been gradually filling up most of his discography. I think this one is pretty unknown to everybody, keeping the quality of every Luiz Arruda Paes release. Let's see.

This is Luiz Arruda Paes e Sua Orquestra - Brasil Moreno (1960), for Odeon. Brasil Moreno is based on a theme, which is the Brazilian Mulata, such as this beautiful girl at the front cover. Ary Barroso is also very well represented via the first and title track Brasil Moreno and also 07 - Faceira and 12 - No Tabuleiro da Baiana. It has been a lot of time since we released an orchestra album at Loronix and I think Luiz Arruda Paes is a great pick to get back to the style. Tracks include:

Hello, good evening! Let's start this rainy day with a flawless album, the repost of Dorival Caymmi - Sambas de Caymmi (1955), kindly provided by Dona Iara. Surprisingly, this one was not mint as the previous one and it is necessary to say that you will hear eventual clicks and pops. Let's see.

This is Dorival Caymmi - Sambas de Caymmi (1955), for Odeon, with arrangements, orchestra and choir by Luiz Arruda Paes. Released in the 10-inch format, Sambas de Caymmi is Dorival Caymmi second LP, preceding the one that I like most, Dorival Caymmi - Cancoes Praieiras (1954), already available at Loronix and scheduled for a repost as soon as we get the original vinyl issue. Dorival Caymmi performs for the first time some of his essential songs, such as Sabado em Copacabana, Nunca Mais, So Louco, Vizinha do Lado, Rosa Morena, in fact, all these 8 songs are Brazilian popular music standards and you cannot miss them performed by Dorival Caymmi in 1955. Salsa - Um (2004)

Meet Salsa, musician, sax player, from Espirito Santo state, Vioria city. It was really wise of him to introduce his music to Loronixers and I'm very proud with this responsibility. Salsa recorded this Jazz album less than four years ago with a very limited edition of 1,000 copies. Salsa was invited by Reinaldo Santos Neves to record a Jazz CD with rendition of popular music from Espirito Santo state folklore, collected by Reinaldo's father that made researches on this music from decades. The result is really interesting, a work of passion with attention on each aspect of the project, sponsored by Lei Rubem Braga. Thanks Salsa for providing to Loronixers your amazing music. This is Salsa - Um (2004), with jazzy renditions of Espirito Santo folklore music, arrangements by Fabiano Araujo and Wanderson Lopes with the sax of Salsa, backed up by excellent "capichaba" musicians, which is the way we use to call the friends from Espirito Santo. Cartola - Nova Historia da Musica Popular Brasileira (1977)

Cartola is a very important Brazilian artist, with compositions recorded by all acknoledged Brazilian performers. Cartola was simple, authentic and never act if was an artist, perhaps the reason for leaving only spare recordings. The last Leo Ribeiro Forma & Elenco Radio show was a special Cartola edition. I invite you to check Radio Forma & Elenco website, owned and maintained by Martoni, from the Netherlands. There you can download past Forma & Elenco editions and also the last one featuring Cartola. We have only two Cartola albums available at Loronix and they were released a long time ago. Let's see.

This is Cartola - Nova Historia da Musica Popular Brasileira (1978), for Abril Cultural, featuring eight Cartola compositions performed by Cartola and selected artists, such like: Paulinho da Viola, Nara Leao, Gal Costa, among others. Don't let the first track Divina Dama, performed by Francisco Alves cheats you. This track was taken from a very old 78 rpm and it seems the folks at Abril Cultural did not make a necessary remastering, but the remaining tracks are clean and beautiful. I recommend. Elizeth Cardoso - Momento de Amor (1968)

This album is so far the greatest contribution by Dona Iara, delivering an Elizeth Cardoso album that I never had the chance to hear. By default, this record was clean as taken from Copacabana factory yesterday; I will not resist asking Dona Iara how she kept these records for decades with perfect condition. I feel very proud to receive her albums, this one is not so easy to find and is a really top Elizeth Cardoso LP. Let's see.

This is Elizeth Cardoso - Momento de Amor (1968), for Copacabana, produced by Rubens Barsotti (Zimbo Trio) and arranged by Luiz Chaves (Zimbo Trio) and Cyro Pereira. The back cover brings a liner notes written by Sergio Porto that explains everything about this album. Sergio Porto says this record is the first after a series of Elizeth Cardoso Samba LPs produced by Moacyr Silva and Momento de Amor represents a shift, bringing a repertoire of Samba Cancao with a very sweet and intimate interpretation of Elizeth Cardoso. Momento de Amor jumps at a top position on my shortlist of best albums by the Divina. Tracks include:

Varios Artistas - Ritmos Brasileiros (1967)

I cannot resist showing these promotional albums released by companies and when they comes with pictures of Rio de Janeiro it is quite impossible to ignore. This is the left wing of Copacabana, including the place where I live today at the end of the beach, a very nice place called Leme. Here we have a hard to see perspective of Copacabana, most of photos are taken from the opposite side, on top of the hill that closes the beach known as Pedra do Leme.

This is Copacabana in 1967 and the changes are many. The most important is the worse aggression to this landscape, we don't see at this picture a skyscraper called Meridian, a big building that serve as a hotel. I don't know how this building was allowed; it is so big that makes a stupid square shadow at the beach. Another obvious change is Av. Atlantica before the construction of the second avenue. Not all the changes were bad; at the hill in your left you see a small road going down to Copacabana. Today, that area is protected by authorities and a beautiful piece of Mata Atlantica rainforest is there, nice measure. Anyway, my apologies for this out topic Copacabana thing. This album has some differences and it is above the average in the style. Let's see.

This is Ritmos Brasileiros (1967), for Philips to a marketing campaign of a financial institution called Credence, given to participants of the 22th International Monetary Fund Congress, held in 1967 in Rio de Janeiro. Instead of selecting a Maestro, orchestra and a repertoire of standards, the folks of Credence selected cuts of very nice artists such like Baden Powell, Sergio Mendes e Bossa Rio, Walter Wanderley, Corisco e Os Sambaloucos and others. Hello, good evening! I'm surprised with Veu de Noiva Brazilian soap opera OST released two days ago. Until now, it is the most downloaded of the weekend, leaving classic albums by renowned artists behind. This is the reason for showing Loronixers another OST, produced by the same people in charge of Veu de Noiva, released in 1970 and kindly provided with exceptional quality by the already legendary Dona Iara. Let's see.

This is Verao Vermelho (1970), for Philips, the original sound track of TV Globo Verao Vermelho soap opera. Directed by Nelson Motta and featuring almost the same performers of Veu de Noiva, such as Luiz Eca, Regininha, Roberto Menescal, Wilson das Neves and Elis Regina. Tracks include:

Dolores Duran - Dolores Duran (1979)

Dolores Duran was such like a meteor, born in 1930; she started singing at the age of five, performing at popular parties in Rio de Janeiro. At the age of 10, Dolores Duran started his professional career at Ary Barroso's Calouros em Desfile Radio show. Two years later, with the passing of her father, Dolores started singing on the radio and musical shows using false identities to deceive the authorities.

From this fast start to the release of her first album, Dolores developed her talent as composer, something that would be recognized only after her passing. Dolores Duran left several compositions that became Brazilian popular music standards, including more than a few with Antonio Carlos Jobim.

I started this writing saying that Dolores Duran was such like a meteor, unfortunately, she died very early at the age of 29 from a heart attack after performing at Little Club nightclub. This is the first Dolores Duran album released at Loronix after more than a year hiatus and I think it is a very special post. Let's see.

This is Dolores Duran - Dolores Duran (1979), for Copacabana, as part of Copacabana label 30th anniversary. This beautiful tribute album features Dolores Duran recordings for Copacabana in the 50's, with new orchestra arrangements by Maestro Elcio Alvares on top of remastered original Dolores Duran recordings from 78rpms. The output is a Dolores Duran original singing, with new orchestral arrangements and the benefits of the modern recording technologies. I'm making available two LPs as a single album, 23 tracks and 65 minutes running time. Tracks 01 to 11 belongs to the first LP and 12 to 23 to the second one. Copacabana did not credit musicians in the set. Tracks include:

Paulinho da Viola - Sinal Fechado (1969) EP

My turntable has a serious problem with singles and EPs. Even when playing clean albums, the cartridge jumps and I had no choice except turn it of and try to understand what happens. This one was sent by Dona Iara and for my surprise it works very well and the output was so good that it was not necessary to apply noise reduction software. Perhaps my turntable is a big Paulinho da Viola fan, such like me. Let's see.

This is Paulinho da Viola - Sinal Fechado (1969) EP, for Odeon, featuring the awesome title track 01 - Sinal Fechado with other three cuts, including the blockbuster 02 - Foi um Rio que Passou em Minha Vida, a well-known Paulinho da Viola composition. I did not search for the availability of these songs on regular Paulinho da Viola albums. Tracks include:
