Challenge | Who are They?

Hello, good evening! Let’s do the Challenge (oops!), now with a great photo featuring several musicians (one is from the US). Who can tell me who are they? What album they are recording together? And what is the name of the group? The second friend from the left to right is not a musician, but the producer. A hi-res version is available here.

Hope uEnjoy!

Os Borges - Os Borges (1980)

Hello, good evening! Let’s close this great week with a required repost, first made available in January 2007, having a successful reception by the community and now being updated with a new transfer taken from my own vinyl, including also hi-res scans and the new FLAC option. Let’s see.

This is Os Borges – Os Borges (1980), for Odeon, featuring the Borges family and some very special guests. Os Borges are a musical family from Minas Gerais state, consisting of the brothers Nico Borges, Telo Borges, Marilton Borges, Márcio Borges, Yê Borges, Lô Borges and Solange Borges, the father and mother Salomao Borges and Dona Maricota Borges. The very special guests are Toninho Horta, Elis Regina, Gonzaguinha, Milton Nascimento and Lucio Alves. The cover shows Os Borges room with instruments all around the floor with a picture of The White Album from The Beatles, strong influence to the Borges brothers and Clube da Esquina movement from Minas Gerais. By the way, if love the Clube da Esquina album with Milton Nascimento and Lo Borges, you should consider this one. Personnel listing was not made available by Odeon, but the session photos brings some musicians in the session, such like, Marcal, Nivaldo Ornellas, Cesar Camargo Mariano, Paulinho Carvalho, Helvius Vilela, Nana Vasconcellos, Guilherme Arantes, among others. Tracks Includes:

Elis Regina - Me Deixa em Paz (1972)

There’s a lot to know about Brazilian music and a whole life is not enough to know everything. In my case, I have some important knowledge gaps, such as the vast discography of Elis Regina, considered Loronixer’s friends on a poll made two years ago, the best Brazilian diva ever. Little I know about Elis Regina discography and it is obvious that I don’t have any kind of information about this obscure album released in Portugal. Anyway, Elis Regina is a great singer and it has been a long time we don’t make one of her many albums. Let’s see.

This is Elis Regina – Me Deixa em Paz (1972), for Pergola (Portugal), with arrangements and piano by Cesar Camargo Mariano. And this is all I know about this album, which is probably a compilation, a solid listen from the start to end. The front cover says Me Deixa em Paz is a special edition made to the members of a clube de leitura (reading club). I would like to be a member of this club; it was very hard to select the featured track at Loronix Preview Center. I had to decide a single track among several classics, such like Aguas de Marco, Atras da Porta, Nada Sera como Antes, Casa no Campo, Cais, but my decision was the title track, Me Deixa em Paz (Ivan Lins / Ronaldo Monteiro de Souza). Bola Sete e Seu Conjunto - Aqui Esta o Bola Sete (1957)

Hello, good evening! I bought a new scanner; actually, the community bought it via donations to Paypal and the Brazilian alternative Pagseguro. I made some calculations; each album required eight scans, four passes on each side. Perhaps the old scanner did the job nicely, the load was huge, it was almost 4,000 (four thousand) scan in approximately 15 months. Anyway, the bottom-line is that nothing is stopping me now. And to celebrate, it is time to present another nice contribution made by Jorge Mello, featuring a legendary Brazilian musician. Let’s see.

This is Bola Sete e Seu Conjunto – Aqui Esta o Bola Sete (1957), for Odeon, which is Bola Sete debut LP in the Para Dancar style. With the help of Jorge Mello, we are gradually completing Bola Sete discography in his early yearly years. And there is more to come since all these albums never had a chance to be reissued in CD. Bola Sete plays electric guitar renditions of Brazilian standards, Bolero and two compositions by his own. Odeon did not credit musicians in this session. Tracks include:

01 - Aquarela do Brasil (Ary Barroso)
02 - Rico Vacilon (Rosendo Ruiz)
03 - Copacabana (João de Barro / Alberto Ribeiro)
04 - Na Baixa do Sapateiro (Ary Barroso)
05 - Solamente Una Vez (Agustin Lara)
06 - Morena Boca de Ouro (Ary Barroso)
07 - Baccará (Bola Sete)
08 - Molambo (Jaime Florence "Meira" / Augusto Mesquita)
09 - No Rancho Fundo (Ary Barroso / Lamartine Babo)
10 - Remexendo (Radamés Gnattali)
11 - Czardas (V. Monti)
12 - Por Um Amor (Bola Sete)

Carolina Cardoso de Menezes e Orlando Silveira - Honeymoon in Rio (1956)

I never imagined that a request made more than a year ago is now addressed by Loronix community after all this time, especially this album, a really hard to find record, never released in Brazil. We need to send Kudos to our friend Eric and his nice work on preparing hi-res scan covers from front and back, making also the transfer on WAV, enabling the creation of FLAC files that are growing fast in popularity after Happy Hour creation. I think it is time to publish my complete wish-list somewhere. Let’s see.

This is Carolina Cardoso de Menezes e Orlando Silveira – Honeymoon in Rio (1956), for Capitol (USA), never released in Brazil, featuring the piano of Carolina Cardoso de Menezes and the accordion of Maestro Orlando Silveira, delivering Samba and Baiao, funny translated by Capitol as “Baions”. I would like to show you the delicious liner notes written by Capital, with the whole atmosphere of this record. Tracks include:

…Romantic Rio offers that “certain” extra in its scenic attractions… and in its highly personalized music… SAMBA, anyone?

Brazil in 1956 underwent a tremendous change with a new president, new plans for expansion and economic improvements, a new census listing the, population at 58 million and a new customs ruling which allows North Americans to visit the magic country without a visa.

Rio itself is about the size of Philadelphia and is the second largest city in South America-Buenos Aires is larger. Its hotels are superb, its restaurants first rate, its night life gay and expensive. Horse racing is popular, as is soccer, boxing, tennis and polo. Bullfighting, however, is not allowed. There are good theaters, and taxis (distinguished by special red license plates) are easily available for a few cruzeiros (it takes 50 to make a U.S.A. dollar). Brazilian food and wines are excellent, and scenery like Copacabana Beach with its sleek hotels and curving sidewalks of gorgeous hand-set mosaics, and mighty Sugar Loaf and Corcovado mountains, are as attractive as anything you could desire.

The samba and the baion characterize Brazil-and Rio-as well as any of the country's native contributions to art. Orlando Silveira plays the true baions and pretty Carolina Cardoso de Meneses the authentic sambas in this album, recorded for Capitol in Rio with the romanticists in mind.

Make no mistake, Rio is romantic. Its music is proof.

Track List

01 – Baiao (Orlando Silveira)
02 – Na Pavuna (Carolina Cardoso de Menezes)
03 – Cabeça Inchada (Orlando Silveira)
04 – Me Leva Seu Rafael (Carolina Cardoso de Menezes
05 – Paraiba (Orlando Silveira)
06 – Cabelos Brancos (Carolina Cardoso de Menezes)
07 – Baiao da Guarda (Orlando Silveira)
08 – Atire a Primeira Pedra (Carolina Cardoso de Menezes)
09 – Que nem Jilo (Orlando Silveira)
10 – Com que Roupa (Carolina Cardoso de Menezes)
11 – Asa Branca (Orlando Silveira)
12 – E Com Esse que Eu Vou (Carolina Cardoso de Menezes)

Dorival Caymmi - Caymmi (1985)

I received couple of messages with congratulations to Loronix tribute to Dorival Caymmi. However, I was not comfortable by missing the chance to introduce and remember Dorival Caymmi with music. I woke up this morning with a non schedule Mom’s visit and this album, by the way, a double album featuring Dorival Caymmi on the first LP with his violao and Dorival Caymmi at the second LP with Radames Gnattali. My mother ran to a store on Saturday, getting this one for our tribute. You should thank her for the initiative.

It is important to mention a strange coincidence here, which is the photo used yesterday on the tribute and the speeches of Antonio Carlos Jobim, Jorge Amado, Caetano Veloso and Carybe available at the first LP. Unfortunately, my scanner stills defective, delivering white stripes. I hope I can manage a new one tomorrow and update this post with this really amazing album. Let’s see.

This is Dorival Caymmi – Caymmi (1985), recorded by Fundacao Emilio Odebrecht to celebrate Dorival Caymmi 70th anniversary in 1985. This is not a commercial album, distributed only to Fundacao Emilio Odebrecht customers. Caymmi is 100% made of new recordings with Dorival Caymmi and his violao on the first LP and Dorival Caymmi with Maestro Radames Gnattali on the second LP. I’m confident this is what we need to make the best possible tribute to the Master.

God Bless Dorival Caymmi. Tracks include:

Dorival Caymmi

ANTONIO CARLOS JOBIM

I met Dorival Caymmi way back in 48, 49. I was very eager, I wanted to be a musician no matter what, and tried to get acquainted with him; afterwards we became good friends. Dorival Caymmi is a genius, a person of such talent that if I think of Brazilian music I'll always think of Dorival Caymmi. He is an incredibly sensitive person, has a tremendous creativeness, and I say this from a musical viewpoint, without speaking about the poet and the painter. Because the painter... I have one of his paintings. I gave his son a flute and he gave me a painting of his, that is marvelous. The other day I asked Danilo Caymmi: Tell me, how can your father paint so well? He said: He studied. It's something! Because Dorival is really a great painter, it's not just for fun, no; and in his songs then he's the tops.

JORGE AMADO

Caymmi represents one of the peak moments of Brazilian creation and particularly Bahia's creation. That is, the most profound poetry of life in Bahia, of people from Bahia. Caymmi is a flower horn up above, that blooms out of this whole toiled land, from popular culture, fertilized with sweat, with blood; no, with dreams, with hope, and all the difficulties a man can possibly encounter; all the magic, and which suddenly produces a flower of culture, a splendid thing, unique, radiant, which is the work of Caymmi, this extraordinary poet.

CAETANO VELOSO

Caymmi is too easy and for this very reason it is rather difficult to speak about Caymmi. Because he is an absolute passion, and the love I have for him and that I can conceive it is possible to have for him, is absolute too, with no limitations, it's a thing of unlimited beauty; it is not, and at the same time it is, a very simple thing. He is a composer who is not too, how do they say it, prolix; he doesn't have too many songs, he has a large number of songs, but relatively few when compared to other composers. But each of his songs is a jewel, so perfect, and all his aura is an aura nearly of a very profound wisdom, which he seems to have had always. It is something! it just happened that there exists such a man, isn't that true? João Gilberto always says that Caymmi is the real genius of the race. João Gilberto tells that he learned everything from Caymmi and that we should always be learning from Caymmi. "Learn everything from him...", João Gilberto says about Caymmi. You see, it is funny... because we are three generations: Caymmi, João Gilberto and I, and João Gilberto says this to me, to me and to all colleagues of my generation, to my friends. And João Gilberto was the immediate master of my generation, because we are a generation that began with an admiration, an admiration for bossa nova, isn't it?... And it was bossa nova that formed us, and João Gilberto was the nucleus, the core of bossa nova, and he always regarded Caymmi as the utmost example of how an artist ought to be and how a man ought to be.

CARYBE

Então ele vai levando a vida assim...

O Axe de Opó-Afojá, MãeSenhora's Candomblé, united three persons who are today three worshipbrothers. One is Obá Onikoí, another is Obá Olorum and the other Obá Onoxokum. In Portuguese they would be Dorival Caymmi, Jorge Amado and Carybé. And so we are united by bonds that are secret and mysterious... Now, in everyday life, I think he is fabulous. But he has one thing against him, he cannot do things on account of his lazyness, because lazyness is his big enemy, or friend; I guess it must be a friend, more than an enemy, because no doubt lazyness is something delightful, isn't it? With chigoe, if you have it, better still. He stays there in that faraway Rio das Ostras, eating oysters, stringing his guitar, polishing blunderbusses, daggers, collecting canes... And so he takes life easy... He hangs around, paints a picture or so, all of them good by the way, with the exception of my portrait, because my portrait is the real "Portrait of Dorian Gray", which he goes back to every two years, three years, one year and a half... and I change. All of a sudden lam younger, then he makes me a decrepit old man... Yeah, that's what I had to say...
