Hello, Good Evening! Saturday is Samba at Loronix and I have no doubt we are starting great with this compacto duplo (EP), featuring a acclaimed Samba group from the 70's that delivers Samba in a way I think it should be. This should amaze our Samba enthusiasts. Let's see.
This is O Conjunto Nosso Samba - Samba '73 (1972), for Copacabana. I never heard anything from these guys before and I like it very much. They make Samba just like the Escolas de Samba from the old times, slower than today and groovy. Attention to track 03 - Tem Capoeira, a very popular Samba tune from the old times. Tracks include:
01 - Tra-La-La, Lamartine Babo, Um Hino ao Carnaval Brasileiro (Darcy do Nascimento / Oliviel de Oliveira)
02 - O Saber Poetico da Literatura de Cordel (Baianinho)
03 - Tem Capoeira (Batista da Mangueira)
04 - Viagem Encantada Pindorama a Dentro (Wilson Diabo / Malaquias)

Sonia Santos - Crioula (1977)
Here we go on a perfect album to make people ready to the solid Samba listens scheduled for Saturday night. We have here a pretty unknown singer with many fans; actually, I never understood why so many fans and such fanatic fans she has. Now I know the reason, she is truly great. Sonia Santos recorded only two albums in the late 70's and I cannot understand why she did not made much. You should agree when you listen to this album.
This is Sonia Santos - Crioula (1977), for Som Livre, the second career album of this soulful Brazilian Samba interpreter, produced and arranged by Edson Frederico and featuring a solid group of musicians in the set, such like Edson Frederico, Neco, Luiz Claudio, Chico Batera, Jacques Morellenbaum, Marcio Montarroyos, Claudio Roditi, Altamiro Carrilho, Aurino, Jorginho, Ze Bodega, among others. I'm always very caution to do not express a great enthusiasm on albums I show to Loronixers, so I will let you with personnel listing that explains much of the entertainment you will have with Crioula. Tracks include:
Track List
01 - A Lavadeira (Eros / Jon Lemos / Correia)
02 - Quando Nasce o Filho de Um Sambista (Paulinho da Viola)
03 - A Polícia Bateu (Metalói)
04 - O Bom Malandro (Paulo Faria)

Maestro Carioca & Orquestra Popular da Guanabara - Rio (1968)
Some friends will think or say: "here comes zecalouro with another of those promotional albums for tourists in Rio de Janeiro...". No problem, I would make only this cover that worth the entire experience with this antique. That's why I'm making something different this time; I'm including a high-resolution copy of cover artwork with no Rapidshare. Let's see.
This is Orquestra Popular da Guanabara - Rio (1968), for Premier, same concept used in the previous release of this kind, issued for promote tourism activities, musicians not credited, nice cover artwork picturing well-known spots in Rio de Janeiro and a repertoire full of standards. However, there is an exception, this album features an orchestra lead by Maestro Carioca, Orquestra Popular da Guanabara and the repertoire is a wonderful selection of songs with lyrics about Rio de Janeiro. Tracks include:
01 - Cidade Maravilhosa (Andre Filho)
02 - Copacabana (Joao de Barro / Alberto Ribeiro)

Jacob do Bandolim & Radames Gnattali - Retratos (1964)
Hello, Good Evening! I'm feeling good today, perhaps by hearing another fantastic collaboration by Old Nic. This is an album that I never had the chance to hear or look its cover, in the spirit of he album title, showing a well-known character in Brazil popular known as "Lambe-Lambe", which is a photographer that holds his equipment on streets making photos of people. They have disappeared with the creation of these automatic photo machines. They were very common in Rio de Janeiro, but I think they were gone a decade or two ago.
This is Jacob do Bandolim & Radames Gnattali - Retratos (1964), for Columbia, featuring Jacob do Bandolim on tracks 01, 02, 03 and 04 backed up by Radames Gnattali and his Orchestra performing Retratos Suite. Radames Gnattali playing piano with no additional accompaniement performs the remaining tracks. Jacob do Bandolim and Radames Gnattali alone makes this album worth checking. Tracks include:

Fernando Lona - Cidadao do Mundo (1977)
I took this album for a hearing today with zeca and I got really amazed. I had to take zeca out of the room to make a focused hearing, it is not everyday you get hooked by something at the first time. Later I knew this is the first and only album by this artist, which is also a composer, director and actor. He is the author of Porta Estandarte (Geraldo Vandre / Fernando Lona), an anthological song that won the first prize at Festival Nacional de Musica Popular by TV Excelsior.
This is Fernando Lona - Cidadao do Mundo (1977), for Tapecar, featuring arrangements by Leo Peracchi and compositions by Fernando Lona. Cidadao do Mundo is listed among the one hundred essential Brazilian music albums listing, developed by the renowned Brazilian music researcher, Luiz Americo. You can visit Luiz Americo site to browse his listing of his one hundred essential albums here. I think everything was said; just want to thanks Refer, pimenta and Carlos Braga for additional info on Fernando Lona. Tracks include:

03 - Três Três (Fernando Lona)

Claudette Soares - Claudette Soares | EP (1971)
Singles and EPs, which I think I will call as Compactos from now one, are really cool. My decision was to make them in the weekends, but I cannot resist making at least one per day during this week. Let's see what we have this time.
This is Claudette Soares - Claudette Soares | EP (1971), for Copacabana, made as a self-titled record, in spite of the original titled available at the back cover, very big, by the way, "Quem Nao e A Maior, Tem que Dar Mais Amor". This EP has tracks from Claudette Soares - De Tanto Amor (1971) LP, 01 - De Tanto Amor, 02 - Amiga and 05 - Coisas, the remaining ones, 03 - Manequim and 04 - Shirley Sexy were probably first issued here. Roberto Menescal is in charge of production with arrangements by Luiz Claudio and Maestro Francisco de Moraes. Tracks include:
01 - De Tanto Amor (Roberto Carlos / Erasmo Carlos)
02 - Amiga (Roberto Menescal / Paulinho Tapajos)
03 - Manequim (Antonio Adolfo / Tiberio Gaspar)
04 - Shirley Sexy (Fred Falcao / Arnoldo Medeiros)
05 - Coisas (Taiguara)

Flora Purim - Midnight Sun (1989)
Hello, Good Evening! I friend of mine made a question today that I could not answer promptly, he asked why Flora Purim does not have more albums at Loronix besides her debut album, which is Flora Purim - Flora e M.P.M. (1964). I think the reason is availability, Flora Purim and Airto Moreira moved to the US in the late 60's, being there since them building their careers and most of Flora Purim albums are commercially available with a few exceptions, such like this one. Let's see.
This is Flora Purim - Midnight Sun (1988), for Sigem/CID, originally issued in US as Flora Purim - The Midnight Sun (1988), for Venture/Virgin records. Cover artworks of both issues are completely different; track listing brings the same songs, arranged on a different order. I'm not the perfect parrot to speak about Flora Purim albums released in US, except technical info, made available bellow. I will the album with you, please leave your thoughts on comment section; I need education on Flora Purim. Tracks and personnel are given per track this time. Tracks include:

Jongo Trio - Jongo Trio (1965)
I'm now the happy owner of the first issue of this legendary Farroupilha album, the first album recorded by the mighty Jongo Trio. This is a repost with several improvements, high quality back and front cover scans, nice vinyl ripping and alternative FLAC files are the improvements. I'm gathering the text I wrote for the first post more than a year ago.
This is Jongo Trio - Jongo Trio (1965), for Farroupilha, the legendary Bossa Nova Jazz combo featuring Saba (bass), Toninho (drums) and Cido (bass), competent musicians with previous collaborations with Pedrinho Mattar, Manfredo Fest and others. Jongo Trio have backed up Baden Powell on his early recordings, Elis Regina and also made several participations on other artists albums and live recordings. After releasing this album, they made an hiatus of five years, being back on recordings in 1970, 1972 and recently for Diebold, a fantastic album produced by our great Loronix friend Joao Samuel. Tracks include:

Challenge | Who are these Brazilian musicians?
Wilson Simonal - Promo EP (1970)
This one was by accident; I found this little record today inside a bunch of old Brazilian magazines sold by an old lady close to my place. She didn't know about the album and I had to buy the magazine for one Real to take it home. I think I did a nice deal, the EP never was played before and I could not wait longer to show Loronixers. Let's see.
This is Wilson Simonal - Promo EP (1970), for Odeon. Shell - the UK oil and gas company - when sponsored the V Festival Internacional da Cancao probably freely distributed this record. The EP feature three songs, the anthem of the festival, Cada um Cumpra com o Seu Dever, both arranged by Lyrio Panicalli and Brasil, Eu Fico (Jorge Ben). Tracks include:
01 - Hino do V Festival Internacional da Cancao (Miguel Gustavo)
02 - Brasil, Eu Fico (Jorge Ben)
03 - Que Cada um Cumpra com o Seu Dever (Wilson Simonal)

Conjunto Melodico de Norberto Baldauf - Ritmos da Madrugada Nr. 2 (1956)
Hello, good evening! Let's start the day with a new contribution from Mauro R. V., which is a big enthusiast of Para Dancar albums specially those several ones recorded by Waldir Calmon. This time, Mauro R.V. sent to Loronixers the second LP, 10-inch format, from one of the pioneers, Norberto Baldauf. Let's see.
This is Conjunto Melodico de Norberto Baldauf - Ritmos da Madrugada Nr. 2 (1956), for Odeon. I said Norberto Baldauf was a pioneer, he was the first out of a series of artists that came from the Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul, such as Elis Regina, Primo, Manfredo Fest and many others. Personnel listing was not credited this time. Tracks include:
01 - Sertão de Jequié (Klécius Caldas / Armando Cavalcanti) -- Balaio (Paixão Cortes / Barbosa Lessa) -- Eu Sem Maria (Dorival Caymmi / Alcyr Pires Vermelho) -- Longe dos Olhos (Djalma Ferreira / Cristóvão de Alencar) -- Favela (Hekel Tavares / Juraci Camargo)
02 - Faceira (Ary Barroso)

Miltinho - Quanto Mais Samba Melhor (1967)
I know this album fits better on a given weekend Samba day; however, I had no chance but make it today. I took a time today to dig an unknown old record store in Rio de Janeiro. When I was leaving the store, I heard two guys talking something about Loronix and this time I decided to introduce myself as zecalouro. They did not believe, they thought I was kidding, when I said: "OK, let's make like this, tonight I will make this album available there, so you will believe". I just retrieved the first one in my hand. I hope they are smiling now.
This is Miltinho - Quanto Mais Samba Melhor (1967), for Odeon, an album that I did not know the existence, featuring arrangements by Maestro Nelsinho and Maestro Lyrio Panicalli, in charge of tracks 01 - Manchete, 06 - Viver and 12 - Historia de Uma Roseira Triste. This is a very well produced album that I hope will give you high quality entertainment. Tracks include:

This is the first contribution of a new Loronixer, Old Nic, which is less than a month with our community I guess. Old Nic sent this album, never shown to Loronixers before, a live concert featuring the best of RGE cast in 1964. Let's check this first Old Nic contribution.
This is O Fino da Bossa (1964), for RGE, recorded live in Teatro Paramount, São Paulo, March 25th. O Fino da Bossa brings great performances from the artists that we like most, including a fantastic Oscar Castro Neves Berimbau (Baden Powell / Vinicius de Moraes) rendition. Tracks include:

02 - Garota de Ipanema (Tom Jobim / Vinicius de Moraes) - Zimbo Trio

Maysa & Tito Madi - Dois na Fossa (1975)
I never gave the deserved attention to this album and I decided to give it a spin tonight. The first track worth the admission price. Perhaps the last time I heard Maysa was months ago, when her voice spread over the house I started feeling great and the tracks with Maysa, Tito Madi, Maysa, Tito Madi, etc. makes it very nice to hear. I don't have idea if these tracks were released before on regular albums, but I'm sure RCA made a great repertoire selection. Let's see.
This is Maysa & Tito Madi - Dois Na Fossa (1975), for RCA Candem. There are some very good tracks on Dois na Fossa. Fantasia de Trombones and Fantasia de Cellos are performed by Maysa and each one brings three songs. They are great. Tito Madi performs some tunes of the almost impossible to find Tito Madi - Tito Madi em Nova Dimensao (1968), they are: Helena, Helena, Helena, Franqueza, A Mesma Historia Antiga, Sem Ter Que Chorar and others. Tracks include:
01 - "Fantasia de Trombones" Demais / Meu Mundo Caiu / Preciso Aprender a Ser Só - Maysa
02 - Helena Helena Helena - Tito Madi
03 - Ne Me Quitte Pas - Maysa
04 - A Mesma História Antiga - Tito Madi

Moacyr Peixoto - Um Piano Dentro da Noite (1979)
Very difficult decision. The family Peixoto gave several artists to Brazilian music, Moacyr Peixoto is the son of Elisario Peixoto, also known as Dadinho, nephew of the legendary pianist Nono and brother of three other artists, the pistonist Araken Peixoto, the singer Andyara and the most famous from the family, the singer Cauby Peixoto. I was decided to show Cauby Peixoto to Loronixers, but as I said the day would be more instrumental oriented.
This is Moacyr Peixoto - Um Piano Dentro da Noite (1979), for Eldorado, featuring the piano of Moacyr Peixoto with bass and drums, a trio. The session was recorded such like Moacyr Peixoto played in nightclubs; everything was recorded with no studio techniques and no arrangements. Twenty-six songs were recorded in three hours of studio time and nice tunes were selected to this album. Another strike by Luiz Harding. Tracks include.
Track List
01 - Misty (Garner / Burke)
02 - Andança (Danilo Caymmi / Edmundo Souto / Paulinho Tapajós)
03 - How Long Has This Being Going On (George Gershwin / Ira Gershwin / Wodehouse)

Music Video | Os Cariocas - Rio
Another nice video taken from the never-ending collection Luiz Harding made available to Loronixers. Luiz shows this time a beautiful video with Os Cariocas performing Rio (Roberto Menescal / Ronaldo Boscoli). It is a really nice video that will keep Loronixers entertained while zeca manages last minute issues with the posts of this Monday.

Edgar Gianullo - O Assunto é Edgar (1964)
Hello, good evening! Great posts are scheduled for today, most of them instrumental albums, we had several albums with lyrics last week and it is now time to give another chance to instrumental music. The great Marcelo Munhoz, from the mighty Sambassonics is responsible for this great contribution, an album from an artist never released at Loronix that I was tracking down for months. Let's see this nice pick from the wonderful Marcelo Munhoz LP collection.
This is Edgar Gianullo - O Assunto e Edgar (1964), for Farroupilha, the small but very influent Brazilian record label from the 60's that always releases nice albums. O Assunto e Edgar is the first album by Edgar Gianullo, a Brazilian arranger and guitar player that we had the chance to see a couple of weeks ago performing with Mauricio Einhorn on a video. Tasso Bangel from Conjunto Farroupilha is behind the scenes as producer and personnel list is truly amazing. Tracks include:
Track List
01 - Balanco Zona Sul (Tito Madi)
02 - Incerteza (Tasso Bangel)
03 - Rio (Roberto Menescal / Ronaldo Boscoli)

05 - Nana (Moacir Santos / Mario Telles)
06 - Corcovado (Antonio Carlos Jobim)

Nara Leao - Manha de Liberdade (1966)
This is a really unusual and worth checking Nara Leao album, recorded immediately after the anthological Show Opiniao concert. Manha de Liberdade has a strong influence of Geni Marcondes, in charge of all the arrangements. He makes different things with instruments, mainly percussion, delivering something that sometimes approaches the sounds of Tropicalia. The repertoire is very influence by Opiniao concert, leaving Bossa Nova standards behind.
This is Nara Leao - Manha de Liberdade (1966), for Philips. Among Nara Leao albums at Loronix, this is the cover I like most, it makes me think Nara Leao as a gladiator with her violao full of flowers. Personnel listing is not available, the arrangements of Geni Marcondes are the exception. Tracks include:
01 - A Banda (Chico Buarque)
02 - Ana Vai Embora (Franklin Dario)
03 - Funeral de um Lavrador (Joao Cabral de Mello Neto / Chico Buarque)
04 - Como Dois e Dois sao Quatro (Denoy de Oliveira / Ferreira Gullar)
05 - Morena dos Olhos D'Agua (Chico Buarque)
06 - Favela (Pandeirinho / Jorginho)
07 - Manha de Liberdade (Marco Antonio / Nelson Lins de Barros)
08 - Menina de Hiroshima (Luiz Carlos Sa / Francisco de Assis)
09 - Ladainha (Capinan - Gilberto Gil)
10 - Cancao do Bicho (Denoy de Oliveira / Geni Marcondes / Ferreira Gullar / Oduvaldo Viana Filho)
11 - Cancao da Primavera (Carlos Elias)

Conjunto Farroupilha - Conjunto Farroupilha (EP 45rpm)
Wonderful. I always thought I was right to pick some singles and EPs, but this album makes me feel that I'm 100% right. There are several treasures to discover on these little records and this one is a great surprise. Never gave a chance to it and when I gave it a spin today it was magic.
This is Os Farroupilhas - Os Farroupilhas EP 45rpm, for Columbia, featuring four tracks of pure beauty, nice repertoire and amazing voice arrangements. Little I know about this album, such as personnel and even release date, perhaps it was made in the early 60’s; it has much of Bossa Nova on it. Tracks include:
01 - Nunca (Lupscinio Rodrigues)
02 - Noites de Moscou (D.P. arrangements & Lyrics Inah Bangel)
03 - Sabado em Copacabana (Dorival Caymmi / Carlos Guinle)
04 - Meu Rio Grande (Garoto)

Marisa - Little Club Apresenta Marisa (1961)
Caetano Rodrigues will be amazing this Sunday morning when having breakfast checking what's new at Loronix. I said to him that I gave up to make this album to Loronixers, due some technical problems with the music. However, this is a fantastic and rather unknown Marisa album and I had the help from friends to make the fixes I need. Thanks for this nice contribution Caetano.
This is Marisa - Little Club Apresenta Marisa (1961), for Copacabana, once again delivering a great cover artwork that makes you fell in the mood to travel back on time watch this concert at Little Club, which is the nightclub that Marisa performed before recording this album. The session is beautiful with Marisa backed up by a not credited trio. Marisa sings sweet, she whispers in your ear sometimes on a nice repertoire, based on Brazilian standards and some international songs. Tracks include:
01 - Chuva para molhar o sol (Édson Borges - Agostinho dos Santos)
02 - Croquemitufle (Gilbert Becaud)
03 - Onde Estava Eu (Armando Cavalcanti - Victor Freire)
04 - Ternura Antiga (Ribamar - Dolores Duran)

Simone - Face a Face (1977)
Here we go on another Brazilian singer never made available to Loronixers. Simone started her career in the early 70's and had a promising beginning as one of the greatest voices of Brazilian popular music at that time. She recorded her first and self-titled album in 1973, being very popular throughout the 70's. When entering the 80's, Simone positioned herself as a romantic singer and got international recognition. A friend who lives in my building sent this album a long time ago. I think she will be happy to see her favorite singer at Loronix.
This is Simone - Face a Face (1977), for Odeon, perhaps the most successful Simone album, featuring several hits that everybody knows in Brazil by heart, such as: Jura Secreta, O Que Sera, Comecaria Tudo Outra Vez, among others. Odeon label made available to Simone a constellation of Brazilian musicians and arrangers. If you never had the chance to hear Simone this is a great start, her voice is unique and this is a very nice album. Tracks include:
