Orlando Silva - 25 Anos Cantando para as Multidoes (1959)

This is one of those wise contributions made by my mother. I had with me that Orlando Silva was one of the greatest Brazilian singers of the radio years and this album shows that Orlando Silva is the greatest Brazilian singer of all time. Ruy Castro says that Orlando Silva was the best singer in the world on his peak. My apologies to my mother and to every Orlando Silva fan for keeping this album on wait for several months. This is Orlando Silva - 25 Anos Cantando para as Multidoes (1959), for Odeon, presented here with Imperial (1968) reissue, a tribute to Orlando Silva 25 years of recording career, featuring a compilation with tunes that I could not identify the first release date. Ruy Castro says Orlando Silva golden years were from the late 30's to the early 40's, and I would like very much if someone make additional work to identify each track release year. Dick Farney Trio - Concerto de Jazz Ao Vivo (1973)

JOAO-SP sent us this great Dick Farney album, a missing piece on Dick Farney discography at Loronix. Here we have Dick Farney as pianist, not as a singer, performing renditions of international standards. I could not identify where this recording session took place, but my best guess it was at Auditorio do Globo, since the photos are credited to O Globo, a newspaper based in Rio de Janeiro. By the way, it is unbelievable that all Dick Farney career albums are not available commercially. Let's see.

This is Dick Farney Trio - Concerto de Jazz ao Vivo (1973), for London, featuring Dick Farney Trio performing live for the first time with a formation that brings two Jongo Trio musicians and also two active Dick Farney collaborators of many 70's releases, Antonio Pinheiro Filho, also known as Toninho and Sebastiao Oliveira da Paz, the legendary Saba. If you are in the mood of listening a Jazz concert, featuring three great musicians performing a repertoire of standards with lots of improvisations, this is the album you were waiting for. Jacques Klein - Musicas de Dorival Caymmi na Interpretacao de Jacques Klein (1953)

Every time I think I know everything about Brazilian music, I find something that tells me that I have a lot to learn. This album is a perfect example, featuring an artist that I never heard about, but with a prolific discography and several contributions as sideman on other artist albums. Let's see.

This is Jacques Klein - Musicas de Dorival Caymmi na Interpretacao de Jacques Klein (1953), for Sinter, which is the fifth album released by Sinter in the 10-inch format. Jacques Klein is a pianist with a classical background, being the winner of 1955 Harriet Cohen contest in London as the best pianist of that year. This album brings Jacques Klein accompanied by drums and bass performing instrumental renditions of Dorival Caymmi music, including two compositions where Jacques Klein is listed as Dorival Caymmi's partner, 02 - Tao So and 07 - Nessa Rua Tao Deserta. The vinyl was on a terrible shape and you will notice eventual noise, so take it for its importance and the chance to list at Loronix a new artist with an important contribution to Brazilian music. Dolores Duran - Este Norte e Minha Sorte (1959)

My schedule ended a little bit earlier today and for my happiness, and perhaps everybody, I was downtown close to some old vinyl shops that I don't visit as often as the ones in Copacabana. This album was the outcome of my visit, taken on really bad condition, but with a price that I could afford, a real bargain. I left the store immediately and took my place direction with a smile on my face, I never saw this cover artwork and my hope to find this album was lost months ago. We have here the last album recorded by the Brazilian singer and composer Dolores Duran, released in 1959, months before her passing in October 1959. This is truly a great find and an historical album. Let's see.

This is Dolores Duran - Este Norte e Minha Sorte (1959), for Copacabana, featuring a whole session dedicated to Baiao, a music style from Brazil Northeast, very popular in the 50's. With a couple of spins, this is so far the best Baiao album I have ever heard and Dolores Duran delivers an always-nice performance, no matter the style. The repertoire features several Dolores Duran compositions with Francisco Anizio, the well-known Brazilian artist and humorist Chico Anisio. I could not resist selecting 01 - Te Cuida Zeca for Loronix Preview Center. Dolores Duran has the accompaniment of a not credited Conjunto Regional, delivering lots of Baiao percussion and accordion player. Tracks include:

Orquestra de Camera de Blumenau - Jobim & Piazzolla | Encontro (1988)

I cannot remember how many requests I have received by friends searching for "The album that Jobim recorded with Piazzolla" or "the record they play together". I explain that both never had the chance to perform together and the root cause of the misunderstanding was an album recorded in tribute of Antonio Carlos Jobim and Astor Piazzolla. People did not get convinced with my explanations, but now I think everybody will understand, courtesy of the mighty JOAO-SP that kindly sent this album on perfect conditions to our community. Thanks once again JOAO-SP. Let's see.

This is Orquestra de Camera de Blumenau - Jobim & Piazzolla | Encontro (1988), for Basf, featuring two different situations on a single album, Side A brings Antonio Carlos Jobim and Vinicius de Moraes compositions, performed by Orquestra de Camera de Blumenau with arrangements by Maestro Guerra Peixe, while Side B is dedicated to Astor Piazzolla, performed by the same Orchestra with arrangements in charge of Jose Bragatto. This album is much better than my best estimates, both sessions are unique with Orquestra de Camera de Blumenal conduced by Norton Morozowicz, also in charge of art direction. Loronix Preview Center brings a selected tune by Antonio Carlos Jobim and an additional track with Astor Piazzolla music. Tracks include:

Paulo Moura - Paulo Moura Interpreta Radames Gnattali (1959)

AdHoc really rocks! He made my week with this reposting. It seems he reads my mind. I have been wondering last Sunday if I would have a chance to repost this essential album, quite impossible to find on vinyl and for reasons that I cannot explain, very difficult to find on its 1995 CD reissue. Actually, this album deserves to be always commercially available. Thanks once again AdHoc, I can't stop thinking on your next contribution. Perhaps you will read my mind again. Let's see.

This is Paulo Moura - Paulo Moura Interpreta Radames Gnattali (1959), for Continental, presented here by AdHoc's 1995 remastered CD reissue with upgrades on cover artwork, standard MP3s, FLAC files and the previous missing track 08 - Romance. This little 10-inch features Radames Gnattali compositions especially written for Paulo Moura, perhaps the first time in Brazil that a great Maestro and composer writes music to be recorded for a given musician, according with Haroldo Eiras liner notes. AdHoc says something that I totally agree, this album makes us feel very good, in peace, and that's my wish to everyone engaged on Loronix community today, peace. Tracks include:

Os Sambistas da Guanabara - Show de Samba Vol. 2 (1964)

Hello, good evening! I use to follow a classification of the music made available at Loronix, this is important to address several audiences. We have instrumental music, Choro, Samba, Para Dancar, MPB, singers, divas, orchestra among others. This is the first orchestra album made available in 2008 and it is a repost of an early contribution of the mighty Caetano Rodrigues. Actually, I thought it was not a repost, since both covers are really different, being the second one by Caetano Rodrigues and the first by zecalouro. I think Caetano's cover is the best one and so far I did not understand why Odeon released both covers. I'm making the original text written in January 2008. Let's see.

Wow! A Sunday of Caetano's contribution and now a really different Samba with orchestra LP. I appreciate the LPs with Samba rhythms and orchestra arrangements. Maestro Portinho is the one that deliver the best results in my opinion. I will never forget a release available at Loronix with Portinho making a Tribute to Noel Rosa, a perfect example of Samba with Orchestra. Let's see what Caetano shows now to Loronixers.

This is Os Sambistas da Guanabara - Show de Samba Volume 2 (1964), for Odeon. In spite of this breathtaking cover artwork, that takes me several samples to achieve a great result, this LP is more oriented to what is used to call as the Samba made by the "Malandros", hard to explain in English, so I will ask the help of Wikipedia to define it. The music is different in terms of the highlight given to specific percussion instruments, such as: tamborim, pandeiro, reco-reco, cuica, etc. including some solos. Take a look at the Malandro definition, just bellow. Tracks include:

Malandragem is a Brazilian Portuguese term for the Bohemian lifestyle - an ethos of idleness, fast living and petty crime - traditionally celebrated in samba lyrics. The exponent of this lifestyle, the malandro, has become significant to Brazilian national identity as a folk hero. Constantly present in Brazilian literature, besides other arts such as cinema and music, the malandro resembles the Italian Picaro, but, differently from this, he has a more criminal character, and frequently sees his espertos (Portuguese for smart) actions not working as expected.

Baden Powell - 27 Horas de Estudio (1969)

This album has a great importance for Loronix and me as well. I'm very happy to make this upgrade using the original Elenco 1969 first issue, including the LP cover scans and my own transfer, including the FLAC files options. 27 Horas de Estudio was also the album that gave me the opportunity to reach for the first time the awesome BrazilOnGuitar, one of the greatest websites I had the chance to visit in my life, which I'm gathering 27 Horas de Estudio information from BrazilOnGuitar Opus tab. Let's read BOG info.

BrazilOnGuitar says: We think that 27 Horas de Estudio was recorded at the end of 1968 because BP played a very similar arrangement of Iemanja on Le Monde Musical 2. We don't know of any other record with this arrangement.

Lotus, swinging in the style of Django and Jacques Loussier, opens this ambitious record. It is one of the most beautiful compositions on 27 Horas and sounds like a homage to these musicians, but is in fact dedicated to his fast car, a Lotus. The string arrangement of All the things you are has not the lightness of the 1967 version and rather resembles the version from 1959. Three solo pieces form the center of this record, the Spanish Violao, the Moorish O cego aderaldo and the Brazilian A lenda do Abaete, showing that the thirty years old Baden belonged to the master guitarists of that time.

With compositions like Um abraco no Codo or Alo, Ernesto he would deal with on later recordings. In 1974 Alo, Ernesto would become Valsa No.1 and be played in studio and on stage. The reflective Viagem and the Double by Bach close the record.

27 Horas de Estudio was for a long time only available as an LP and (without the WWW) very hard to find outside of Brazil. The long awaited CD-reissue (2003) was carefully remastered and shows the original Elenco cover.

Nana Caymmi - Nana (1977)

I was googling something that I cannot remember this week when I found an article written by Aramis Millarch in 1977 at the great Tabloide Digital. Millarch said that Nana Caymmi was among the top five Brazilian singer and ironically she was widely unknown by the audience in Brazil. Immediately, I went to Loronix to Find It Nana Caymmi and I got surprised when Find It returned only one album, made available almost two years ago. It is necessary to bring Nana Caymmi to Loronix first page. Let's see.

This is Nana Caymmi - Nana (1977), for RCA Victor, featuring Joao Donato, Dori Caymmi, Durval Ferreira (diretor criativo) and Dorival Caymmmi as special guest on track 02 - Milagre. This is a beauty of an album recorded by a great singer with a great team of musicians. Most of these tunes are well known by Nana Caymmi and other artist’s performances with my highlights on 02 - Milagre, 05 - Falam de Mim, 08 - Cais and 09 - Se Queres Saber, which is the track listed at Loronix Preview Center. Varios Artistas - Festival da Bossa Nova (1963)

I have been monitor price and availability of this album since the very first beginning of Loronix. Perhaps this amazing cover artwork has called my attention to this record. I never had the chance to find it by a price I could afford at on-line auction sites and never had the chance to take it on my hands to understand what kind of Bossa Nova Festival was that. Today I got it on my favorite old vinyl store in Copacabana for a unbelievable price. Let's see.

This is Festival da Bossa Nova (1963), for Odeon, unfortunately, not the live recording of a Bossa Nova Festival, but a compilation of Bossa Nova tunes performed by selected artists from Odeon cast, as follows: Walter Wanderley, Joao Gilberto, Isaura Garcia, Pery Ribeiro and Luiz Bonfa. The album was new as it would be in 1963 and played so nicely that I did not need to use any noise reduction application. This is the perfect record for those who are new to Bossa Nova and for those who are looking for a session performed by great artists based on a nice repertoire. Tracks include:
