Donga - A Musica de Donga (1974)

Hello, good evening! Carnaval has just started in Brazil. We have a big weekend ahead, a 5-day long holiday. Everyone that has the opportunity to travel, do so, leaving their homes today and returning only on the night of Wednesday. I'll be in Rio de Janeiro, as I use to do. Carnival makes Rio a quiet and empty city, believe it or not. I will follow the example of most music blogs friends of Loronix, showing something with Carnaval flavor. Let's see.

This is Donga - A Musica de Donga (1974), for the legendary label Marcus Pereira. By definition, this is not a Carnaval album, but a very important document featuring Donga, a musician who is part of Brazilian popular music history. Donga is credited to be the first to record a Samba tune in the year of 1916, a very important song that we know in Brazil by heart, Pelo Telefone, which is the track 10 of this album. Anyway, the whole album is delicious to hear with renowned musicians performing Donga compositions, including Elizeth Cardoso, Almirante, Paulo Tapajos, Dino, Meyra, Altamiro Carrilho, Canhoto and many others.

In a couple of hours I will be updating Loronix with a new interface. If you are reading this text with the interface already updated, I really hope you like it. This new look has many new features that should be implemented in the forthcoming days. It is also faster than the previous one. That's all friends. Lucio Alves - Balancamba (1963)

Hello, good evening! I was looking for something at Amazon.com this weekend when by coincidence, I found this album labeled "This item has been discontinued by the manufacturer." I believe that Balancamba was the last Lucio Alves album commercially available. This is sad. We know these reissues are forged by the hard work of people who Love Brazilian music as we do. I'm speaking specifically about Caetano Rodrigues and Charles Gavin, two great friends of our community, to whom I dedicate this record, which will continue his public career -- on very modest basis by the way -- here at Loronix. Let's see.

This is Lucio Alves - Balancamba (1963) for Elenco as ME-2, the second album released by the anthological and very important Brazilian label. Balancamba blends the words "balanco" and "samba" and makes justice to this title. Lucio Alves's unique voice and sophisticated timing delivers a repertoire with compositions by Ronaldo Boscoli and Roberto Menescal, which is also here (probably with a Conjunto...). I was wondering about the duo excitement when working with the great master in a whole record... And to close the golden pot, Maestro Carlos Monteiro de Souza takes care of arrangements and conduction. I think it is time to stop. Lucio Alves does not need to be introduced. Tracks include:

Paulinho Nogueira - Sambas e Marchas da Nova Geracao (1967)

Hello, good evening! I am very proud to be in charge of the technology side of Musicos do Brasil: Uma Enciclopedia Instrumental, the first Brazilian music Encyclopedia devoted to instrumental music. The website was recently updated with new features and left the Beta stage. When I have an album to share with the community, the Encyclopedia is very useful, being a solid reference source. Follow this link to reach Paulinho Nogueira's entry and read about this great master of Brazilian guitar.

The Encyclopedia says that Paulinho Nogueira was more active as a teacher than as a studio musician. I also learned that Paulinho Nogueira was a designer, an essential skill to forge his invention, the craviola, an instrument that was adopted by Luiz Bonfa on his anthological Jacaranda album. Anyway, it is better leave the discovery pleasure for you; in the meantime, Loronix delivers another great Paulinho Nogueira record never released in CD. Let's see.

It is about a guy that made a not authorized commercial movie about a store using a mobile phone camera, here. You will understand why it is so great when you take a look. Anyway, Paulinho Nogueira has the accompaniment of not credit musicians, singing on a few tracks.
