Celia Reis - O Samba é Celia Reis (1965)

This is Celia Reis, her first time at Loronix, thanks to Edson Mendes, the fast friend that sent us the Front and Back cover of the Elizeth Cardoso LP with Joao Gilberto as a side-man, playing guitar. It is hard to write about this album, really above the average of LPs with Samba songs.

This is Celia Reis - O Samba e Celia Reis (1962), for Philips, solid from start to the end with arrangements of Baden Powell and also guitar playing in some tracks. Backing vocals are wonderful, provided by MPB-4. Celso Murilo plays organ on several tracks. Celia Reis was a big surprise for me, beautiful singing. Edson Mendes made a wonderful job providing also background information on this record, which is included with the music. Tracks include:

Os Tatuis - Os Tatuis (1965)

In Brazil, Tatuí is (or was) a small crab, easily fond at the beach until the 80's. I think they have disappeared. Tatui is also the name of a city at Sao Paulo State. Tatui is also the name of a fantastic Samba Jazz band lead by Jose Roberto Bertrami - future Azimuth leader - that take this name as a homage to the city were band members were born, Tatui.

This is Os Tatuis - Os Tatuis (1965), for Farroupilha, an above the average Samba Jazz LP by an early Jose Roberto Bertrami. Personnel is José Roberto Bertrami (piano), Cláudio Henrique Bertrami (bass), Elizeu de Campos Vieira (drums), Og Vasconcelos (sax tenor), Ivo Mendes (piston) and Aresky Aratto (organ) with Bertrami arrangements. This LP is a contribution of Caetano Rodrigues and also another tribute to Sivuca. Samba Nouvelle Vague on it's ten tracks from the original 1961 10'. This is an early Sivuca album, recorded in Paris and featuring Sivuca on guitar, accordion, vocals and piano. Stay with tracks and memory of this great Brazilian Musician. Thanks Caetano for remembering to release Sivuca close to this special day, Christmas.

Varios Artistas - A Brasilian Christmas (1996)

Hello, Good Night! It was hard to get something for Christmas with Bossa Nova on top. This is what I could get, not exactly Bossa Nova, but a nice cast of Brazilian artists performing Christmas songs, so amazing that should be heard with attention even when it is not Christmas time.

This is A Brasilian Christmas (1996), for Astor Place Records, wonderful performances with Joyce, Dori Caymmi, Ivan Lins, Leo Gandelman, Gilson Peranzzetta, Oscar Castro-Neves, Ricardo Silveira, Toninho Horta and João Bosco, produced by Oscar Castro-Neves and Miles Goodman. Lyrics are in Portuguese and English, but the music is true Brazilan all the time. I'm not moved by Christmas time, but I want to say that you should try this album as soon as you can, just to have all songs by heart on Christmas Eve. Tracks include:

Orquestra RCA Victor - Estereo-Samba (1961)

Perhaps this Christmas, I will try to make some research on Brazilian orchestras from the 50's and 60's held by recording companies, such as Orquestra RGE, Orquestra RCA Victor, etc. It is amazing that record labels kept their own orchestras to serve the maestro under contract. Additional details about this subject are greatly appreciated, specially these RCA and RGE Orquestras.

Naturally, we have another Orchestra LP to show, by the way, another wonderful Caetano Rodrigues release. This is Orquestra RCA Victor - Estereo-Samba (1961), for RCA Victor. This was the second album released by RCA Victor using Stereo Technology. You will find enclosed the back cover, with detailed information about the "new" system.

This is Ze Maria, Seu Orgao e Seu Conjunto - Bossa & Balanco S/A (1965), for Continental, a late release by Ze Maria that had a productive career, releasing several albums from 1957 until his last in 1973. I could not search successfully information about this LP, which is very dancing with funny lyrics sung by a chorus. Samba Rock fans will enjoy it a lot. Orquestra Cid Gray - So Samba Sabendo Sambar (1961)

Friends, this is a nice release. Orchestra LP, one of my favorites. When Loronix started, I never realize that we would be with several orchestra LPs as we are today. Caetano Rodrigues is helping a lot zecalouro, he is making a good education with the green bird, showing how to identify the gems and presenting each artist, Maestro and musician with details that only Caetano have in mind.

I'm very happy to present this LP, which is one of Caetano's favorites; this is Orquestra Cid Grey - So Samba Sabendo Sambar (1961), for Continental. Before you think about Googling the name "Cid Grey", take a minute to read a story; Cid Grey is the nickname of Renato de Oliveira, the same maestro that made arrangements of Morgana LP today. Renato de Oliveira was not satisfied and tired of recording sessions, willing to make something different. He decided, three years before this LP was released, to move to Sao Paulo and create a dancing orchestra. However, Renato Oliveira was a renowned and well-known Maestro by that time, so he decided to use the name Cid Grey.

Something went wrong; actually, something went really great. Cid Grey was so successful that fans were asking for a Cid Grey LP and he made several ones as Cid Grey as times goes by. According with the linear notes written by Fernando Cesar, this is the best Cid Grey record. You cannot miss it. Tracks include:

Alberto Mota e Seu Conjunto - Voa Meu Samba (1961)

I was silly to go down to make the rain coverage to Loronixers, so stupid that I forgot to pick up the camera to take some pictures. The rain was huge. The cars parked on buildings with garage on the basement, bellow sea level were such like submarines, with only the roof out of the water level.

Excited, I moved away to my place to check everything, when another shower starts, strong as the last one. I ran like a rabbit stopping in the middle with a great doubt, do we get more water running at the rain or walking? Who knows this answer? Just in case if happens again, I think the one who runs get more water in the face.

Anyway, this is Alberto Mota e Seu Conjunto - Voa Meu Samba (1961), for Polydor. Once again, a cover with an airplane, it seems that Brazilian music had a good partnership with the airlines in the past. Some old LPs does not have planes at the front cover such like this one, but sometimes the airline business appears very frequently at the back cover.

This is the debut LP of the Brazilian pianist Alberto Mota that release another three LPs, the last one in 1966. I could not search if Alberto Mota took another direction on his career before this last LP. Morgana - Morgana (1960)

Hello, Good Night! Another hot day in Rio de Janeiro, raining at the end of the afternoon. My experience says that a rain after a sunny day is not to be celebrated. When the rain falls at the boiling ground, the rain becomes vapor, going back to the sky at 100 C. Stay away of the rain at the end of a sunny day.

This LP is another outcome of the vinyl fair in Sao Paulo; perhaps it is much easier to find this artist in Sao Paulo. I hope Refer did not see this one before me. Let's see what happens, this is Morgana - Morgana (1960), for Copacabana, the third LP of this female singer who made a great success in the early 60's.

The friend who gave it told that Morgana LPs are very easy to sell, with a great demand of collectors, I'm happy to get earlier for sharing with Loronixers. Morgana is backed up by Renato de Oliveira e Sua Orquestra. zecalouro made his best to fix the cover and polish the music to get rid of scratches, perhaps it was not enough and some eventual pops or clacks can appear. Sergio Ricardo & Lindolfo Gaya - Esse Mundo e Meu (OST) (1965)

This is a Caetano Rodrigues contribution that was waiting for a chance for a several weeks. Blame it on zecalouro for it. He kept on secret a wonderful and very hard to find LP, anyway, Christmas is coming and maybe he wants to release the some nice surprises to celebrate.

Meet, Sergio Ricardo & Lindolfo Gaya - Esse Mundo E Meu (OST) (1965), for Forma as FM-5. The collectors use to know by heart the identification code from the record labels that they like most, such as: ME-XX for Elenco, MOFB XXXX for Odeon, etc. I never had a request for this FM-5 OST, which is really surprising.

Esse Mundo E Meu is black and white movie picture directed by Sergio Ricardo that follows two men living in a Rio de Janeiro slum: a black shoe-shiner and a white mill worker. I never saw this movie and perhaps it is not available on DVD or VHS, but the soundtrack is nice with Sergio Ricardo compositions and Lindolfo Gaya arrangements. This post is to address an old request made by Mr. D&C. I'm really happy to find it last Sunday in Sao Paulo, it is considered hard to find and it was a real bargain. Let's see how these guys make it a Loronix, I also had great curiosity to hear the music from this band.

Meet, Joni Maza e Seu Conjunto - Uma Brasa com Joni Maza (1966), for Copacabana. Joni Maza is the bandleader and plays drums, but the guy in charge of arrangements and compositions is the organist Mario Junior. They had a "long" career, releasing more three LPs after this first one and terminating in 1972.

Personnel is Joni Maza (drums), Beto (trombone), Sergio e Zamora (vocals), Adilson (bass), Ari (guitar), Antônio (sax), Nilton (tumbadora) and Mário Jr. (organ). I'm not sure if any of these members could sustain a solo career or make a life as a musician. Tracks include:

Hello, Good Night! I had a nice time yesterday at the phone with the mighty Claudia B from Cantos e Encantos about this cover. We were trying to realize together what they meant by putting the "formal" Carlos Gomes head at the left and the girl dressed like a waiter with no paints at the right. Actually, we had a lot of fun with this cover.

Thanks Claudia B for making this LP available from your great collection, I hope you don't get made with the green parrot, since I'm posting it without saying to you. Abracadabra-BR has also published this LP a couple of days ago. I could not resist. This is Rogerio Duprat - Os Imortais, Os Mestres de Sempre na "Bossa" de Hoje (N/A), for the obscure VS/Vilela Santos, a very early Duprat recording, probably his first solo LP.

L'Orchestre Brésilien Ritmo Da Bossa - Bossa Nova (195?)

Hello, Good Night! What a hot day in Rio. It seems that we will have a HOT summer this year. I don't know if the season has started officially, but today was as hot as January. I need to understand what is my problem with summer, maybe some kind of blood pressure decay on hot days. zecalouro loves it, demanding much more attention. Wonderful renditions of Bossa Nova tunes, the kind of record that makes you think who is behind it. There is a group of a few selected artists that makes me fell disturbed if they are not release for more than two of three weeks. This Brazilian Diva is one of those, Elizeth Cardoso releases were very important to bring a bigger audience to Loronix at the beginning. The legendary Cancao do Amor Demais LP was released in the second or third week of Loronix and made history, actually, it is part of history.

Let's visit again Elizeth Cardoso, with a release that I like most, the earlier ones. This is Elizeth Cardoso - Naturalmente (1959), for Copacabana, with orchestral arrangements of Severino Filho from Os Cariocas. The repertorie is based on classic samba tunes from Ary Barroso, Tito Madi, Marilia Batista, Antonio Maria and others. Self-explanatory release with Elizeth Cardoso on her peak, doing what she wants with her voice. Tracks include:

Lucienne Franco - Lucienne e Amor (1962)

This is the end of a hunting that started since the early Loronix days, made possible by visit to Sao Paulo described at the last post. Refer spoke with me about this singer and I could never get a LP to share with Loronixers, now the hunting is over.

Meet, Lucianne Franco - Lucienne e Amor (1962), for the mighty Copacabana. Lucienne Franco was a very famous singer in the late 50's until the mid 60's. She was Ary Barroso favorite interpreter. Lucienne released several singles, EPs and 78 RPMs, this is her second LP out of the three released among 1959 and 1963.

The complete personnel listing is unknown, but what is known so far is good enough to capture your attention: Moacyr Silva is in charge of production and direction, Baden Powell made all the arrangements and plays guitar in several tracks. Essa é a visão de um dos corredores da feira, havia dois corredores grandes onde os vendedores expunham seus LPs em caixas. Foi difícil flanar pelos corredores e tomar as decisões corretas entre diversas opções.

This is a perspective of one of the two alleys of the fair. Sellers were offering their LPs on big boxes. I had a hard time walking around the alleys and taking decisions among several wonders available.

Esse pequeno corredor conecta os dois corredores maiores. Esse vendedor é um dos melhores entre todos, muito bons. Advinha quem está sentado à esquerda da foto? Ganha um doce daquela lojinha, que pelo ar de enfado da mocinha ficou vazia. Quem vai pensar em comer doces em um lugar como esse?

This small alley connects the other two big alleys. This seller is one of the best I found there, but they were all great, no exception. Guess who is sitting at the left? The winner takes a candy from that delicatessen with that bored girl inside. Anyway, who will think about candies on a place like this?

Rosana Toledo - Momento Novo (1964)

Hello! Good Night! Today, the green bird has flown to Sao Paulo to visit Caetano Rodrigues and old vinyl fair. Great time with Caetano and great music available at the fair with fair prices (sorry, I could not resist). Stay tuned, as never at Loronix, many wonderful new releases will come daily.

As we are releasing one single post today, it is necessary to be an amazing post, not the outcome of the fair visit, but another nice contribution of Caetano Rodrigues that we are starting to get used and addicted to it.

This is Rosana Toledo - Momento Novo (1964), for Philips, the last Rosana Toledo LP, considered one of her best albums. Maestro Lindolfo Gaya that also leads Orquestra Gaia in all tracks arranges Momento Novo. This is a solid LP from the start to the end with this truly amazing cover. I'm wondering if these little babies have some kind of connection with the LP title, Momento Novo. Tracks include:
