Luiz Arruda Paes, Seu Coro e Sua Orquestra - Brasil em Tempo de Danca (1959)

Do not let the word "Danca" at album title cheats you. This is not a dancing LP and also not a regular album. Brasil em Tempo de Danca is an album by Luiz Arruda Paes, the acclaimed Brazilian Maestro, zecalouro's favorite Maestro. Thanks Caetano for making this album available with not planning, very nice surprise. I urge Loronixers to check this album and also earlier Luiz Arruda Paes available here. Loronix Find It should give you directions to the great music of Luiz Arruda Paes.

This is Luiz Arruda Paes, Seu Coro e Sua Orquestra - Brasil em Tempo de Danca (1959), for Odeon. It's hard to believe how Caetano has this pretty hard to find album on MINT conditions, cover artwork with no scratches and vinyl as taken from the envelop for the first time. Luiz Arruda Paes has orchestra and choir at his service, delivering orchestra arrangements for a nice repertoire of Brazilian standards. Caetano asked to highlight Ho Ba La La as his best pick with Luiz Arruda Paes mixing male and female voices of his choir on a fascinating texture. Luiz Arruda Paes is still active and I'm making available a video with the Maestro conducting an orchestra with his arrangements for Asa Branca. This video was recorded less than 15 days ago at Festival de Inverno de Campos do Jordao and it is Loronix celebration to Luiz Arruda Paes. Tracks include:

01 - Mulher (Custódio Mesquita / Evaldo Ruy)
02 - O Apito no Samba (Luis Bandeira)
03 - Insônia (Mário Albanese / Heitor Carillo)
04 - Por Causa de Você (Tom Jobim / Dolores Duran)

11 - Mente (Fernando César)
12 - Nem Eu (Dorival Caymmi)

Jair Rodrigues - E Isso Ai (1971)

Hello, Good Evening! We had a hot Saturday in Rio de Janeiro, such like summer, a summer inside winter. I hope the weather keeps sunny for the next three weeks. Rio is hosting the XV Pan-American Games, which is something like the Olympics, but only for Americas and sub-regions. I can feel the Olympic atmosphere; the city starts to be "in the mood". In front of my place, they built an arena for beach volley, which is a sport that Brazil has a great chance to win a gold medal. Anyway, Saturday, sun up all day, people in the streets, Loronix = Samba today, we need to start with a solid Samba album today.

This is Jair Rodrigues - É Isso Ai (1971), for Philips, which is Jair Rodrigues at his peak. He is one of the most commercial and popular Samba interpreters of all time, mainly at the 60's and 70's decades. Hearing this album, I it is easy to identify several tunes that were blockbusters by the release time, as Tengo Tengo, Herois da Liberdade, Martin Cerere, O Importante e Ser Fevereiro, and others. I hope you enjoy our Saturdays Samba posts and this Jair Rodrigues album as well. Tracks include:

1. Minha Escola (Evaldo Gouveia / Jair Amorim)
2. Tengo Tengo (Mangueira Minha Madrinha Querida) (Zuzuca)
3. Margot de Tal (Evaldo Gouveia / Jair Amorim)
4. Rei Pelé Rei Luis (Durval Vieira / Reginaldo Santos)
5. Vem Dindinha (Mangueira Nossa Madrinha Querida) (Noel Rosa de Oliveira / Hayblan)
6. Heróis da Liberdade (Silas de Oliveira / Mano Décio da Viola / M. Ferreira)
7. Martin Cererê (Zé Catimba / Gibi)
8. Eu Sonhei Que Tu Estavas Tão Linda (Lamartine Babo / Francisco Matoso) Chão de Estrelas (Orestes Barbosa / Silvio Caldas) Bodas de Prata (Roberto Martins / Mário Rossi) Boa Noite Amor (José Maria de Abreu / Francisco Matoso)
9. O Importante É Ser Fevereiro (Wando / Nilo Amaro)
10. Dono do Universo (Eustáquio Sena)
11. Joana da Misericórdia (Édson Conceição / Aloísio Silva)
12. Bate-papo Com Cartola (João Roberto Kelly)

Bud Shank / Clare Fischer / Joe Pass - Brasamba (1963)

We should thanks Caetano Rodrigues for this album, part of his last set of contributions to Loronix. Released in 1963, this is one of those albums recorded by American Jazz musicians in response of the arriving of Bossa Nova in the United States. Bossamba was on my hunting list since I saw it for the first time in Caetano Rodrigues book, now is time to hear it, altogether with my friends at Loronix.

This is Bud Shank, Clare Fischer and Joe Pass - Brasamba (1963), for Pacific Jazz. In spite of its importance, Brasamba worth by putting together these three legends. Bud Shank, a well-known artist by his great collaboration to the music from Brazil and Brazilian musicians, pretty recently, he recorded another album together with Joao Donato. Clare Fischer is a gifted pianist that was introduced for the first time with a fantastic Bossa Nova record by Caetano, the first international Bossa Nova album made available at Loronix. Joe Pass is a name that does not need any kind of introduction, one of the great Jazz guitar players. They are accompanied by bass, vibes and percussion, as detailed on personnel listing, just before tracks. Tracks include:

Music Video | Antonio Carlos Jobim - Dindi / Luiza (1987) Japan

In the very first beginning of Loronix, I received from a Japanese friend a video with Antonio Carlos Jobim and Banda Nova performing live in Japan, according with this friend, the performance happened in 1987, Japan, city of Hibiya. By that time he said it was a personal gift, not to be shown at Loronix as the audience had some blank spaces and this was not good.

After a year, I watched the video again and my first reaction was to send an email to him asking for a new permission. He wrote back in a matter of hours saying that since then, Loronix changed his mind, his habits and his life, giving also the needed authorization.

This is the kind of thing that makes my day. I'm so glad with Loronixers and the community we created together around this website.

Watch this video with attention, it is unique, I never saw The Maestro with such deep feelings performing at the piano. A Very special moment. The songs are Dindi and Luiza. Thanks Japanese friend.

Hope uEnjoy!

Banda Mantiqueira - Bixiga (2000)

Hello, Good Evening! It is amazing this fantastic album has gone out of print only seven years before it was issued for the first time. This is another request originated by the folks of Quadradinho (Loronix message box at the side bar), by the way, Quadradinho has been an attraction and you should move your eyeballs there. Loronixer Carlos Braga is making a revolution there, telling stories, sharing experiences and several Loronix friends are running there to interact. Do not miss Quadradinho. This post is zecalouro homage to Quadradinho friends, they are making a better Loronix.

This is Banda Mantiqueira - Bixiga (2000), for Pau Brasil. Thanks Luiz Harding for pointing the records made by Banda Mantiqueira, considered by many the best Brazilian Big Band in activity. Their first album, Aldeia was nominated for a Grammy price as the best Latin(?) Jazz Album, a blend of American Jazz with music from Brazilian legends such Antonio Carlos Jobim and Pixinguinha. Jorge Ben - Solta o Pavao (1975)

I have been wondering about Jorge Ben for weeks. Actually, several friends warned me that Jorge Ben was a missing piece here. They were right; Jorge Ben is a very important artist to Brazilian popular music. If you make a detailed analysis on his discography you will find Bossa Nova, Tropicalismo, MPB, Samba and several other styles. Many fans, inside and outside Brazil, adore him.

This is Jorge Ben - Solta o Pavao (1975), for Philips. It was not easy to start with such experimental album. Solta o Pavao immediately follows the celebrated Tabua de Esmeralda and both are connected to each other. I cannot understand why Solta o Pavao remains obscure, while Tabua de Esmeralda stays under the spotlights, Solta o Pavao belongs to one of the most creative Jorge Ben phases and brings some of my favorite Jorge Ben songs, such as Zagueiro and the fantastic Jorge de Capadocia, among others. Tracks include:

01 - Zagueiro (Jorge Ben)
02 - Assim Falou Santo Tomás de Aquino (Jorge Ben)
03 - Velhos Flores Criancinhas e Cachorros (Jorge Ben)
04 - Dorothy (Jorge Ben) with Evinha

Escolas de Samba - Batucada Fantastica Vol. 2 (1975)

This is a quick post to address the request of Andreas Pavel from IMMB, which is our partner site Instituto da Memoria Musical Brasileira that owns and maintain the great discography available at Jornal Musical. I'm not sure this post should address Andreas request since he was looking for Luciano Perrone - Batucada Fantastica Vol. 2 for Musidisc. This is also Batucada Fantastica Vol. 2 for Musidisc, but Luciano Perrone is not credited. Let's see what we have.

This is Escolas de Samba - Batucada Fantastica Vol. 2 (1975), for Musidisc. Thanks to GK for making zecalouro remembers this album, as a great coincidence, GK offered Batucada Fantastica Vol. 2 in the same day I was taking the music out of it. GK said this is one of the greatest covers he have seen and I agree. There is no songs or melodies here, it is all about percussion, such like Luciano Perrone releases in the same style. However, Batucada Fantastica Vol. 2 is performed by some of the most famous Escolas de Samba do Rio de Janeiro, making the record vivid as those Carnaval Samba parades or Escolas de Samba rehearsals. Tracks include:

01 - Exibicao de Ritmo - Salgueiro
02 - Ensaio de Ritmo - Salgueiro
03 - Ensaio de Bateria Nr. 1 - Mangueira
04 - Ensaio de Bateria Nr. 2 - Mangueira

06 - Ensaio de Ritmo Nr. 2 - Mocidade
07 - Ensaio de Ritmo Nr. 3 - Mocidade
08 - Ensaio de Ritmo Nr. 1 - Portela
09 - Ensaio de Ritmo Nr. 2 - Portela
10 - Apresentacao da Bateria - Salgueiro
11 - Ensaio de Ritmos - Salgueiro
12 - Exibicoes da Bateria - Mangueira
13 - Ensaio de Ritmo - Mangueira
14 - Ensaio da Bateria - Mocidade

Paulinho - Prestige Apresenta Paulinho para Animar sua Festa (1959)

Hello, Good Evening! The recently discovered Prestige label is truly amazing. Tiny and obscure, their records have the best of instrumental music from the glory end of 50's and beginning of 60's decades. Prestige also used that trick of calling well-known artists to record nice albums under fake names, such as Musidisc did with Bob Fleming, which was in fact Moacyr Silva. Anyway, this is not about fake names, we have a real artist here, on another nice Prestige release.

This is Paulinho - Prestige Apresenta Paulinho para Animar Sua Festa (1959), for Prestige. The second Paulinho album was presented a month ago and performed very well. Paulinho, also known as Paulinho Magalhaes, is the renowned musician who collaborated with Sergio Mendes, Bola Sete and many others. Personnel is not credited. Tracks include:

04 - Destino (Raul Sampaio / Ivo Santos) Deusa do Asfalto (Adelino Moreira) Fim de Estrada (Adelino Moreira) É Luxo Só (Ary Barroso / Luis Peixoto)

Walter Wanderley - Entre Nos (1964)

I don't have words to explain how good is this Walter Wanderley album that I had the chance to hear for the first time today. Although not available at Loronix, Entre Nos was not on my hunting list. Thanks Cesar Saldanha for pointing and thanks Caetano Rodrigues for making this fantastic contribution. The vinyl was on perfect condition and the conversion to digital was very well done. Caetano Rodrigues is the master of creating MDs from vinyl.

This is Walter Wanderley - Entre Nos (1964), for Philips. The name "Entre Nos" has a reason, this is the first Walter Wanderley album for Philips and the name Entre Nos (among us) is something like a celebration to the new artist on Philips cast. Philips gave everything to Walter Wanderley, he is backed his Conjunto and a not credited orchestra. The mix of organ and orchestra is really nice and Walter Wanderley Conjunto delivers an awesome Samba Jazz beat. You should not miss this one. Tracks include:

01 - Telefone (Roberto Menescal / Ronaldo Bôscoli)
02 - Berimbau (Baden Powell / Vinicius de Moraes)
03 - Samba das Cores (Wilma Camargo)

Rosa Passos - Recriacao (1979)

Several friends have been requesting this repost for months and I decided to make it and take it to the top using our new "post moving website feature. Nobody should miss this album. For those who already have it, the improvements are on cover scans, music and new information on zecalouro's writing bellow, as follows:

Another late Loronix Debut, Rosa Passos, Brazilian singer, with her first LP never release on CD, Recriacao (1979). Rosa Passos started playing piano at the age of 3, she had everything ready for a piano career when at the age of 11, she listened to Joao Gilberto and her life has changed.

This is an amazing debut LP; all songs are Rosa Passos compositions in partnership with the poet Fernando de Oliveira. Joao Gilberto influence is very strong on Rosa's performance, she even mention Joao at the first song of this debut LP. Tracks include:
