Antonio Carlos Jobim e Vinicius de Moraes - Brasilia | Sinfonia da Alvorada (1961)

Hello, good morning! This post demanded a lot of work and I'm convinced the effort really worth. Actually, this is the repost of an already released album at Loronix. I spoke with Caetano Rodrigues about this album and the way he came to my hand and he could not believe on everything I said. Caetano said he took ten years hunting this LP until he got it on a quite an expensive price.

He said also that is not easy to get it with the booklet made available here with the music and by the scrolling panorama bellow. The booklet features instructions on how to perform the Symphony, in Portuguese, English, French and a couple of other languages that I could not identify. Everything is upgraded, cover scans and music, including the FLAC format as an option. I'm making available my original writing with slight modifications. Let's see.

In October 06, 2006, zecalouro said:

In 1958, Juscelino Kubitschek, president of Brazil, asked Vinicius de Moraes and Antonio Carlos Jobim to compose a symphonic suite to be used at the opening ceremony of a city that was being built in the middle of Brazil to be the new capital in April 21st, 1960.

Antonio Carlos Jobim and Vinicius de Moraes spent a time at the new city before the inauguration to get around the place and get inspiration needed to such important mission. In spite of the symphony was composed timely, for unknown reasons, it was not performed on the inauguration day.

This is Antonio Carlos Jobim e Vinicius de Moraes - Brasilia | Sinfonia da Alvorada (1961), recorded in November 1960, at studio. Tom is conducting the orchestra with the participation of Radames Gnattali (piano), Vinicius de Moraes (words, poetry), Elizeth Cardoso (voice) and Os Cariocas (voices).

Sinfonia da Alvorada had the first live performance only in 1966 at the TV station Excelsior in Sao Paulo. Take a time to check the scrolling panorama below to see how front and back cover created by Oscar Niemeyer matches on a single image and the booklet already mentioned. Tracks include:

01 - O Planalto Deserto (Antonio Carlos Jobim and Vinicius de Moraes)
02 - O Homem (Antonio Carlos Jobim and Vinicius de Moraes)
03 - A Chegada dos Candangos (Antonio Carlos Jobim and Vinicius de Moraes)
04 - O Trabalho e a Construção (Antonio Carlos Jobim and Vinicius de Moraes)
05 - Coral (Antonio Carlos Jobim and Vinicius de Moraes)

Bossa Rio - Alegria! (1970)

We have been very formal in the last couple of days trying to understand the origins of Bossa Nova, making associations like scientists and delivering some complex music. Tomorrow is Saturday and it is time to make a short break. I said short break, because I like those Joao Gilberto discussions and the very old music we have been gathering to Loronix.

This album is one of the first made available at Loronix. He was there at the end of the row waiting for a rescue. However, he was not considered since a repost demand upgrades and I did not have this album. The panorama changed this week and I even made a challenge to identify musicians, very nice challenge with several friends participation until the final missing piece of the puzzle, solved by Mr. G. Let's see.

This is Bossa Rio - Alegria (1970), for Blue Thumb Records, the second and last Bossa Rio LP a Brazilian group produced by Sergio Mendes that cannot be taken by mistake as the instrumental only group also lead by Sergio Mendes, the Bossa Rio Sextet. Sergio Mendes has a strong influence on Bossa Rio, the group sounds like Sergio Mendes Brasil '66, but in my humble parrot opinion, Alegria is nicer to hear than any other Brasil '66 LP, perhaps the participation of part of Bossa Tres (Octavio Bailly Jr. and Ronie Mesquita), Manfredo Fest, Pery Ribeiro and Gracinha Leporacce, a very nice team. Tracks include:

Personnel

Ronie Mesquita
(drums)

Octavio Bailly Jr.
(bass)

Manfredo Fest
(keyboards)

Gracinha Leporacce & Pery Ribeiro
(vocals)

Dwight Dickerson
(piano)

Sergio Mendes
(producer)

Track List

01 - Spinning Wheel (D. Thomas)
02 - Zazueira (Jorge Ben "Jorge Benjor")
03 - Girl Talk (B. Troup / N. Hefti)
04 - The Night Has a Thousand Eyes (B. Weisman / D. Wayne / M. Garrett)
05 - Que Pena (Jorge Ben "Jorge Benjor")
06 - With You Love Now (Mustang Cor de Sangue) (Marcos Valle / Paulo Sergio Valle / Vrs. Norman Gimbel)
07 - Open You Arms (Andança) (Danilo Caymmi / Edmundo Souto / Paulinho Tapajós / Vrs. Jay Livingston / Vrs. R. Evans)
08 - Eleanor Rigby (John Lennon / Paul McCartney)

Arthur Moreira Lima - Com Licenca... (1981)

Since I started Loronix I have been thinking about posting this album. Being open and honest, I decided on making it today in response of the feedback given to the last Arthur Moreira Lima release, the first at Loronix, a contribution by AdHoc, the contributor that really rocks. AdHoc contribution was the first album recorded by Arthur Moreira Lima, totally dedicated to Ernest Nazareth compositions. This time, Arthur delivers a completely different record, less formal and featuring compositions by popular Brazilian artists, such like: Paulo Moura, Laercio de Freitas, Elomar, Heraldo do Monte, among others. Let's see.

This is Arthur Moreira Lima - Com Licenca... (1981), for Kuarup, a piano solo album recorded at Sala Cecilia Meirelles, Rio de Janeiro. According with the back cover, there was no audience and Sala Cecilia Meirelles was used by the acoustics. I would like to post a video, but my searches for a single one had failured. It is disappointing, when I was young, it was common to watch Arthur Moreira Lima performances on Brazilian TV and seems that nobody recorded a single one. Arthur Moreira Lima said that a musician called Mestre Horondino Silva has an important participation at Subindo ao Ceu giving hints on how make the "baixaria" (bass lines). Horondino Silva is also known as Dino 7 Cordas, a great Brazilian musician that never had a chance of recording a solo LP. Tracks include:

01 - Flor Amorosa (Joaquim Callado)
02 - La Brésilienne (Henrique Alves de Mesquita)
03 - Despertar da Montanha (Eduardo Souto)
04 - Fandangoso (Laércio de Freitas)
05 - Carinhoso (Pixinguinha)
06 - Gaúcho (Chiquinha Gonzaga)
07 - Mão Esquerda (Paulo Moura)
08 - Subindo ao Céu (Aristides Borges)
09 - O Cabo Pitanga (Laércio de Freitas)
10 - Seresta Sertaneza (Elomar)
11 - Chuva Morna (Heraldo do Monte)

Orlando Silva - Carinhoso (1959)

Hello, good evening! Let's start this Friday moving forward that idea of showing early Bossa Nova and performers that have influenced Bossa Nova. I was reading yesterday a book that everybody should read, Caetano Veloso - Verdade Tropical. Caetano said Orlando Silva is one of his strongest influences and he can be considered as a disciple. The same applies to Joao Gilberto as we could hear on that 78rpm with Joao Gilberto performing on a style very close to Orlando Silva. Caetano Veloso also said that Orlando Silva peak was in the late 30's and early 40's, and this is what we have available at this essential record, being reposted with upgrades on everything. Let's see.

This is Orlando Silva - Carinhoso (1959), for RCA Victor, featuring new recordings of Orlando Silva repertoire taken from 1935 and 1942 78rpm. RCA Victor released this album as part of the company 25th anniversary and sold it very much, being also very well received among the reviewers of that time. In fact, an anthological album with a nice repertoire selection with Orlando Silva singing with a different voice from his early years, but still fantastic.

I'm making available three original 78rpm Orlando Silva recordings of Carinhoso (1937), Aos Pes da Cruz (1942) and Labios que Beijei (1942), so we can check how Orlando Silva interpretation changed. By the way, these original 78rpm tracks are really nice. Tracks include:

01 - Carinhoso (Pixinguinha / João de Barro) - 1937 (*)
02 - Lágrimas (Cândido das Neves "Índio") - 1935
03 - Mágoas de Caboclo (Leonel Azevedo / J. Cascata) - 1939
04 - Amigo Leal (Benedito Lacerda / Aldo Cabral) - 1937
05 - Súplica (Otávio Gabus Mendes / José Marcílio / Déo) - 1940
06 - Rosa (Pixinguinha / Otávio de Souza) - 1937
07 - Lábios Que Beijei (J. Cascata / Leonel Azevedo) - 1937 (*)
08 - Juramento Falso (J. Cascata / Leonel Azevedo) - 1937
09 - Aliança Partida (Benedito Lacerda / Roberto Martins) - 1937
10 - Aos Pés da Cruz (Marino Pinto / Zé da Zilda) - 1942 (*)
11 - Sinhá Maria (René Bittencourt)
12 - A Jardineira (Benedito Lacerda / Humberto Porto) - 1938

(*) also available as original 78rpm recordings, here (direct link).

Hermeto Pascoal e Grupo - Lagoa da Canoa, Municipio de Arapiraca (1984)

Someone said here a great thing about Hermeto Pascoal, it was a Loronixer, I cannot remember whom. He said Hermeto was the real Brazilian music ambassador, it is a very nice statement and I totally agree. AdHoc, the frequent FLAC contributor sent this album in a very good timing, taking advantage of the last Airto Moreira post with participation of Hermeto Pascoal. Let's see.

This is Hermeto Pascoal e Grupo - Lagoa da Canoa, Municipio de Arapiraca (1984), for Som da Gente, featuring Hermeto Pascoal and the constellation of top-notch musicians assembled as "Grupo", which is Hermeto Pascoal as I like most. AdHoc sent to us a 1992 CD reissue with a different cover and some additional tracks not included in the first vinyl issue. I can't decide which cover I like most; Hermeto Pascoal photos are always amazing. What a nice album, it was a surprise to hear 04 - Papagaio Alegre with Hermeto e Grupo making on recording something that I use to do with zecalouro for leisure; they mix a parrot talking with the music. I'm thinking about recording some cuts with zecalouro to show Loronixers. Meanwhile, stay with this truly amazing Lagoa da Canoa, Municipio de Arapicara, which is the name of city where Hermeto Pascoal was born (Lagoa da Canoa), later changed to Municipio de Arapiraca. Tracks include:

Personnel

Hermeto Pascoal
(flute, picolo, piano, harmonica, accordion, guitar, clarinet, oboe, sax, cavaquinho, etc.)
Jovino Santos Neto
(piano, keyboards)
Carlos Malta
(flute, sax tenor, sax soprano)
Itibere Zwarg
(bass, tuba)
Marcio Bahia
(drums, percussion)
Pernambuco
(percussion)

Track List

01 - Ilza na Feijoada (Hermeto Pascoal)
02 - Santa Catarina (Hermeto Pascoal)
03 - Tiruliruli (Hermeto Pascoal)
04 - Papagaio Alegre (Hermeto Pascoal)
05 - Vai Mais Garotinho (Hermeto Pascoal)

Challenge | Who are they?

While our engineers struggle to remedy technical problems, I'm making available this easy and nice challenge. Your mission is just the identification of the Brazilian musicians and singers in the panorama.

Hope uEnjoy!

Paulinho e Seu Conjunto - Para Animar Sua Festa Nr. 3 (1960)

Hello, good evening! I thought everything was really fine for a great night today, but my hosting (a very important and invisible service for Loronix daily operation) is having an outage tonight. They say a fix is coming and if the problem persists we will be very limited today. The alternative is to prepare the posts today instead of getting ready and tested stuff already available. Anyway, that's exactly what I did right now, called zecalouro to spin and rip one of his favorites in the "Para Dancar" style, which is the third album released by Paulinho Magalhaes for Prestige label. Let's see.

This is Paulinho e Seu Conjunto - Para Animar Sua Festa Nr. 3 (1960), for Prestige. Refreshing our memory, Paulinho is the drummer of Bola Sete Trio on "Autentico" years, being also the drummer of some early Sergio Mendes albums in the US as Paulinho Magalhaes. Para Animar Sua Festa Nr. 3 features a repertoire organized by four different blocks, "Boleros e Cha Cha Cha", "Sambas e Teleco Teco", "Baladas Rock" e "Sambas" with a total of 16 songs. Tracks include:

BOLEROS E CHA CHA CHA
01 - Abrazame Asi (M. Clavell)
02 - Nancy (Bruno Arelli / Luis Lacerda)
03 - Tea For Two (Irving Caesar / V. Youmans)
04 - The Continental (C. Conrad / H. Magidson)

SAMBAS E TELECO TECO
05 - Meu Romance (J. Cascata)

08 - Teleco Teco Nº 2 (Nelsinho / Oldemar Magalhães)

BALADAS E ROCK

13 - Se Acaso Você Chegasse (Lupicínio Rodrigues / Felisberto Martins)
14 - Não Tenho Lágrimas (Max Bulhões / Milton de Oliveira)
15 - Cae Cae (Roberto Martins)
16 - Está Chegando a Hora (Rubens Campos / Henricão)

Turma da Gafieira - Samba em HIFI (1957)

Do not let this cover cheats you, this is a really nice cover, but it don't gives a hint of the music we have inside. I think this is the reason for being listed by R$ 3 at a vinyl store. When I saw the cover and read the album title, I took some minutes to make the right association with the first issue of Samba em HI-FI from Turma da Gafieira, a incredible band of great musicians that recorded only two albums in the late 50's.

This is Turma da Gafieira - Samba em HI-FI (1957), for Musidisc. I never thought about reposting this album and I could only believe it was possible when I arrived home and put it for a first spin. The media is perfect and I could not identify the correct date of this reissue. If I were in charge of it, I would make a different cover, keeping the nice girl and highlighting the musicians. Tracks include:

Personnel

Altamiro Carrilho
(flute)
Ze Bodega
(sax tenor)
Maestro Cipo
(sax tenor)
Raul de Souza "Raulzinho"
(trombone)
Baden Powell
(guitar)

(bass)
Edison Machado
(drums)

Dora Lopes - Testamento (1974)

It is really nice when an artist that I never heard about comes to my hand with the help of Loronix community. And I get really surprised when a friend out of Brazil introduces a new artist to us. Meet Dora Lopes, kindly sent by the legendary Mr. G. that highly recommends this record. Dora Lopes is not a singer that recorded only one album and disappears; she was a well-known singer at Copacabana nightclubs, being also a great composer. Thanks once again Mr. G.

This is Dora Lopes - Testamento (1974), for RGE, featuring a repertoire with compositions by her own. In spite of the very sad lyrics, this is a great album, Dora Lopes sings nicely and is backed by renowned musicians, such like Poly, Heraldo do Monte, Boneca, Bolao and a nice rhythm section in charge of the obscure Os Embaixadores do Samba. Personnel listing is very long and you will find it inside the music. Sorry, I got additional time and is now available bellow. Tracks include:

Trio Irakitan - Outros Boleros que Gostamos de Cantar (1961)

Hello, good evening! I'm having a nice evening. It's raining in Rio de Janeiro. I cannot remember the last time we had a rain falling. I'm in the mood of getting out to walk in the rain, but I'm too old for such thing, better stay home with Loronixers and avoid a flu or something.

I received today a email message from a friend saying that Loronix was too much focused on instrumental music with few releases of boys and girls singing. I will try to query Loronix Find It to get an answer from a broader perspective. Anyway, I decided to make not only a singer, but a whole vocal group that we do not release at Loronix since 2006, Trio Irakitan. Let's see.

This is Trio Irakitan - Outros Boleros que Gostamos de Cantar (1961), for Odeon, presented here by an Imperial reissue, which is that Odeon subsidiary that sold records using direct sales. Trio Irakitan has a discography that span decades with several recording releases and they are still active, in spite of the unacceptable passing of Edinho, which is the guy in the center, that committed suicide in 1965. Trio Irakitan performs a repertoire based on Boleros and I think it is a nice choice to start this raining Wednesday. Tracks include:

01 - Pecadora (Agustin Lara / Vrs. Geber Moreira)
02 - Marimba (Agustin Lara / Vrs. Sivan Castelo Neto)
03 - Traiçoeira (Traicionera) (Gonzalo Curiel / Vrs. Mário Mendes)
04 - Caminhando Caminhando (Caminando Caminando) (O. Farres / Vrs. Manelo Silva)
05 - Final (Sans Vous) (Paul Misraki / A. Homez / B. Molar / Vrs. Ariovaldo Pires)
06 - Novamente Virás (Se Muy Bien Que Vendras) (A. Nunez / Vrs. Manolo Silva)
07 - Dorme (Duerme) (M. Prado / L. de La Fuente / Vrs. Manolo Silva)
08 - Nocturnal (J. S. Marroquin / Vrs. Édson França)
09 - Duas Almas (Dos Almas) (D. Fabián / Vrs. Evaldo Ruy)
10 - Hipócrita (C. Crespo / Vrs. Paulo Gilvan)
11 - Pecado (C. Bah / Enrique Francini / A. Pontier / Vrs. Paulo Gilvan)
12 - Vereda Tropical (Gonzalo Curiel / Vrs. Paulo Gilvan)
