Claudio Santoro - Preludios e Cancoes de Amor (1989)

Hello, good evening! Let's start today showing a tribute album released by Coca Cola company to an artist never approached before at Loronix, which is Maestro Claudio Santoro, a very important musician that influenced renowned Brazilian popular artists, such like Antonio Carlos Jobim and Radames Gnattali. Claudio Santoro was a very prolific composer, leaving nine symphonies, three piano concertos and seven string quartets. He died in the city of Brasilia on the March 1989, while conducting the rehearsal of an orchestra. I urge Loronixers to visit the official Claudio Santoro website, owned and maintained by Alessandro Santoro, it truly one of the best tribute website I have ever seen to a musician, featuring both Portuguese and English section, at http://www.claudiosantoro.art.br.

This is Claudio Santoro - Preludios e Cancoes de Amor (1989), sponsored by Coca Cola company and never made available commercially, only distributed to customers as part of 1989 Christmas celebrations. Elizeth Cardoso & Cyro Monteiro - A Bossa Eterna de Elizeth e Cyro (1966)

We spent a time today talking about each other preferences on Brazilian music and singers and I did not get surprised to hear from friends that Elizeth Cardoso is a favorite singer of everybody. People also says that Loronix was of a great help to drive attention to Elizeth and create a new demand and from my point of view, this is truly awesome. I include myself on this category, before Loronix I had a great respect for the Divina and now I'm a big fan. I could not make different today, except closing this beautiful Sunday with the great Elizeth Cardoso and Cyro Monteiro. Let's see.

This is Elizeth Cardoso & Cyro Monteiro - A Bossa Eterna de Elizeth e Cyro (1966), for Copacabana, with Elizeth Cardoso, Cyro Monteiro and O Regional do Caculinha, performing in the repertoire of their Bossaudade TV show. If this Bossaudade TV show presented by the duo had the same atmosphere of this album, it should be a really great entertainment, the performances are great and Caculinha delivers a nice accompaniment with his Regional, making another Elizeth Cardoso album that really worth checking out. Now I understand why AdHoc has been requesting this album for such a long time. Tracks include:

01 - Nega (Waldemar Gomes / Afonso Teixeira) - Faço Um Lê Lê Lê (Luis Reis / Haroldo Barbosa) - Dance Mais Um Bocado (Henricão / Príncipe Pretinho) - Deixa Andar (Jujuba) - Já Vai (Rubens Campos / Duba)

Walter Franco - Vela Aberta (1980)

Hello, good evening! I spent a great afternoon today with the very good friends of Jobimaniacos, which is a very active community of Maestro Antonio Carlos Jobim fans at Orkut, the most popular social network website in Brazil. They were celebrating the end of 2007 and I was invited to participate. We spoke about several things and I received several requests that I will try to address in the forthcoming days.

Anyway, I would like to start with this one, requested by the great Irinea, wife of Luiz Moreno, drummer of the Brazilian progressive band O Terco. Irinea was looking for a Walter Franco album that has O Terco as accompaniment group. I thought it was this one and I'm still in doubt about it since Vela Aberta brings Sergio Hinds, O Terco guitarist. Forgive me Irinea if I'm wrong, but this album is really worth checking and Walter Franco is also an awaited artist that never had an album made available at Loronix. Let's see.

This is Walter Franco - Vela Aberta (1980), for Epic/Columbia, the forth album of this unique singer, composer and musician that always makes challenging records, blending different styles and bringing several different influences. Vela Aberta is not an exception, it is an album that you will need several spins until you get used to it. Let's use comments section to feedback the first Walter Franco release at Loronix. Tracks include:

Chico Buarque - Meus Caros Amigos (1976)

Here we have a truly awesome album, easily on any top ten listing of Brazilian popular music records from the 70's. I had a great time listening Meus Caros Amigos today, and it was not necessary to spin it to remember theses songs, they were all inside my head, including arrangements. It is also unbelievable that has gone out of print at Amazon.com. Loronix does not have much from Chico Buarque and I'm really happy to include this fantastic album on our archives.

This is Chico Buarque - Meus Caros Amigos (1976), for Philips. It is not necessary to understand Portuguese to get the most from this album, recorded while Chico Buarque was exiled from Brazil and brings a strong and very intelligent dissatisfaction message to Brazilian dictatorship government of that time. This is the kind of album where everything really goes right, from the repertoire selection to the arrangements in charge of Francis Hime, Luiz Claudio Ramos and Perinho Albuquerque, leading a constellation of Brazilian musicians. Tracks include:

Turma da Pilantragem - O Som da Pilantragem Nr. 2 (1969)

Hello! Good evening! I want to start this Saturday night with a repost dedicated to a very good Loronixer, her name is Candida Pires, from Rio de Janeiro and now living in Lisbon, Portugal. Candida is a big fan of the folks from Turma da Pilantragem and she asked for this repost a long time ago. I took me a lot of time until I find this album and I totally agree with Candida, the first issue was a real shame, scratchy and even annoying. Now we have improved cover scans, better ripping and the FLAC files alternative. I'm delivering the original text with slight modifications on style. Let's see.

This is Turma da Pilantragem - O Som da Pilantragem Nr. 2 (1969), for Polydor, the third LP from this legendary group lead by Nonato Buzar and featuring several artists, such as: Regininha, Dorinha Tapajós, Edinho, Malu, Fernando, Altair, Antonio Adolfo, Durval Ferreira, among many others. Instrumental arrangements are in charge of Antonio Adolfo with vocal arrangements by Severino Filho from Os Cariocas. Personnel listing is breathtaking from start to end including Ed Maciel, the already mentioned Durval Ferreira, Raul de Barros, Juarez and many others. Tracks include:

Dolores Duran - A Noite de Dolores (1960)

Loronix last Dolores Duran album was a compilation released by Copacabana as part of their 30th anniversary celebration featuring Dolores Duran performances with new orchestral arrangements. We have been discussing how controversial is the introduction of new things on top of old and classical recording and I said that it would be better if Copacabana kept the original material instead of adding new elements. It is an amazing coincidence to find this album in the middle of this week, since it is exactly what Copacabana would make on the celebration album released in 1979, original Dolores Duran recordings. Now we have the awaited original recordings by Dolores Duran. Let's see.

This is Dolores Duran - A Noite de Dolores (1960), for Copacabana, featuring original Dolores Duran recordings. This is really worth checking, instead of well-known Dolores Duran compositions, the repertoire brings some obscure songs with Dolores Duran singing lyrics in Portuguese, French and Spanish. I think Copacabana took this amazing cover as the inspiration to the 1979 tribute, using the same flower theme, and this is the only thing in common with both releases. Maestros Mozart Brandao, Lindolpho Gaya, Pachequinho and Norbert Schultz are the arrangers, as indicated on track list. Tracks include:

01 - Carioca 1954 (Antonio Maria / Ismael Neto)
02 - Ave Maria Lola (Sergio G. Siaba)
03 - Sinceridad (O. Perez)
04 - Nigraj Manteloj (Coimbra) (Raul Ferrao / Jose Galhardo)

09 - No Other Love (Oscar Hammerstein II / Richard Rodgers)
10 - Ojos Verdes (Valverde / Leon / Quiroga)
11 - My Funny Valentine (R. Rodgers / L. Hart)
12 - Nossos Destinos (Luiz Vieira)

Pery Ribeiro | Luiz Eca - Pra Tanto Viver (1986)

I agree with cvllos when he says this is one of the top ten albums available at Loronix and deserve a better approach. That's what I'm doing write now, improving each aspect of this fantastic record. FLAC files are now available, hi-res cover scans from front and back cover are being included, the additional info requested last year is now available with complete personnel listing and that sad problem with track 12 - Cancao que Morre no Ar is over. I agree that classics like this one deserves a reposting, however, these albums are really hard to find in an affordable price for my resources. Anyway, it does not matter, I had a great time hearing this album today and I'm sure you will have a high quality listening experience here. Let's see.

This is Pery Ribeiro | Luiz Eca - Pra Tanto Viver (1986), for Continental. Pery Ribeiro and Luiz Eca were really connected to each other at this great session. I'm also sure this is the best Pery Ribeiro album I have heard and probably one of the best Luiz Eca performances on recording. Take this album as a very special record; I think it never had a CD reissue, which is something hard to believe. Tracks include:

Guimaraes e Seu Conjunto - Dancando com Papai Noel (1959)

Hello! Good Evening! This is the perfect example of a cover artwork that worth the entire album, no matter the music available inside. I have been looking at this cover the whole day and I cannot stop laugh on each new finding, just a couple of examples: 1) Why the guy is fixing the Christmas tree while Papai Noel (Santa Claus) is dancing with his wife?! What is the feeling of the daughter when she looks at her mother dancing with Papai Noel? I think she is astonished and proud of her. And what a weird Papai Noel they found to make this cover, thin, tall and with an unusual reclined position. Anyway, let's see what Guimaraes e Seu Conjunto delivers in terms of Christmas songs.

This is Guimaraes e Seu Conjunto - Dancando com Papai Noel (1959), for Internacional, featuring instrumental renditions of Brazilian and international Christmas songs in the Para Dancar style. I found this album inside the envelope and I'm very happy to be the first to spin it for the first time after 49 years. Tracks include:

11 - Natal Noite de Amor (Aldo Taranto)
12 - Natal de Nossa Terra (Homero Gelmini)

Gal Costa - Gal Canta Caymmi (1976)

Gal Costa performing Dorival Caymmi repertoire with arrangements by Joao Donato, Perinho Albuquerque and a constellation of top-notch Brazilian musicians. It is a nice introduction that explains everything about this album. I can remember this record when released in 1976; it helped a lot to make Dorival Caymmi music popular for a whole generation. Songs like 03 - Nem Eu and 07 - So Louco, especially this last one, had their definitive version with Gal Costa. Let's see.

This is Gal Costa - Gal Canta Caymmi (1976), for Philips, featuring ten selected Dorival Caymmi songs, produced by Perinho Albuquerque with arrangements by Perinho Albuquerque and Joao Donato. I got really excited this time and said everything at the first paragraph. Tracks include:

Hello, good evening! After a long hiatus, here we go on a record in the "Para Dancar" style, courtesy of Mauro R.V., very good friend of zecalouro and a gifted hunter.
