Edison Penha e Altamir Penha - Violoes em HI-FI (1966)

Someone shout last week for more records of the legendary Farroupilha label, recognized for his excellence on recording quality and above the average releases. There is another attribute, Farroupilha albums are in general very hard to find, and perhaps the reason for making their records sought after by collectors. Maybe I'm wrong, Caetano sent to us one of the impossible to find, requested by many collectors at Loronix since the very first beginning. Let's see.

This is Edison Penha e Altamir Penha - Violoes em HI-FI (1966), for Farroupilha. Little I knew about this album, I thought it was a violao only record performed by a duo, but they are backed by Airto Moreira (drums), Azeitona and Zezinho (bass) in some tracks. In spite of playing a really nice guitar, Edison and Altamir Penha are not musicians, they own an industry, Companhia Penha de Maquinas Agricolas and probably never had the chance (or decided) to record another album. I think the mystery of this obscure album and these obscure guys has gone to a term with this post. I will now let with you. Tracks include.

Joao Roberto Kelly e Os Pagodeiros Nota 10 - Um Piano Sobe o Morro (1973)

Hello, Good Evening! Saturday is Samba at Loronix and I have been receiving only good thoughts from Loronixers regarding this initiative. Samba fans are very knowledgeable and they like to share, write comments and discuss Samba. I have been learning a lot with our great Samba friends. This also brings a great responsibility to make nice releases and I think this is a flawless one. Let's see.

This is Joao Roberto Kelly e Os Pagodeiros Nota 10 - Um Piano Sobe o Morro (1973), for Tapecar. I never heard about Os Pagodeiros Nota 10 before and I think they did not make solo releases; perhaps they are part of Joao Roberto Kelly TV Show in the 70's as support band. Um Piano Sobe o Morro has the TV show atmosphere, with Joao Roberto Kelly dedicating songs and also making comments on songwriters. Tracks include:

01 - Ninguém Tasca (O Gavião) (Mário Pereira / João Quadrado)
02 - Tem Capoeira (É Bom Segurar) (Batista da Mangueira)

Apolo 11 - Apolo 11 (1969)

Hello, Good Evening! Let's start the day with a great contribution by Marcelo Munhoz, the mighty leader of Sambasonics and one of the well-known musicians we have at Loronix. Marcelo Munhoz delivers to us an album that I have been tracking down for months, a very hard to find record released by the tiny Northeast label JS Discos. This should make the day of several friends. Let's see.

This is Apolo 11 - Apolo 11 (1969), for JS Discos, featuring Maria Creuza, Antonio Carlos Marques, the same Antonio Carlos from Antonio Carlos e Jocafi duo and Tuti Moreno. Really nice find sponsored by Marcelo Munhoz, the last time I saw this album was in Sao Paulo for an impossible to afford price. Let's feedback this most wanted release by several Loronixers. Tracks include:

Maria Creuza
(voice)

Luiz Eça - Luiz Eça Trio (1991)

I don't know how many friends knew this LP existence. I was introduced to this album today, made available by Caetano Rodrigues on his last set of contributions to our community. Thanks once again, Caetano! Perhaps I'm a lazy parrot and did not a good job on identifying Luiz Eca discography. This album was produced and probably sponsored by Pacifico Mascarenhas, all 20 songs available are Pacifico Mascarenhas compositions. Luiz Eca Trio was recorded in May 1991 and Luiz Eca has passed in May 1992. Probably, these are the last Luiz Eca studio recordings.

This is Luiz Eca - Luiz Eca Trio (1991), for Velas, featuring Luiz Eca (piano), Luiz Alves (bass) and Ricardo Costa (drums). The release date on some discographies shows the year of 1995. Caetano said Pacifico Mascarenhas recorded this album to help Luiz Eca with medical expenses. I think there was no reason to keep this music unreleased until 1995, as Pacifico Mascarenhas idea was helping Luiz Eca. Anyway, the clarification and additional information on Luiz Eca Trio should come from our community. Tracks include:

Personnel

Luiz Eca
(piano, musical direction, executive direction, arrangements)

Luiz Alves
(bass)
Ricardo Costa
(drums)

Pacifico Mascarenhas
(production)

Track List

Everybody is saying the Conjunto Farroupilha EP released two weeks ago was a great find. I agree. The music inside that little record is great with very well done instrumental and vocal arrangements. Varios Artistas - The Vocal Groups Happen to Bossa Nova

Hello, Good Evening! Starting with a great announcement, which is the arrival of another set of contribution by Caetano Rodrigues. I think Loronixers were missing the always-nice music Caetano provides. I was missing and Caetano sent several surprises this time, such as this compilation prepared by him featuring several vocal groups and their renditions to Bossa Nova standards. Let's see.

This is The Vocal Groups Happen to Bossa Nova - A Compilation by Caetano Rodrigues, featuring 17 Bossa Nova standards performed by The HI-LO's, The Gals and Pals, The Manhattan Transfer, The Freshman, among many other vocal groups. Maria Creuza - Sessao Nostalgia (1974)

Our friend Justin says as a mantra: "RCA Victor mid 70's releases are killer". Justin, I think you are right, RCA Victor delivers top-notch resources to most of the artists that recorded there during this period. Maria Creuza is a perfect example; she has more than a few releases for RCA Victor in the 70's. I did not give much attention to Justin mantra and now I admit that I wasting time. Thanks Justin and make yourself ready for another great session at RCA Victor studios in Brazil.

This is Maria Creuza - Sessao Nostalgia (1974), for RCA Victor. It is really very hard to resist to the sweet voice of Maria Creuza and RCA Victor production. Sessao Nostalgia has a nice repertoire selection based on tunes tunes from the 60's, two compositions by Antonio Carlos Jobim and Vinicius de Moraes and nice songs from Cartola, Nelson Cavaquinho, Noel Rosa, Lupiscinio Rodrigues, among others. The team of arrangers and personnel listing is a must. Tracks include:

Luiz Arruda Paes e Sua Orquestra - Brasil Dia e Noite (1957)

Just back from Panorama, a very nice place to small concerts such like the great performance of Irinea Maria and her very special guests Clarisse Grova, Celia Vaz, Marcio Proenca, Suely Correa, the fantastic vocal group Nos Quatro, Luiza (yes, Luiza!) and many others this parrot cannot remember. Wonderful night. Thanks Irinea!

A wonderful night deserves a mandatory repost of a magnificent album, one of those that I like most at Loronix, Luiz Arruda Paes e Sua Orquestra - Brasil Dia e Noite (1957) with everything improved, high quality cover scans, new ripping and FLAC files alternative. I'm keeping my original writing made in October 2006 with minor improvements, as follows:

There is a team of great Brazilian arrangers such like Lindolfo Gaya, Lyrio Panicali and many others that we had the chance to know at Loronix. We cannot keep out of this list Maestro Luiz Arruda Paes, presented here with the LP Luiz Arruda Paes e Sua Orquestra - Brasil Dia e Noite (1957).

Luiz Arruda Paes is an artist that has been receiving several requests by Loronixers since the beginning. Luiz Arruda Paes LPs are hard to track down, at least for zecalouro. Luiz Arruda Paes has a great importance and deserves a special position on any Brazilian music reservoir. Anyway, I will leave you free to get along with Luiz Arruda Paes. Tracks include:

01 - Aquarela do Brasil (Ary Barroso)
02 - Copacabana (João de Barro / Alberto Ribeiro)
03 - Samba Que Eu Quero Ver (Djalma Ferreira)

Milton Banana Trio - Samba é Isso (1977)

I had several IT problems tonight and the last post, an album never released before at Loronix, was postponed. For a reason that I don't know yet, I cannot upload new content to my hosting service. Anyway, I cannot upload new content, but I can use what was already uploaded.

I feel great for making this album in advance; it is a repost of a very old share released for the first time in August 04, 2006. Everything is being upgraded, the music, FLAC files alternative and high quality cover scans. I'm making available the text written a year before with minor cosmetic adjustments. Let's see.

This is Milton Banana Trio - Samba e Isso (1977), for RCA Pure Gold, the first of a series of albums titled "Samba E Isso". There is a nice and not credited female voice singing a repertoire of 24 tunes arranged in pairs of twelve tracks. Maestro Jose Briamonte is in charge of arrangements. Tracks include:

Moacyr Silva e Seu Conjunto - Dancando com Voce Nr. 2 (1957)

We never go wrong with Moacyr Silva, the legendary tenor sax, arranger and producer of fantastic albums in the 60's for Copacabana label, most of them for the great Diva Elizeth Cardoso. The bossanovadreamer sent to us the second Moacyr Silva career album, featuring Chaim Lewak and Dom Um Romao. Now it is time to zecalouro share with Loronixers his third career LP and the first at the 12-inch format.

By the way, in spite of several Moacyr Silva albums made available at Loronix, there are several ones missing. The picture in the right is a perfect example, revealed by Trix, this is a 1969 Copacabana 7-inch featuring The Jordans & Moacyr Silva, a real treat. Unfortunately, it is only available at e-Bay with a price I cannot afford.

This is Moacyr Silva e Seu Conjunto - Dancando com Voce Nr. 2 (1957), for Copacabana. Little I know about this very early Moacyr Silva album, personnel listing is not available and perhaps we have the same musicians of bossanovadreamer 10-inch. Tracks include:

01 - On The Street Where You Live (A. J. Lerner / F. Loewe)
02 - I Could Have Danced All Night (A. J. Lerner / F. Loewe)

11 - Jacyra (Moacir Silva)
12 - Só Com Você Eu Tenho Paz (Pereira dos Santos / Avarese)
13 - Da Cor do Pecado (Bororó)

Sylvio Mazzucca e Sua Orquestra - Isto e Samba (1972)

Hello, Good Evening! It is time to say goodbye to one of the best records available at Loronix at the front page. Perhaps I could leave Joao Gilberto as the first post for a week or so with the new entrants just bellow. Anyway, show must go on and the show is just starting this Tuesday. Here we go on a really above the average orchestra LP, released in 1972 and featuring a Maestro never released at Loronix. Let's see.

This is Sylvio Mazzucca e Sua Orquestra - Isto e Samba (1972), for Continental. Perhaps I'm wrong, but I cannot remember an album in the style released in the 70's and Maestro Sylvio Mazzucca did a great job, avoiding Bossa Nova standards and selecting a repertoire based on popular tunes from the early 70's. Isto e Samba is solid from the start until the end, dancing and takes advantage of percussion instruments blended nicely with standard orchestra instruments. Tracks include:

01 - Encabulada (Antonio Carlos / Jocafi)
02 - Mangueira, Minha Querida Madrinha (tengo tengo) (Zuzuca)
03 - Samba de Orly (Vinicius de Moraes / Chico Buarque / Toquinho)

11 - Segure Tudo (Martinho da Vila)
12 - Independencia ou Morte (Jose Di)

Sexteto Prestige - Musica e Festa Nr. 4 (1959)

Hello, Good Evening! Let's start this rainy Monday in Rio de Janeiro with another Para Dancar release, featuring a group that had a great feedback from Loronixers by the first time it was made available, which is Sexteto Prestige, with their group of not credited and so far unknown musicians. Let's see.

This is Sexteto Prestige - Musica e Festa Nr. 4 (1959), for Prestige. So far, I could track down eight albums by Sexteto Prestige and their Musica e Festa series, from this Series I have six and there are two missing. I have been taking them for a hearing with zecalouro and this is the one I like most. This is one of those Para Dancar albums that do not have tracks separations; actually, the repertoire has 17 songs grouped on four blocks. Tracks include:

01 - História (Fernando César / Luis Cláudio)
02 - Perfume de Gardênia (R. Hernandez)
03 - Caixa Postal Zero Zero (Luis de França / Oscar Bellandi)

17 - Tédio (Nazareno de Brito / Fernando César)

Nara Leao - Meus Sonhos Dourados (1987)

This is one of the albums I could bring to Loronix from daddy's place on Dia dos Pais visit. We took it for a hearing in the afternoon and we had a wonderful time together remembering these standards adapted by Nara Leao and other Brazilian artists, such like, Aloysio de Oliveira, Carlos Colla, Paulo Sergio Valle, Pacifico Mascarenhas and others. Meus Sonhos Dourados has some sadness in the background, perhaps for being one of the last Nara Leao albums, but it is beautiful and solid from the start until the end.

This is Nara Leao - Meus Sonhos Dourados (1987), for Philips, featuring Nara Leao and Roberto Menescal performing the repertoire of their childhood in Copacabana with Portuguese lyrics and Bossa Nova rhythm. I forgot to mention at the introduction, there is a lot of Roberto Menescal here, producing the album, arranging, playing and probably selecting the repertoire with Nara Leao. Check the back cover scan for a picture of Nara Leao and Roberto Menescal at Copacabana beach in the 50's, they were friends since the age of eleven and this picture was probably taken when they were bellow eighteen. Nara Leao is the best way to start the week in a very nice mood. Tracks include:

01 - Eu Gosto Mais do Rio (How About You) (Lane / Freed / Vrs. Pacífico Mascarenhas) - with excerpts of "Ela É Carioca" (Tom Jobim / Vinicius de Morais) and "Garota De Ipanema" (Tom Jobim / Vinicius de Morais)

07 - Além do Arco-íris (Over The Rainbow) (Arlen / Harburg / Vrs. Nara Leão)
08 - Aqui no Mesmo Bar (As Time Goes By) (Hupfeld / Vrs. Edmundo Souto)
09 - Coisas Que Lembram Você (These Foolishing Things) (Stracey / Marvell / Link / Vrs. Aloysio de Oliveira)
10 - Me Abraça (Embraceable You) (George Gershwin / Ira Gershwin / Vrs. Nara Leão)
11 - Como Vai Você (What's New) (Haggart / Burke / Vrs. Nara Leão)

I Loronix EPs Festival - Elizeth Cardoso, Doris Monteiro & Elizabeth

I Loronix Singles Festival was a blockbuster, why not making another one for EPs? That's the idea of this post, I Loronix EPs Festival, featuring only female singers. I think this one is a real treat, it starts classic with Elizeth Cardoso, visiting Doris Monteiro, a favorite of several Loronixers and ending with the amazing Elizabeth. zecalouro ripped Elizeth Cardoso, Trix made Doris Monteiro a couple of months ago and the great Moos sent Elizabeth and this truly amazing cover from The Netherlands. Samba Challenge | Who are these 8 Samba Legends?

Hello, Good Evening! We will have a late start this Sunday, Dia dos Pais was amazing, so amazing that I'm really tired. However, the show must go on and this challenge should make us very busy until the music starts flowing. Who are these eight Samba legends? Can you tell us?

Hope uEnjoy!

Dorival Caymmi - Caymmi (1972)

There was no better pick, Dorival Caymmi, an artist that influences all the others with no equivalents in Brazilian music. The "Caymmis" are many, Nana, Dori, Danilo, Stella and that is also Loronix celebration to Dia dos Pais, Father's Day in English. I had my first contact with this album this week, the others I know were recorded in the 50's and 60's and Dorival Caymmi is a very different artist here. Let's see.

This is Dorival Caymmi - Caymmi (1972), for Odeon. Caymmi is a very nice produced album with the orchestra touch of Maestro Lindolfo Gaya, which is also in charge of Musical Direction. Perhaps the influence of Jorge Amado -- who wrote liner notes and also delivers a composition, 13 - Canto de Oba (Dorival Caymmi / Jorge Amado) -- makes this album very influenced by the things from Bahia, specially Afro-Brazilian religions. The repertoire features some well know Dorival Caymmi songs such like Oracao de Mae Menininha, Rainha do Mar, Itapoan and others. Feliz dia dos Pais a todos os Loronixers do Brasil. Tracks include:

01 - Promessa de Pescador (Dorival Caymmi)
02 - Morena do Mar (Dorival Caymmi)
03 - Santa Clara Clareou (Dorival Caymmi)
04 - Canto de Nanã (Dorival Caymmi)
05 - Dona Chica (Francisca Santos das Flores) (Dorival Caymmi)
06 - Oração de Mãe Menininha (Dorival Caymmi)
07 - Eu Cheguei Lá (Dorival Caymmi)
08 - Sodade Matadeira (Dorival Caymmi)
09 - A Preta do Acarajé (Dorival Caymmi)
10 - Rainha do Mar (Dorival Caymmi)
11 - Vou Ver Juliana (Dorival Caymmi)
12 - Itapoã (Dorival Caymmi)
13 - Canto do Obá (Dorival Caymmi / Jorge Amado)

I Loronix Singles Festival - Oswaldo Nunes & The Pop's, Eva & Joao Roberto Kelly

This is the first edition of Loronix Singles Festival, just to save our time and make several singles accessible from a single (sorry!) download package. First edition has 3 artists, as follows:

Oswaldo Nunes & The Pop's (1968), for Equipe. Great surprise, I never saw an Equipe single before and in spite of a non-specific cover artwork, this one looks modern and truly beautiful. Oswaldo Nunes & The Pop's delivers something my good friends identify as Samba Rock, something really hard to define with my limited knowledge. Tracks include:

01 - Segura Esse Samba Ogunhe
02 - Eu Chorei

Eva (1969), for Copacabana, brings another nice cover, although is just the opposite from Equipe. Perhaps this cover was even considered antique in 1969, but it is truly beautiful and matches perfect with the label design in the middle. Tracks include:

01 - Cantiga por Luciana
02 - Meu Mundo

Joao Roberto Kelly - Joao Roberto Kelly (1980), for Copacabana, a very recent single taking in consideration the previous ones. We have a different Joao Roberto Kelly this time, performing as a romantic singer and making a wonderful job. Tracks include:

01 - Mistura
02 - A Solidao Chegou

Turibio Santos - Villa Lobos | 12 Estudos para Violao (1963)

This is for musicians, guitar aficionados, classical music lovers and anyone who wants to know more about the origins of the way of playing an instrument that has a great identification with the music from Brazil, the violao (acoustic guitar). This album has a series of violao estudos written by Maestro Heitor Villa Lobos in 1929, performed by Turibio Santos, a gifted classical violao player more than 40 years ago. I think this quick and very hard to build introduction is solid enough to get your attention to this great album.

This is Turibio Santos - Villa Lobos | 12 Estudos para Violao (1963), for Caravelle. Making a fast Internet research on Villa Lobos 12 Estudos para Violao it clear these twelve pieces are really a reference for any serious musician. This is also Turibio Santos debut LP, the first step of one of the most important classical guitar performers in Brazil with more than 40 albums recorded. These very old Turibio Santos renditions to Villa Lobos Estudos are considered the best interpretation of this anthological set of compositions. I'm really proud to own the original vinyl issue of this first Turibio Santos LP, the vinyl transfer sounds excellent and FLAC files are also available to maximize your experience. Tracks include:

01 - Estudo Nº 1 Em Mi Menor (Villa-Lobos)
02 - Estudo Nº 2 Em Lá Maior (Villa-Lobos)
03 - Estudo Nº 3 Em Ré Maior (Villa-Lobos)
04 - Estudo Nº 4 Em Sol Maior (Villa-Lobos)
05 - Estudo Nº 5 Em Dó Maior (Villa-Lobos)
06 - Estudo Nº 6 Em Mi Menor (Villa-Lobos)
07 - Estudo Nº 7 Em Mi Menor (Villa-Lobos)
08 - Estudo Nº 8 Em Dó Sustenido MenorR (Villa-Lobos)
09 - Estudo Nº 9 Em Fá Sustenido Menor (Villa-Lobos)
10 - Estudo Nº 10 Em Si Menor (Villa-Lobos)
11 - Estudo Nº 11 Em Si Menor (Villa-Lobos)
12 - Estudo Nº 12 Em Lá Menor (Villa-Lobos)
