Tania Maria - Apresentamos Tania Maria (1966)

Some of Loronix friends says that this is a late release, but I think, after more than 400 releases the timing is good to present Tania Maria - Apresentamos Tania Maria (1966), for Continental. I'm not sure if it is Tania's debut LP, but it is a very early release of this Brazilian singer, active through three decades since she started with the age of 13 encouraged by her father, also musician.

Tania Maria is also a pianist, building an active career outside Brazil, being recognized as a Jazz singer on several countries and by renowned musicians such like Charlie Byrd. Apresentamos Tania Maria has Tania Maria (piano), Neco (guitar), Luis Marinho (bass), Edison Machado (drums) and Maurico Einhorn (harmonica on tracks 5, 10 and 11). Once again Edison Machado show us that he is the real *samba* drummer. Tracks include:

01 - Não Tem Tradução (Ismael Silva / Nilton Bastos / Francisco Alves) -- Com Quem Roupa (Noel Rosa) -- Três Apitos (Noel Rosa) -- Feitiço da Vila (Noel Rosa / Vadico) -- Feitio de Oração (Noel Rosa)
02 - Viver Morrer (Jota Júnior)
03 - A Voz do Povo (João do Vale / Luis Vieira) -- Nego São (Lisboa / Tranquilo)
04 - Papão (Cláudio E. Mendes / Joaquim Costa Reis)
05 - Ficou na Saudade (Maurício Einhorn / Arnaldo Costa / Sergio A. S. Leite)

09 - A Paz (João Leal Brito "britinho" / Fernando César)
10 - Agora (João Luis / Hélio Delmiro)
11 - Paz de Espírito (Maurício Einhorn / Arnaldo Costa)
12 - O Verão Vem Aí (Paulo Valdez / Otávio)

Booker Pittman - Booker Pittman + Sax Soprano = Sucesso (1965)

Some reviewers says that Booker Pittman only got his fame and recognition due his collaboration with Brazilian Music in the 60's. Well, I think that it was not easy to reach the spotlights in such a gold decade.

Two Booker Pittman releases are available at Loronix, the first, with his stepdaughter Eliana Pittman, News from Brazil - Bossa Nova (1963) and the second, the celebrated Jam Session, with Dick Farney. Now it is time to present Booker Pittman with a record of his own, Booker Pittman - Booker Pittman + Sax Soprano = Sucesso (1965) for Musidisc. Recorded in Brazil, this LP is produced by Nilo Sergio and probably has Brazilian musicians in the set. Unfortunately, personnel are not credited at the album, which is probably the last Booker record. Tracks include:

01 - Hello Dolly (J. Herman)
02 - Broadway (H. Woode / T. Me Era / B. Bird)
03 - What Is The Thing Called Love (Cole Porter)
04 - Ain't Misbehavin (Walter / Razaf / Brooks)
05 - Lonesome Roas (N. Shilkret / G. Austin)
06 - Taste Of Honey (B. Scott)
07 - Balling The Jack (C. Smith)
08 - Petite Fleur (S. Bechet)
09 - Nobody Knows The Troubles I've Seen (Tradicional)
10 - Stereo Blues

O Quarteto - O Quarteto (1968)

Yesterday, I was chatting with Cleber and Renato at Loronix Live Chat, which is the chatting application inside Loronix Forum and Cleber suggested an LP from the vocal group O Quarteto. Cleber said also that the four O Quarteto members are all engineers, something that I could not check.

The first time I saw a LP from O Quarteto was at NAmerica Loves SAmerica from Now, that has the last and late O Quarteto LP recorded in 1977. I'm introducing this vocal group with another release; this is O Quarteto - O Quarteto (1968), for Phillips, which is O Quarteto debut LP. I was not successful searching bios information from this band, but many people appreciates this group that apparently had a short life, recording two LPs in the late 60's and the last release available at Now's blog. They have also important participations at Brazilian music festivals from the 60's. Let's see how O Quarteto performs here at Loronix. Tracks include:

01 - Os Grilos (Marcos Valle / Paulo Sergio Valle)
02 - Live For Life (Vivre Pour Vivre) (F. Lai)
03 - O Velho (Chico Buarque)

Tia Amelia - A Bencao Tia Amelia (1980)

Hello, Good night, friends! Get set to hear something truly amazing. A Mr. X. contribution, really great, this is Amelia Brandao Neri or Tia Amelia, Brazilian pianist, born in 1897 and since the age of four, started her long time friendship with the piano.

This is Tia Amelia - A Bencao Tia Amelia (1980), for Marcus Pereira Discos, recorded by Amelia Brandao Neri at the age of 83. It is hard to describe an album like this and the story of this woman; it is amazing that she recorded this wonderful instrumental LP alone with the piano at this age. Tia Amelia got married at the age of 17 and had to stop with the piano. Her husband died when she was 25 and she had to cope with the rest of her life alone with her three daughters.

Since then, Tia Amelia dedicated all her life to music, being an active pianist and composer. A Bencao Tia Amelia is only Tia Amelia, the piano and her compositions, mainly valsas (waltz) and choros.

It is amazing how she play the piano on such age. Tia Amelia left us three years after this release at the age of 86. Tracks include:

01 - Choro Serenata (Tia Amélia)
02 - Mosquita (Tia Amélia)
03 - Choro Para Minha Filha (Tia Amélia)

11 - Penazziando (Tia Amélia)
12 - Para Meus Netos Bisnetos e Tetraneta (Tia Amélia)

Lennie Dale - Um Show de Bossa (1964)

I have been receiving e-mails from Loronix friends such like Mr. D&C and Cesar Saldanha asking for this release. It was really my fault to postpone the best out of the three LPs released by Lennie Dale for Elenco. I understand those prayers since this is really the best, pretty better in comparison with the previous ones.

This is Lennie Dale - Um Show de Bossa (1964) with Bossa Tres, the renowned Bossa Jazz combo lead by the pianist Luiz Carlos Vinhas. The production is from Aloysio de Oliveira and Bossa Tres setup for this LP is Luiz Carlos Vinhas (piano), Edison Machado (drums) and Tiao Neto (bass). This is the first out of the 3 Lennie Dale releases for Elenco, as I said, the best one.

My special thanks to Cesar Saldanha by the cover artwork and the files, thanks also the Loronixer Renato, which is a Loronix Forum user and also called my attention to this LP while using Loronix Live Chat, the Chat application inside the Forum, you should not miss Loronix Forum, here. Tracks include:

01 - Tamanco no Samba (Orlann Divo / Hélton Menezes)

02 - Corcovado (Tom Jobim)

Eduardo Costa - Apresentando Eduardo Costa e Seu Conjunto (1965)

I will never get tired or satisfied with Brazilian organists. It is unanimous that Walter Wanderley is some steps above, but the whole organist crew is all great. This is a brand new one at Loronix, meet Eduardo Costa - Apresentando Eduardo Costa e Seu Conjunto (1965), for CBS.

Once again, bio information on Eduardo Costa is restricted to recordings and personnel information. Eduardo released a second LP for Rozenblit that seems to be his second and last release. Eduardo Costa e Seu Conjunto is Eduardo Costa (organ), Ezequiel Silva (acoustic guitar), Antônio Carlos de Campos "Cacau" (drums), Mauro Herrero (percussion) and Vasco Assis (bass). Tracks include:

01 - Mulata Dengosa (Tuca / Consuelo de Castro)

12 - Inútil Paisagem (Tom Jobim / Aloysio de Oliveira)

Nestor Amaral and His Continentals - Brazil (1957)

Here we go again with another contribution, something very hard to track down information about. Zub Zub sent this record, the coolest alias I have seen for months. The nice Zub Zub, which I don't know if is a she or a he, runs the amazing Blog Magic of Juju (another cool name) dedicated to obscure and rare music from the 5 continents that you will not find on any other website. Make a try at Magic of Juju (http://magicofjuju.blogspot.com) to enjoy Zub Zub pearls and also say thank you for this nice release.

This is Nestor Amaral and His Continentals - Brazil (1957), 10', for Golden Tone (USA), on my discography of choice, listed as the last Nestor Amaral record. I'm not a Nestor Amaral authority, but it seems that he is much more recognized outside of Brazil. Nestor was music director for Carmem Miranda for many years. He had also an important collaboration and partnership with Laurindo Almeida, they worked together on Radio and Laurindo considers Nestor as one of the best voices and guitar players of that time. Nestor Amaral was also member of the legendary O Bando da Lua. Tracks include:

01 - Brazil
02 - Pra Que Discutir
03 - Currupaco
04 - Porto Alegre
05 - Batucada
06 - Tico
07 - Baia
08 - Bamba no Samba

Mario Zan e Seu Acordeao, Com Solistas e Coro - Brincando de Escola com Mario Zan (1959)

Mario Zan, the international renowned Brazilian accordion player has passed yesterday by a stroke in Sao Paulo. Mario San was considered by Luiz Gonzaga, o Rei da Sanfona, as the best Brazilian accordion player of all times.

This sad note came to me by a friend that also sent to Loronixers a Mario Zan LP for a tribute, Mario Zan e Seu Acordeao, Com Solistas e Coro - Brincando de Escola com Mario Zan (1959), for RCA. This LP has a curiosity, track 08 has the first recording of the Brazilian Singer Wanderley Cardoso, a child by that time. It is a child record and Mario Zan accordion can be heard in all tracks. Tracks include:

01 - Brincando de Escola (Ruby / Osmar Zan)
02 - Criança Sapeca (Mário Zan / Nonô Basílio)
03 - Vou Estudar (Osmar Zan / Ruby)
04 - Uma História Divertida (Piraci)
05 - Homenagem a Mamãe (Nonô Basílio / Osmar Zan)
06 - Quarto Centenário (Mário Zan / J. M. Alves)
07 - Nosso Brasil (Mário Zan / Arlindo Pinto)
08 - Festinha do Papai (Nonô Basílio / Osmar Zan)
09 - Canção do Jornaleiro (Heitor dos Prazeres) with Wanderley Cardoso
10 - Não Vou Brincar (Mário Zan / Armando Pinto)
11 - Pedido a Papai Noel (Ado Benatti)
12 - Boas Festas (Assis Valente)

Lyra de Xopoto - Relembrando Sucessos (1960)

This is really cool. Lira de Xopoto was a Radio show broadcasted by Radio Nacional in Rio de Janeiro, which was designed to announce and promote regional bands from the countryside of Brazil. Paulo Roberto presented the radio show and the Maestro in charge of musical direction and arrangements was Lyrio Panicali.

Supporting the radio show, a homonimous band was created, Lyra de Xopoto, releasing several 78rpm and some LPs. This is a LP release, Lyra de Xopoto - Relembrando Sucessos (1960), for Sinter, probably, a compilation of previous recordings.

It is supposed that Maestro Lyrio Panicali is in charge of this LP arrangement or at least some of them. Really unique LP with a nice cover that makes this release a nice pick for Loronix. Tracks include:

01 - São Paulo Quatrocentão
02 - Noite Feliz
03 - Brejeiro
04 - 13 de Maio
05 - Arnoud no Choro
06 - Caixinha de Música
07 - Jingle Bells
08 - 26 de Junho
09 - Pastorinhas
10 - São Paulo
11 - Cristo Nasceu na Bahia
12 - Nova Friburgo

Brasilian Singers - Brasilian Singers (1974)

This is an amazing post provided by a couple of very good friends of Loronix and also five out of five stars blog owners, Now to the Power of Now from N.America Loves S.America and Trix from TrixVinylRips. zecalouro is just doing the easy work, Now and Trix have all credits.

I will take from N.America Loves S.America the entire record description provided by Now, since I could not make it better. Mighty Now took four months to get this cover. Let's stay with Now words.

"All due respect to trixvinylrips for this SUPER AMAZING POST.

Trix has told me of the true content of this record & its importance. He tells me that it is a super rare meeting of some very fine talents fused to the SAMBA REVIVAL. The Golden Boys,Trio Esperança & Evinha are some the artists involved here. This record is so alive and overflowing with energy! If pure Samba is your thing, then this record is for YOU. Worth having for the super sweet "Camisa 10" alone, which I'm told is the number of the very famous football star PELE. Every track is a winner on this one. This is the second time I get to hear the super funky "Dingui Li Bangue", with it's chorus chanting "Like a SEX MACHINE". Very strong album of Samba workouts! I would safely say a "Carnival Bomb" hit this one!! THE PARTY IS HERE. ALL ABOARD! 5 stars! Thanks Trix for this rip & any of those sharing their rare LP's with us. YOU ARE the record company & much respect for keeping the spirit of this music alive! Crate Diggers RULE!

P.S. It took me 4 months to track down the proper LP artwork for this one. Cheers!"

Elizabeth - Quero ver de Perto (1970)

From now on, every release provided by the mighty Arara Azul will be delivered with this picture, some sort of Arara Azul Quality Seal, will be very easy to identify the always-nice releases provided by Arara Azul.

This new one is really great, Arara Azul is the Loronixer friend that provided the first Elizabeth release, Eu, Elizabeth. If you had fun with that first, you cannot miss this second one, Elizabeth - Quero ver de Perto (1970), for RGE. Elizabeth composes alone all 12 tracks on this new one; she was probably also responsible for this cover, really gorgeous.

Elizabeth was active until the late 70's, from this point; I could not search any other recording. Musicians on the set were not listed. Tracks include:

01 - Quero Ver de Perto (Elizabeth)
02 - Vulcão (Elizabeth)
03 - Vida Agitada (Elizabeth)
04 - Não Faço Segredo (Elizabeth)
05 - Se Há Um Deus (Elizabeth)
06 - Eu Luto Contra Tudo Contra Todos (Elizabeth)
07 - Vou Falar-lhe Francamente (Elizabeth)
08 - Luis (Elizabeth)
09 - Afinal de Contas (Elizabeth)
10 - Eu Faço a Guerra (Elizabeth)

Burnier e Cartier - Burnier e Cartier (1974)

Since the first day I met Mr. D&C, he said wonders about this Duo, Burnier and Cartier. I have to admit that Mr. D&C was 100% right. This is not a LP that hooks you at a first hearing, you will need to give several chances to him, but when you start having fun, you will never stop to it.

This is Burnier e Cartier - Burnier e Cartier (1974), their debut LP for RCA. These nice dudes were active from 1974 to 1978, releasing their second LP in 1976 for Odeon and another very hard to find release in collaboration with Don Burrows for First American Records (1977) as Brazilian Parrots. Later this month, we will have good news about this Brazilian Parrots. Tracks include:

01 - Só Tem Lugar Pra Você (Tavinho Bonfá / Cláudio Cartier)

11 - Europanema (Tavinho Bonfá)
12 - Marcante (Tavinho Bonfá / Cláudio Cartier)

Carolina Cardoso de Menezes - Boite Carolina (1957)

Another Mr. X release, the most obscure, incognito and impossible to identify Loronix contributor. In spite of the mystery that surrounds Mr. X activities, his contributions are always great, not different with this one, Carolina Cardoso de Menezes - Boite Carolina (1957) for Odeon.

If were not introduced to Carolina by the earlier posts, this is a great chance. Carolina Cardoso de Menezes is a classic pianist that dedicated his career to popular music, adapting jazz feelings to Brazilian rhythms. I guess this is Carolina debut LP, just a guess that needs to be checked, since I have been loosing some reputation when informing debut LPs. Tracks include:

01 - Despedida de Mangueira (Benedito Lacerda / Aldo Cabral)
02 - Boa Noite Amor (José Maria de Abreu / Francisco Matoso)
03 - Puladinho (Carolina Cardoso de Menezes)
04 - Mulher de Malandro (Heitor dos Prazeres)
05 - Nancy (Bruno Arelli)
06 - Dono dos Teus Olhos (Humberto Teixeira)
07 - Maria Maria (Tuyú)

10 - Vai Haver Barulho no Chateau (Noel Rosa / Valdrido Silva)
11 - Preludiando (Carolina Cardoso de Menezes)
12 - Boa Sorte (Carolina Cardoso de Menezes)

Clare Fischer Plays Antonio Carlos Jobim and Clare Fischer - So Danco Samba (1962)

Caetano Rodrigues and Charles Gavin book has an amazing section with records from non-Brazilian artists performing Bossa Nova. Particularly, Charlie Byrd LPs are fantastic with those covers with parrots and macaws with some Brazilian spots on background.

Among the several gems available there, Caetano selected a special one, Clare Fischer - Clare Fischer Plays Antonio Carlos Jobim and Clare Fischer, So Danco Samba (1962), for World Pacific with Clare Fischer (piano, organ), Dennis Budimir (guitar), Bob West (bass) and Colin Bailey (drums). For a flawless description of Clare Fischer’s So Danco Samba, I'm gathering Caetano own words, as follow:

"This America pianist really tried to decipher the refined language of Bossa Nova. He was not one of the pioneers of the new style as great names of the international jazz scene had already tackled it. However, Fischer's merit lay in his choice of repertoire, almost entirely based on the songs by Tom Jobim, bringing elements of jazz into the traditional Brazilian flavor, despite the obvious limitations in his swing and playing technique. The truth is that Bossa Nova revitalized jazz, bringing back a cool vibe again".

Ana Lucia - Ana Lucia (1959)

It has been a long time since the last release provided by Mr. K., our Japanese collaborator, our Loronix friend that pleased us with Leny Andrade - Gravado no Mexico (1966) some weeks ago. There are some releases from Mr. K. queued and this pick is another nice one.

This is Ana Lucia - Ana Lucia (1959), for Chantecler, until some friend tells I'm wrong, probably her debut LP. This is certainly a most wanted LP of this Brazilian singer that was not well known by many and now has a place on our collection. The cover artwork remembers a lot Baden Powell debut LP, released in the same period by Philips. Thanks once again Mr. K. Tracks include:

01 - Cheiro de Saudade (Djalma Ferreira / Luis Antônio)
02 - Por Que Tinha de Ser (Tom Jobim / Vinicius de Moraes)

11 - O Tempo e o Vento (Johnny Alf)
12 - Amar Não É Brinquedo (Miranda / Maio)

Dulce Nunes - Dulce (1966)

Someone, not someone, Zelal, said that Dulce Nunes - Samba do Escritor is an album that makes his/her eyes wet. Zelal also said that the first Dulce Nunes LP, Dulce, is also unique and has the participation of Baden Powell.

Zelal, I don't know who you are, but I took your suggestion and made a try at Dulce Nunes - Dulce (1966), for Forma. I agree with you, wonderful LP. The arrangements are from Maestro Guerra Peixe, Baden Powell not only plays guitar as a sideman, but is an active collaborator making arrangements of some tracks. Maestro Guerra Peixe plays the piano as well the legendary sax, flute and clarinet player Copinha. Tracks include:

01 - Cântico (Baden Powell / Luis de Camões)
02 - Bom Dia Amigo (Baden Powell / Vinicius de Moraes)
03 - Canção à Minha Amada (Baden Powell / Ruy Guerra)

10 - Eurídice (Vinicius de Moraes)
11 - Onde Está Você (Oscar Castro Neves / Luvercy Fiorini)
12 - Soneto da Separação (Tom Jobim / Vinicius de Moraes)

Claudette Soares - E Dona da Bossa (1964)

It was very hard to choose the best post of this Saturday. Really. It took me a lot of time to decide what sould be the best pick. I will not tell the others to do not spoil the surprise on further posts, they were all great and could be here easily.

For several reasons, the decision was Claudette Soares - E Dona da Bossa (1964), for the legendary label Mocambo. I took hours thinking to decide and now I'm having troubles on writing about this release. Anyway, perhaps it is another self-explanatory, full of classic Bossa Nova tunes, such as: Garota de Ipanema, Tristeza de Nos Dois and Samba do Aviao. Tracks include:

01 - Pra Que Chorar (Vinicius de Moraes / Baden Powell)
02 - Azul Contente (Tereza Souza / Walter Santos)
03 - Samba do Avião (Tom Jobim)
04 - Sem Você (Tom Jobim / Vinicius de Moraes)
05 - Ah Se Eu Pudesse (Roberto Menescal / Ronaldo Bôscoli)
06 - Tristeza de Nós Dois (Durval Ferreira / Bebeto / Maurício Einhorn)
07 - Garota de Ipanema (Tom Jobim / Vinicius de Moraes)
08 - Samba Só (Walter Santos / Tereza Souza)
09 - Crediário do Amor (Theo de Barros)
10 - Bossa na Praia (Pery Ribeiro / Geraldo Cunha)
11 - Evolução (Pery Ribeiro / Geraldo Cunha)
12 - Conselho a Quem Quiser Voltar (Silvio César)
