Gal Costa - Gal Costa (1969)

It has been a time since I was thinking about showing Loronixers some artists and LPs of Tropicalismo, also known as Tropicalia, a Brazilian art movement that arose in the late 1960s and encompassed theatre, poetry and music, among other forms. Key Tropicalismo artists are Caetano Veloso, Os Mutantes, Tom Zé, Gilberto Gil, Gal Costa, Maria Bethania, among others.

Tropicalia releases at Loronix will be very limited, introducing the main artists and their best LPs. I hope this will be a very successful series.

The first is Gal Costa with one of her best releases, Gal Costa - Gal Costa (1969), also known as Cinema Olympia, for Philips. I will not try a review of mine this time; AMG has done and includes this LP on AMG pick list. Find below AMG Review and tracks.

After Caetano Veloso broke out with his solo debut, the self-titled 1968 release recognized as the building block for the now infamous Brazilian Tropicalia movement, his friends and musical peers released similar albums, always upping the ante in terms of outrageousness and inventiveness. This release, the second of two self-titled albums released by Gal Costa in 1969, set the high watermark in terms of overall insanity and complete experimental freedom for the entire lot; not Veloso nor Gilberto Gil, Tom Zé, or even the rambunctious Os Mutantes stepped this far out into psychedelia, and even though Costa had hinted at the noisier aspects she was interested in exploring with her previous release, this album must have shocked listeners when it arrived on the shelves. In fact, 35 years of MPB -- or music from anywhere else in the world for that matter -- hasn't heard another sonic assault quite like this. Costa is a ball of contradictions here: overtly wild but in control; sweet and accessible, yet brash; and, at times, almost violent as she screams and moans her way through the album while spindly, whiny guitars mix with soulful bass grooves, bombastic drums, exotic horns, woodwinds, and strings. The sonic textures are taken completely over the top with judicious use of delays, reverbs, and various production techniques new and exciting at the time. When taken all together, the listener may not at first notice the high quality of the songwriting for the unreal, emotional freak-outs laced throughout the performances. Costa's crazy improvisations over Caetano Veloso's tune "The Empty Boat" serve as evidence of this delightful impulsiveness when placed side by side with Veloso's own rather forward-thinking recording of the song, which sounds positively conservative by comparison. All in all, Gal Costa is an indescribable, unpredictable, ambitious, and fun record preserving a slice of time when Brazil was at its most controversial state musically and politically and is a must-have for any psychedelic collection. Pery Ribeiro - Pery e Todo Bossa (1963)

The Bossanovadreamer just said that I could not forget to release this LP today, since it was promised yesterday and many Pery Ribeiro's fans would be really disappointed if did not make it today. So, here it is, Pery Ribeiro - Pery e Todo Bossa (1963), for Odeon.

I'm surprised that Pery has so many fans at Loronix. We need to check one thing, on an interview for Jo Soares a couple of months ago, Pery Ribeiro said that he was the first to record the anthological song Garota de Ipanema, question: is this Garota de Ipanema the first recording or there is another previous one released on single, EP or 78 rpm? Eduardo Conde - Minha Chegada (1969)

If you are from Brazil, you will probably have a surprise with this post. Eduardo Conde - Minha Chegada (1969), for Philips, is the debut LP of an artist that decided later to be an actor, that's why people in Brazil naturally associates Eduardo Conde as the TV Globo actor.

Eduardo Conde has started his singer career in 1967, guided by Beth Carvalho that teach him his first acoustic guitar chords. Conde was also member of Conjunto 3D and participated with Beth Carvalho at record session of the LP Muito Na Onda. Eduardo Conde has passed a few years ago, on the very early age of 56.

Bossanovadreamer is responsible for this release and I want to thanks Bossanovadreamer for this contribution and overall participation at Loronix. u d man! Tracks include:

Elizeth Cardoso e Zimbo Trio - Balancam na Sucata (1969)

I had to make a very difficult decision between two choices for this post; so difficult that Google Talk was opened to find an on-line Loronixer to ask for help. The choices: A) Elizeth Cardoso e Zimbo Trio - Balancam na Sucata (1969), B) Pery Ribeiro - Pery e Todo Bossa (1963). If you were desperately waiting for B), blame it on Ticiana, she was the on-line friend that took the decision, but don't worry, Pery Ribeiro will be released tomorrow.

Thanks for the pick, Ticiana, this is Elizeth Cardoso e Zimbo Trio - Balancam na Sucata (1969), for Copacabana, recorded live at Boate Sucata, Rio de Janeiro, an anthological show from the 60's and another partnership between Elizeth Cardoso and Zimbo Trio. This album speaks for itself; Elizeth Cardoso singing with the Jazzy accompaniment of Zimbo Trio makes it a flawless release. Tracks include:

Sivuca - Sivuca (1972)

I like to say thank you once in a while, but this time I want to say that I *need* to say Thank You. I have received today eight contributions. Amazing. It is also necessary to say that the contributions are being queued, so yours should wait some time to reach Loronix.

This is the contribution number 7 of this Friday, not queued because I'm a fan of this artist and this beautiful cover makes this post something very hard to resist. This is Sivuca - Sivuca (1972), for Vanguard and issued in Brazil in 1974 for Copacabana.

Andrade is the Loronix friend that took this forgotten treasure from his personal collection and made everything. Thanks a million Andrade. Zezinho e Seu Som Balanco - Rio... Suave e a Noite (195?)

Let's continue the day with the type of released that I like most, the obscure release. This is a Mr. X. contribution, Zezinho e Seu Som Balanco - Rio... Suave e a Noite (195?), for Cartaz. I've been searching for the release date of this album for weeks; my best guess is the late 50's with some chance to early 60's.

I don't know if Zezinho, Jose Baptista da Silva Jr., is a Maestro, but he is in charge of arrangements and piano with the accompaniment of Lula (piston), Drausio (trombone), Schitinie (sax), Jurandir (drums), Cacau (guitar), Gerson (bass) and Chacal, Turco and Nascimento (percussion). I'm also betting all my five dollars that Turco is in fact the legendary drummer Turquinho. Tracks include:

02 - P'ra que chorar (Baden Powell / Vinícius de Moraes)
03 - Cha cha cha de las secretarias (Pepe Ruiz)

10 - Suave é a noite "Tender is the night" (Webster / Fain)
11 - Papouche (Shorty Rogers)
12 - Perfidia (Albert Dominguez)

Portinho e Sua Orquestra - Fogo nos Metais (1965)

Hello, Good Night! I decided to start the day with Portinho, not the drummer, but the Maestro Portinho with Portinho e Sua Orquestra - Fogo nos Metais (1965), for Continental. This record is exactly what is described in the title and shown at this nice cover artwork, Sambas on an orchestra, very swinging and dancing with brass instruments at foreground with Maestro Portinho arrangements.

This release should not be confused with others homonymous record released by Maestro Portinho in 1963 for Philips and 1974 for RCA. There is also another similar release for Copacabana in 1971, Portinho e Sua Orquestra Escaldante - Fogo nos Metais. Tracks include:

02 - Balanço Zona Sul (Tito Madi)
03 - Inútil Paisagem (Tom Jobim / Aloysio de Oliveira)
04 - Hora de Lutar (Geraldo Vandré)

11 - Você (Roberto Menescal / Ronaldo Bôscoli)
12 - Lobo Bobo (Carlos Lyra / Ronaldo Bôscoli)

Walter Wanderley - Kee-Ka-Roo (1967)

When I just accepted the fact that Loronix was running out of new Walter Wanderley releases, someone - that asked for not being identified even by aliases - sent me this Walter Wanderley - Kee-Ka-Roo (1967), for Verve. The original cover is gatefold, when closed, shows only the first half of this image. I decided to experiment, presenting front and back cover opened.

This is the last Walter Wanderley release for Verve, very nice production as you can realize by this cover. This is Walter at his back with eleven instrumental tracks plus one track - Wait Until Dark - sung by Marge Dodson. Walter is a really great figure, some of his later works has songs with some sad titles such this mentioned Wait Until Dark, Take a Chance with Me and Errinho a Toa, for instance.

Walter has great musicians on the recording session for Kee-Ka-Roo, including the American guitar player John Pizarelli, as follows: Walter Wanderley (organ and electric piano), John Pizarelli (guitar), Jose Marino (bass), Dom um Romao (drums), Alfonso de Paula (trumpet and percussion), Jerome Richardson (flute) and Bobby Rosengarden (percussion and vibes). Tracks include:

01 - Amazonas
02 - Kee-ka
03 - Canto de Ossanha

Trio Surdina - Trio Surdina em Bossa Nova (1963)

Woow! That's a great release with all the ingredients that I like. This is Trio Surdina, an instrumental trio that released more than 70 records, all released for the same record label, the legendary Musidisc of Nilo Sergio. Probably, Trio Surdina is Nilo Sergio creation since the name surdina is a joke, meaning that members cannot be revealed.

Trio Surdina members were not revealed due contract obligations with other record labels, great Musidisc idea. Obviously, they were revealed or discovered later and most of Trio Surdina recordings were made by Fafa Lemos (violin), Garoto (guitar) and Chiquinho (accordion). Garoto - Anibal Augusto Sardinha - is a renowned Brazilian guitarist.

This is Trio Surdina - Trio Surdina em Bossa Nova (1963), for Musidisc. The line-up for this Trio Surdina "edition" is Waltel Branco (guitar), Chiquinho do Acordeom (accordion) and Patane (violin). Please give me your feedback about Trio Surdina; I have earlier releases that I can share with friends in a near future. Tracks include:

01 - Corcovado (Tom Jobim)
02 - História (Nilo Sergio)
03 - Depois do Carnaval (Silvino Júnior / Wilson Tirapelli)

Neco's Guitar And The Ipanema Strings - Velvet Bossa Nova (1966)

Here is the first Neco LP at Loronix. Neco is a Brazilian guitarist well known as the guitar player of the anthological album Os Ipanemas (1966). Neco is noted by his right hand with a strong sense of rhythm. He has participated on several recording sessions for many record labels along his career. Being also an arranger and composer, Neco released his first LP in 1963, Samba Nova Concepcao, being in charge of arrangements and orchestra.

This is the second solo LP, Neco's Guitar And The Ipanema Strings - Velvet Bossa Nova (1966), for London, with classic Bossa Nova tunes and arranged by Nelsinho do Trombone, considered by many as an instrumental masterpiece LP from the 60's. It is now times to Loronixers check the celebrated Velvet Bossa Nova. Tracks include:

Breno Sauer Quinteto - Sambabessa (1963)

Good night, friends! Everybody talks about the Brazilian music from Rio de Janeiro, Minas Gerais, Sao Paulo and Bahia, notably, these five states are really important, they gave renowned artists and were also responsible for cultural movements such as Tropicalismo, Bossa Nova, etc.

I have received more than a few e-mails from friends of Rio Grande do Sul, not with complaints, just remembering that this state gave to us legends such like Elis Regina, Manfredo Fest, among others. Breno Sauer is not considered a legend, but had an important contribution to instrumental music and was responsible for some other artists that got recognition with him, such like Garoto and Olmir Stocker aka Alemao.

Let's move the spotlight for Breno Sauer Quinteto - Sambabessa (1963), for RGE, wonderful instrumental LP featuring Breno Sauer (vibes), Olmir Stocker (guitar), Osvaldo Carrero (accordion), Portinho (drums) and Erne Eger (bass). You will probably wonder if the drummer Portinho is in fact Maestro Portinho. I could not check it, but it seems that it is just a homonymous. Tracks include:

01 - Sambabessa (Olmir Stocker "Alemão")
02 - Amor e Paz (Tito Madi)
03 - Luciana (Tom Jobim / Vinicius de Moraes)
04 - Canção do Amor Mais Triste (Édson Borges)

10 - Desafinado (Tom Jobim / Newton Mendonça)
11 - Lembranças (Raul Sampaio / Benil Santos)
12 - Três Amigos (Túlio Piva)

Ana Mazzotti - Ninguem Vai me Segurar (1974)

Ana Mazzotti has arrived at Loronix. She is a Brazilian singer from the 70's, specialized in Jazz that release this debut LP in 1974 and two additional releases, one in 1974 and other one in 1982, a recorded live show. Anyway, that is all I know about Ana Mazzotti, but I'm sure that this is sensational LP, Ana Mazzotti - Ninguem Vai me Segurar (1974), for Top Tape.

Thanks Max de Castro that provided with his great sharing spirit this LP to Loronixers. Max describes this record with a great enthusiasm and I agree with Max, this is a flawless JazzFunky record from the 70's, with Anna Mazzotti backed up by three Azimuth members, including the mighty Jose Roberto Bertrami (moog, organ and piano), Alex Malheiros (bass and guitars), Romildo T. Santos (drums) and Ariovaldo (percussion). I think this is one of those LPs that are released quiet and becomes all time favorites. Tracks include:

01 - Agora Ou Nunca Mais (Ana Mazzotti / José Roberto Bertrami)
02 - Roda Mundo (Ana Mazzotti)
03 - Acalanto (Ana Mazzotti / José Roberto Bertrami)

Orquestra e Coral de Severino Filho - Metais e Vozes em Festival (1963)

Hello! Let's start the day great with another Caetano Rodrigues contribution to Loronix. This record is always taken by mistake as an Os Cariocas album, probably by the great identification of Severino Filho with Os Cariocas. Severino filho was founder and member of os Cariocas during all phases, leading the group since the passing of his brother, Ismael Netto.

Severino Filho is a pianist and is also responsible for Os Cariocas vocal arrangements. This is Orquestra e Coral de Severino Filho - Metais e Vozes em Festival (1963), similar to the last release of Orquestra Pan American, which also had the participation of Os Cariocas.

Personnel include, Coral Oito Vozes, which is Os Cariocas as Severino Filho, Badeco, Quartera and Luiz Roberto plus Hortencia, Jurema, Gloria and Odaléa. Hortencia, Jurema and Gloria are sisters of Severino Filho and Ismael Neto. This is a unique orchestra LP selected by Caetano Rodrigues to Loronixers. Marcos Samm - Psiu! (1970)

Mr. D&C said wonders about this album yesterday at Loronix Forum. Actually, this is a Mr. D&C long time recommendation to zecalouro. My question about this LP, which is great indeed, is Marcos Samm itself. What happened with this singer that recorded two singles, this LP and had also some participations at the Brazilian festivals in 1969. Information about Marcos Samm seems to be not available anywhere, as far as I could search.

Produced by Nonato Buzar and arranged by Erlon Chaves, Roberto Menescal, Ivan Paulo and Antonio Aldolfo, this is Marcos Samm - Psiu! (1970), for Polydor. This LP was first available at Quimsy, a nice blog that you should not miss. Tracks include:

Pery Ribeiro, Leny Andrade & Bossa Tres - Gemini V - Show na Boate Porao 73 (1965)

This is a kind of risk free release, there are here, together, two singers, a man and a woman and an anthological instrumental combo, this is Pery Ribeiro, Leny Andrade & Bossa Tres - Gemini V - Show na Boate Porao 73 (1965), for Odeon, considered by many the best Bossa Nova show from the 60's. For those who are used with Rio de Janeiro landscape, Boate Porao 73 is today Teatro Princesa Isabel, which is between Leme and Copacabana at Avenida Princesa Isabel.

Gemini V show lasts for more than one year on this Porao 73 nightclub and was produced by Miele and Ronaldo Boscoli with music direction by Luiz Carlos Vinhas. Rita Reys - Rita Reys Sings Antonio Carlos Jobim (1983)

Yesterday we had Maria Petersen from Denmark with Luiz Eca singing Bossa Nova, let's continue today with another female singer from Europe, now singing the Antonio Carlos Jobim repertoire; this is Rita Reys - Rita Reys Sings Antonio Carlos Jobim (1983). Rita Reys is from The Netherlands, known as Europe's First Lady of Jazz, she started her career 60 years ago and stills active, touring with combos or accompanied by orchestras around Europe.

Andrade sent this LP; he is a great Rita Reys fan. Andrade made all the hard work, cleaning his old vinyl, preparing the MP3s, cover and sending to zecalouro using the Send Files application. Thanks Andrade! This LP has orchestral arrangements from Rogier Van Otterloo and Rita Reys is backed by the Pim Jacobs Quartet. Tracks include:

Waldir Calmon e Seu Conjunto - Feito para Dancar Nr. 7 (1957)

Who is your favorite Brazilian organist? Good question. Walter Wanderley is probably the favorite of many friends, for his international career, association with Bossa Nova, etc. However, we can never forget a true genius that did not have the chance of an international career and exposure, Waldir Calmon.

Waldir Calmon deserves a biographical book, his activity started in the late 30's, releasing his last recording in 1980. In the 40's, he was the first pianist that adopted the solovox, which is a kind of gadget that adapts the acoustic piano to make it sounds like an organ. Anyway, this is Waldir Calmon e Seu Conjunto - Feito para Dancar Nr. 7 (1957), for Radio (not the device, the Label Radio). Thanks to JR for this post. Tracks include:
