Meirelles e Os Copa 7 - Tropical (1969)

Get set for a really nice record, solid from start to end, including this wonderful cover artwork. A record that was a commercial failure by the time of its release in 1969, being discovered and taken to the place were it should belong between the classic Samba Jazz records only a couple of years ago through a release. Blame it on zecalouro and his small green head to forget this record for such a long time.

This is Meirelles e Os Copa 7 - Tropical (1969), for London, not to be taken as the 70's group Copa 7, this is a expanded J.T. Meirelles Copa 5. Tropical is a very curious record, a Samba Jazz classic based on American tunes, instead of Bossa Nova standards. Several musicians that we are appreciate are on the set, such as: Juarez, Dom Salvador, and many others. It is all explained bellow. This is a really self-explanatory release. Tracks include:

Personnel

Annoucement | Links to Commercially Available Music

From now on zecalouro will place eventual links to commercially available albums from the artists we share at Loronix. This is part of a hint sent by a Loronixer. I love the idea, it is a intelligent approach to generate more sales to the artists, give Loronixers the opportunity to get CDs with discounted prices and generate more credibility to our Music Community among the society.

Believe me, it is a major improvement. We will start with Amazon, but we will have products from Brazilian stores in the forthcoming days. Feedback, comments, suggestions and advice are appreciated and necessary to fine-tune our initiative.

Thanks a lot!

Angela Maria - Incomparavel (1962)

I forgot to address Mom's advice during the week. I'm doing it in the last minute, since it should be ready for this Saturday, when zecalouro's mother uses to access the Internet to see what is going on at Loronix. I expect her approval to this post. Actually, I'm sure that she will be amazed. This is a beautiful record with a very nice cover.

This is Angela Maria - Incomparavel (1962), for RCA Victor, the first out of a series of records made by Angela Maria in the early 60's for RCA Victor. We will find here the big voice of Angela Maria singing a repertoire of Sambas from Adelino Moreira, Monsueto, Lucio Cardim, Jair Amorim, among others. There is also an interest interpretation of M. Bottcher's Serenata do Assoviador (Auf Entel Shiebt Man Nicht), adapted by Miguel Gustavo. Tracks include:

01 - Garota Solitária (Adelino Moreira)
02 - O Grande Remédio (Umberto Silva / Toso Gomes)
03 - Preciso de Uma Companhia (Adelino Moreira)
04 - Despejo da Saudade (Monsueto / José Batista)

Zaccarias e Sua Orquestra - Frevo 40 Graus (1961) - 100th Frevo Anniversary Celebration

Hello, good night! Precisely, 100 years ago, a newspaper based in Recife state, Brazil, published a note with the repertoire of the rehearsals from main Carnaval clubs of the city. Among several ones, a give tune had a special name, "O Frevo", the first time in history that the name "Frevo" appeared written and this event celebrates the creation of this Carnaval genre that has the same name after 100 years, Frevo.

This is a small Loronix celebration for Frevo 100 year’s anniversary. The word Frevo has its origins from the word Ferver - free translated as boil, in English. If you never had the chance to see a Frevo performance, take a look at YouTube, there are several ones. A Frevo performance is very difficult and seems to me that you need to be an athlete to make such complex movements. Frevo is still very popular in Brazilian Northeast region, if you are planning to spend your Carnaval there, you should probably see several performances.

This is Zacarrias e Sua Orquestra - Frevo 40 Graus (1961), for RCA Victor. Maestro Zaccarias seems to be the master of mixing Brazilian rhythms with orchestra arrangements. He makes with Frevo this time on this nice set with single tracks on each side; Zaccarias connects all the tunes, ideal if you are planning to play Frevo on your Carnaval Party. Tracks include:

01 - Deixa de Xodó (David Vasconcelos)
02 - Homenagem à Folia (Edgard Morais)
03 - Lágrimas de Clarinete (Lourival Oliveira)
04 - Sempre Atrapalhado (Jorge Gomes)
05 - Sai Dessa (José Gonçalves "Zumba")
06 - O Adeus de Lia (José Felipe / João Santiago)
07 - Recordação de Merabeau (José Ferreira)
08 - Pra Você (Fernando Borges)
09 - Bueno no Frevo (Levino Ferreira)
10 - Segura Esse Bode (Irmãos Valença)
11 - Adeus dos Foliões (Francisquinho)
12 - Recordando a Mocidade (Edgard Morais)

Pedrinho Mattar Trio - Bossa Nova Bossa Nova (1964)

I'm coming from dinner, where I had the chance to hear this LP for the first time. In spite of the outstanding recording quality made by Claudio Fragnan, this LP is since now an essential on my instrumental Bossa Nova short list. It is a great close to Pedrinho Mattar tribute at Loronix, several friends were asking and hunting this record for a long time and now I understand why everybody has been tracking it down.

This is Pedrinho Mattar Trio - Bossa Nova - Bossa Nova (1964), for Farroupilha. Instead of a quartet, Pedrinho Mattar combo was reduced to a trio on this formation, highlighting Pedrinho Mattar piano on foreground. It is not everyday that you hear such tight piano, bass and drums album. Pedrinho Mattar Trio features Pedrinho Mattar (piano), Mathias da Silva Mattos (bass) and Toninho Pinheiro (drums, with further participations at Jongo Trio and Som Tres). Tracks include:

01 - Samba Pro Pedrinho (Walter Santos)
02 - O Amor Que Acabou (Chico Feitosa / Luis Fernando Freire)
03 - Azul Contente (Walter Santos / Tereza Souza)
04 - Consolação (Baden Powell / Vinicius de Moraes)

Pedrinho Mattar - Bossa Nova (1963)

Let's make our Tribute to Pedrinho Mattar. You remember yesterday that I was sad of do not have any LPs to make the Tribute and that we would make it later. For my surprise, I received a call this morning from Caetano, he was trying to manage a solution for it, since we live on different cities and it was impossible to make it timely.

However, Caetano could manage the situation. He asked for the help of our new friend Claudio Fragnan, probably, the only alternative in Rio de Janeiro for Pedrinho Mattar records. Such like Caetano, Claudio is also a respectable collector with all the records that we have been dreaming on our entire life on his great collection. I just made a phone call to Claudio and he was very pleased to help on making a respectful tribute to Pedrinho Mattar. Additionally, zecalouro and Loronixers found a new friend. Thanks Caetano for introducing Claudio and Thanks Claudio for providing these LPs to Loronixers.

We will focus our tribute with the early Pedrinho Mattar LPs, which are the ones that better fit the kind of music that we appreciate here. This first one is a repost, but you should not miss it. Claudio is a genius on the secrets of transforming vinyl on best of breed digital files. You will be amazed when hearing.

This is Pedrinho Mattar - Bossa Nova (1963), for Farroupilha, featuring a quartet with Pedrinho Mattar (piano), Mathias Mattos (bass), Antônio Pinheiro (drums) and Ayres dos Santos (guitar), Pedrinho Mattar debut LP. Tracks include:

01 - O Pato (Jaime Silva)

Myriam Ribeiro - Apresentando Myriam Ribeiro (1961)

This is a great post. After last albums from Morgana and Lucienne Franco, I was tracking down remaining female singers from Sao Paulo, such as Estelinha Egg and others. However, the great Loronix community is always surprising me. Luiz Valenca, sent this wonderful record of a female singer from Sao Paulo that I even knew the existence. Probably Refer should bring plenty information of her. Anyway, while waiting for Refer and the tribute to Pedrinho Mattar, I want to introduce to you this gift from Luiz Valenca.

This is Myriam Ribeiro - Apresentando Myriam Ribeiro (1961), for Philips, the first and only LP released by this singer with arrangements of Maestro Carlos Monteiro de Souza. Myriam Ribeiro sings pretty well and you will probably stay like me, crying for additional information and the reasons for this single recording. I'm brief today, Loronix engineers needs my help, so I will let you with the amazing Myriam Ribeiro. Tracks include:

01 - Vem Felicidade (Vera Brasil / Berto Filho)

Miltinho - Miltinho e Samba (1961)

Hello, Good Night! Happened again, but this time I could fix it timely. Yesterday, I start the day announcing Carnaval for the next Saturday, big mistake corrected by Caetano Rodrigues, Carnaval starts only at the end of the next week, not this next Saturday. Today, I was making another mistake, this time a huge one. I was preparing the first post as a celebration of the 100 years anniversary of Frevo. Stupid green bird, it is tomorrow. I'm happy to have checked some sources to avoid it. Anyway, since we will make the tribute tomorrow, I will show you a nice LP from Miltinho, with many fans and Loronix, some of them really fanatic and crazy, they never stop asking for Miltinho. That's it.

This is Miltinho - Miltinho e Samba (1961), for RGE. This is the Argentinean edition, released by Dimsa. Miltinho has the accompaniment of Orquestra RGE with arrangments and musical direction of Maestro Rubens Perez (Pocho) and Nelsinho, which is a guarantee of trombones on the set. I think this is the first record arranged by Pocho at Loronix. We will have another a solo Pocho album in the forthcoming days; Maestro Pocho is one of Caetano Rodrigues favorites. Tracks include:

01 - Poema das Mãos (Luis Antônio)
02 - Só Vou de Mulher (Haroldo Barbosa / Luis Reis)

09 - Chorando Chorando (Édson Borges / Armando Cavalcanti)
10 - Nós Dois a Sós (Miguel Gustavo)
11 - Um Dono Só (Luis Roberto / Silvério Neto)
12 - Que Sabe Você de Mim (Fernando César / João Leal Brito ''Britinho'')

Tito Madi - Sonho e Esperanca (1961)

I think that everybody knows that the Brazilian pianist Pedrinho Mattar has passed today at the age of 70, Sao Paulo state Santos city. It is disturbing because I had the chance today several of Pedrinho Mattar out of print records. Now I'm sad without a single Pedrinho Mattar album for a tribute. Pedrinho Mattar is great, part of my childhood memories and an important musician that build part of my decision to be also a musician with his TV shows. Probably Caetano will send us a good Pedrinho Mattar LP for a late, but proper homage to this great musician.

Stay with this great Tito Madi record, already scheduled to close the day. I spoke with Caetano about this record and he was very happy to see Sonho e Esperanca at Loronix. bossanovadreamer also gave nice feedback on this album, saying that it is among his Tito Madi favorites.

This is Tito Madi - Sonho e Esperanca (1961), for Columbia, with Orquestra lead by Maestro Lyrio Panicalli and Astor Silva. Tracks include:

Tuca - 2a Colocada no Festival Internacional de Musica - Setor Nacional (1966) | Single

This is the lovely little gift sent by claudia campinas from Cantos e Encantos to Loronixers. A single from the legendary Brazilian singer Tuca that I did not realize the existence, recorded for Chantecler to celebrate Tuca participation at a Festival from the 60's, Festival Internacional de Musica when Tuca made the second place.

This is Tuca - 2a Colocada no Festival Internacional de Musica - Setor Nacional (1966), for Chantecler, featuring the songs O Cavalheiro (Tuca - Geraldo Vandre) and Cirandando (Tuca - Consuelo de Castro). I'm picking the lyrics from O Cavalheiro as it is on the back cover with the music. No tracks this time, just the lyrics and a big thank you to claudia campinas.

Moacyr Silva e Seu Conjunto - Sax Sensacional (1960)

I'm having a great pleasure to make this post and I hope you have the same pleasure listening to this wonderful LP. I have been checking with the fans of Moacyr Silva about the availability of this album, I'm sure it is a very hard to find piece. This is the start of a series of five albums titled "Sax Sensacional" for Copacabana. I'm coming from a phone call with Caetano Rodrigues this first Sax Sensacional LP is a missing piece on his great collection. No more, Caetano, as soon as we finish this post, this record is yours, as my little contribution to your collection and all the effort you put daily at Loronix, supporting zecalouro and all our friends with those wonderful LPs and information you exchange with everybody. I hope you be pleased with this nice Moacyr Silva.

This is Moacyr Silva e Seu Conjunto - Sax Sensacional (1960), for Copacabana, the first of a series of five classic albums from this great Brazilian musician, featuring - according with Caetano - the best formation of Moacyr Silva Conjunto, which is Moacyr Silva (sax), Chaim Lewak (piano), Luis Marinho (bass), Paulinho (drums) with Rubens and Geraldo (percussion). This quartet (Moacyr Silva, Chaim Lewak, Luis Marinho and Paulinho) is truly great, special attention to Chaim Lewak piano on this album, always nice. Tracks include:

01 - Este Seu Olhar (Tom Jobim)
02 - Autumn In Rome (A. Cicognini / Cahn / Weston)
03 - Mi Último Fracaso (Alfredo Gil)
04 - Mil Recados (Norival Reis / Jorge Duarte)
05 - Beautiful Love (V. Young / Dizzy Gillespie / King / Alstyne)
06 - Contigo En La Distancia (C. Portillo de La Luz)
07 - Smoke Gets In You Eyes (J. Kern / O. Harbach)
08 - Carinho e Amor (Tito Madi)

10 - História de Un Amor (C. Almáran)
11 - E Daí (Miguel Gustavo)
12 - Morning Sunrise (S. Romberg / O. Harbach / O. Hammerstein II)

Jair Rodrigues - Jair de Todos os Sambas (1969)

Hello, Good Night! This year is running fast, in my perception, Christmas was yesterday and Carnaval is just knowing at the door, starting next Saturday. In Brazil, Carnaval is an amazing party; we have a really big weekend, starting on Saturday ending on Wednesday. Five days of resting for the ones who resist to engage Samba and 5 days of party to those who were born with "Samba no Pe!" zecalouro will try to show at least a record per day that can be used in Carnaval and this is the first one, by the one a really nice one.

Opps! I forgot to say that Carnaval is a golden time for Brazilian musicians, their activity has a peak during these days where several clubs present live shows all around the country. I hope Brazilian musicians make a great Carnaval, as usual.

This is Jair Rodrigues - Jair de Todos os Sambas (1969), for Philips. I don't know Jair Rodrigues discography from start to end, but I think this is one of his best albums, pretty solid with several Samba songs that I could heard and remember again when I took this LP for a hearing, such as Bahia de Todos os Deuses, Casa de Bamba, Pra que Dinheiro and others. If you are planning to make a Carnival party, this record will never leave your equipment. Tracks include:

01 - Bahia de Todos os Deuses (Bala / Manoel)
02 - Bloco de Sujo (Luis Antônio / Luis Reis) -- Levanta a Cabeça (Oswaldo Nunes / Ivan Nascimento) -- Avenida Iluminada (Newton Teixeira / Brasinha)

12 - Quem Entrar na Roda É Rei (Tito Madi)
13 - Leva Meu Samba (Ataulfo Alves)

Elizeth Cardoso - Muito Elizeth (1966) with Som Tres, Luiz Loy Quinteto and Regional Caculinha

In one of those zecalouro's flights over the old vinyl stores at Copacabana, he found this piece and although it is a record already available at Loronix, we have a mandatory repost here. Caetano also agrees that this LP is truly amazing and deserves a better place in 2007, instead of being lost on a given week of 2006. Additionally, we have now details that were not available by the time of the first post. I'm sure that you should be pleased with this release.

This is Elizeth Cardoso - Muito Elizeth (1965), for Copacabana. Top three Elizeth Cardoso albums on her vast discography. The liner notes written by Herminio Belo de Carvalho is also a masterpiece and has a very interest statement when he mention the composer of track 06 - Amor de Carnaval (Gilberto Gil), saying that we will heard a lot about him in the future.

The production is in charge of Moacyr Silva and three combos, Som Tres, Luiz Loy Quinteto and Conjunto Regional do Caculinha, back Elizeth Cardoso. The album has a concept, showing tunes from Pixinguinha to Chico Buarque de Hollanda, approaching several decades. Pretty self-explanatory music from Elizeth Cardoso, one of the greatest Brazilian divas. Tracks include:

01 - Mundo Melhor (Pixinguinha / Vinicius de Moraes) (*)
02 - Ginga Muxique (Maurício Tapajós / Hermínio Bello de Carvalho) (**)

Os Pilantrocratas - Pilantrocracia (1969)

It is not the first time Loronix is making available a record from the Pilantragem movement and the remaining ones were all very well received by Loronixers. This amazing cover indicates what we will have inside it, a really crazy and psychedelic LP, featuring top-notch Brazilian musicians.

This is Os Pilantrocratas - Pilantrocracia (1969), for Equipe. This record is lead by Paulo Moura and has almost the same musicians that recorded the earlier Paulo Moura Hepteto, also for Equipe. Music Video | Elizeth Cardoso & Zimbo Trio - Sei La Mangueira (1970)

Perhaps this should be the first day that Loronix finishes with a video, zecalouro is sick and tired today, if I get extra strengths I can make another close, but I think it is better let you with this nice video featuring Elizeth Cardoso and Zimbo Trio, recorded for TVE (1970), they are performing Sei La Mangueira. I hope you have enjoyed the day, different day with Tom Ze and the hard to find Dorival Caymmi. Bye.

This is Elizeth Cardoso and Zimbo Trio - Sei La Mangueira (1970), here. (you can download this time)

Hope uEnjoy!

Tom Ze - Estudando o Samba (1976)

I read a message at CBox from the Loronixer bedward asking for this LP as an impossible to find item. Since I like the impossible, I decided to make a try, my first serious try on a record from this internationally renowned artist. Friends, I confess that by hearing this LP, I'm now willing to search for others. Really nice. Do not think that I was waiting for a bad record, but this LP is indeed above the average.

This is Tom Ze - Estudando o Samba (1976), for Continental, the first Tom Ze LP released at Loronix. I think this record should be a classic on Tom Ze discography; it is solid from start to end. Special attention for track 02 - A Felicidade (Antonio Carlos Jobim / Vinicius de Moraes), Tom Ze rendition to this song is really nice and I read that it was not included on further Estudando o Samba reissues. Tracks include:

Maysa - Os Grandes Sucessos de Maysa (1959)

Remember that video with zecalouro showing Caetano Rodrigues Bossa Nova e Outras Bossas book? Do not miss it. The Maysa friends who watch the video - probably many by the emails received - are asking for the LP used by zecalouro to illustrate the size of Caetano's book. It was wise of them to pay a careful attention on that video. Anyway, here it is, the Maysa LP used on that amateur video.

This is Maysa - Os Grandes Sucessos de Maysa (1959), for RGE, a compilation with songs selected from four records released by Maysa, Convite para Ouvir Maysa (1956), Maysa (1957), Convite para Ouvir Maysa Nr. 2 (1958) and Convite para Ouvir Maysa Nr. 3 (1958). These LPs are the four initial Maysa records, an amazing selection that should please Maysa fans and those ones who want to get along with Maysa first years. Tracks include:

Dorival Caymmi - Setenta Anos (1984) also known as Caymmi in Bahia

Hello, Good Night! Blame it on zecalouro. This record was sent by a Loronixer with no cover artwork and just a name: "Caymmi in Bahia". I took it as a compilation of Caymmi songs or one of those especial series with several albums from several artists, etc. I decided to take it for a hearing today and I got amazed with the music (I like Caymmi). With some searches, I could understand that this record is a Dorival Caymmi concert performed in 1979 with Dorival Caymmi accompanied only by his guitar. I can't remember the Loronixer who gave it to us. If he is still around, please send a message for the credits of this amazing contribution.

This is Dorival Caymmi - Sessenta Anos (1984), for Funarte, recorded live at Teatro Castro Alves, Salvador, Bahia, 1979, featuring Dorival Caymmi and his acoustic guitar, considered one of the greatest Dorival Caymmi records. A double LP with 70 minutes of music divided in seven blocks where Caymmi makes meddleys of his repertoire using on each block a given aspect of Bahia culture and his music. Recorded in 1979, this LP was only released in 1984 as part of the celebrations of Dorival Caymmi 70th anniversary. A rare item for Caymmi fans and a essential record on Caymmi discography. Tracks include:

01 - Bloco 1 - Postais da Bahia
02 - Bloco 2 - Das Mulheres
03 - Bloco 3 - Cenas da Bahia, Praias e Festas

Luiz Arruda Paes e Sua Orquestra - Brasil Dia e Noite Vol. 3 (1969)

It is a great pleasure to show Loronixers another great LP from the wonderful Maestro Luiz Arruda Paes. That's right, I will put my heart on top of everything this time. I have a special admiration for Luiz Arruda Paes, his first record presented to Loronixers - Brasil Dia e Noite Vol. 1 - is a great candidate to a repost for a better cover and music in a few weeks. Anyway, let me introduce this jewel to Loronixers.

This is Luiz Arruda Paes e Sua Orquestra - Brasil Dia e Noite Vol. 3 (1969), for Odeon. The Volume 1 and 2 are well-known to Luiz Arruda Paes fans and were occasionally reissued in the last four decades, but this Volume 3 with the beautiful lady on cover seems to be a very hard to find item. I'm very happy to get this copy for an unbeliveable low price. Do not let the word Orquestra cheats you, it is an Orchestra, for sure, but it is magnificent music that you should not miss. Tracks include:

01 - Que Pena
02 - Pais Tropical
03 - Casaco Marrom (Bye Bye Cecy)
04 - Atras do Trio Eletrico
05 - Ate Pensei
06 - Correnteza
07 - Que Maravilha
08 - Nao Identificado
09 - Memorias de Marta Sare
10 - Divino Maravilhoso
11 - Cancao do Amanhecer
12 - Meia Volta
