Happy New Year | Copacabana Celebration by Pictures

Let's play with this Reveillon celebration at Copacabana. This panorama was taken today from my building at noon, it is a 180 degrees panorama. The beach seems normal, such like any given summer day. The idea is to take a new picture every three hours, so we can check how this place gets full of people as time goes by. The next update will be at 3pm. See you there.

Hope uEnjoy!

03:00 p.m. update

This is the 3pm update, no major changes after three hours, except by the boats. The boats are coming with the fireworks that were originally placed at the beach, a nice decision taken to make everything as safe as possible. Do not miss the original panorama, I did not see an airplane crossing the sky and this is a problem when you have to stitch 10 photos to make a panorama like this one. You will see what happened with the plane at the original panorama Do not miss the next update at 06pm. See you there.

Hope uEnjoy!

06:00 p.m. update

Here we go on our 6pm update, I'm afraid this should be the last one since my camera is very simple and with no capabilities to shot night pictures. We can see some real action this time, one of those big cruiser ships took position to watch the fireworks and people starts concentrate in the middle of the beach. I heard about a major change this year, instead of setting up several stages across the beach with different music styles, only a single stage will be make available this year in the middle of the beach with sound and real-time video along the place. Let's check. Do not miss the last and final update, if exists.

Hope uEnjoy!

Hermeto Pascoal e Grupo - Festa dos Deuses (1992)

We closed 2006 with a Luiz Bonfa wearing a tuxedo, in the spirit of the New Year's Eve celebration. I'm a superstitious parrot; so it is better do the same in 2007. We are closing 2008 with an artist that represents the music from Brazil, a real ambassador that promotes our music across the globe, Hermeto Pascoal. This white cover represents peace, and it is the color people use to wear in Brazil in New Year Eve celebration. The title has the words Festa and Deuses, just to bring us good luck in 2008. Anyway, in spite of this choice, driven by the occasion, this is a truly awesome album that had prematurely gone out of print. Let's see.

This is Hermeto Pascoal e Grupo - Festa dos Deuses (1992), for Philips. Hermeto Pascoal liner notes is the best approach to review Festa dos Deuses, made available bellow. Have a nice 2008. Tracks include:

Festa dos Deuses / Fest of the Gods is a work that I call Universal Music in all its senses: rhythmic, harmonic and melodic and fundamentally original.

I am happy to have several v
ery special guests on this disk, like Brazilian President Collor de Mello, physical education teacher Fabíula Pascoal and the great actor and poet Mario Lago. Each of them sings marvelously well within the "sound of the aura," sensitively captured. It is virtually impossible to explain with words and adjectives what the "sound of aura" actually is, but one thing I do know: it depends greatly upon the musicality and perception of the musician.

Then there is she, who said to me on the telephone: "Godfather, I can only reach from a low E until the F on he 5th line of the music staff," but as the recording progressed, she got more and more relaxed until she was able to reach a high D. Because of this she ended up recording a full 7 tracks with us. I have the pleasure to present you Luciana Souza, a new and beautiful voice.

I am suspect when I speak about these great musicians, my brothers in sound in the group: Carlos, Jovino, Itibere, Marcio, Fabio and Pernambuco, but I simply must thank them for all they give of themselves, so much truth and love for this music.

Bil Bell Quarteto - Sua Majestade o Sax

Hello, good evening! I'm making public my Christmas and New Year's Eve gift to my very good friend Caetano Rodrigues. Loronix would not be the same without Caetano's music and advice given on continuous basis to us. Caetano is also a very special human being and this album is something impossible to find, featuring one of the artists that he like most, although we do not have much information on his real identity. The first thing I will make after press the submit button and release this post is to reach Caetano Rodrigues, I'm sure he will be excited and walking on circles for several minutes. Let's see.

This is Bil Bell Quarteto - Sua Majestade o Sax (no date), for Damic, featuring jazzy renditions of international standards lead by a quartet with not credited musicians. bossanovadreamer has a hint about Bil Bell, he said on our last Bil Bell release that Hector Costita is his best guess. Is there anybody here who knows the real artist behind Bil Bell? This answer would make Caetano Rodrigues extremely pleased. Tracks include:

05 - Temptation

Maria Lucia Godoy - Maria Lucia Godoy Interpreta Villa Lobos (1977)

I'm sure that Maria Lucia Godoy has several admirers at Loronix, and I feel really glad about it, from a rather unknown to a very requested artist by many friends. It is not easy to find her albums and I was even satisfied with the two previous we made at Loronix. This third one, with Maria Lucia Godoy performing Villa Lobos at his 90th anniversary is a real find, she is truly gorgeous in this session and is backed by Sergio Abreu, a Brazilian guitarist, brother of Eduardo Abreu from the legendary and acclaimed Duo Abreu. Let's see.

This is Maria Lucia Godoy - Maria Lucia Godoy Interpreta Villa Lobos (1977), for Philips, featuring an orchestra of cellos on tracks 01 to 05 conducted by Alceo Bocchino and the guitar and arrangements of Sergio Abreu on tracks 06 to 11. I'm making available a music video with Duo Abreu performing a Domenico Scarlatti Sonata, K.141 in 1974. Duo Abreu was internationally acclaimed, but had a short career. Sergio Abreu is now an international highly praised luthier since he left his career as musician in the beginning of the 80's. Stay with Maria Lucia Godoy and do not miss Dou Abreu music video, perhaps their only known video performance. Tracks include:

01 - ''Bachianas Brasileiras Nº 5'' Ária (Cantilena) (Villa-Lobos / Ruth Valadares Correia) Dança (Martelo) (Villa-Lobos / Manuel Bandeira)

Varios Artistas - Baiao Nr. 3 (1953)

Hello, good evening! Let's start this Saturday visiting another album from a very nice and old Musidisc sequel dedicated to a genre that dominated Brazilian popular music in the 40's and 50's, the Baiao. We made available a couple of months ago Baiao Nr. 2, and now it is time to show Baiao Nr. 3, much better than the second one. Let's see.

This is Baiao Nr. 3 (1953), for Musidisc, featuring the Brazilian pianist Leal Brito, later known as Britinho, and several special guests, such as the vocal group Tres Marias, Nilo Sergio, Manezinho Araujo and Catulo de Paula. The repertoire features sixteen Baiao tunes, with instrumental tracks by Leal Brito and lyrics when a special guest makes an appearance. I like Baiao and Leal Brito instrumental tracks really worth checking out. Tracks include:

Baden Powell - Nosso Baden (1980) featuring Os Originais do Samba

cvllos said bellow that I'm a tireless vinyl searcher, however, when I check my hunting list, I think it has more albums on search than the ones available at Loronix. Some albums on my hunting list I already have, but they stay listed waiting for a better cover, better media and even to replace a missing piece. This one is the last example and I gave up on searching for another copy. I will tell you what is missing on it. Let's see.

This is Baden Powell - Nosso Baden (1980), for Atlantic. I like this album, Baden Powell guitar has only the accompaniment of Os Originais do Samba rhythm section, there is no bass, drums or any other electric instrument. It is a late acoustic album, a very common concept today. Baden Powell sings with his small and beautiful voice of his late years and Os Originais do Samba give some vocal support in some tracks.

This album was never released on CD and came with a single featuring Baden Powell performing an instrumental song A Estrela e a Cruz. The single was part of a contest, and the idea was to give a chance to everybody to be Baden Powell partner on A Estrala e a Cruz. There was a form inside the album to be fulfilled with your lyrics to the song A Estrela e A Cruz. Unfortunately, I don't have this single and this is the missing piece of this post. I thought we could make the contest again using this single. I urge Loronixers to track this single down, so we can try to organize this contest 28 years after the first one. Tracks include:

Personnel

Baden Powell
(violao, voice)
Os Originais do Samba
(percussion, voice)

Track List

01 - Mesa Redonda (Baden Powell / Paulo César Pinheiro)
02 - Jongo (João Pernambuco)

05 - Odeon (Ernesto Nazareth)
06 - Queixa (Baden Powell / Vinicius de Moraes)
07 - Abismo de Rosas (Américo Jacomino "Canhoto")
08 - Ingênuo (Pixinguinha / Baden Powell)
09 - Canção das Flores (Baden Powell / Paulo César Pinheiro)

Dick Farney - Dick Farney e Seu Quinteto (1954)

Hello, good evening! I think cvllos and every Dick Farney enthusiast will be amazed to see another sought after 10-inch album from the early years. I'm amazed with my luck to get the second one in less than two weeks. I've been searching with cvllos the five Dick Farney first 10-inch LPs for many months. So far, this is the oldest available at Loronix, released in 1954, I'm sure with the help of our community the remaining ones should come very soon. Let's see.

This is Dick Farney - Dick Farney e Seu Quinteto (1954), for Continental, with Dick Farney approaching the Choro genre on Side A and Jazz (described as Fox-Trot by Continental) on Side B. This wonderful cover explains the quintet made of piano, bass, guitar, drums and vibes. Track 05 - Preludio Opus 32 is an Eduardo Dutra composition, which is Dick Farney father. Tracks include:

Video Challenge | Who is the mysterious singer?

This is a nice music video taken from a 1958 Brazilian movie, featuring Nelson Goncalves and another singer that I don't know who is. Get the chance and try to figure out who is he.

Hope uEnjoy!

Edson Frederico & Banda Metalurgica Dragao de Ipanema - Musica Pra Pular Brasileira (1980)

Hello, good evening! Loronix released nice Christmas albums this year. I have been wondering... why not release New Year's Eve albums? They don't exist, but in my understanding, a New Years Eve album - or Reveillon, as we use to call in Brazil - should be something dancing, groovy enough to bring happiness on every party. This is really the best what Loronix has to offer, Maestro Edson Frederico in charge of Banda Metalurgica Dragao de Ipanema performing dancing renditions of 30 Brazilian songs in the "reveillon style". Let's see.

This is Edson Frederico & Banda Metalurgica Dragao de Ipanema - Music Pra-Pular Brasileira (1980), for Polydor. The album title defines the overall experience with this joke with the expression Musica Popular Brasileira changed to Musica Pra-Pular Brasileira, with Pra-Pular meaning "for jumping" or "for kicking around". Gerson King Combo, Raimundo Sodre and Sandra Pera are special guests with everything produced and directed by Nelson Motta. Tracks include five medleys with a grand total of 30 songs. Tracks include:

05 - Chega Mais (Rita Lee / Roberto de Carvalho)

Dolores Duran - Dolores Duran Canta para Voce Dancar (1957)

I'm a really busy parrot today and against my will, we will have a reposting day at Loronix. However, this is a really important repost, which is the fist out of two albums recorded by Dolores Duran to Copacabana in this "Canta para Voce Dancar" series. This first was released in 1957, and the second, a year later in 1958, being this first my favorite. Let's see.

This is Dolores Duran - Dolores Duran Canta para Voce Dancar (1957), for Copacabana, presented here as an early 60's SOM release, a Copacabana subsidiary. Dolores Duran delivers beautiful renditions of a repertoire based on Brazilian and international standards. Maestro Severino Filho from Os Cariocas is in charge of arrangements and orchestra conduction. My highlight goes to 02 - Por Causa de Voce (Antonio Carlos Jobim / Dolores Duran) and the four Billy Blanco compositions, everything detailed bellow on track listing. Tracks include:

01 - Scapricciatiello (A. Vento)
02 - Por Causa de Você (Tom Jobim / Dolores Duran)

13 - Only You (A. Rand / B. Ram)
14 - Estatuto de Boite (Billy Blanco)

Conjunto BemBossa - Birimbau Sambas (1964)

It's 1 a.m. and I'm still busy working. It seems 2007 will never end. Anyway, I decided to come to Loronix and make something easy and straightforward, the repost of this album recorded in 1964 by this really obscure group, a nice and very curious Bossa Jazz instrumental album that deserves another chance, now featuring better cover scans and lossless FLAC option. Let's see.

This is Conjunto BemBossa - Birimbau Sambas (1964), for Destaque, featuring instrumental renditions of Brazilian songs in the Bossa Jazz style. Conjunto BemBossa has sax, piano, organ, bass, drums, accordion, guitar and percussion and it pretty obscure. If someone has a hint on musicians in this session, please use comment section to share this information if us, the album is very well played and it seems we have renowned musicians here. Tracks include:

01 - Consolação (Baden Powell / Vinicius de Moraes)
02 - A Canção Que Virou Você (Luis Antônio)
03 - Berimbau (Baden Powell / Vinicius de Moraes)
04 - Meu Nome É Ninguém (Haroldo Barbosa / Luis Reis)

Neusa Maria - A Melhor Cantora de 1956 (1957)

I like these celebration albums released by the old Brazilian record labels, perhaps it is my collector's side that drags me into this type of records. Here we go on Sinter's celebration of the 6th anniversary of the first Brazilian LP release in 1951 and instead of making a compilation with several artists, Sinter released a compilation of the acclaimed Neusa Maria, a Brazilian singer that I had the chance to know at Loronix with the help of the great Mr. E. Let's see.

This is Neusa Maria - A Melhor Cantora de 1956 (1957), for Sinter. Neusa Maria was elected by Jornal O Globo as "Detentora do Disco de Ouro" and by Club dos Cronistas do Disco as "A Melhor do Disco em 1956". Two great credentials for a great singer that released few and very hard to find albums, most of them in the 10-inch format. Such like this one. Tracks include:

01 - Nunca Jamais (L. Guerrero / Vrs. Nelson Ferreira) Bolero
02 - Que Será Será (Jay Livingston / Evans / Vrs. Nadir Corte Real) Valsa
03 - Culpada (Ivan Pires / Orlando Belsoli) Samba

06 - 31 de Dezembro (Fernando Lobo / Evaldo Ruy) Samba
07 - Última Canção (Guilherme Augusto Pereira) Fox-slow
08 - Decepção (Ibrahim Sued / Mário Jardim) Samba

Pedro Paulo Castro Neves & Michel Legrand - Pedro Paulo Castro Neves & Michel Legrand (1985)

I think this album is of a great curiosity, at least it is the feedback given for a group of friends since I started showing them a couple of days ago. I think it is also widely unknown for many people, even for fans of Michel Legrand. Being open and honest, little I know about Michel Legrand and All Music says he is a French composer, arranger, musician that made his fame writing for films, being an occasional Jazz artists, with a significant contribution in the style. Pedro Paulo Castro Neves is Oscar Castro Neves brother, and this album is his debut LP as a singer. Let's see.

This is Pedro Paulo Castro Neves & Michel Legrand - Pedro Paulo Castro Neves & Michel Legrand (1985), for Pointer, featuring a repertoire based on Brazilian standards with Michel Legrand, Oscar Castro Neves, Guinga and Egberto Gismonti compositions. Reading liner notes written by Michel Legrand, it is clear he plays the role of Pedro Paulo Castro Neves mentor, making arrangements, playing piano and making a duet with Pedro Paulo, performing nice scats on 05 - Canto de Ossanha - Berimbau by Baden Powell and Vinicius de Moraes. Recorded in Brazil, the session had great musicians, such as Lilian Carmona, Zeca Assumpcao and the legendary Joao Parayba from Trio Mocoto. Tracks include:

(piano, keyboards, arrangements, voice)

Egberto Gismonti & Nana Vasconcelos - Duo Gismonti & Vasconcellos | JazzBuhne Berlin (1984)

Hello, good evening! Christmas is over and I hope that everybody had a nice time as I did on these two days with my family. The show must go on and I'm pleased and amazed to repost this album released in the very beginning of Loronix, courtesy of our very good new friend Jacob F. from Israel. This album is very important to Loronix, several others websites placed links to this one, creating a continuous referral of new friends to our community. Let's see.

This is Egberto Gismonti & Nana Vasconcelos - Duo Gismonti & Vasconcellos | JazzBuhne Berlin (1984), for Repertoire Record and Tapes. If you take a look at the comment section you will see a nice discussion of several friends about this album, which I did not have idea about when first issued with this improvised cover artwork bellow the original one. Jacob F. made it, and now everything is clear, although I could not understand all the inserts provided by Jacob F. written in Germany. Hermeto Pascoal does not perform at this session as I thought he did. My special thanks to Jacob F. for providing this concert in the lossless FLAC format and for also including all CD booklet on a very easy to read PDF format. Tracks include:

Eumir Deodato - Skyscrapers (1973)

This album will cross Christmas celebration until the next Loronix update in December 26th and I have to admit it was a very difficult choice among several picks I had available. I think were will be in really good company with this classic Eumir Deodato album that is unexplainably out of print. Skycrapers was released just after Prelude and Eumir Deodato big hit Also Sprach Zarathustra and this is what makes this album really amazing. Let's see.

This is Eumir Deodato - Skyscrapers (1973), first issue by CTI and released as Os Catedraticos 73 for Equipe in Brazil. Eumir Deodato came to Brazil to record this album in July 1972, and I think this decision was important to bring to this session the original Os Catedraticos members, which includes Durval Ferreira, Sergio Barroso and others. Eumir Deodato did it and could also bring several other great musicians, including Helcio Milito and Bebeto from Tamba Trio, Orlandivo, Ze Menezes and Mamao from Azimuth. This is one of the Eumir Deodato LPs that I like most and I hope you have a lot of fun with Skyscrapers as I did today. I also wish a very nice Christmas to everybody. Tracks include:

Personnel

Eumir Deodato
(piano, organ, arrangements, conduction)
Ivan Conti "Mamao"
(drums)
Sergio Barroso

(percussion)
Marvin Stamm, John Frosk
(piston, flugelhorn)

Orquestra Os Bossambistas - So Danco Samba

Caetano Rodrigues spent months on a quest that ended last week when he finally got one of the few missing piece on his great collection, which is the album shown just bellow the first picture, Bossa Brass - Bossa Brass Apresenta a Maravilhosa Musica de Antonio Carlos Jobim (no date), for Plaza. During all this time, sorry Caetano, this album was right in front of my face by a pretty unknown reissue by the obscure label DIMP as Orquestra Os Bossambistas - So Danco Samba (no date). Everyday I learn a new thing at Loronix. Let's see.

This is Orquestra Os Bossambistas - So Danco Samba (no date), for DIMP. First thing, do not let the group name cheats you, we do not have an orchestra here, but a constellation of Brazilian musicians together for a session to perform instrumental renditions of Antonio Carlos Jobim repertoire. When Caetano spoke about Bossa Brass, I did not know the session had names such like Fats Elpidio, Geraldo Vespar and Waltel Branco, playing bass. This is a great album with another awesome cover taken from another album released by Plaza as Os Saxsambistas Brasileiros, already available at Loronix. Stay with Bossa Brass or Orquestra Os Bossambistas, just pick up your favorite. Tracks include:

Music Video | Armandinho & Conjunto Epoca de Ouro - Assanhado (Jacob do Bandolim)

Hello, good evening! Let's start today with a music video sent by a friend of us as a YouTube link. By the way, I receive a lot of video recommendations to Loronix, but I don't have space to address the majority, that's why it is necessary to release the ones that I consider of great interest and with some kind of uniqueness. Such like this one, featuring Armandinho and Conjunto Epoca de Ouro, performing Assanhado (Jacob do Bandolim) on Brazilian TV.

Hope uEnjoy!

Elizeth Cardoso - Elizeth Cardoso (1976)

What else can I say about one of the greatest Brazilian divas of all time, Elizeth Cardoso? This album was not on my radar until AdHoc comes to me a couple of months ago calling my attention to it. AdHoc was right; this is another classic Elizeth Cardoso LP, recorded in 1976, demonstrating that Elizeth kept a high quality standard even on her late years. It seems Elizeth Cardoso was always in charge of every detail of his albums, from the repertoire selection to musicians and arrangements. Thanks AdHoc, without your hint I could not make this one. Let's see.

This is Elizeth Cardoso - Elizeth Cardoso (1976), for Copacabana, with arrangements by Geraldo Vespar, Nelsinho, Magro (MPB-4) and Chiquinho de Moraes, produced by Moacyr Silva, delivering also his beautiful tenor sax playing on tracks 03 - Cada Dia and 05 - Alternativa. Copacabana did not credit remaining musicians in the set. It is also unbelievable this album never had a CD reissue. Tracks include:

01 - De Partida (João Bosco / Aldir Blanc)
02 - Entenda a Rosa (João Nogueira)
03 - Cada Dia (Ivor Lancellotti)
04 - Minha Verdade (Dona Ivone Lara / Delcio Carvalho)
05 - Alternativa (Paulo Valdez / Otávio de Morais)
06 - Aviso (Flávio Moreira)
07 - Rio Seco (Romildo / Toninho Nascimento)
08 - Canção do Velho Cais (Candinho / Paulo César Pinheiro)
09 - Luzes na Ribalta (Vital Lima / Hermínio Bello de Carvalho)
10 - A Pedra Não Voa (Nanai / René Bittencourt)
11 - Somos Nós (Paulo Valdez / Lando)
12 - Arrego (J. Velloso / Andó)
13 - Café na Cama (Nazareno / Édson)

Orquestra Armorial - Chamada (1975)

Hello, good evening! Loronix has different segments of audiences, or friends, as I like to call. Each group has a different purpose and a unique way to interact with the website. The biggest group, with more than 50% of share is the friends who just love the music from Brazil. Inside this big group, there are many sub-categories, perhaps one day we speak about these sub-categories, but let's approach the remaining groups. They are several; we have journalists, people who work for the entertainment industry, collectors, etc.

I want to homage today a very special group, with several good friends identified, a group of people that works outside of Brazil with the music of Brazil on colleges, universities and institutions. They are mainly academic researchers and they find at Loronix a place to get in touch with music and information they would never had the chance to reach using any other channel. The first album we made by Orquestra Armorial made some noise between this group of friends. I received several enthusiastic emails with compliments of making this really unique orchestra available and this post is to render my small homage to these nice and very serious friends that makes a very important work promoting the music from Brazil.

Marilia Medalha started her career in the 60's, at the city of Niterio, Rio de Janeiro, performing with Sergio Mendes on local nightclubs. Later, she became an active performer on Festivais da Cancao, TV shows and recordings, working together with renowned Brazilian artists, such as: Edu Lobo, Gilberto Gil, Caetano Veloso, Toquinho, Vinicius de Moraes, which is Marilia Medalha most frequent composer partner. In spite of this great start and the solid albums released in the late 60's, Marilia Medalha career did not evolve when entering the 70's, being this album one of her last ones. Let's see.

Zaccarias e Seu Conjunto de Boite - Uma Noite no Country Club (1958)

Hello, good evening! Here we go on a truly amazing album recorded in 1958 by Maestro Zaccarias. This great cover features Zaccarias e Seu Conjunto de Boite at The Country Club of Rio de Janeiro, the most sophisticated club in Rio that is very hard to be admitted and with a very long list of really famous people barred in the entrance.

The Country Club already exists in Ipanema and I found today this awesome picture of Ipanema in the beginning of the last century, featuring the tennis courts of Country Club. Take a look how Ipanema was an empty place at the time; you can click the picture to get a larger version to see the courts and neighborhood details.

This is Zaccarias e Seu Conjunto de Boite - Uma Noite no Country Club (1958), for Columbia. If it is almost impossible to get inside the Country Club, at least we can check this picture with Cristo Redentor rising on the background and also listen to the music performed there in 1958 by Maestro Zaccarias and his group of top-notch musicians. Zaccarias had a contract with Country Club to perform every Sunday night with his Conjunto, featuring the legendary pianist Fats Elpidio, the bassist Bill and the drummer Romeu. In this session, they had also the participation of the special guests the pistonist Maurilio and Barao at the rhythm section. I think no one should skip this one. Tracks include:

Personnel

Maestro Zaccarias

Dick Farney e Quinteto - Jazz Festival Nr. 1 | Jam Session (1956)

Dick Farney is an artist that has the preference of many Loronixers. I think everybody had already the chance of taking one of his albums available at Loronix with Dick Farney performing as an instrumentalist or singing. He was very active on recordings, with more than 150 albums on a career that spans decades, starting in the mid 40's and ending in the late 80's. Dick Farney recorded 5 albums in the 10-inch format and I got really surprised today when I realize this is the first in the format made available at Loronix. I think this release will make the day of many friends, especially cvllos, which is the greatest Dick Farney fan I have ever seen. Let's see.

This is Dick Farney e Quinteto - Jazz Festival Nr. 1 | Jam Session (1956), for RGE, recorded live at Teatro de Cultura Artistica, Sao Paulo as part of Primeiro Festival Brasileiro de Jazz, organized by Jazz Club de Sao Paulo. Dick Farney e Quinteto line-up the same musicians available at the acclaimed Jazz After Midnight (1956), featuring, Dick Farney, Case, Rubinho, Choo Viana and Ismael Campiglia, credited as an amateur musician. So far, I could not identify each instrument Ismael Campiglia plays. Jazz Festival Nr. 1 is a short session, limited by the size of the 10-inch format, but is great music with a great performance by the legendary Case on sax. Tracks include:

Pedroca, Seu Piston e Seu Conjunto - Atendendo a Pedidos... (1959)

Hello, good evening! It is very hard to track down information about artists that everybody knows and it is, in theory, impossible to find information about artists that we never heard about. This is what happens with Pedroca, a Brazilian piston player that I had the chance to listen for the first time this week. As far I could search, Pedroca was active on recordings since his first 78 rpm for Todamerica in 1950 until his last known album, which is this one, recorded in 1959. Let's see.

This is Pedroca, Seu Piston e Seu Conjunto - Atendendo a Pedidos... (1959), for Sinter, featuring Pedroca performing a repertoire of Brazilian and international standards, including a nice rendition of Raul de Barros Na Gloria. Atendendo a Pedidos... stays in the middle of a Para Dancar and a Gafieira LP with very nice piston player by Pedroca. I don't need to say this cover artwork is really fantastic; let's keep the pace of beautiful covers today, such as we did yesterday. Tracks include:

01 - Chega de Saudade (Tom Jobim / Vinicius de Moraes)
02 - Prece de Amor (René Bittencourt)
03 - Que Te Parece (Julio Gutierrez)

11 - Na Glória (Ari dos Santos / Raul de Barros)
12 - Lamento (Djalma Ferreira / Luis Antônio)

Fagner - Quem Viver Chorara (1978)

This is at least an unusual release to Loronix, but I think this album is really worth checking out. There are much of my personal preferences on my decision to make available this really nice record that as far as I could check, never had a CD reissue. Raimundo Fagner, or Fagner, was very important on my background as an amateur musician and if you woke up this morning with an inquisitive mind, this is the right pick to get something really different from everything you have heard before at Loronix. Let's see.

This is Fagner - Quem Viver Chorara (1978), for Columbia, produced and arranged by Fagner. I wrote, "arranged by Fagner" and this is what makes this album a wonderful experience. Quem Viver Chorara is the kind of album that you can listen by the arrangements, very well done by Fagner. On every different spin you make there is new think that you did not realize it was there before. The album opens with Revelacao, a blockbuster that everybody in Brazil will remember at the fist seconds by the amazing guitar of Robertinho de Recife, don't let this first commercial track cheats you, from the second song until the end, everything turns beautiful, professional and very well played by a constellation of musicians in this session. I urge Loronixers to feedback this release. Tracks include:

Personnel

Fagner

Manfredo e Seu Conjunto - Bossa Nova Nova Bossa (1963)

I was really decided to make a classic Samba Jazz album as the last post of the day and I hope my choice will make Loronix friends really pleased. It has been a while since we made available an album by Manfredo Fest, a gifted pianist that released several albums in the style in the 60's. Bossa Nova Nova Bossa features Manfredo Fest with a Conjunto, not as a traditional trio, and accompanied by great musicians. This album was first made available with the help of Low Cost Music and now comes back to Loronix as it is no longer commercially available. Let's see.

This is Manfredo e Seu Conjunto - Bossa Nova Nova Bossa (1963), for RGE, one of the earliest Manfredo Fest releases featuring a repertoire of Bossa Nova standards performed in Samba Jazz style. In this session Manfredo Fest plays piano, sax and organ, being also in charge of arrangements.
