Pernambuco do Pandeiro e Seu Regional - Batucando no Morro (1958)

Hello, good evening! Another important album being reissued at Loronix, which is also one of the first posts made available here. It is really nice to bring it back to our discography. By the time it was made available in August 2006, I thought it was the first participation of Hermeto Pascoal on recordings. I was wrong, this is his second album. The first is Clovis Pereira – Ritmos Alucinantes (1956), with Hermeto Pascoal playing accordion in two tracks. I’m searching this album and I would be really pleased if someone can make it for our discography. Batucando no Morro is the first album were Hermeto Pascoal plays in all tracks. I will keep my original writing with minor adjustments. Let’s see.

This is Pernambuco do Pandeiro e Seu Regional – Batucando no Morro (1958), for Tiger, featuring Hermeto Pascoal accordion in all tracks. Brazilian regional groups were assembled by guitar, accordion, flute, pandeiro and cavaquinho. They were active from the 30’s to 60’s. Hermeto Pascoal can be easily identified at this cover holding an accordion. Tracks include:

Newton Mendonca Tribute - Em Cada Estrela uma Cancao (1961)

Hello, good evening! I will try to bring back two important posts to Loronix today (I hope I can made the second!), starting with one of the most awesome contribution made by a very good friend, the influential Bossa Nova collector Caetano Rodrigues. This is a tribute album to Newton Mendonca, a truly important Brazilian musician that passed away very early, but left a strong contribution to Brazilian popular music. I will keep my original writing made at August 2007. Let’s see.

> original post:

It is very hard to start writing for such post. This was supposed to be first today and I had to postpone guaranteeing a respectful homage to Newton Mendonca, the great musician and songwriter that left us very early. Newton Mendonça left us in 1960 with the very young age of 33. He was childhood friend and partner of Antonio Carlos Jobim and the author of some of the most important Bossa Nova songs, such as: Desafinado, Foi a Noite, Samba de Uma Nota So, Meditacao, So Saudade, among others. Caetano Rodrigues sent this fantastic Copacabana label tribute album that I did not known the existence and I'm very proud to make it available on this respectful homage to Newton Mendonca.

This is Em Cada Estrela uma Cancao (1961), for Copacabana, featuring Ernani Filho, Marisa Gata Mansa and Carminha Mascarenhas renditions to Newton Mendonca compositions. Really beautiful tribute álbum with Orchestra conducted by Maestro Pachequinho backing Ernani Filho and Marisa Gata Mansa. Carminha Mascarenhas has "Conjunto" accompaniment. A constellation of musicians performs in this session. Personnel listing is available bellow, as well tracks. Tracks include:

Os Cariocas - Minha Namorada (1990)

Hello, good evening! I found this album on one of those old vinyl shops in Rio, and I always thought it was just a compilation with tracks taken from previous albums. If I knew this is the first album recorded by Os Cariocas after a 21 years hiatus, I would have made it available at Loronix earlier. Minha Namorada features a repertoire with the greatest Os Cariocas tunes. The cover brings autographs of each component, where Quartera signs in place of Luiz Roberto, who unfortunately died in this period. Confirmation is needed, but I believe this album was signed by Os Cariocas after the tragic Luiz Roberto passing. Let’s see.

This is Os Cariocas – Minha Namorada (1990), for Som Livre. It is unbelievable this album is out of print. The recording quality is amazing and I really recommend that you take good headphones to hear the sophisticated vocal arrangements made by Severino Filho. Os Cariocas is really a unique and very special vocal group. Tracks include:

Personnel

Severino Filho
(piano, 1st voice, arrangements)
Badeco
(violao, 2nd voice)
Luiz Roberto

Quartera
(drums, 4th voice)

Bola Sete - O Extraordinario Bola Sete (1962)

Hello, good evening! I thought I knew something about Brazilian popular music before opening Loronix, but when I met respected collectors such like Caetano Rodrigues and Jorge Mello, I realized I was totally ignorant about several things. Jorge Mello provides the show today, showing this truly nice Bola Sete LP recorded for Odeon in 1962 featuring an organist, not a standard musician, but the mighty Luiz Eça dueling with Bola Sete on electric organ, an unusual instrument for Luiz Eça. Let’s see.

This is Bola Sete – O Extraordinario Bola Sete (1962), for Odeon, featuring Luiz Eca at organ in seven tracks. I think you should take this one for a hearing. These early Bola Sete LPs released by Odeon never had a chance to reach the CD age and it is not every day you have the chance to hear Luiz Eca playing organ. Bola Sete is not alone at the remaining five tracks, he has the accompaniment of another unusual formation, three piston players. Unfortunately, remaining musicians in this session were not credited by Odeon. Tracks include:

Personnel

Bola Sete
(guitar)
Luiz Eca
(organ)

Elizeth Cardoso - O Inverno do Meu Tempo (1979)

Hello, good evening! I was busy tonight, working on new features to Loronix, which is an update and a complete redesign of our album search application, Loronix Find it. I like to develop new things to Loronix. It is very important to improve Loronix on regular basis. It is also very fun to make such things. So fun, I miss the time for this update. By the way, a required upgrade of a really solid album released in the end of 2006, and recorded by one of my favorite singers, Elizeth Cardoso. Let’s see.

This is Elizeth Cardoso – O Inverno do Meu Tempo (1979), for Som Livre, featuring Elizeth Cardoso backed by a breathtaking cast of musicians, including Baden Powell performing his composition Velho Amigo on track 11. It is fantastic how Elizeth Cardoso delivers an above the average performance in such period of her career. She seems to be always in control of everything, from the repertoire to musicians she gathers to recording sessions. I’m tired to research, but I cannot remember a CD reissue of this classic album. Luiz Vieira - Retalhos do Nordeste (1958) with orchestra by Moacir Santos

Hello, good evening! There was a time at Loronix where Saturday was a day devoted to Samba releases. We had a lot of fun on those Saturdays, many new friends were attracted and the initiative was really successful. Saturday was also a day dedicated to experiments with the launch of genres that are not regularly released at Loronix.

This is the idea behind this post. I have this album with me for a long time, but never considered a candidate to Loronix. In spite of this beautiful cover, the vinyl is very – I said VERY – scratched and I could not remove all imperfections. Retalhos do Nordeste brings a singer never released before and features arrangements of Maestro Moacir Santos. Let’s see.

This is Luiz Vieira – Retalhos do Nordeste (1958), for Copacabana, featuring a not credited conjunto regional on Side A and orchestra on Side B with arrangements by Maestro Moacir Santos. Luiz Vieira is a Brazilian singer and composer with more than 300 compositions recorded by renowned Brazilian artists. Retratos do Nordeste is Luiz Vieira first LP. Tracks include:

01 - Meus Canarin (Luiz Vieira / Timóteo Martins)
02 - Na Asa do Vento (Luiz Vieira / João do Vale)
03 - O Coco É Meu (Luiz Vieira)
04 - Maria Filó (O Danado do Trem) (Luiz Vieira / João do Vale)
05 - Embolada Mudou (Luiz Vieira)
06 - Menino de Braçanã (Luiz Vieira / Arnaldo Passos)
07 - O Vaqueiro (Luiz Vieira)
08 - Os Olhinhos do Menino (Luiz Vieira)
09 - Cantiga da Lembrança (Luiz Vieira / Epaminonas Souza)
10 - Bicha Coirãna (Luiz Vieira)
