Conjunto Epoca de Ouro - Conjunto Epoca de Ouro (1975)

Last Saturday, I had the tough mission to announce to our community the passing of the Brazilian violao player Cesar Faria. In that time I got really disappointed to make a tribute with no music and this post can be considered a complement for last Saturday tribute. Cesar Faria was founder and member of Conjunto Epoca de Ouro until his passing and I'm now glad to show Loronixers an album by Conjunto Epoca de Ouro and also really amazed by the music they play at this record. If remaining albums by Conjunto Epoca de Ouro are such like this one, we need to track them all. Let's see.

This is Conjunto Epoca de Ouro - Conjunto Epoca de Ouro (1975), for Continental, featuring Cesar Faria and his Conjunto Epoca de Ouro on 12 renditions of classic Choro compositions by Paulinho da Viola, Jacob do Bandolim, Villa Lobos, Chico Buarque de Hollanda, among many others. A hint is necessary, use speakerphones to identify each instrument, hearing the individual performances of each Conjunto Epoca de Ouro member, it is a very nice experience. Personnel listing is credited bellow, including special guests participations. Tracks include:

Challenge | Who are They?

This should be really fun! The first friend who answers correctly who are (1), (2), (A) and (B), wins a Rapidshare 1-month Premium account. You will have no much trouble with (A) and (B), while (1) and (2) should be the great battle.

Hope uEnjoy!

3º Festival In Jazz | Tributo ao Victor Assis Brasil

A entrada é franca.

Gal Costa e Caetano Veloso - Domingo (1967)

This is a long time request of many Loronixers, it has gone out of print and it is finally being made available at Loronix. Domingo is both Gal Costa and Caetano Veloso - with his last name spelled on the cover with two Ls - debut LP, recorded before the creation of the Tropicalia movement. This is very important, I file this album as Bossa Nova, instead of Tropicalia. Let's see.

This is Gal e Caetano Velloso - Domingo (1967), for Philips, featuring lovely Caetano Veloso compositions performed together with Gal Costa. I think all these Caetano Veloso tunes - with some additional songs by Gilberto Gil, Edu Lobo and Sidney Miller - are well known for many Loronixers and some are still performed on radios and concerts on regular basis.

Domingo features songs that were later recorded by Joao Gilberto, such as: Avarandado and Coracao Vagabundo, everything arranged by Dori Caymmi, Roberto Menescal and Francis Hime. I thought I would find an average album performed by great artists at the beginning of their career, but Doming is solid, Gal Costa sings beautifully and the underrated Caetano Veloso violao playing shines on each track. I urge Loronixers to feedback this album, considered lost on my radar, but a real treasure. Musicians were not credited. Tracks include:

01 - Coração Vagabundo (Caetano Veloso)
02 - Onde Eu Nasci Passa Um Rio (Caetano Veloso)
03 - Avarandado (Caetano Veloso)
04 - Um Dia (Caetano Veloso)
05 - Domingo (Caetano Veloso)
06 - Nenhuma Dor (Caetano Veloso)
07 - Candeias (Edu Lobo)
08 - Remelexo (Caetano Veloso)
09 - Minha Senhora (Gilberto Gil / Torquato Neto)
10 - Quem Me Dera (Caetano Veloso)
11 - Maria Joana (Sidney Miller)
12 - Zabele (Gilberto Gil / Torquato Neto)

Aloysio, acordeonista, pianista, arranjador, oferece ao seu público: - Sonhando com Voce (1957)

In the beginning of 2007, I released a really nice album recorded by Aloysio Figueiredo with Altamiro Carrilho, which is the one at the small picture at you left, Altamiro Carrilho & Aloysio Figueiredo - O Melhor para Dancar, Flauta e Orgao (1962), here. Since then, I have been looking for some other LP recorded by Aloysio Figueiredo to check if he could keep the very good organ playing delivered with Altamiro Carrilho. I found this one, which is Aloysio debut LP, but the vinyl was scratched and the music is not so great as I thought. In the other hand, the cover is one of those fantastic ones delivered by Copacabana. So I decided to make it anyway, no Rapidshare, since the quality of the vinyl transfer is not the standard we use to see at Loronix in the last months. Let's see.

This is Aloysio - Sonhando com Voce (1957), for Copacanana, which is Aloysio debut LP, performing cuts based on Brazilian and International music. Aloysio plays piano and accordion, probably deciding which one to adopt, since in his later records we only played piano. Sonhando com Voce was recorded inside the studios of Radio Record. Tracks include:

01 - Sonhando Com Você (Aloísio Figueiredo / Nelson Figueiredo / Moacir Peixoto)
02 - Me Lo Dijo Adela (O. Del Portal)
03 - Without My Lover (M. P. Gerard / B. Michel / P. Guitton)
04 - Venezuela (A. Corenzo / E. Franssen / J. Stevens)
05 - Soy Un Extraño (Gonzalo Curiel)
06 - Mi Último Fracasso (Alfredo Gil)
07 - Only You (B. Ram / A. Rand)
08 - Ave Maria (Vicente Paiva / Jaime Redondo)
09 - Fui Eu (Aloísio Figueiredo / Nelson Figueiredo)
10 - Que Será Será (Jay Livingston / R. Evans)
11 - Evocação (Nelson Ferreira)
12 - Uma Loira (Hervé Cordovil)

Elizeth Cardoso & Cyro Monteiro - A Bossa Eterna de Elizeth & Cyro Vol. 2 (1969)

I think we could not make better than closing this nice day with a solid Samba album performed by a duo. This should fulfill the needs of those in the mood of something very easy to listen and very connected with the music from Brazil. Actually, this is an upgrade of an already released album, now improved on graphics and music, including the FLAC files option, which is gradually positioning Loronix as a reference. Let's see what we have here.

This is Elizeth Cardoso & Cyro Monteiro - A Bossa Eterna de Elizeth & Cyro Vol. 2 (1969), for Copacabana, the second of of two volumes of "A Bossa Eterna" LPs released by Elizeth Cardoso and Cyro Monteiro for Copacabana. The first volume should be upgraded in the forthcoming week. Elizeth Cardoso is a singer that does not need to be introduced, one of the greatest Brazilian singers ever and Cyro Monteiro is a renowned Brazilian Samba singer and composer, active between the 40's to the early 70s, considered by Vinicius de Moraes the "Best Brazilian Singer of all times". Caculinha e Seu Conjunto backs the duo; Copacabana did not credit remaining musicians. Tracks include:

I'm proud to announce that Loronix was awarded as 2007 Best Music Blog of the Year, among the 1,450 blogs available at the might Gravy Bread and his MEGA SUPER MAMMOTH MP3 Blog List, the best music blog directory available at the Internet. This is a very important award to Loronix and to our great community. I'm taking an excerpt of Gravy Bread award announcement and I urge Loronixers to know more at his MEGA SUPER MAMMOTH MP3 Blog List.

LORONIX (loronix.blogspot.com) is, in the opinion of Mega Super Mammoth, the very best music blog in the world, and is therefore bestowed the debatably singular honor of being named the 2007 Mega Super Mammoth MP3 Music Blog of the Year. I will be sending a modest cash prize soon to Zeca via Paypal in appreciation for his considerable efforts. Not only does his blog offer ample and consistent content (the best and often rarest Brazilian and Brasil-themed music LPs from roughly the 1950s through the 1980s and beyond) but Zeca has succeeded grandly in creating a highly interactive web experience and cultivated a thriving international community of musicians, music lovers and scholars. Ricardo Camargos - Piano Pixinguinha (1996)

AdHoc sent us a Masterpiece, a piano only album with compositions written by one of the greatest Brazilian popular music genius, Alfredo da Rocha Vianna, also known as Pixinguinha. It is the first time we are making available at Loronix an album with Pixinguinha music from the start until the end. Piano Pixinguinha was recorded by Ricardo Camargos, a gifted pianist with a classical background with a professional career dedicated to popular music. Let's see.

This is Ricardo Camargos - Piano Pixinguinha (1995), for Velas. In the years of 1993 to 1995, Ricardo Camargos made a research on files of Biblioteca Nacional do Rio de Janeiro, gathering never released compositions by Pixinguinha. The outcome of his project, called Piano Pixinguinha is this album, where Ricardo Camargos performs 11 never released Pixinguinha compositions, playing as found on his research, exactly as the writings of Pixinguinha he found at Biblioteca Nacional. The remaining 6 compositions are also Pixinguinha with adaptations by Ricardo Camargos.

AdHoc says, and I agree, this is a very important album, featuring Pixiguinha compositions that we never had the chance to hear before. Piano Pixinguinha was recorded at Sala Cecilia Meirelles, Rio de Janeiro. Tracks include:

Hello, good evening! Great award received from Gravy Bread, thanks once again. Anyway, the music cannot stop, but needs to continue in a great style this time. We need to resume with something that represents the music from Brazil on a very special way and also giving a chance to new friends that are coming from Gravy Bread and Totally Fuzzy -- another wonderful website aggregates Music Blogs, don't miss it, right here: http://totallyfuzzy.blogspot.com -- to make contact with a great artist. Varios Artistas - 2º Concerto de Jazz de Camera no Teatro Municipal (1960)

Here we go on an album that does not need to be introduced. However, before skipping my writing to scroll personnel listing, be sure that all credits for this post goes to Mauro R.V., the luck owner of this vinyl that kindly sent it to our community this morning. Here we have an album that everybody was tracking down for years, including Caetano Rodrigues and several other serious collectors. Let's see.

This is 2º Concerto de Jazz de Camera no Teatro Municipal (1960), for Prestige, featuring Dick Farney Trio, K-Ximbinho Tenteto, Brazilian Jazz Quartet and All-Stars. I'm dizzy!

This concert was recorded live at Teatro Municipal in Rio de Janeiro for an estimated audience of 2,500 privileged friends. The Jazz critic Paulo Santos was in charge of production and also presented the event. Thanks once again Mauro R.V., Loronixers will be pleased with this fantastic record. Tracks include:

Guimaraes e Seu Conjunto - Dancando no Fred's (1959)

Hello, good evening! Such as yesterday, Loronix starts today with another amazing cover artwork released by the obscure Internacional label. If we look back earlier Internacional label releases, we will see that cover artwork is really their business, as well their vinyl, very solid, heavy, playing very nice after 48 years. Let's see.

This is Guimaraes e Seu Conjunto - Dancando no Fred's (1959), for Internacional. Dancando no Fred's is the second album released by Antonio Guimaraes, an obscure Brazilian pianist that had some worldwide recognition for his album "Fabuloso!" recorded in 1963 for Chantecler, featuring a very early Airto Moreira playing drums. It is worth checking out if Airto Moreira has another participation on Antonio Guimaraes albums, since most of there records do not credit musicians. Anyway, the fans of the "Para Dancar" style will be really pleased after some days of hiatus. Tracks include:

01 - Nel Blu Dipinto Di Blu (Modugno / Migliacci)
02 - I Love You Samantha (Cole Porter)
03 - Dançando no Fred's (Antônio Guimarães)
04 - Essa Diaba (Ary Barroso)

Bob Fleming Quartet - Sax Espetacular (1958)

Hello, good evening! I think this cover artwork alone worth any effort made to have this album available to our community. Actually, I would make this post even with the worse music ever recorded in history. However, this amazing cover brings inside an amazing album, which is the first LP recorded by Moacyr Silva with the alias of Bob Fleming. Let's see.

This is Bob Fleming Quartet - Sax Espetacular (1958), for Musidisc, featuring Moacyr Silva tenor sax with not credited musicians assembled on a quartet with sax, bass, drums and piano. Taking in consideration the release date, there is a great possibility of Chaim Lewak at the piano, being the remaining drummer and bassist a guessing exercise, since several different musicians were credited on late 50's Moacyr Silva albums. Tracks include:

01 - Fascination (F. D. Marchetti)
02 - Indian Summer (V. Herbert / A. Dubin)
03 - Can't I (L. Levett)
04 - Sonny Boy (A. Johnson / De Sylva / L. Brown)
05 - There Goes My Heart (B. Davis / A. Silver)
06 - Tammy (Jay Livingston / R. Evans)
07 - It's Not For Me To Say (A. Stillman / R. Allen)
08 - Around The World In 80 Days (V. Young)
09 - A Portrait Of Jeannie (J. R. Robinson / G. Burdge)
10 - So Rare (J. Sharpe / J. Herst)
11 - E'bello (Vignali / Danpa)
12 - Whithout a Song (W. Rose / V. Youmsn)

Os Titulares do Ritmo - Os Titulares do Ritmo Interpretam Antonio Carlos Jobim e Vinicius de Moraes (1973)

This post is making anniversary today, it was first released one year ago and there are several reasons for this reposting, this is an amazing album, recorded by a renowned vocal group that recorded several albums throughout decades. For those reasons that we cannot explain, I have been searching for another album during this whole year and I could not find a single LP. Perhaps now, bringing this one to the front page, some Loronix friend can help us on finding another album from Os Titulares do Ritmo. Many friends request them. Let's see.

This is Os Titulares do Ritmo - Os Titulares do Ritmo Interpretam Antonio Carlos Jobim e Vinicius de Moraes (1973), for Continental. Os Titulares do Ritmo were assembled in the early 40's having a very active career that lasts until the late 90's, both on recording and live performances. Os Titulares do Ritmo are a vocal and instrumental sextet, created in 1941 at a college, a institution in Minas Gerais for visually impaired people, all six members of Os Titulares do Ritmo are blind.

This beautiful tribute to Antonio Carlos Jobim and Vinicius de Moraes LP has the participation of Maestro Luiz Arruda Paes as instrumental arranger, while Os Titulares do Ritmo are in charge of vocal arrangements, very professional and sophisticated arrangements, by the way. I think you should not miss this one, even if you have already visited the original post, we have major upgrades on cover scans and music, including the FLAC files option. Tracks include:

Ademilde Fonseca - A La Miranda (1958)

Ademilde Fonseca was recently introduced to Loronixers, and the feedback given was better than my best estimates. Ademilde Fonseca is considered one of the major artists of Chorinho style, which is Choro with lyrics, such Brasileirinho (Waldyr Azevedo) a famous song on both instrumental and sung renditions. Let's see what Ademilde Fonseca brings to Loronixers this time.

This is Ademilde Fonseca - A La Miranda (1958), for Odeon, the first album recorded by Ademilde Fonseca in the 12-inch format. A La Miranda is a tribute to Carmem Miranda with Ademilde Fonseca renditions to popular tunes performed by Carmem Miranda, a short set with a running time of 29 minutes, but it seems we have much more, Ademilde Fonseca sings really fast, as I never heard. This will be a real treat to Ademilde Fonseca and Chorinho style fans. Tracks include:

01 - Camisa Listada (Assis Valente)

12 - Cachorro Vira-lata (Alberto Ribeiro)
13 - Adeus Batucada (Sinval Silva)

Bacamarte - Depois do Fim (1983)

Hello, good evening. I will start this Monday showing something very different from what we use to see available at Loronix. In spite of being a Brazilian progressive rock album, I think this music really belongs to Loronix. Every friend with a bit of curiosity and willing to hear a masterpiece on a style never made available at Loronix should take this one for a hearing. I was hunting this album for a long time; in fact, the hunting is not over, this is another of those albums that I had when young that had disappeared from my possession. Anyway, better summarize with a statement, this is a MASTERPIECE. Let's see.

This is Bacamarte - Depois do Fim (1983), for Som-Arte Discos. I'm making available the 1995 Som-Arte CD reissue from the original 1983 first and independent issue. Depois do Fim is internationally acclaimed, I read some reviews a couple of minutes ago at progarchives.com, which is the ultimate resource for progressive rock music, and I need to highlight an excerpt of a review made by James Unger, an official progarchives.com reviewer, as follows:

"If you were going to buy only 1 cd this year you should make it BACAMARTE's "Depois Do Fim". Brazillian progressive rock masterpiece with incredible musicianship and the gorgeous voice of Jane Duboc, who adds an Annie Haslam influence to the music. BACAMARTE delivers killer guitar with amazing keyboards around some superb melodies. Songs change themes, tempo and moods frequently with epic delivery. "Depois Do Fim" was well recorded and has been masterfully transferred to CD offering excellent sound quality, instrument distinction and speaker separation. An exceptionally intoxicating album I endorse with the greatest of convictions... wonderful music." - James Unger, progarchives.com

Do I need to say more? I don't think so. Tracks include:

Personnel

Jane Duboc
(vocals)
Mario Neto
(guitar, violao)
Sergio Villarim
(keyboards)
Delto Simas
(electric bass, acoustic bass)
Marcos Verissimo
(drums)

Caetano Veloso - Joia (1975)

I'm feeling great showing Loronixers one of the artists that I like most and one of my all time favorites albums. Caetano Veloso released Joia in 1975, just before he came back to Brazil after the UK exile. I had the original vinyl issue of this masterpiece, exactly how it is at the second picture, just the birds. The cover portraying Caetano Veloso nude with his wife and son -- the first one -- was censored, being back further on a CD reissue. I was wondering today how and when I miss my original vinyl. Anyway, this is one of those albums that you will need several times before getting around it and the surprise will never cease. Let's see.

This is Caetano Veloso - Joia (1975), for Philips. Forgive me, it is very hard to review something that you like very much. Joia is quite different from anything you heard before from Caetano discography, everything is reduced, some tracks have only violao accompaniment and others have only voices. Quarteto em Cy is a special guest on track 02 - Gua and personnel features Gilberto Gil, Tutty Moreno, Pena Froes, Altamiro Carrilho, among others. I urge Loronixers to send feedback on this release, one of the records that I like most. Tracks include:

Andre Penazzi - Orgao, Samba, Percussao Vol. 2 (1963)

A couple of minutes ago, an anonymous friend just wrote a comment on Cesar Faria Tribute post with the whole lyrics of Danca da Solidao, by Paulinho da Viola. I'm moved, thanks a lot, some people say that anonymous comment should be not allowed and this comment comes to prove that anonymous comment really worth.

Anyway, the show must go on and let's start this Sunday with an artist favorite of several Loronixers, Andre Penazzi.

This is Andre Penazzi - Orgao, Samba, Percussao Vol. 2 (1963), for Audio Fidelity, presented here with the stereo 1966 Som Maior reissue. This is the Volume 2 from a series of four albums titled Orgao, Samba, Percussao by Andre Penazzi on his early recordings for Audio Fidelity. This series is considered his best and are harder to find than Andre Penazzi later releases for Som Maior, Philips and Bervely. Tracks include:

01 - O Apito no Samba (Luis Bandeira / Luis Antônio)
02 - Zelão (Sergio Ricardo)
03 - A Tua Vida É Um Segredo (Lamartine Babo)
04 - Samba Em Prelúdio (Baden Powell / Vinicius de Moraes)

Cesar Faria
