Joao Gilberto, Sylvia Telles & Dick Farney - Joao Gilberto, Silvia Telles & Dick Farney (1988)

This is a very interesting compilation sent by Dona Iara that it is not listed on any discography, at least the ones that I could check. By the way, several compilations were released in the late 80's and most of them are pretty unknown. I don't know if it is a matter of limited editions, but they are really worth checking. This LPs were recorded in the turn of the shift between vinyl to CD and they have a pretty good sound. This one is really obscure featuring remastered tunes of three great artists. Let's see.

This is Joao Gilberto, Sylvia Telles & Dick Farney - Joao Gilberto, Silvia Telles & Dick Farney (1988), for EMI-Odeon, perfect for those who are giving the first steps towards Brazilian music and want to have in a glance Bossa Nova cuts from three legends. These recordings range from 1957 to 1961, as detailed on track list. Tracks include:

01 - Desafinado - JOAO GILBERTO (1958)
02 - Dindi - SYLVIA TELLES (1959)
03 - Este Seu Olhar - DICK FARNEY (1959)

05 - A Felicidade - SYLVIA TELLES (1959)
06 - Alguem como Tu - DICK FARNEY (1958)
07 - Insensatez - JOAO GILBERTO (1961)
08 - Se Todos Fossem Iguais a Voce - SYLVIA TELLES (1957)
09 - Corcovado - JOAO GILBERTO (1960)
10 - Copacabana - DICK FARNEY (1958)
11 - Estrada do Sol - SYLVIA TELLES (1958)
12 - Samba de Uma Nota So - JOAO GILBERTO (1960)
13 - Marina - DICK FARNEY (1958)

Sylvia Telles - Sylvia Telles Sings the Wonderful Songs of Antonio Carlos Jobim (1965)

An exceptional date needs and exceptional album. This singer is perhaps the most celebrated at Loronix and for every Bossa Nova enthusiast. Wise of Caetano for taking this tremendous album to our tribute. Big coincidence also, since I could have made this post earlier and the chance of making it on such special date would be lost. I'm happy about this.

This is Sylvia Telles - Sylvia Telles Sings the Wonderful Songs of Antonio Carlos Jobim (1965), for Kapp Records (USA), also released in Brazil by Elenco, MEV-65 as The Music of Mr. Jobim by Sylvia Telles. Sylvia sings in Portuguese and English a repertoire of Antonio Carlos Jobim compositions, produced by Aloysio de Oliveira with Arrangements of Maestro Lindolfo Gaya. I'm just a little bit disappointed of not have a movie of Sylvia Telles available, so I'm posting a nice picture of her that you will find with the music. The cover artwork is one of those things that only Caetano Rodrigues can show us. I want to say thanks to Caetano for the amazing support given to our 48 Hours with Jobim series. Tracks include:

01 - Useless Lasdcape (Inútil Paisagem) (Tom Jobim / Aloysio de Oliveira / Vrs. R. Gilbert)
02 - Dreamer (Vivo Sonhando) (Tom Jobim / Vrs. Lees)
03 - Samba Torto (Tom Jobim / Aloysio de Oliveira)

06 - Eu Preciso de Você (Tom Jobim / Aloysio de Oliveira)
07 - All That's Left Is To Say Goodbye (Eu Preciso Dizer Adeus) (Tom Jobim / Vinicius de Moraes / Vrs. R. Gilbert)

Carlos Lyra, Lais, Lucio Alves, Silvinha Telles, Vinicius de Morais e Conjunto Oscar Castro Neves - Bossa Nova Mesmo (1960)

When zecalouro received this LP, came to his mind that it was another various artists or compilation. Big mistake, perhaps this can be considered one of the first Bossa Nova albums. Produced by Aloisio de Oliveira and arranged by Oscar Castro Neves, this LP was recorded with one purpose in mind, to introduce Bossa Nova and its main artists to the public.

O Conjunto de Oscar Castro Neves plays in all tracks. This also landmarks the first time Vinicius de Moraes puts his voice on a record in his career. Just to the records, this LP features Conjunto de Oscar Castro Neves, Carlos Lyra, Lais, Lucio Alves, Sylvia Telles and Vinicius de Moraes.

There is only one thing that disturbs zecalouro, the cover. How should they make a record to introduce such a bright and happy music with such a dark and serious artwork? Tracks include:

01 - So em Teus Bracos - Oscar Castro Neves (Antonio Carlos Jobim)
02 - Pela Luz dos Olhos Teus - Vinicius de Moraes (Vinicius de Moraes)
03 - Eu Tambem Preciso de Voce - Oscar Castro Neves (Sylvia Telles)
04 - Obrigada meu Bem - Sylvia Telles (Sylvia Telles / Aloysio de Oliveira)
05 - Chora tua Tristeza - Oscar Castro Neves (Oscar Castro Neves / Luvercy Fiorini)
06 - Com Voce - Sylvia Telles (Julio Hungria)
07 - Patinho Feio - Lais (Oscar Castro Neves / Dolores Duran)
08 - Bim Bom - Oscar Castro Neves (Joao Gilberto)
09 - Tem do de Mim - Carlos Lyra (Carlos Lyra)
10 - Menina Feia - Lucio Alves (Oscar Castro Neves / Luvercy Fiorini)
11 - Meditacao - Oscar Castro Neves (Antonio Carlos Jobim / Newton Mendonca)
12 - Gosto do Seu Olhar - Oscar Castro Neves (Iko Castro Neves / Luvercy Fiorini)

A Noite do Amor, do Sorriso e da Flor - 1o Festival de Bossa Nova | Faculdade de Arquitetura (1960)

This cover and post title is self-explanatory and I think nobody will ready these lines. It is not necessary to clean your glasses or schedule a visit to your doctor, what you see is exactly what you get, and I will be very straightforward to do not waste your time.

This is A Noite do Amor, do Sorriso e da Flor - Faculdade de Arquitetura (1960), the anthological event produced by Ronaldo Boscoli, considered the first Bossa Nova Festival, featuring renowned Brazilian artists on a very early stage of their career supported by Roberto Menescal (guitar), Luiz Carlos Vinhas (piano), Luiz Paulo (bass), Helcio Milito (drums) and Bebeto (sax).

The track list has some failures and I hope our community helps to realize the exact figures in terms of songs names and performers. The sound quality is not perfect, but if you take in from an historical perspective, every second of this event worth the hearing. I would like to thanks all the friends involved on this post, a very important accomplishment to our community. Tracks include:

Sylvia Telles - Amor de Gente Moca | Musicas de Antonio Carlos Jobim (1959)

I felt the same pleasure when reposting the last Elizeth Cardoso - Noturno (1957), as I had when it was made available for the first time a year ago. I'm also feeling very good on making this one. Amor de Gente Moca is another fantastic record released more than a year ago that was sleeping on a given day of June 2006. It is time to bring this amazingly out of print album to the spotlight, calling attention to Loronix new and old friends. Cover artworks are improved and the music was ripped with zecalouro supervision. FLAC files are also available. Loronixers acclaimed Sylvia Telles in the past and now it is time to celebrate her music again.

This is Sylvia Telles - Amor de Gente Moca | Musicas de Antonio Carlos Jobim (1959), for Odeon. I'm proud to own the Odeon original issue in a very good condition, the reason for this reposting. Sylvia Telles performs with orchestra the Antonio Carlos Jobim repertoire. I do not have knowledge to describe Sylvia Telles singing from a technical perspective, but she has that "thing" that belongs to less than a few gifted singers I have ever heard before. Amor de Gente Moca is directed by Aloysio de Oliveira, arranged by Maestro Gaya and has Orchestra conducted by Maestro Oswaldo Borba. Tracks include:

01 - Dindi (Tom Jobim / Aloysio de Oliveira)
02 - De Você Eu Gosto (Tom Jobim / Aloysio de Oliveira)
03 - Discussão (Tom Jobim / Newton Mendonça)
04 - Sem Você (Tom Jobim / Vinicius de Moraes)
05 - Fotografia (Tom Jobim)
06 - Janelas Abertas (Tom Jobim / Vinicius de Moraes)
07 - Demais (Tom Jobim / Aloysio de Oliveira)
08 - O Que Tinha de Ser (Tom Jobim / Vinicius de Moraes)
09 - A Felicidade (Tom Jobim / Vinicius de Moraes)
10 - Canta Canta Mais (Tom Jobim / Vinicius de Moraes)
11 - Só Em Teus Braços (Tom Jobim)
12 - Esquecendo Você (Tom Jobim)

Sylvia Telles - Amor em Hi-Fi (1960)

Let's close tonight with the update of an album released in the very first beginning of Loronix. I think the update of old and essential posts are very useful to friends who are new to Loronix. There is much to explore in the archives and the updates give better exposition to the best we have available, such like this one, featuring one of the most popular artists in our community. Let's see.

This is Sylvia Telles - Amor em HI-FI (1960), for Philips, the first album released by Sylvia Telles at Philips, just before the acclaimed Amor de Gente Moca, with Antonio Carlos Jobim repertoire. I like this album, but I think I would like much better if Philips credited more info about. Personnel is totally unknown, including arrangers and musicians in this session with Sylvia Telles performing a repertoire of Bossa Nova standards, a medley with international songs and a Frech version of Antonio Carlos Jobim and Dolores Duran Por Causa de Voce, here as Gardez Moi Pour Toujours. I'm making available a reposting of a video sent by the legendary Mr. E., with Sylvia Telles performing in a Brazilian movie, one of the nicest videos by this great Brazilian diva. Tracks include:

01 - Samba Torto (Tom Jobim / Aloysio de Oliveira)
02 - All The Way (Cahn / Hensen) The Boy Next Door (Blaue / Martin) They Can't Take That Away From Me (George Gershwin / Ira Gershwin)

04 - Tetê (Roberto Menescal / Ronaldo Bôscoli)
05 - Se É Tarde Me Perdoa (Carlos Lyra / Ronaldo Bôscoli)

Sylvia Telles - Caricia (1957)

Hello, good evening! Jorge Mello was very right providing this important record to our community. It is also a great coincidence that it is among the few albums definitely lost in my work of reactivating the missing links. Actually, this is perhaps the most important of them all; Carícia is the debut LP of a singer that I learned to admire with Loronix creation, Sylvia Telles. Let’s see.

This is Sylvia Telles – Caricia (1957), for Odeon, with the participation of a young musician named Antonio Carlos Jobim as arranger and conductor on two tracks, the opening track 01 - Por Causa de Voce and the closing 08 - Foi a Noite. Maestro Leo Peracchi is also in charge of arrangements and conduction of track 06 – Chove la For a. Odeon did not credit the remaining five tracks. Caricia features Antonio Carlos Jobim songs that became standards in the following years and Sylvia Telles delivers stunning performances. I think that even those who had already the chance to listen to Caricia in the first post should make this update, now featuring high quality front and back cover scans. Tracks include:

01 - Por Causa de Você (Tom Jobim / Dolores Duran)
02 - Sucedeu Assim (Marino Pinto / Tom Jobim)
03 - Tu e Eu (Altamiro Carrilho / Armando Nunes) with Lúcio Alves Candinho
04 - Se Todos Fôssem Iguais a Você (Tom Jobim / Vinicius de Moraes)
05 - Canção da Volta (Ismael Netto / Antônio Maria)
06 - Chove La Fora (Tito Madi)
07 - Duas Contas (Garoto)
08 - Foi a Noite (Tom Jobim / Newton Mendonça)

PS.: I forgot to mention Lucio Alves participation as special guest on track 03 - Tu e Eu. Candinho is the special guest, thanks Edson Mendes for this correction.

Rosinha de Valenca, Sylvia Telles & Edu Lobo with Dom Salvador Trio - Folklore e Bossa Nova do Brazil (1966)

I can file and track down every request and recommendation made by Loronixers, but seems to be imposible so far to associate the requests with requesters, specially one so hard to track down such as this nice LP with the participation of several Brazilian starts recorded for the label MPS/Basf in 1966, Germany.

The whole story is so far unknow, but this studio record has together on the set Chico Batera, Dom Salvador, Edu Lobo, J.T. Meirelles, Jorge Arena, Rosinha de Valenca, Rubens Bassini and Sylvia Telles. Some websites reports a not credited participation of Baden Powell, which is something to be checked. This is the first out of five records released by Philips between 1963 and 1964 with the "hits" from the artists of Philips cast. What a cast! Hits da Bossa Nova is probably one of the best compilations I have ever seen. In spite of the nice repertoire selection, Hits da Bossa Nova features tracks never released on regular recordings, providing a guaranteed entertainment for starters and experienced collectors.

If you are new to Bossa Nova, you should take it.

This is Hits da Bossa Nova (1963), for Philips, featuring Tamba Trio, Sylvia Telles, Sonia Delfino, Carlos Lyra, Baden Powell, Lucio Alves and Sergio Mendes. You cannot go wrong with such selection. Tracks include:

Mario Telles - Mario Telles (1962)

This is a great post. Before you ask me, I will anticipate, That's right, Mario Telles, Brazilian singer and composer is the brother of Sylvia Telles.

Mario Telles released this single LP on his entire musician career, a very rare album with arrangements and orchestration by Moacir Santos, Astor Silva (also as arranger) and Baden Powell (guitar and also arrangements). This LP also contains the very first recording of Nana.

This amazing CBS cover shows Mario Telles in front of a Portinari panel at Ministerio da Cultura facilities in Rio de Janeiro. zecalouro does not have much info about this LP and invites you to join him, listen and bring additional information about Mario Telles on comments section. Antonio Carlos Jobim - Nova Historia da Musica Popular Brasileira (1977)

Hello! This is another surprising chapter of Historia da MPB collection by Abril Cultural. Actually, this is from 1977 Nova Historia da Musica Popular Brasileira, a second and revised edition of the original and first issued in the very beginning of the 1970's. I always thought how would be the chapter dedicated to Antonio Carlos Jobim and it is better than my expectations. This cover, with a very unusual picture of Jobim and the back cover with the Maestro playing flute lying on the roof with the city around justified the wait. I always heard all issues from this collection were easy to find, but I think this is an exception. Let's see.

This is Antonio Carlos Jobim - Nova Historia da Musica Popular Brasileira (1977), for Abril Cultural, featuring highlights of Jobim repertoire performed by Antonio Carlos Jobim and others, such like Joao Gilberto, Astrud Gilberto, Stan Getz, Agostinho dos Santos, Dick Farney, Lucio Alves, Sylvia Telles and Elis Regina. This is a great album for those who want to know Jobim music at a glance. There are some important tracks here, such like 02 - Chega de Saudade and 03 - Desafinado, taken from Joao Gilberto debut LP recorded in 1958, featuring Antonio Carlos Jobim with orchestra. This series is really addictive and probably we will have a sequel in the forthcoming weeks. Tracks include:

Varios Artistas - Voce e o Artista (1960)

Hello, Good Evening! Loronix is having a great traffic today, really above the average, I was wondering perhaps this is some kind of Valentine Day effect with boys and girls selecting music to spend the night today. Anyway, Mr. E. sent this great surprise to Loronixers, not specific to this event, a album recorded in 1960 that probably is the first karaoke record in history. I'm only guessing, I did not check this information. Let's see what Mr. E. sent to us.

This is Voce e o Artista (1960), for Philips. Six songs organize this record, an artist performs each song, they are, Vera Lucia, Carlos Lyra, Sonia Delfino, Lucio Alves, Sylvia Telles and Lais. Let's take Lucio Alves as example, Lucio performs Dindi, speaks some words before the song and sings, the following track is the same song and same accompaniment with no singing, Lucio's voice was not mixed. You should not miss this unique LP with performances recorded for the occasion. Aloysio de Oliveira is in charge and probably is the owner of the whole idea. Thanks Mr. E. for this piece. Bossa Nova nas Gerais | Brazil 3

I will not hide my sympathy for the great State of Minas Gerais, my second State in Brazil. When I was a kid, I use to spend three months in Minas Gerais every year on a city located on south called Sao Lourenco. Minas Gerais is all about nature, bike ridings at the mountains and also birds. I have some of my birds there, they had to go away for living a better life and bring peace to my neighbors, they were about to expel me a couple of years ago.

Minas Gerais is a very special place; it was there that gold was first found in Brazil, spawning a rich culture during the Baroque period -- with the churches, status and classical music all around. It was there that many Portuguese noblemen came to live and make money, bringing along the tradition of European instruments and styles -- especially the music of bards and serenaders.

But Minas Gerais put a spin on it, as they do with everything is easy to sense and feel the style: never aggressive, very melodic, subtle, full of surprising harmonies to be played and sung carefully. It is well known in Brazil that people from Minas Gerais are expert at conversations that can last for hours. The same applies to their music: it feels like good conversation, acoustic guitar at hand, or the local form of the Spanish / Moorish with several different tunings, weaving sound around beautiful lyrics.

This is Bossa Nova nas Gerais, Caetano's compilation with Bossa Nova classics performed by renowned Brazilian artists and groups, featuring.

Music Video | Sylvia Telles - A Felicidade

I could not wait until tonight to share this video with Loronixers. This is Sylvia Telles being interviewed before leaving Brazil for a month in Europe, probably to the concert in Germany, 1966. Sylvia Telles sings A Felicidade after a short interview. The quality is not so good but worths the watching.

Sylvia Telles e Mario Telles - EP Elenco CE-27 (1966)

There is no much info available on old EPs, perhaps this is the reason why zecalouro does not like to post EPs very often. The old EPs are also like 78 rpm recordings, the cover artwork are simple, sometimes with a unique layout for diferent artists.

Since Sylvia Telles is on of Loronix favorites, zecalouro is making available this 1966 EP, Elenco CE-27, where Sylvia sings Nao Quero ver Voce Triste and then Canto de Paz with his brother Mario Telles. Tracks include:

01 - Não Quero Ver Você Triste (Roberto Carlos / Erasmo Carlos)
02 - Canto De Paz (Marco Antônio / Nelson Lins e Barros)

Varios Artistas - Recordando Carlinhos Guinle (1963)

This is not a regular post; this is a very special post. I was saving this LP for a later time and something on may mind says that this is the special day. This is another album provided by Caetano Rodrigues to our community. I did not have the idea of its existence and since this LP arrived at Loronix I've been searching for additional info.

I'm confident to say that this is a extremely rare LP. We are having at Loronix a once in a lifetime opportunity to get in touch with all this magical music by the hands of Caetano Rodrigues, hands of a friend that spend a great amount of his personal time and family life to select music, prepare copies, take cover scan copies on a labor of passion for the music from Brazil and for our community. Thanks Caetano for all the music, friendship and respect you have by our website and all the friends that I use to call Loronixers.

It has been a time since I was willing to make this statement; Caetano is providing music, knowledge and happiness to everybody, it is time to say thanks to a great friend of Loronix.

This is Recordando Carlinhos Guinle - Various Artists (1963), for Philips, featuring Tereza de Souza Campos, Jacques Klein, Sylvia Telles, Tamba Trio, Dorival Caymmi, Hugo Lima and Luli Oswald. Excelent. My research could not go further, but I think some of the tracks performed by Sylvia Telles, Dorival Caymmi and Tamba Trio were only released on this LP.

This record is a tribute to Carlos Guinle, member of an influent family in Brazil, founder of the legendary Copacabana Palace Hotel. Carlinhos Guinle has died very early at the age of 37 in 1956. Since then, Carlinhos Guinle compositions has been recorded by many renowned artists, although he always considers himself an amateur composer, he is the author of Sabado em Copacabana (Carlos Guinle / Dorival Caymmi), considered by many an early Bossa Nova tune. Tracks Include:

01 - Não Tem Solução (Dorival Caymmi / Carlinhos Guinle) - Tereza de Souza Campos
02 - Choro (Carlos Guinle / Hugo Lima) - Tamba Trio
03 - Valerá a Pena (Dorival Caymmi / Carlos Guinle / Hugo Lima) - Jacques Klein
04 - Sábado Em Copacabana (Carlos Guinle / Dorival Caymmi) - Silvinha Telles
05 - Nesta Rua Tão Deserta (Carlos Guinle / Hugo Lima / Jacques Klein) - Dorival Caymmi / Hugo Lima
06 - Sambão (Carlos Guinle / Jacques Klein) - Tamba Trio
07 - Tão Só (Dorival Caymmi / Carlos Guinle) - Tereza de Souza Campos
08 - Nesta Rua Tão Deserta (Carlos Guinle / Hugo Lima / Jacques Klein) - Jacques Klein
09 - Você Não Sabe Amar (Dorival Caymmi / Carlos Guinle / Hugo Lima) - Silvinha Telles
10 - Berceuse (Gilda Guinle) - Luli Oswald

Antonio Maria - Historia da Musica Popular Brasileira Nr. 36 (1971)

I'm really amazed by this series of 10-inch released by Abril Cultural in the early 70's as Historia da Musica Popular Brasileira. The first album with made with Billy Blanco had a really positive reaction. The repertoire selection is very well done and the eight-track format provides a really solid listening experience. It is now time to make the second, featuring a very important artist, a songwriter of Bossa Nova tunes that we like most. Let's see.

This is Antonio Maria - Historia da Musica Popular Brasileira Nr. 36 (1971), for Abril Cultural, featuring Antonio Maria compositions performed by Nora Ney, Maria Bethania, Dolores Duran, Joao Gilberto, Os Cariocas, Sylvia Telles and Dircinha Batista. I think this is a nice choice, Antonio Maria had a very important participation on Bossa Nova with no recording releases, let's celebrate Antonio Maria. Tracks include:

Kaleidoscopio Elenco - Various Artists

It is quite common to receive messages asking a post concentrating "the best of Loronix" or people asking zecalouro to make a short list of "the top ten posts", etc. I have to admit that it is very difficult to make this selection, Loronix has several albums available and I could not pick ten without letting masterpieces out of the list. That's why I decided to release an LP that is very representative of the music we have hear, a selection of Bossa Nova songs from Elenco cast, ideal for starters, those one who never had the chance to know Bossa Nova and wants to make it through a single record.

This is Kaleidoscopio Elenco - Various Artists (no date), the best of Elenco cast from the 60's, featuring Antonio Carlos Jobim, Sylvia Telles, Vinicius de Moraes, Nara Leao, Roberto Menescal, Lennie Dale, Maysa, Sergio Ricardo, Baden Powell, Lucio Alves, Odette Lara and Chris Connor. Claudia Telles - Claudia Telles (1976)

Another special post to a Loronixer recommendation that was really hard to manage and has finally comes to life. It took so long that I couldn’t remember who remind zecalouro on this LP.

Anyway, there is also a story behind it. Claudia Telles - Claudia Telles (1976) came by accident to zecalouro on his zecalouro@gmail.com address by the Loronixer Rogelio Centella. Rogelio received this LP from another dude known as Wilton - a very friend of Rogelio - that took this LP from the guy who plays bass on the sessions, the legendary Paulo Cesar Barros, member of Renato e Seus Blue Caps.

Hello, Paulo Barros, we do not know each other and zecalouro could not reach you to agree on this post. Since this is a out of print LP that Loronixers will love, everybody will run to the stores to get the available albums fro Claudia, which is really nice and compliant with Loronix value proposition. Thanks Paulo, it will be a honror to see your comments about this LP and inside information about the sessions you had with Claudia.

Let's talk about Claudia Telles, she is daughter of Sylvia Telles and this 1976 LP is her debut album. There are several tracks that were very successful by its release time, such like: Fim de Tarde, Eu Preciso te Esquecer and a nice version of And I Love Her, The Beatles.

The LP has sounds like the 70's - probably by the arrangements, piano and keyboard played by Lincoln Olivetti. zecalouro feels like being dragged back to his childhood times when listening to these songs. Really cool.
