Hello, good evening! Let's start this Friday moving forward that idea of showing early Bossa Nova and performers that have influenced Bossa Nova. I was reading yesterday a book that everybody should read, Caetano Veloso - Verdade Tropical. Caetano said Orlando Silva is one of his strongest influences and he can be considered as a disciple. The same applies to Joao Gilberto as we could hear on that 78rpm with Joao Gilberto performing on a style very close to Orlando Silva. Caetano Veloso also said that Orlando Silva peak was in the late 30's and early 40's, and this is what we have available at this essential record, being reposted with upgrades on everything. Let's see.
This is Orlando Silva - Carinhoso (1959), for RCA Victor, featuring new recordings of Orlando Silva repertoire taken from 1935 and 1942 78rpm. RCA Victor released this album as part of the company 25th anniversary and sold it very much, being also very well received among the reviewers of that time. In fact, an anthological album with a nice repertoire selection with Orlando Silva singing with a different voice from his early years, but still fantastic.
I'm making available three original 78rpm Orlando Silva recordings of Carinhoso (1937), Aos Pes da Cruz (1942) and Labios que Beijei (1942), so we can check how Orlando Silva interpretation changed. By the way, these original 78rpm tracks are really nice. Tracks include:
01 - Carinhoso (Pixinguinha / João de Barro) - 1937 (*)
02 - Lágrimas (Cândido das Neves "Índio") - 1935
03 - Mágoas de Caboclo (Leonel Azevedo / J. Cascata) - 1939
04 - Amigo Leal (Benedito Lacerda / Aldo Cabral) - 1937
05 - Súplica (Otávio Gabus Mendes / José Marcílio / Déo) - 1940
06 - Rosa (Pixinguinha / Otávio de Souza) - 1937
07 - Lábios Que Beijei (J. Cascata / Leonel Azevedo) - 1937 (*)
08 - Juramento Falso (J. Cascata / Leonel Azevedo) - 1937
09 - Aliança Partida (Benedito Lacerda / Roberto Martins) - 1937
10 - Aos Pés da Cruz (Marino Pinto / Zé da Zilda) - 1942 (*)
11 - Sinhá Maria (René Bittencourt)
