Izio Gross y Su Ritmo - Bossa Nova in Rhythm

Hello, Good Evening! One of the favorites Caetano Rodrigues musicians is back to Loronix, Izio Gross, a widely unknown artist in Brazil, but an acclaimed musician overseas, especially in German, the country were he lives and made most part of his discography.

This is Izio Grosss y Su Ritmo - Bossa Nova in Rhythm (no date), for Kubaney. I have been searching for info about this album with no success. Caetano says that Bossa Nova in Rhythm was recorded in Mexico and he is right since Kubaney is a Mexican record label. I've been searching also at Izzio Gross official website and among several itens on his discography, this one is not listed. I think it should be listed; this is one of the best Izio Gross albums I have heard with vivid Samba Jazz renditions of Bossa Nova standards. Tracks include:

01 - Desafinado
02 - Zelao
03 - Tristeza Alegre
04 - Noite do Meu Bem
05 - Eu-e-o-Rio
06 - Murmurio
07 - Barquinho
08 - Dindi
09 - Palhacada
10 - Samba de Minha Terra
11 - Quem Quiser Encontrar o Amor
12 - Ceu e Mar

Marcos Valle & Azymuth - Brazil by Music | Fly Cruzeiro (1972)

I think Quimsy will not be bored with zeca when he sees this amazing Brazilian instrumental music creation at Loronix. This is a extremely rare album made by Aquarius Producoes Artisticas, which is as far as I know a label owned by Marcos Valle and Azymuth. I never had the chance to see this vinyl and we should thanks Quimsy who first made available at his website (http://quimsy.blogspot.com)

This is Marcos Valle & Azymuth - Brazil by Music, Fly Cruzeiro (1972), for Aquarius Producoes Artisticas. Fly Cruzeiro is a promotional record, never released commercially with the intent of be used as music to be played inside Cruzeiro airlines flights. The cover artwork I have is so tiny that I asked zeca to make this version, but you can see the original one at the left. If someone can add more information about this album, such as: number of copies, personnel, etc. please let us know. Tracks include:

01 - Jingle Cruzeiro
02 - Esta Fazendo um Ano - Aquarela do Brasil

Stan Getz - Big Band Bossa Nova (1962)

This is one out of a series of albums available at "A Bossa Nova Internacional" section of Caetano's Bossa Nova e Outras Bossas book released by Verve with this cover artwork, all designed by Olga Albizu. Most of these albums were very important on introducing Bossa Nova to American audience and we will start to show by this first one sent by Caetano Rodrigues with Stan Getz on Bossa Nova standards arranged by Gary McFarland.

This is Stan Getz - Big Band Bossa Nova (1962), for Verve, with arrangements and conduction by Gary McFarland. This amazing set was recorded only in two days, August 27 and 28, 1962. AMG should make better than zeca on Big Band Bossa Nova review with highlights on Gary McFarland participation, as follows: "Fresh from the sudden success of Jazz Samba and "Desafinado," Stan Getz asked the 28-year-old, strikingly gifted Gary McFarland to arrange a bossa nova album for big band as a follow-up. Getz is always his debonair, wistful, freely-floating self, completely at home in the Brazilian idiom that he'd adopted only a few months before. McFarland usually keeps things nice and spare (although "One Note Samba" is uncharacteristically cluttered and a bit too discordant for the material), letting his pungent voicings stab the air now and then, while allowing the soloists all the room they want within the confines of producer Creed Taylor's tight timings. Four of the eight songs are by McFarland (none of which would become standards), and Getz makes relaxed impressions with "Manha de Carnival" and "Chega de Saudade." Jim Hall takes the role of acoustic guitarist from Charlie Byrd with his usual fluidity, and Hank Jones ruminates in a boppish way on piano. This album also charted quite respectably (number 13) in the first flush of the bossa nova boom." Tracks include:

01 - Manha de Carnaval
02 - Balanco no Samba
03 - Melancolico
04 - Entre Amigos
05 - Chega de Saudade
06 - Noite Triste
07 - Samba de uma Nota So
08 - Bim Bom

Alberto Mota e Seu Conjunto - E pra Dancar... Ou Mais!... (1963)

Yesterday, Carlos Mendes asked for an album from Orlando Pereira, which is an artist from the Brazilian North region Para state, close to Amazon and the rainforest full of birds that I want to visit one day. I spoke with Caetano about Orlando Pereira and he recommended a different artist from the same Para state that made a great success at Loronix months ago, Alberto Mota e Seu Conjunto, back to Loronix with E pra Dancar... Ou Mais!

This is Alberto Mota e Seu Conjunto - E pra Dancar... Ou Mais!... (1963), for Polydor. This is as nice as the previous release, Voa Meu Samba with Alberto Mota e Seu Conjunto in front of an airplane, but there is one thing that really disturbs me, this building location, it looks like very much with a church build in Belo Horizonte city, Minas Gerais, a project by Oscar Niemeyer, the renowned Brazilian architect that is making 100 years this year active as he was when 50 years old. If a friend has the right information about this building, please let us know. Tracks include:

Marisa Barroso - Marisa Barroso (1962) with Astor Silva

Hello, Good Evening! They are back. I thought I could resist longer showing you this album, but it was impossible, so good it is and also so nice is this cover artwork. Both are in evidence since Caetano Rodrigues sent to us the first Marisa Barroso LP and Astor e Sua Orquestra - Sambas.. So Sambas! yesterday, as well. Let's show Loronixers another outcome of this very interesting partnership between Marisa Barroso and Astor Silva.

This is Marisa Barroso - Marisa Barroso (1962), for Columbia. Marisa Barroso is again directed and backed by Astor Silva arrangements that also plays trombone. In my opinion, this is equivalent or better than the first, which is the third and last Marisa Barroso album, sent by Caetano Rodrigues. This is her second LP and we are desperately looking for Marisa Barroso debut recorded in 1961 for Copacabana as Marisa Barroso - Cantigas para Enganar o Tempo, with Aloisio e Seu Conjunto. Tracks include:

01 - Na Cadência do Samba (Ataulfo Alves / Paulo Gesta)
02 - Renuncia (Lauro Miranda / Otávio Teixeira)
03 - Parti (Ed Lincoln / Silvio César)
04 - Chora Coração (Denis Brean / Osvaldo Guilherme)
05 - Tema do Boneco de Palha (Sivan Castelo Neto / Vera Brasil)
06 - Poema do Olhar (Evaldo Gouveia / Jair Amorim)
07 - Doçura (Alcyr Pires Vermelho / Maria Isabel)
08 - Vem Pro Samba (Orlandivo)
09 - Samba de Sofrer (Hélio Justo / Titto Santos)
10 - Tudo É Paz (Pernambuco / Marino Pinto)
11 - Piano a Quatro Mãos (Armando Cavalcanti / Victor Freire)
12 - Sem Você (Tom Jobim / Vinicius de Moraes)

Johnny Alf - Rapaz de Bem (1961)

I have been trying to find a reason for taken a year to show this album to Loronixers, a important album to everybody who wants to know more about early Bossa Nova develops by an early Bossa Nova figure, the great Johnny Alf. Perhaps I'm getting blink by the way, this cover looks very much like Compact 33 by Leny Andrade and Tamba Trio and maybe I was taken it by mistake as a driven by cover artwork parrot I am.

This is Johnny Alf - Rapaz de Bem (1961), for RCA Victor, Johnny Alf debut LP. Johnny Alf was an active musician since the early 50's and could only make this first LP in 1961. Little is known about this LP, however, the tireless Maria Luiza Kfouri from Discos do Brasil (http://www.discosdobrasil.com.br) identified Maestro Nelsinho as arranger and also trombonist on some tracks, which is also a guarantee of nice arrangements and trombone playing as Nelsinho uses to make on everything he takes part. Tracks include:

01 - Rapaz de Bem (Johnny Alf)
02 - Escuta (Johnny Alf)
03 - Feitiçaria (Custódio Mesquita / Evaldo Ruy)
04 - Fuga (Durval Ferreira)
05 - Tema Sem Palavras (Maurício Einhorn / Durval Ferreira)
06 - Penso Em Você (Fernando Lobo / Paulo Soledade)
07 - O Que É Amar (Johnny Alf)
08 - Fim de Semana Em Eldorado (Johnny Alf)
09 - Que Vou Dizer Eu (Victor Freire / Klécius Caldas)
10 - Ilusão à Toa (Johnny Alf)
11 - Tudo Distante de Mim (Johnny Alf)
12 - Vem (Johnny Alf)

This is Johnny Alf - Rapaz de Bem (1961), at Loronix, here.

Hope uEnjoy!

Bola Sete - Ocean (1972)

I have been thinking about showing this album every week since last year and now I have some reasons for making it. Yesterday, Ipanema Sun asked for it using a comment at Astrud Gilberto post and today, I was talking with Ronnie Mesquita about another Bola Sete album that he played drums, Sheebaba, which is one of the greatest Bola Sete albums in my humble opinion. Everything leads to Bola Sete - Ocean.

This is Bola Sete - Ocean (1972), for Takoma. Breathtaking guitar only album blending meditative Bossa Nova renditions with vibrant Flamenco tunes. Another reason for do not make it before was complexity, Ocean sounds strange at a first hearing, but it is the kind of album that rewards you more and more on every new hearing you take. I hope people also reward Ronnie, Ipanema Sun and zeca to bring Bola Sete to the spotlight again at Loronix. Tracks include:

01 - Vira Mundo Penba
02 - Guitar Lamento
03 - Let Go
04 - Macumba
05 - The Lonely Gaucho
06 - Inn of the Beginning
07 - Xango Xengo Xerengo
08 - Ocean Waves (O Mar)
09 - Jongo
10 - O Astronauta

Astor e Sua Orquestra - Samba... So Samba! (1963)

Hello, Good Evening! Here we go on another Caetano Rodrigues contribution, a solo LP by an artist that always delivers wonderful results on everything he makes, from participations as trombonist to more complex accomplishments as arranger on other artists albums. Astor Silva is really extraordinary.

This is Astor Silva e Sua Orquestra - Samba... So Samba! (1963), for Columbia. This is the first Astor Silva album at Loronix and his discography is huge, releasing more than 10 LPs as Astor Silva and other additional albums using other names, such like Lord Astor and as member of the group Lord Astor e Seus Dixiedrolls. I will be tracking down more Astor Silva solo releases and we will have more to come in a near future, he was a fantastic musician and deserves a stronger approach at Loronix. Tracks include:

01 - Mulata Assanhada (Ataulfo Alves)
02 - Garota de Ipanema (Tom Jobim / Vinicius de Moraes)
03 - Só Danço Samba (Tom Jobim / Vinicius de Moraes)
04 - Saudade (Emílio Batista / Ruy Rey)
05 - Olhou Pra Mim (Ed Lincoln / Silvio César)
06 - Aquarela do Brasil (Ary Barroso)
07 - Meditação (Tom Jobim / Newton Mendonça)
08 - La Forcata (N. Oliviero / R. Ortolani)

As Melhores Mulheres - (Cantadas por um Homem Qualquer ou Qualquer Homem) (1957)

Really, really wise of Caetano when he sent this album with a note: "to be released at Saturday night". I did not understand why it should be released on this specific day, but today Caetano told me: "This is to celebrate Mother's day, stupid Parrot". Very wise of Caetano, he is right, I didn't make this easy association...

Although people in different countries celebrate Mother's Day on different days of the year, Loronix and Caetano Rodrigues would like to dedicate this beautiful album to all Mother's in the world.

This is As Melhores Mulheres (Cantadas por um Homem Qualquer ou Qualquer Homem) (1957), for Odeon. In spite of the big title, I did not write the artist or group name, however, Caetano thinks - and I agree with him - this is a male choir lead by Aloysio de Oliveira since his voice can be heard clear in some tracks. As Melhores Mulheres was released in 1957, before Bossa Nova and feature arrangements from Maestro Antonio Carlos Jobim and Orlando Silveira, which makes this album a sought after vinyl collectors piece. Thanks once again for this great music and also for Mother's Day surprise in the last minute. Tracks include:

01 - Maria (Ary Barroso / Luis Peixoto)
02 - Helena Helena (Antônio Almeida / Constantino Silva "Secundino")
03 - Aurora (Mário Lago / Roberto Roberti)
04 - Zazá (Joel de Almeida)
05 - Rosa Morena (Dorival Caymmi)
06 - Emília (Haroldo Lobo / Wilson Batista)
07 - Marina (Dorival Caymmi)
08 - Dolores (Arlindo Marques Júnior / Marino Pinto / Alberto Ribeiro)
09 - Ai Que Saudades da Amélia (Ataulfo Alves / Mário Lago)
10 - Magdalena (Ari Macedo / Airton Amorim)
11 - Juraci (Antônio Almeida / Ciro de Souza)
12 - Um Nome de Mulher (Tom Jobim / Vinicius de Moraes)

Marisa & Moacyr Silva e Seu Conjunto - Convite a Musica Nr. 2 (1958)

Caetano Rodrigues will think I'm going nuts with this post, we spent almost an hour discussing alternatives to reach a different decision, but a last minute technical problem was identified and the agreed album needs to be postponed. I'm wondering if you think we are crazy and if you think we are crazy you are 100% correct, it is really insane to spend a lot of time to decided between gold and diamonds since all Caetano collection is great from the start to end. We love the work we do at Loronix and the time we spent on decision-making is on the benefit of everybody. Sorry Caetano, this busy parrot will settled a little down after our celebration.

This is Marisa & Moacyr Silva e Seu Conjunto - Convite a Musica Nr. 2 (1958), for Copacabana, the best of both words album blending instrumental tracks provided by the legendary Brazilian sax tenor Moacyr Silva and the renowned Brazilian singer Marisa, also known as Marisa Gata Mansa. Convite a Musica Nr. 2 follows Nr. 1, already available at Loronix and in my humble opinion is very much better than the first one.

I learned a lot of new things with this album, I didn't know that Marisa was part of Moacyr Silva e Seu Conjunto, performing together on nightclubs, such as the legendary Vogue, a feel blocks away from my place. It is funny, I miss Vogue nightclub and I never had the chance of being there, and actually, I don't think I was born when Vogue was opened for business. I also learned that Moacyr Silva was influenced by the American Jazz sax player Coleman Hawkins, at least is what Lucio Rangel says at liner notes. That's it. Thanks Caetano for Moacyr Silva, Marisa and Conjunto, featuring Chaim Lewak, Maurilio Santos, Edmundo Maciel, Raul Gagliardi and Hanestaldo Americo. Tracks include:
