Banda Mantiqueira - Bixiga (2000)

Hello, Good Evening! It is amazing this fantastic album has gone out of print only seven years before it was issued for the first time. This is another request originated by the folks of Quadradinho (Loronix message box at the side bar), by the way, Quadradinho has been an attraction and you should move your eyeballs there. Loronixer Carlos Braga is making a revolution there, telling stories, sharing experiences and several Loronix friends are running there to interact. Do not miss Quadradinho. This post is zecalouro homage to Quadradinho friends, they are making a better Loronix.

This is Banda Mantiqueira - Bixiga (2000), for Pau Brasil. Thanks Luiz Harding for pointing the records made by Banda Mantiqueira, considered by many the best Brazilian Big Band in activity. Their first album, Aldeia was nominated for a Grammy price as the best Latin(?) Jazz Album, a blend of American Jazz with music from Brazilian legends such Antonio Carlos Jobim and Pixinguinha. Banda Mantiqueira performed weekly -- every Monday -- at Vou Vivendo, a small concert arena in Sao Paulo and I'm making a video with one of that every Monday performances. Tracks include:

Jorge Ben - Solta o Pavao (1975)

I have been wondering about Jorge Ben for weeks. Actually, several friends warned me that Jorge Ben was a missing piece here. They were right; Jorge Ben is a very important artist to Brazilian popular music. If you make a detailed analysis on his discography you will find Bossa Nova, Tropicalismo, MPB, Samba and several other styles. Many fans, inside and outside Brazil, adore him.

This is Jorge Ben - Solta o Pavao (1975), for Philips. It was not easy to start with such experimental album. Solta o Pavao immediately follows the celebrated Tabua de Esmeralda and both are connected to each other. I cannot understand why Solta o Pavao remains obscure, while Tabua de Esmeralda stays under the spotlights, Solta o Pavao belongs to one of the most creative Jorge Ben phases and brings some of my favorite Jorge Ben songs, such as Zagueiro and the fantastic Jorge de Capadocia, among others. Escolas de Samba - Batucada Fantastica Vol. 2 (1975)

This is a quick post to address the request of Andreas Pavel from IMMB, which is our partner site Instituto da Memoria Musical Brasileira that owns and maintain the great discography available at Jornal Musical. I'm not sure this post should address Andreas request since he was looking for Luciano Perrone - Batucada Fantastica Vol. 2 for Musidisc. This is also Batucada Fantastica Vol. 2 for Musidisc, but Luciano Perrone is not credited. Let's see what we have.

This is Escolas de Samba - Batucada Fantastica Vol. 2 (1975), for Musidisc. Thanks to GK for making zecalouro remembers this album, as a great coincidence, GK offered Batucada Fantastica Vol. 2 in the same day I was taking the music out of it. GK said this is one of the greatest covers he have seen and I agree. There is no songs or melodies here, it is all about percussion, such like Luciano Perrone releases in the same style. However, Batucada Fantastica Vol. 2 is performed by some of the most famous Escolas de Samba do Rio de Janeiro, making the record vivid as those Carnaval Samba parades or Escolas de Samba rehearsals. Paulinho - Prestige Apresenta Paulinho para Animar sua Festa (1959)

Hello, Good Evening! The recently discovered Prestige label is truly amazing. Tiny and obscure, their records have the best of instrumental music from the glory end of 50's and beginning of 60's decades. Prestige also used that trick of calling well-known artists to record nice albums under fake names, such as Musidisc did with Bob Fleming, which was in fact Moacyr Silva. Anyway, this is not about fake names, we have a real artist here, on another nice Prestige release.

This is Paulinho - Prestige Apresenta Paulinho para Animar Sua Festa (1959), for Prestige. The second Paulinho album was presented a month ago and performed very well. Paulinho, also known as Paulinho Magalhaes, is the renowned musician who collaborated with Sergio Mendes, Bola Sete and many others. Personnel is not credited. Tracks include:

Walter Wanderley - Entre Nos (1964)

I don't have words to explain how good is this Walter Wanderley album that I had the chance to hear for the first time today. Although not available at Loronix, Entre Nos was not on my hunting list. Thanks Cesar Saldanha for pointing and thanks Caetano Rodrigues for making this fantastic contribution. The vinyl was on perfect condition and the conversion to digital was very well done. Caetano Rodrigues is the master of creating MDs from vinyl.

This is Walter Wanderley - Entre Nos (1964), for Philips. The name "Entre Nos" has a reason, this is the first Walter Wanderley album for Philips and the name Entre Nos (among us) is something like a celebration to the new artist on Philips cast. Philips gave everything to Walter Wanderley, he is backed his Conjunto and a not credited orchestra. The mix of organ and orchestra is really nice and Walter Wanderley Conjunto delivers an awesome Samba Jazz beat. You should not miss this one. Tracks include:

Rosa Passos - Recriacao (1979)

Another late Loronix Debut, Rosa Passos, Brazilian singer, with her first LP never release on CD, Recriacao (1979). Rosa Passos started playing piano at the age of 3, she had everything ready for a piano career when at the age of 11, she listened to Joao Gilberto and her life has changed.

This is an amazing debut LP; all songs are Rosa Passos compositions in partnership with the poet Fernando de Oliveira. Joao Gilberto influence is very strong on Rosa's performance, she even mention Joao at the first song of this debut LP. Tracks include:

Siles e Seu Conjunto - Samba Society (1958)

This album came in the last Caetano Rodrigues contribution, probably the most obscure from this recent package, recently purchased by Caetano on a very good price and condition a couple of weeks ago. If Caetano sent a recently purchased album, it means that something different and unique is waiting for us. Let's check.

This is Siles e Seu Conjunto - Samba Society (1958), for RGE. If Caetano had this LP when planning his Bossa Nova covers book, I'm sure he would be listed, really wonderful artwork by RGE. In the other hand, the big question is the identification of the main performer, Siles. My searches did not result a single mention. Siles plays accordion and plays good, something different from what we are used to hear from the late 50's, where instrumental music was mostly based on traditional piano, bass, drums and sax formations. Samba Society is delicious to hear and I invite you to check it out. Tracks include:

As Musicas de Henry Mancini em Bossa Nova

Hello, Good Evening! When I saw this album in the middle of others contributions given by the great Caetano Rodrigues, I thought it was a compilation of previous releases by Henry Mancini with some Bossa Nova style. I was wrong. As Musicas de Henry Mancini em Bossa Nova brings brand new material, twelve instrumental renditions of Henry Mancini essential tunes performed as Bossa Nova.

This is As Musicas de Henry Mancini em Bossa Nova (no date), for CID, part of a series of instrumental albums, each one an homage to a given artist, so far, I could track equivalents for Ary Barroso and Dorival Caymmi, there are probably others. Guess who is behind this initiative? Durval Ferreira, credited as artistic and musical director. Personnel is not credit and the music is performed by a quartet with keyboards, bass, guitar and drums. Tracks include:

Baden Powell & Maria D'Apparecida - Maria D'Apparecida Chante Baden Powell (1977)

Let's close this first day of Caetano Rodrigues contribution with a very curious record, a collaboration between Baden Powell and the singer Maria D'Apparecida. As Caetano's music arrived today, I did not research accordingly, but any recording with Baden Powell is basically a must get and I cannot resist to something that I never see before.

This is Baden Powell & Maria D'Apparecida - Maria D'Apparecida Chante Baden Powell (1979), for Carabine / Liberty (France). Maria D'Apparecida was a classical singer that switched to popular after a car accident in France. I'm not sure if she was born in France of Brazil, although she sings in Portuguese with no accent. I like her singing, not perfect from a technical point of view, but she has that feeling we find on singers like Thelma Soares and Marisa Barroso.

The repertoire brings 12 Baden Powell compositions, mainly songs from his partnership with Paulo Cesar Pinheiro. Baden Powell also plays guitar in all tracks. I'm showing the original LP cover provided by Caetano Rodrigues with the little kid at the beach and the CD issue showing Baden and Maria D'Apparecida together. Thanks Caetano for this really not easy to see Baden Powell album. Tracks include:

Maciel - Maciel Toca, Voce Danca (1960)

Hello, Good Evening! Wooow! Sorry, I could not control my enthusiasm when I opened the new Caetano Rodrigues packaged and found this fantastic album. My first contact was at Caetano's place in Sao Paulo. I look to Caetano and asked: "Can I get someday to Loronix?" and he said "Yes!!". Since then it has been more than a month until the arrival today. I decided to make it first and I hope you get the same good feelings when hearing this fantastic album, like I had this afternoon.

This is Maciel - Maciel Toca, Voce Danca (1960), for Polydor. Maciel cannot be taken as Ed Maciel, which is also a trombonist. Maciel has many years of collaboration to Brazilian music; being also a Classical musician, member of Orquestra Sinfonica do Teatro Municipal do Rio de Janeiro. Maciel blows great here and several Brazilian Maestros delivers arrangements to Maciel Danca, Voce Toca, as follows: Astor Silva, Moacir Santos (yep!), Severino Filho, K-Ximbinho and Cipo.
