Gilson Peranzzetta (piano) & Arthur Maia (contrabaixo) - Tom & Villa (1986)

Here we go on another album connecting Brazilian Popular and Classical music, featuring a tribute to the greatest artists on each side, Antonio Carlos Jobim and Heitor Villa Lobos. I think this album is rather unknown by Loronixers, it was released by Coca Cola Beverage company to be distributed to clients and never was made available commercially.

Coca Cola released this album to homage Heitor Villa Lobos on his 100th anniversary, celebrated in 1986, inviting Gilson Peranzzetta (piano) and Arthur Maia (bass), backed by the special guests Ze Nogueira (sax soprano) and Amando Marcal (percussion). Let's see.

This is Gilson Peranzzetta (piano) & Arthur Maia (contrabaixo) - Tom & Villa (1986), for Coca Cola, featuring four instrumental renditions of Antonio Carlos Jobim and Heitor Villa Lobos Music. Gilson Peranzzetta is also musical director and arranger, being also responsible for creating Jobinianas Nr. 1 and 2, Antonio Carlos Jobim compositions blended with excerpts of Villa Lobos music) and Viva Villa Nr. 1 and 2, Villa Lobos music blended with excerpts of Antonio Carlos Jobim compositions. Astor Silva & Oswaldo Borba - Metais em Brasa no Samba (1962)

Hello, good evening! Let's start this Sunday showing Loronixers a kind of album that is not been released for several weeks, an orchestra album with renditions of Brazilian standards in the Samba style. Brazilian maestros such like Portinho (the best in the style), Carioca and Zaccarias delivered several ones in the 60's, but this one is different, featuring two Maestros, both credited as the main performers. Let's see.

This is Astor Silva & Oswaldo Borba - Metais em Brasa no Samba (1962), for Philips, featuring Astor Silva in charge of arrangements and Oswaldo Borba as orchestra director and conductor. I'm having a special pleasure to show this album, a Loronix friend from Hungary wrote me today asking support for the creation of an international Astor Silva fan club. He said he could only know Astor Silva with Loronix and he is now crazy for recordings and anything else from the Maestro. This is fantastic and I will keep Loronixers informed as he better develop the idea. Tracks include:

Milton Banana Trio - Tipo Exportacao (Samba e Isso) Vol. 2 (1978)

I'm really happy with this Samba Saturday day, three solid releases covering different Samba styles. We started with Marchinhas de Carnaval, performed by several Brazilian artists, with some of them never spoke before, then we moved to the 70's, showing Sonia Lemos and her third album for Continental, based on Samba de Raiz with Afro-Brazilian influences and the great finish with an artist that everybody likes, the legendary Milton Banana Trio. Three solid released very different to each other.

This is Milton Banana Trio - Tipo Exportacao (Samba e Isso) Vol. 2 (1978), for RCA Pure Gold. This cover alone worth the admission price, but there is another very nice finding on this album, Milton Banana sings for the first time on recording and he sings the last track, a medley with Milton's tribute to Joao Gilberto. Personnel is not credited, but Milton Banana also writes liner notes and say special thanks to Maestro Cido Bianchi (in charge of arrangements), the bassist Claudio, the guitarist Heraldo and Edson. I'm not sure if they take part on this session. Tracks include:

Sonia Lemos - Perola de Agonita (1976)

Let's move forward with the Samba Saturday posts showing an artist released in the end of 2006 with her debut LP, Sonia Lemos - Sonia Lemos e Sua Viola Enluarada (1968), the one with Sonia Lemos at Copacabana beach in your left. It is a very nice album with Sonia Lemos performing as a Bossa Nova singer. If you see this cover, it is easy to understand that Sonia Lemos made a shift from Bossa Nova to Samba de Raiz music with Afro-Brazilian religion influence, such like Clara Nunes and Beth Carvalho. Let's see.

This is Sonia Lemos - Perola de Agonita (1976), for Continental, featuring Sonia Lemos 8 years after her successful debut LP. Definitively, she is also a great Samba interpreter, but not in the first tier, such as Clara Nunes. I could not find much information about Sonia Lemos to bring more clarification on her shift, but Pedra de Agonita is solid, like any other recording in the style and counts with a constellation of Brazilian musicians. Geraldo Vandre - Geraldo Vandre (1979)

If you were living in Brazil during 1979, you were probably the happy owner of this album. I remember to have mine, as well, every musical friend I had. There is a reason, this album features for the first time the legendary song Pra Nao Dizer que Nao Falei das Flores, performed by Geraldo Vandre under a stressing situation, he knew that military police was waiting to take him under arrest. This song was forbidden by the censorships since 1968 and this album brought it back to public after long 11 years.

This is Geraldo Vandre - Geraldo Vandre (1979), for Som Maior, a compilation of Geraldo Vandre career, featuring Pra Nao Dizer que Nao Falei das Flores, also known as Caminhando. This song has a real importance, being the anthem song against the regime. I heard or read in the past that "Caminhando" had participation on government decision to establish the AI-5, which is something that I will let friends discuss in comment section. Som Maior made changes in some songs, according with Geraldo Vandre advice, making this compilation worth checking out. Tracks include:

Hello, Good Evening! Let's try to make some Samba today, starting with this one, not exactly the kind of Samba that we use to release on Saturdays, but an album that really worth, presenting us a style that was very popular in Brazilian carnaval that just disappeared since the 80's. I'm talking about Marchinhas de Carnaval, a kind of Carnaval song with simple lyrics (to make it popular very fast), humor and melodies that will infect your head after the first hearing. Let's see.

This is Carnaval | Rio Quatrocentao (1964), for Copacabana, featuring Copacabana cast performing Marchinhas for the 1965 Carnaval. Rio Quatrocentao features several artists that we never spoke about at Loronix, including Dora Lopes (coming soon with a solo LP provided by Mr. G.), Gilberto Alves, Walter Stuart, among others. Copacabana dedicated the best resources to deliver this album, including Altamiro Carrilho and Moacyr Silva as producers, Pachequinho, Pernambuco, Ivan Paulo and Washington Marinho as arranger and a constellation of musicians. This is the right pick for the friends who want to travel back to 1965 carnaval and also the ones who want to have a panorama of the Marchinha music. Hello, Good Evening! The weekend is approaching; friends are now home or celebrating with co-workers another successful working weekend. I confess that I would like very much to do the same, but something that was working for months decided to break today and this parrot is like a soldier, he never gives up. Billy Blanco - Historia da Musica Popular Brasileira Nr. 32 (1971)

I'm not sure that everybody will remember when I introduced Loronixers to a series of albums dedicated to Brazilian artists with Chico Buarque edition on Historia da Musica Popular Brasileira - Serie Grandes Compositores. You can check Chico Buarque album here.

Now it is time to get along with another series, which is my favorite, Historia da Musica Popular Brasileira, easily identified by this back cover. This series was released from 1970 to 1971 and it is very easy to find on old vinyl shops in Rio. Each edition comes with biography, beautiful color photos and something that is really great an LP in the 10-inch format featuring a compilation.

This is Billy Blanco - Historia da Musica Popular Brasileira Nr. 32 (1971), for Abril Cultural, featuring eight Billy Blanco compositions, performed by Lucio Alves, Isaura Garcia, Jorge Veiga, Doris Monteiro, Maysa, Jamelao, Wilson Simonal and Billy Banco. I think Billy Blanco choice is correct; he is a very important Bossa Nova artist with less than a few albums available at Loronix. Tracks include:

Hello, Good Evening! Let's start today with Paulinho da Costa, a successful Brazilian musician that made his whole career out of Brazil, setting in the US since 1973. Paulinho da Costa is a percussionist and a requested sideman, playing with Sergio Mendes, Dizzy Gillespie, Joe Pass, Herbie Hancock, Ella Fitzgerald, among many other renowned artists. Paulinho da Costa solo albums were recorded sporadically with some really hard to track down, just like this one. Let's see.
