Walter Wanderley - Samba no Esquema de Walter Wanderley (1963)

zecalouro presents another Walter Wanderley LP. He never gets tired of Walter Wanderley. It is disgusting that this artist, that recorded 46 LPs, had died almost forgotten in 1986 caught up by a cancer.

Ten years after his passing, the record industry took many out of print to business presenting Walter Wanderley as a mere lounge player, making a lot of money.

zecalouro has been looking for music videos of Walter Wanderley or even spare pieces of live performances and did not find anything. It is amazing that so far we could not see Walter playing.

Anyway, let's flip the coin to this record that landmarks Walter Wanderley experiences with Samba, Walter Wanderley - Samba no Esquema de Walter Wanderley (1963), also the first Walter recording with guitar, sax and percussion. Another out of print gem. Tracks include:

01 - Garota de Ipanema

Maestro Simonetti e Orquestra RGE - Viagem Musical pelo Brasil (1959)

zecalouro received a few days ago from a mystery Loronixer a better vinyl rip and high-quality artworks of one of the best posts so far, Maestro Enrico Simonetti e Orquestra RGE - Brazil a Jato (1959).

If you miss the original, take it. If you love the original, please upgrade. The new artwork can be downloaded here.

I'm grabbing the original post and previous Loronixers comments.

Original Post:

This LP was released by RGE to celebrate Brazilian commercial aviation, something very common at the 50's, since there are some old LPs celebrating businesses. zecalouro, for instance, has an LP with "flight-listening" songs, sponsored by Cruzeiro airlines.

On this one, Maestro Enrico Simonetti e Orquestra RGE are in charge of all the tracks. This is the first LP out of a series of zecalouro releases to introduce Loronixers the Brazilian orchestras from the 50's. This one was on queued by zecalouro due a low-res artwork, but he made a nice work on a tiny thumbnail with imaging processing software to make things better. The cover shows a Caravelle from Varig Airlines.

This record is from 1959, as you can see on the article below, published in the Brazilian newspaper O Dia, at 19-11-1959:

"Homenageando a aviação comercial brasileira, a RGE lançou um long-play com o famoso maestro Enrico Simonetti e Orquestra RGE. O disco, cujo título é "Brasil a Jato", apresenta um desfile de músicas brasileiras bastante conhecidas de norte a sul.

Pedrinho Rodrigues e Samba Som Sete - Adeus Guanabara (1973)

It will be very hard to explain this record to everybody, since some knowledge on Rio de Janeiro politics and geography will be necessary, anyway, let's go!

Brazilia is one of the few cities in the world that was planned and designed since the beginning to be a country Capital, Capital of Brazil. In the past, Guanabara was Brazil's Capital. Everybody is used to listen Samba do Aviao from Antonio Carlos Jobim with lyrics that say: "Cristo Redentor, braços abertos sobre a Guanabara..."

Probably you are now asking yourself what happened with Guanabara. Guanabara state was what is known today as the City of Rio de Janeiro. In 1974, Guanabara was terminated and got the name of Rio de Janeiro, to be the Capital of the State of Rio de Janeiro.

Well, send me an email if you need clarification on this story. Actually, a sad story. Guanabara was cool. A great name.

This is the story behind this Pedrinho Rodrigues e Samba Som Sete - Adeus Guanabara (1973). Adeus Guanabara is Goodbye Guanabara in English. Doris Monteiro e Miltinho - Doris, Miltinho e Charme, Volume 1 (1970)

We had the chance to know a long time ago at Loronix - actually, less than 3 months - an Elza Soares LP with Miltinho making duet and talking to each other on a very relaxed way.

Miltinho is the kind of singer that likes to keep good companies and between 1970 and 1973; he made four LPs with Doris Monteiro, using the same successful formula: duet, samba, pout-pourri and happiness.

This is the first release, known as Doris, Miltinho e Charme, Volume 1. By the way, there is something about this cover that makes zecalouro feels dizzy... Tracks include:

• Esquecendo você (A.C. Jobim)
• Ilusão à-toa (Johnny Alf)
• Fotografia (A.C. Jobim)

• Rapaz de bem (Johnny Alf)

Ed Lincoln, Orlann Divo e Nilo Sergio - Ed Lincoln / Orlann Divo / Nilo Sergio (1966)

This is a hard to find LP released by Musidisc in 1966 featuring Ed Lincoln, Orlann Divo and Nilo Sergio. Nilo Sergio - even appearing at the third name - is Musidisc owner.

In spite of it, Nilo Sergio had to work hard with four compositions. Orlandivo and Ed Lincoln also give four compositions each. Tracks include:

01 - Quero Amar (Ed Lincoln)
02 - Zezinho (Orlann Divo)
03 - Romantic Partners (Nilo Sergio)
04 - Pra Que? (Ed Lincoln)
05 - Brincando de Samba (Orlann Divo)
06 - Espiral (Nilo Sergio)
07 - Tristeza (Ed Lincoln)
08 - Saudade, Solidao pra Mim (Orlann Divo)
09 - Cancao dos Vagabundos (Nilo Sergio)
10 - A Rosa (Ed Lincoln)
11 - Afim de Voce (Orlann Divo)
12 - Marias de Portugal (Nilo Sergio)

Tamba Trio - Brasil Saluda Mexico (1966)

This is an unusual Tamba Trio LP never released in CD. Brasil Saluda Mexico, 1966, has Rubens Ohana on drums, which replaced Helcio Milito in 1964.

Brazilian Varig airlines logo is on cover again, Tamba Trio should have flew for free with this marketing. Once again, the information available is uncertain. Probably recorded in Mexico, since the songs - Bossa Nova Standards - are translated to Spanish. Tracks include:

01 - La chica de Ipanema
02 - Corcovado
03 - Solo Bailo Samba
04 - Consolacion
05 - Berimbau
06 - Desafinado
07 - Amor en Paz
08 - Samba de Mi Terra
09 - El Cerro
10 - Agua de Beber

Helio Matheus - Helio Matheus (1975)

Sometimes zecalouro receives private emails from friends worried about Loronix going out of LPs in a near future. I use to say that we do not need to worry, since zecalouro counts on his Loronix friends to provide insights, recommendations and even sending their own vinyl rips to zecalouro mailbox.

By the way, zecalouro has been receiving outstanding rips from a Loronix friend that does not want to be identified, stay tuned.

This is a perfect example of how Loronixers add value. A friend from Germany said to look for records from an unknown Brazilian singer from the 70's called Helio Matheus. Here is the outcome, meet Helio Matheus with his 1975 self titled LP, a breathtaking set supported by this 5 star Brazilian artists: Helio Matheus (vocal, acoustic guitar), Ary Piassarolo (electric + acoustic guitars), Alexandre Malheiros (bass), Mamao (drums), Jose Roberto Bertrami (keyboards), Jose Claudio (12 strings guitars), Hermes, Ariovaldo and Chacal (rhythm, percussion) and several musicians at the brass section: Marcio Montarroyos, Ed Maciel, Oberdan Magalhaes among others.

I think that this LP can be easily considered an Azymuth record – all Azymuth is on the set - with Helio Matheus singing. Tracks include:

01 - Marraio
02 - Mais Kriola
03 - Cidadezinha
04 - Meu Diario
05 - Comunicacao Camisa 19
06 - Briguenta
07 - Meu Mundo de Monstros e Fantasia
08 - Voce se Foi
09 - Meu Segredo
10 - Ausencia

Celso Murillo e o Seu Conjunto - Tremendo Balanço (1964)

Closing this Instrumental day, zecalouro presents Celso Murillo e Seu Conjunto with this nice BossaJazz LP from 1964.

Tremendo Balanço has the participation of Astor Silva (trombone) and Edison Machado (drums), they really shine on this LP. The arrangements are from Lyrio Panicalli. Tracks include:

01 - Vai Menina Vai
02 - Sally's Tomatos
03 - Brincando Com Fogo
04 - Seu José
05 - Tristeza De Nós Dois
06 - Amanhecendo
07 - Jogado Fora

12 - Moça Flor

Formula 7 - Som Psicodelico, Volume 1 (1968)

Let's move to the top of the row some obscure instrumental LPs from the 60's. Starting with Formula 7, probably well known by many Loronix specialists, but completely obscure to zecalouro.

Formula 7 - Som Psicodelico, Volume 1 (1968), a groovy instrumental LP, full of brass and a nice rhythm section. Tracks include a mix of Brazilian songs with some American standards and a nice version of Batman TV show theme, as follow:

01 - Watermelon Man
02 - Pata Pata
03 - Ponteio
04 - Call me
05 - Bond Street
06 - Simplesmente
07 - Suck'um Up
08 - You Only Live Twice
09 - Alegria, Alegria
10 - Rossana
11 - I'm a Believer
12 - Batman

I hope someone has more to add to this LP.

Agostinho dos Santos - Agostinho Espetacular (1958)

Today we had Lamartine Babo, Bebeto and Sylvio Cezar and now the Legendary Agostinho dos Santos. Yesterday, we had only 1965 LPs. Planned? No, big coincidence. Each day has it uniqueness. Tomorrow, I will invite zecaloura (zecalouro's wife) to see Loronix, since she cannot pagedown until the third post without getting bored, my reputation should increase and all those beautiful female covers will be out of sight. That's great!

Silly green parrot.

Back to business with a Legend, Agostinho dos Santos, with an early out of print LP from 1958, Agostinho dos Santos Espetacular. Agostinho dos Santos is very important and deserves an AMG bio that should be read carefully before we reach the end. Tracks include:

01 - Balada Triste (Esdras Silva - Dalto Vogeler)
02 - Ate o Nome e Maria (Billy Blanco)
03 - Horoscopo (Mário Donato - Heitor Carrillo)
04 - Um Olhar, Um Sorriso (Guerra Peixe)
05 - Flamingo (Ricardo Macedo - Groya - Anderson)
06 - Meu Castigo (Onildo Almeida)
07 - Forças Ocultas (Antônio Bruno - Agostinho dos Santos)
08 - Tu es Dona de Tudo (Nazareno de Brito - Alcyr Pires Vermelho)
09 - Sede de Amor (Mário Albanese)
10 - Nem sol, nem paz, nem você (Fernando César - Otelo Zuccolo)
11 - Espera (Edison Borges - Vadico)
12 - Doi Muito Mais a Dor (Edison Borges - Vadico)

Agostinho dos Santos was an important singer and composer, closely linked with the presentation of bossa nova to a broader international audience. He toured through the U.S., Italy, Germany, Portugal, Chile, Uruguay, Argentina, Venezuela, and Mexico, perfoming in the U.S. and in Brazil with Johnny Mathis, and, in Italy, with Caterina Valente. He appeared on TV in France, Portugal, England, and Belgium. Among his compositions, can be mentioned "Forças Ocultas" (with Antônio Bruno), "Sozinho Com Você" (with Dirce Morais/Heitor Canilo), "Chuva Para Molhar O Sol" (with Edison Borges), "Podem Falar" (with Renato Duarte), "Distância é Saudade," and "Quem Levou Maria," among others.

His professional debut was as a crooner in Osmar Milani's orchestra. In 1951, he was hired by Rádio América, and, in 1955, by Rádio Nacional (both from São Paulo). The first record came in the same year, with "Meu Benzinho" (Polydor). The song was a hit, yielding a gold record and the Roquette Pinto trophy. He also had a rock & roll experience in the '50s, recording "Até Logo, Jacaré," version by Julio Nagib for "See You Later, Alligator," by Bill Halley & His Comets.

In the next year, he recorded the LP Uma Voz E Seus Sucessos, dedicated to Tom Jobim and Dolores Duran's songs. The album contained "Estrada Do Sol," which remained as one of his biggest hits. He was then invited by Tom Jobim and Vinícius de Moraes to record the soundtrack (together with João Gilberto) of the Marcel Camus film Orfeu do Carnaval, which launched several of the most famous classics of the soon-to-be bossa nova internationally). In 1958, he released the LPs Antônio Carlos Jobim e Fernando César Na Voz De Agostinho Dos Santos and Agostinho Espetacular. In the following year came O Inimitável Agostinho, in 1960 Agostinho, Sempre Agostinho, and in 1961 Agostinho Canta Sucessos.

In 1962, he participated in the Carneggie Hall's Bossa Nova Festival, backed by Oscar Castro-Neves's band. In the same year, he released A Presença de Agostinho, followed by Vanguarda (1963), Agostinho dos Santos (1966), Música Nossa (1967), Agostinho dos Santos (1970), and Agostinho dos Santos (1973). In 1968 was present at the III FIC with "Visão" (Antônio Adolfo/Tibério Gaspar). Died in a plane accident at the Orly airport.
