Dario Lopes - Guitarra em Nova Dimensao (1968)

Hello, good evening! I'm really proud to make available this album, the debut LP of a special musician that I had the chance to meet for the fist time today by a phone call. This is Dario Lopes, maestro, arranger, producer, guitarist, being also an important artist at TV Globo for more than thirty years as musician, composer and producer in charge of several TV Shows, such like: Roberto Carlos Especial, Fantastico, Chico Anysio Show, Os Trapalhoes, Video Show among many others. It is really nice when we have the chance to meet such important artist before showing one of his albums.

I would like to mention the great help given by Marcia Calmon and Tranka, which is the bassist of this album, by kindly sending Dario Lopes contact information. I will be with Dario tomorrow at his place, he lives close to me at Leme, Rio de Janeiro and my copy of Guitarra em Nova Dimensao will be my Christmas gift to our new friend Dario Lopes.

Orquestra Armorial - Chamada (1975)

Hello, good evening! Loronix has different segments of audiences, or friends, as I like to call. Each group has a different purpose and a unique way to interact with the website. The biggest group, with more than 50% of share is the friends who just love the music from Brazil. Inside this big group, there are many sub-categories, perhaps one day we speak about these sub-categories, but let's approach the remaining groups. They are several; we have journalists, people who work for the entertainment industry, collectors, etc.

I want to homage today a very special group, with several good friends identified, a group of people that works outside of Brazil with the music of Brazil on colleges, universities and institutions. They are mainly academic researchers and they find at Loronix a place to get in touch with music and information they would never had the chance to reach using any other channel. The first album we made by Orquestra Armorial made some noise between this group of friends. I received several enthusiastic emails with compliments of making this really unique orchestra available and this post is to render my small homage to these nice and very serious friends that makes a very important work promoting the music from Brazil.

Marilia Medalha - Caminhada (1972)

Marilia Medalha started her career in the 60's, at the city of Niterio, Rio de Janeiro, performing with Sergio Mendes on local nightclubs. Later, she became an active performer on Festivais da Cancao, TV shows and recordings, working together with renowned Brazilian artists, such as: Edu Lobo, Gilberto Gil, Caetano Veloso, Toquinho, Vinicius de Moraes, which is Marilia Medalha most frequent composer partner. In spite of this great start and the solid albums released in the late 60's, Marilia Medalha career did not evolve when entering the 70's, being this album one of her last ones. Let's see.

This is Marilia Medalha - Caminhada (1972), for RGE, featuring Marilia Medalha compositions blended with standards by Luiz Bonfa, Herivelto Martins, Humberto Teixeira and Avelino de Souza, which is the brother of zecalouro's grandfather. Rosinha de Valenca has a important participation as producer and arranger, delivering also her beautiful guitar player. Maestro Edson Frederico is in charge of strings arrangements. Tracks include:

Zaccarias e Seu Conjunto de Boite - Uma Noite no Country Club (1958)

Hello, good evening! Here we go on a truly amazing album recorded in 1958 by Maestro Zaccarias. This great cover features Zaccarias e Seu Conjunto de Boite at The Country Club of Rio de Janeiro, the most sophisticated club in Rio that is very hard to be admitted and with a very long list of really famous people barred in the entrance.

The Country Club already exists in Ipanema and I found today this awesome picture of Ipanema in the beginning of the last century, featuring the tennis courts of Country Club. Take a look how Ipanema was an empty place at the time; you can click the picture to get a larger version to see the courts and neighborhood details.

This is Zaccarias e Seu Conjunto de Boite - Uma Noite no Country Club (1958), for Columbia. If it is almost impossible to get inside the Country Club, at least we can check this picture with Cristo Redentor rising on the background and also listen to the music performed there in 1958 by Maestro Zaccarias and his group of top-notch musicians. Zaccarias had a contract with Country Club to perform every Sunday night with his Conjunto, featuring the legendary pianist Fats Elpidio, the bassist Bill and the drummer Romeu. In this session, they had also the participation of the special guests the pistonist Maurilio and Barao at the rhythm section. I think no one should skip this one. Tracks include:

Dick Farney e Quinteto - Jazz Festival Nr. 1 | Jam Session (1956)

Dick Farney is an artist that has the preference of many Loronixers. I think everybody had already the chance of taking one of his albums available at Loronix with Dick Farney performing as an instrumentalist or singing. He was very active on recordings, with more than 150 albums on a career that spans decades, starting in the mid 40's and ending in the late 80's. Dick Farney recorded 5 albums in the 10-inch format and I got really surprised today when I realize this is the first in the format made available at Loronix. I think this release will make the day of many friends, especially cvllos, which is the greatest Dick Farney fan I have ever seen. Let's see.

This is Dick Farney e Quinteto - Jazz Festival Nr. 1 | Jam Session (1956), for RGE, recorded live at Teatro de Cultura Artistica, Sao Paulo as part of Primeiro Festival Brasileiro de Jazz, organized by Jazz Club de Sao Paulo. Dick Farney e Quinteto line-up the same musicians available at the acclaimed Jazz After Midnight (1956), featuring, Dick Farney, Case, Rubinho, Choo Viana and Ismael Campiglia, credited as an amateur musician. So far, I could not identify each instrument Ismael Campiglia plays. Jazz Festival Nr. 1 is a short session, limited by the size of the 10-inch format, but is great music with a great performance by the legendary Case on sax. Tracks include:

Pedroca, Seu Piston e Seu Conjunto - Atendendo a Pedidos... (1959)

Hello, good evening! It is very hard to track down information about artists that everybody knows and it is, in theory, impossible to find information about artists that we never heard about. This is what happens with Pedroca, a Brazilian piston player that I had the chance to listen for the first time this week. As far I could search, Pedroca was active on recordings since his first 78 rpm for Todamerica in 1950 until his last known album, which is this one, recorded in 1959. Let's see.

This is Pedroca, Seu Piston e Seu Conjunto - Atendendo a Pedidos... (1959), for Sinter, featuring Pedroca performing a repertoire of Brazilian and international standards, including a nice rendition of Raul de Barros Na Gloria. Atendendo a Pedidos... stays in the middle of a Para Dancar and a Gafieira LP with very nice piston player by Pedroca. I don't need to say this cover artwork is really fantastic; let's keep the pace of beautiful covers today, such as we did yesterday. Tracks include:

Fagner - Quem Viver Chorara (1978)

This is at least an unusual release to Loronix, but I think this album is really worth checking out. There are much of my personal preferences on my decision to make available this really nice record that as far as I could check, never had a CD reissue. Raimundo Fagner, or Fagner, was very important on my background as an amateur musician and if you woke up this morning with an inquisitive mind, this is the right pick to get something really different from everything you have heard before at Loronix. Let's see.

This is Fagner - Quem Viver Chorara (1978), for Columbia, produced and arranged by Fagner. I wrote, "arranged by Fagner" and this is what makes this album a wonderful experience. Quem Viver Chorara is the kind of album that you can listen by the arrangements, very well done by Fagner. On every different spin you make there is new think that you did not realize it was there before. The album opens with Revelacao, a blockbuster that everybody in Brazil will remember at the fist seconds by the amazing guitar of Robertinho de Recife, don't let this first commercial track cheats you, from the second song until the end, everything turns beautiful, professional and very well played by a constellation of musicians in this session. I urge Loronixers to feedback this release. Tracks include:

Manfredo e Seu Conjunto - Bossa Nova Nova Bossa (1963)

I was really decided to make a classic Samba Jazz album as the last post of the day and I hope my choice will make Loronix friends really pleased. It has been a while since we made available an album by Manfredo Fest, a gifted pianist that released several albums in the style in the 60's. Bossa Nova Nova Bossa features Manfredo Fest with a Conjunto, not as a traditional trio, and accompanied by great musicians. This album was first made available with the help of Low Cost Music and now comes back to Loronix as it is no longer commercially available. Let's see.
