Hermeto Pascoal - Sinfonica em Quadrinhos | with Orquestra Sinfonica Jovem de Sao Paulo

This is a bootleg recording of Hermeto Pascoal with the Orquestra Sinfonica Jovem de Sao Paulo. No, I'm not going nuts, Hermeto used to urge the audiences to record his live performances and spread the tapes, in an attempt to overcome the indifference of recording companies to his music, that's what we have here.

Hermeto experiences with classical music on this tape, recorded with an orchestra at Teatro Municipal de Sao Paulo. The exact date of this recording is uncertain, probably it is from the late 80's. Anyway, this is Hermeto Pascoal on classics and you should not miss.

Tito Madi - Romance (1961)

And the last post goes to... Tito Madi - Romance (1961). Why zecalouro is saying that? Easy, as day passes, it has been really hard to decide the last post. Today, the choices were all great, solid records from end to end, but Tito Madi was selected.

Actually, I was planning the first Tito Madi LP, A Saudade Mata a Gente (1958), but the cover available here is not on a good resolution, great disappointment. Anyway you will have a lot to discover in Romance, a nice LP with Maestro Lyrio Panicali helping Tito with orchestra and chorus arrangements. A truly beautiful record that I hope you like. Gal Costa - Gal Costa (1969)

It has been a time since I was thinking about showing Loronixers some artists and LPs of Tropicalismo, also known as Tropicalia, a Brazilian art movement that arose in the late 1960s and encompassed theatre, poetry and music, among other forms. Key Tropicalismo artists are Caetano Veloso, Os Mutantes, Tom Zé, Gilberto Gil, Gal Costa, Maria Bethania, among others.

Tropicalia releases at Loronix will be very limited, introducing the main artists and their best LPs. I hope this will be a very successful series.

The first is Gal Costa with one of her best releases, Gal Costa - Gal Costa (1969), also known as Cinema Olympia, for Philips. I will not try a review of mine this time; AMG has done and includes this LP on AMG pick list. Find below AMG Review and tracks.

After Caetano Veloso broke out with his solo debut, the self-titled 1968 release recognized as the building block for the now infamous Brazilian Tropicalia movement, his friends and musical peers released similar albums, always upping the ante in terms of outrageousness and inventiveness. This release, the second of two self-titled albums released by Gal Costa in 1969, set the high watermark in terms of overall insanity and complete experimental freedom for the entire lot; not Veloso nor Gilberto Gil, Tom Zé, or even the rambunctious Os Mutantes stepped this far out into psychedelia, and even though Costa had hinted at the noisier aspects she was interested in exploring with her previous release, this album must have shocked listeners when it arrived on the shelves. In fact, 35 years of MPB -- or music from anywhere else in the world for that matter -- hasn't heard another sonic assault quite like this. Costa is a ball of contradictions here: overtly wild but in control; sweet and accessible, yet brash; and, at times, almost violent as she screams and moans her way through the album while spindly, whiny guitars mix with soulful bass grooves, bombastic drums, exotic horns, woodwinds, and strings. The sonic textures are taken completely over the top with judicious use of delays, reverbs, and various production techniques new and exciting at the time. When taken all together, the listener may not at first notice the high quality of the songwriting for the unreal, emotional freak-outs laced throughout the performances. Costa's crazy improvisations over Caetano Veloso's tune "The Empty Boat" serve as evidence of this delightful impulsiveness when placed side by side with Veloso's own rather forward-thinking recording of the song, which sounds positively conservative by comparison. All in all, Gal Costa is an indescribable, unpredictable, ambitious, and fun record preserving a slice of time when Brazil was at its most controversial state musically and politically and is a must-have for any psychedelic collection. I'm surprised that Pery has so many fans at Loronix. We need to check one thing, on an interview for Jo Soares a couple of months ago, Pery Ribeiro said that he was the first to record the anthological song Garota de Ipanema, question: is this Garota de Ipanema the first recording or there is another previous one released on single, EP or 78 rpm? Eduardo Conde - Minha Chegada (1969)

If you are from Brazil, you will probably have a surprise with this post. Eduardo Conde - Minha Chegada (1969), for Philips, is the debut LP of an artist that decided later to be an actor, that's why people in Brazil naturally associates Eduardo Conde as the TV Globo actor.

Eduardo Conde has started his singer career in 1967, guided by Beth Carvalho that teach him his first acoustic guitar chords. Conde was also member of Conjunto 3D and participated with Beth Carvalho at record session of the LP Muito Na Onda. Eduardo Conde has passed a few years ago, on the very early age of 56.

Sivuca - Sivuca (1972)

I like to say thank you once in a while, but this time I want to say that I *need* to say Thank You. I have received today eight contributions. Amazing. It is also necessary to say that the contributions are being queued, so yours should wait some time to reach Loronix.

This is the contribution number 7 of this Friday, not queued because I'm a fan of this artist and this beautiful cover makes this post something very hard to resist. This is Sivuca - Sivuca (1972), for Vanguard and issued in Brazil in 1974 for Copacabana.

Zezinho e Seu Som Balanco - Rio... Suave e a Noite (195?)

Let's continue the day with the type of released that I like most, the obscure release. This is a Mr. X. contribution, Zezinho e Seu Som Balanco - Rio... Suave e a Noite (195?), for Cartaz. I've been searching for the release date of this album for weeks; my best guess is the late 50's with some chance to early 60's.

I don't know if Zezinho, Jose Baptista da Silva Jr., is a Maestro, but he is in charge of arrangements and piano with the accompaniment of Lula (piston), Drausio (trombone), Schitinie (sax), Jurandir (drums), Cacau (guitar), Gerson (bass) and Chacal, Turco and Nascimento (percussion). I'm also betting all my five dollars that Turco is in fact the legendary drummer Turquinho. Tracks include:

Portinho e Sua Orquestra - Fogo nos Metais (1965)

Hello, Good Night! I decided to start the day with Portinho, not the drummer, but the Maestro Portinho with Portinho e Sua Orquestra - Fogo nos Metais (1965), for Continental. This record is exactly what is described in the title and shown at this nice cover artwork, Sambas on an orchestra, very swinging and dancing with brass instruments at foreground with Maestro Portinho arrangements.

This release should not be confused with others homonymous record released by Maestro Portinho in 1963 for Philips and 1974 for RCA. There is also another similar release for Copacabana in 1971, Portinho e Sua Orquestra Escaldante - Fogo nos Metais. Tracks include:

Walter Wanderley - Kee-Ka-Roo (1967)

When I just accepted the fact that Loronix was running out of new Walter Wanderley releases, someone - that asked for not being identified even by aliases - sent me this Walter Wanderley - Kee-Ka-Roo (1967), for Verve. The original cover is gatefold, when closed, shows only the first half of this image. I decided to experiment, presenting front and back cover opened.

This is the last Walter Wanderley release for Verve, very nice production as you can realize by this cover. This is Walter at his back with eleven instrumental tracks plus one track - Wait Until Dark - sung by Marge Dodson. Walter is a really great figure, some of his later works has songs with some sad titles such this mentioned Wait Until Dark, Take a Chance with Me and Errinho a Toa, for instance.

Walter has great musicians on the recording session for Kee-Ka-Roo, including the American guitar player John Pizarelli, as follows: Walter Wanderley (organ and electric piano), John Pizarelli (guitar), Jose Marino (bass), Dom um Romao (drums), Alfonso de Paula (trumpet and percussion), Jerome Richardson (flute) and Bobby Rosengarden (percussion and vibes).
