Ribamar e Zito Righi - Ribamar & Zito Righi (1963)

Hello, Good Evening! The rain falls with no mercy in Rio de Janeiro and zecalouro does not use to fly on rainy days. It was a day to check the very old and forgotten music with some great findings to Loronixers. Starting with this one, just to take advantage of the great feedback given to the last Caetano Rodrigues contribution, the first Zito Righi solo album, Sax de Ouro. Now it is time to check what Zito Righi delivers with his third and last LP, in partnership with the pianist Ribamar. Let's see.

This is Ribamar e Zito Righi - Ribamar & Zito Righi (1963), for Musidisc, featuring Ribamar piano and Zito Righi sax tenor, accompanied by not credited musicians on bass, drums, guitar and percussion. Toni Vestane once again plays his role of special guest singing track 03 - Ai de Mim. This is a very relaxed session with Ribamar and Zito Righi performing a repertoire based on Brazilian, French, Spanish and American tunes. Tracks include:

01 - Que É Que Eu Faço (Ribamar (1) / Dolores Duran)
02 - Canção dos Olhos Tristes (Tito Madi)
03 - Ai de Mim (Capiba) - with Toni Vestane
04 - Aimer Comme Je T'aime (H. Giraud)
05 - Una Mujer (Paul Misraki)
06 - Quando Vuelva a Tu Lado (Maria Grever)
07 - Sunday Monday Or Always (J. Heusen / J. Burke)
08 - Sim Ou Não (Zito Righi)
09 - Só Em Teus Braços (Tom Jobim)
10 - Onde Estava Eu (Armando Cavalcanti / Victor Freire)

Nilo Amaro e Seus Cantores de Ebano - Os Anjos Cantam (1962)

Here we go on another essential record for any series Brazilian popular music collector, a really different album, taking in consideration the music we are used to hear at Loronix. Nilo Amaro e Seus Cantores de Ebano is a Brazilian vocal group that introduced with this first album, Os Anjos Cantam, several new elements to Brazilian music, such like the spirituals and gospel. Their repertoire features several styles, such as: Samba, Blues, Dorival Caymmi and international standards, a unique experience. Let’s see.

This is Nilo Amaro e Seus Cantores de Ebano - Os Anjos Cantam (1962), for Odeon, featuring a fascinating vocal group assembled by a mezzo soprano, a contralto, two bass, one tenor and three baritones. Unfortunately, I do not have the names of each group member, with the exception of Nilo Amaro and Noriel Vilela, a well-known artist by Loronixers that has a beautiful, strong and unique voice. My highlight goes to 01 - Leva Eu Sodade, 05 - Down by the Riverside and 07 - A Lenda do Abaete, but all tracks are solid, providing together a delightful listening experience. Tracks include:

01 - Leva Eu Sôdade (Tito Neto / Alventino Cavalcanti)
02 - Boa Noite (Francisco J. Silva / Isa M. da Silva)
03 - Fiz a Cama na Varanda (Dilú Mello / Ovídio Chaves)
04 - Canção de Ninar Meu Bem (Bidú Reis / Gracindo Jr.)
05 - Down By The Riverside (D. Jordan)
06 - Greenfields (Gilkyson / Deher / Miller / Vrs. Romeo Nunes)
07 - A Lenda do Abaeté (Dorival Caymmi)
08 - Azulão (Jaime Ovalle / Manuel Bandeira)
09 - Eu e Você (Roberto Muniz / Jairo Aguiar)
10 - Minha Graúna (Tito Neto / Avarese)
11 - Dorinha (Tito Neto / Ari Monteiro)
12 - A Noiva (La Novia) (J. Prieto / Vrs. Fred Jorge)

Helena de Lima - Dentro da Noite (1956) 10-inch

I know this album was released first in other places, recently made available at Green Eyed Lady, which celebrates today her 100,000 visitors milestone, and perhaps you already have this important album in your collection. However, I think he also belongs to Loronix, and I put all my resources available to pick up a very nice vinyl and make the transfer with attention. Anyway, consider it an upgrade if you already have your copy and take it as a must have if it is the first time you are being introduced to it. Let's see.

This is Helena de Lima - Dentro da Noite (1956), for Continental, 10-inch, the first album by the Brazilian singer Helena de Lima, backed up by the piano of Ribamar. Dentro da Noite also brings the first recording of a very early composition of Antonio Carlos Jobim and Newton Mendonca, 05 - Foi a Noite. Do not miss this beautiful album. Tracks include:

01 - Antigamente (Vadico / Jarbas Melo)
02 - Abandonado (Esdras Pereira da Silva / Ribamar (1) / Walter Barros)
03 - Renúncia (Marino Pinto)
04 - Não Há de Que (Helena de Lima / Marino Pinto / Mário Rossi)
05 - Foi a Noite (Tom Jobim / Newton Mendonça)
06 - E Nada Mais (César Siqueira / Maria Rita)
07 - Foi Você (Marino Pinto / Paulo Soledade)
08 - Revolta (Vadico / Marino Pinto)

Additional info: I forgot to say that Bossa Brasileira was the first website to make this album available for Brazilian music fans last year. Bossa Brasileira is owned and maintained by Thiago Mello that delivers professional reviews in English and Portuguese. I recommend and urge Loronixers to read Thiago's review on Helena de Lima and the solid Brazilian music selection available at Bossa Brasileira, http://bossa-brasileira.blogspot.com.

Ramsey Lewis Trio - Bossa Nova (1962)

Hello, Good Evening! Let's start with a very successful formula, which is Bossa Nova recorded outside of Brazil by an international artist. Actually, I cannot understand why I did not release this one earlier, it is among my favorites in the style. Let's what happens?

This is Ramsey Lewis Trio - Bossa Nova (1962), for Argo, also featuring the Brazilian singer Carmen Costa and Josef(?) Paulo, which is probably the Brazilian singer Jose Paulo that were with Carmen Costa and the constellation of Bossa Nova legends at Carnegie Hall first Bossa Nova US concert in 1963. Ramsey Lewis Trio is Ramsey Lewis (piano), Eldee Young (bass) and Redd Holt (drums), delivering a nice job, really above the averege of the very beginning US Bossa Nova albums. Tracks include:

01 - Samba de Orfeu
02 - Manha de Carnaval
03 - As Criancinhas
04 - A Noite do Meu Bem
05 - O Pato
06 - A Felicidade
07 - Whirpoll
08 - Cara de Palhaco
09 - Cancao para Geralda

Silvio Cesar - Silvio Cesar (1968)

It is frustrating when you have plans and they are jeopardized by problems with the Internet and other computer issues. I was saving this one for another time and need to make it today due these problems. Anyway, this album was one of the first ones I got in the beginning of Loronix. I bought in Sao Paulo, following an advice from Caetano Rodrigues on one of those vinyl fairs there. Let's see.

This is Silvio Cesar - Silvio Cesar (1968), for Odeon. A recommendation by Caetano is really worth checking and starting by this cover, everything runs really nice with this album. Silvio Cesar has a strong identification with Bossa Nova, recording several albums since the 60's with also several participations on other artists’ album. This self titled Odeon release has arrangements of a duo of renowned Maestros, Joao Teodoro Meirelles, also known as J.T. Meirelles, in charge of tracks 04 - Cantiga Antiga and 09 - Se Eu Pudesse te Dizer Tudo que Sinto and Lyrio Panicalli, responsible for the other ones. Tracks include:

01 - O Gato (Silvio César / Sylvan Paezzo)
02 - Gingilin - o Último Palhaço (Silvio César / Sylvan Paezzo)
03 - Rataplan (Roberto Menescal / Ed Lincoln / Silvio César)
04 - Cantiga Antiga (Sylvan Paezzo / Silvio César)
05 - Kid Risadinha (Silvio César / Sylvan Paezzo)
06 - João Juca Júnior (Silvio César / Sylvan Paezzo)
07 - Pra Te Dizer (Ed Lincoln / Silvio César)
08 - Zé Doidinho (Silvio César / Sylvan Paezzo)
09 - Se Eu Pudesse Te Dizer Tudo Que Sinto (Silvio César)
10 - Nascimento Vida e Morte de Um Samba (Roberto Menescal / Silvio César)

Music Video | Tamba Trio - So Danco Samba & Garota de Ipanema

This is a great Tamba Trio performance, but I had to think a lot before showing to Loronixers. The image is low-res, such as this opening picture, the sound is out of sync and the overall quality is really poor. If you mind with these issues, skip it. If you take it in consideration from a historical perspective, go ahead. Luiz Eca is all happiness, Bebeto swaps between bass and flute and Osmar Milito delivers solid drumming wearing a vest, his trademark. That's the deal. Let’s see.

Hope uEnjoy!

III Loronix Singles & EPs Festival - Os Cariocas & Elis Regina

Yesterday's III Loronix Singles Festival had no feedback, perhaps I need to fine tune my picks and that's what I'm trying to accomplish with the III Loronix EP Festival, featuring two artists with great popularity among Loronixers. Let's see.

This is Os Cariocas - Os Cariocas de Quatrocentas Bossas (1965), for Philips, the "reduced" version of the homonymous LP, one of the Os Cariocas albums that I like most and one of the nicest covers so far at Loronix. Tracks include:

Now we are going with four Elis Regina records in a row, one EP and three singles, as follows:

01 - Osanah
02 - Nada Sera Como Antes

This is the great close with the one that I like most, a single, recorded live at Teatro Record, Sao Paulo. Tracks include:

Maria Lucia Godoy - O Canto da Amazonia (1969) with Neco

I was reluctant to make this post today; something on my mind was saying to leave it for another day. Then I started wondering about waking up late on Sunday and start the day on a slow manner hearing this fantastic music. This was enough to make me confident to show this album to Loronixers as the last post of today. This is not popular music, it is classical music, but it is so beautiful that you should make a try. Perhaps O Canto da Amazonia never had a CD reissue and I'm really glad to find this album, listed as one of the 100 Brazilian essential records at Luiz Americo website.

This is Maria Lucia Godoy - O Canto da Amazonia (1969), for Museu da Imagem e do Som, recorded to celebrate the 300th anniversary of Manaus city, Amazonas state, featuring the classical singer Maria Lucia Godoy, the guitar of Neco and arrangements of Maestro Guerra Peixe. O Canto da Amazonia has also another very important Brazilian artist, the composer Waldemar Henrique, a very important artist to Amazon region by his musical translations of the Amazon legends and myths, such as: Matintaperera, Uirapuru, Curipira, among others. Waldermar Henrique is in charge of most of Side B compositions of O Canto da Amazonia.

Maria Lucia Godoy is a great surprise. I think she brings all the birds from Amazon on her singing, being also in charge of a great accomplishment, the repertoire selection. Neco proves to be a real nice musician with his guitar being heard in all tracks. A small ensemble of clarinet, flute and cello was also in this great session. I urge Loronixers to feedback this release, which is dedicated to the great Amazon region and a very good Loronix friend from Canada. Tracks include:
