Raul de Souza - Til Tomorrow Comes (1979)

I said yesterday that we would have Samba albums today, but I changed my mind to show a Raul de Souza album that never had a CD reissue. Although not a Samba album, Til Tomorrow Comes will make you kick around the house, since it seeks harmony with the moment experience by the music in the late 70’s, especially in the year of 1979, where disco music dominated the charts in US and abroad. This is essentially a disco music album, it has nothing to do with jazz, and it is very important to understand this concept before jumping into it. Let’s see.

This is Raul de Souza – Til Tomorrow Comes (1979), for Capitol, the third out of three albums released by Raulzinho at Capitol, following the acclaimed Sweet Lucy and Don’t Ask My Neighbors, both produced by George Duke and also never released in CD. Actually, George Duke’s production is what differs Til Tomorrow Comes, produced by Arthur Wright, which is probably responsible for this first and only Raul de Souza disco music experience. Video | Copacabana Palace Movie

This is an amazing collaboration from Loronix official correspondent in Italy, Mr. Gabrielli Brunini, presenting us the whole footage of legendary movie Copacabana Palace, filmed in Rio de Janeiro with the participation of Joao Gilberto, Antonio Carlos Jobim, Luiz Bonfá and Os Cariocas.

Now we have much more than it was available before, including several bikini scenes, the whole beach action and Antonio Carlos Jobim acting, not just as a musician. I made four excerpts with their participation, as follows:

1) Open Credits, with beautiful aerial imagery of Rio de Janeiro and movie credits.

2) Beach Take ONE, with the already known beach images and complements (take a look at Luiz Bonfa with a fish at the post opening).

3) Beach Take TWO, with never seen images.

4) With The Family, showing the boys and their families watching a Samba School parade on TV.

The film is delicious and brings several 1962 images of Rio de Janeiro. Thank you Gabrielli, Loronixers will be pleased with your fantastic collaboration.

Laurindo Almeida - Concert Creations for Guitar by Laurindo Almeida (1949)

Hello, good evening! I believe this is the oldest LP already available at Loronix. Another awesome Jorge Mello’s contribution. This is the first album released by Laurindo Almeida in the United States, after a period of intense activity as part of Stan Keaton Orchestra. We all know what happened in the following years, Laurindo Almeida recorded three albums with Bud Shank that are considered precursors of Bossa Nova and became a celebrated musician. Perhaps it would be wiser to wait for 2009 to celebrate this LP 60th years anniversary, however, could not resist, for the happiness of everybody. Let’s see.

Geraldo Vespar e Seu Violao - Samba Nova Geracao (1965)

Hello, good evening! It is really nice that Jorge Mello did not forget to include Maestro Geraldo Vespar among his last contribution to Loronix. Caetano Rodrigues had already pleased us in the last year with other Geraldo Vespar releases, and this is the only one that really needs and update and a highlight in our frontpage. Geraldo Vespar is among my favorite Brazilian musicians. I would like to say that I had the opportunity to meet him last year and I keep a photo with the Maestro with several backups around my place. It was an incredible day. I made a special groundwork for a supposed interview with questions that were not made. I was very nervous. I hope this update brings good memories for the Maestro and also provide to Loronixers a chance to have really high quality music made by a musician that will have always a special place in our community. Let’s see.

This is Geraldo Vespar e Seu Violao – Samba Nova Geracao (1965), for Odeon, featuring Geraldo Vespar violao and arrangements in all tracks performing a nice repertoire of Brazilian standards, including one Geraldo Vespar composition, 08 – Ceu Sem Sol. The Maestro has the accompaniment of a traditional bass, guitar, drums conjunto, orchestra and also performs solo in some tracks. Samba Nova Geracao was awarded as the best new artist’s album in 1965. I only regret that Odeon has not given proper credits to Geraldo Vespar co-workers in this session. Tracks include:

Vanja Orico - Viagem Musical com Vanja Orico (1955)

Hello, good evening! I want to introduce Loronixers to a new artist, which is a very old recommendation by Refer, made as soon as Loronix has started. By the way, it has been a long time I do not see Refer on comments. I hope he shows up with this album, another nice contribution by Jorge Mello. Vanja Orico is an extraordinary artist, being also an actress, actually, her career as an actress is stronger than her singing activities. She is really a complex and intriguing woman. Let's see.

This is Vanja Orico - Viagem Musical (1955), for Sinter, which is Vanja Orico debut LP, performing a repertoire based on different Brazilian traditional music from several regions, including Samba, Baiao, Xote, Toada, Capoeira and some other styles I never heard about, such as Coco and Rojao. The result is very satisfactory with Vanja Orico delivering beautiful singing and some interpretation of each style. A Google search on Vanja Orico returns loads and loads of information and I learned today that her first experience as a singer was in 1950 when she was 16 studying at a num college in Europe. Vanja Orico came out one day for a walking and found a movie set on a busy street in Italy. There was Frederico Fellini that invited Vanja Orico to make a participation on his movie singing Meu Limao, Meu Limoeiro and playing violao. Thanks Jorge Mello for this first and really nice Vanja Orico album at Loronix. Tracks include:

Luiz Eca - Laços Concerto Show (1976)

Hello, good evening! Tonight we will have a really unusual record, which is an album that I have been tracking down with Caetano Rodrigues for more than a year, placing search alerts on e-bay and regularly searching other places at the Internet. I cannot remember exactly, but I think everything started whe we identified Luiz Eca at the left with that big hair. I cannot remember also the reason why we named this album as Quarteto Lacos, as the cover shows only a trio with Luizinho Eca, Claudia Versiani and Marcos Paulo, which I think it is the same Brazilian actor Marcos Paulo. Anyway, Jorge Mello should receive all credits and compliments for sending this one from his private collection. Let's see what we have here.

This is Lacos Concerto Show (1976), for Som Livre. Little I know about this live recording, except the reviews I read on e-bay and popsike saying it is has some killer funky fusion tracks, great electric keys, sticking percussion and cool treated wah wah guitar cuts with great scat voice. There is a quartet backing the trio of main performers, featuring Claudio Caribe, Helio Delmiro, Luizao and Marcio Montarroyos, which is probably the real Quarteto Lacos. Due some speaking between music during a live concert, it was not possible to deliver individual tracks, so you will find a single file for side A and another single file for the whole side B. Bola Sete e Seu Conjunto - Travessuras do Bola 7 (1958)

Hello, Good evening! I never had the hope to share a single album released by the legendary Bola Sete recorded in his early Brazilian years in the 50's, but with the help of Jorge Mello, everything has changed and this is the second out of a lot of Bola Sete album from this period being released at Loronix. I think these early Bola Sete records are very important posts, his early album never were reissued in the digital age and this is an unique chance to get along with the early works of this truly amazing musician. Let's see.

This is Bola Sete e Seu Conjunto - Travessuras do Bola 7 (1958), for Odeon, featuring Bola Sete playing electric guitar backed by Conjunto and perfoming a repertorie blending Brazilian standards and a few Bola Sete compositions. As Travessuras do Bola 7 was released in the same year of Bola 7 e 4 Trombones, following the same concept with amazing guitar solos and very dancing cuts. My highlight goes to Bola Sete and Ary Barroso compositions, including also the track featured at Loronix Preview Center, Canta Brasil by David Nasser and Alcyr Pires Vermelho. Odeon did not credit musicians in this session. Tracks include:

Elza Laranjeira - Ternura (1961)

Hello, good evening! Elza Laranjeira was such like a mania in the beginning of Loronix. She
released only four LPs, and two of them are available at Loronix, while the third was taken due a RGE Classicos reissue. You can use the small thumbnails to reach the ones at Loronix and the Amazon product widgets at the post closing to reach the RGE reissue and also a compilation released last year. Although recording only four LPs, Elza Laranjeira was a very important singer during the 40's and 50's, releasing more than thirty 78RPMs. Let's see.

This is Elza Laranjeira - Ternura (1961), for RGE, the second LP released by Elza Laranjeira for RGE, with the same formula of her debut album with Maestro Simonetti in charge of the arrangements and a repertoire of Sambas and ballads. Forgive me if I'm wrong and this is something that needs confirmation, but I always heard about Walter Wanderley delivering organ playing on Ternura. You should take it for a hearing or at least use Loronix Preview Center to check it out. By the way, this is another fine release sponsored by the great Jorge Mello. Tracks include:

Clementina de Jesus - Clementina, Cade Você (1970)

Hello, good evening! In that spirit of Samba on Saturday at Loronix, Jorge Mello presents today a very important album in the style, the debut LP of one of the most expressive Samba interpreters in Brazil, Clementina de Jesus, who curiously was discovered to the general public only when she was 62, being immediately acknowledged in Brazil and abroad. Let's see.

This is Clementina de Jesus - Cade Voce Clementina (1970), for MIS, once again delivering an important album. Clementina de Jesus was introduced to the public by Turibio Santos in 1964 in his show O Menestrel and a few months later she had and important participation at Rosas de Ouro musical and the resulting album, which is a missing piece at Loronix.
