Carmen Costa / Paulo Marquez - A Musica de Paulo Vanzolini (1974)

Hello, good evening! Many thanks to every positive vibration sent at the comment section of my last “getting well” announcement. By the way, this post is so far one of the most commented at Loronix. This kind of support makes me feel great and brings the extra energy needed to develop Loronix according with my new health condition. Thanks a lot!

Anyway, this is a very old contribution made by our good friend Joao SP, an album recorded by one of the singers that I like most at the legendary label Marcus Pereira. I know it was made available before at the recommended Toque Musical, but it is so solid that I think it should be also listed at Loronix. And it has been a long time since we made an authentic Samba release. Let’s see.

This is Carmen Costa / Paulo Marquez – A Musica de Paulo Vanzolini (1974), for Marcus Pereira, featuring compositions by the one of the most important Samba composers from São Paulo state, Paulo Vanzolini. Carmen Costa shares the main performer role with Paulo Marquez, well-known by his excellent album recorded in 1959 with Billy Blanco compositions, featuring arrangements by Maestro Radames Gnattali. Personnel listing does not bring detailed information on musicians in the session, except by the participation of Maestro Portinho and Maestro Elcio Alvarez as arrangers with Regional do Jogral as the accompaniment group. It was a great pleasure to read and approve each comment sent on the last “get well soon” post. Thanks everybody for supporting me and keeping Loronix alive and busy during these crazy days. This is Toquinho – Ao Vivo em Montreux (1982), for BMG Ariola. I could not sleep well today without updating Loronix, and this is a really nice post. I never heard about Toquinho’s participation at Montreux Jazz Festival. As far as I could search, this album never had the chance of a digital release and it is pretty unknown. Toquinho plays, sings and is backed by a constellation of Brazilian musicians, including the legendary bassist Azeitona. Tracks include:

Vinicius de Moraes & Amalia Rodrigues – Amalia / Vinicius | Vinicius / Amalia (1970)

Hello, good evening! This album brings a live recording featuring the Brazilian poetry, composer, singer and diplomat Vinicius de Moraes and the acclaimed Amalia Rodrigues, perhaps the most important Portuguese singer, known as “Rainha do Fado” the “Queen of Fado”, which is a Portuguese music genre. Vinicius de Moraes was friend of Amalia Rodrigues and according with back cover liner notes this album was recorded in 19th December 1968 at Amalia Rodrigues place, on a farewell meeting to Vinicius de Moraes, leaving Portugal at that time. Let’s see.

This is Vinicius de Moraes & Amalia Rodrigues – Amalia / Vinicius | Vinicius / Amalia (1970), for Decca, a live performance, recorded without the participants consent using hidden microphones. The session has the atmosphere of a friend’s meeting, featuring music and poetry, also including renowned Portuguese poetries, such like: David Mourão-Ferreira, Natália Correia, Carlos Ary dos Santos and Alain Oulman. This record was released two years after the performance in 1970, and I’m presenting here the first Portuguese issue in the original double LP format. I think we have today a great treat to Vinicius de Moraes fans and our friends from Portugal. Tracks include:

Bob Fleming - Bob Fleming Interpreta Boleros Volume 3 (1965)

Hello, good evening! I’m happy I don’t need to buy a Mac. I’m old for such change. I would like to inform that my computer nightmare has gone to a term today. Thanks a lot to everybody who wrote me with suggestions, tips and tricks. It seems that everybody is a computer specialist today. Thanks a lot Matt from the essential Beta Particle for making available resources to a virtual conference call, not needed because Jason guided this computer illiterate parrot to a utility that fixed the problem as magic.

Anyway, now I can focus on something I’m doing that has a strong influence to this post. I’m trying to write an article to approach on a structured manner a fascinating aspect of Brazilian instrumental music in the 60’s, which is the use of nicknames by renowned artists on records, such like Ed Lincoln recording as Don Pablo de Havana, the last released provided by Jose Ignacio Neto. It is incredible the number of musicians who made such thing. I think the most popular and relevant case is Bob Fleming, a fictional musician created by Nilo Sergio’s Musidisc label that had two artists playing the Bob Fleming role, the legendary Moacyr Silva and Zito Righi. Let’s see.

This is Bob Fleming – Bob Fleming Interpreta Boleros Volume 3 (1965), for Masterpiece Masters, a Musidisc label. I never found official information on which musician is behind each Bob Fleming release, but this one seems to be a Moacyr Silva session, delivering renditions of Bolero standards with his sax tenor. This cover is scaring at a first sight, but soon you will get used with the naked ladies around the sax. Tracks include:

Gilberto Gil & Rita Lee - Refestanca (1977)

Hello, good evening! I’m having a bad time with my notebook. I use Microsoft Windows and since yesterday, I cannot reach the explorer file manager interface, the taskbar, which is that useful lower bar used to switch between opened applications and the start menu. Sorry for using this space for this kind of moaning, but I think I’m losing this battle this time. Perhaps a computer virus has got me. I don’t know. A simple task like opening a word processor is a great effort. Anyway, if someone has the solution for this problem, please get in touch.

Sometimes your state of mind influences the music made available at Loronix, and this post is exactly the case. It has a lot of energy and an anthological performance by two very important artists, one of them being released for the first time at Loronix. Let’s see.

This is Gilberto Gil & Rita Lee – Refestanca (1977), for Som Livre, featuring Gilberto Gil, an artist that does not need explanation and Rita Lee, the well known Os Mutantes vocalist. Refestanca is a very well recorded live concert, probably Gilberto Gil’s concert with Rita Lee as the invited artist. Gilberto Gil brings his whole band, Refestanca, also the album title and the opening and closing track. Rita Lee also brings her band at that time, Tutti Fruti, which is all about Rock and Roll. The outcome is very nice, they mix their bands, making everything sounds confusion at the first hearing, but as soon as you get used, it is hard to ignore cuts like Ovelha Negra, Back in Bahia, Odara and Domingo no Parque, my selection to Loronix Preview Center. Antonio Adolfo & Grupo No em Pingo D'Agua - Joao Pernambuco | 100 Anos (1983)h

Hello, good evening! This is a very important post that brings to Loronix a musician that I never had the chance to speak about. It is also important to say we are only getting in touch with this musician with the help of Jorge Mello that kindly made available this album to Loronix, directly from his amazing collection. I have been wondering today how many friends from Loronix community had the chance to know the works of Joao Pernambuco, considered by many one of the fathers, if not the father of the Brazilian violao.

Joao Pernambuco was born in 1883 and his work as an instrumentalist is only available by 78 RPMs recorded in the 1920’s decade. But his legacy and his contribution to Brazilian music remain n strong influence throughout a century, shaping the works of musicians such like Jacob do Bandolim, Meira, Baden Powell, Mauricio Carrilho, Raphael Rabello, among many others.


This photo taken in 1913 at the city of Petropolis, Rio de Janeiro featuring Donga, a non identified musician, Joao Pernambuco and Pixinguinha comes from an awesome website that I had the chance to know today with the help of Jorge Mello and this fantastic contribution. Bossa 4 - Repeteco Outra Vez (1968)

Hello, good evening! I’m back, and it is always very nice to be back to Loronix. Thanks for being here! I spoke about a given Musidisc release to stay on top of the excellent JIN contribution. However, a technical problem with the music and image transfer occurs and we will need to wait an additional day for it. Meanwhile, I want to share an album that certainly would not be a strong candidate to Loronix under normal conditions. It was released by Equipe, another legendary Brazilian record company in the 60’s, featuring a group that I never heard about, which is Bossa 4, a blend of instrumental and vocal group, featuring guitar, bass, drums, percussion and a very nice organist. Let’s see.

Ed Lincoln - Don Pablo de Havana (1960)

Hello, good evening! I’m away from home this week, but I’m decided to make two albums today, both by the legendary label Musidisc. I’m not sure I have everything set for the second. If you see this one as the first post across this Thursday, don’t worry, there will be another chance when I get back home.

Actually, this album is perfect to be at the front page for a whole week, another solid release sponsored by the owner and maintainer of AVOLTA, Jose Ignacio Neto, JIN, from the third generation of the Ignacio family, a family devoted to Brazilian music. Let’s see.

This is Don Pablo de Havana e Sua Orquestra (1960), for Musidisc. Little I know about this album, except the review provided by Jose Ignacio Neto confirming that Don Pablo de Havana is Ed Lincoln using a different name. By the way, JIN seems to have very nice connections with Brazilian music. JIN mentions another album recorded by Ed Lincoln as Don Pablo de Havana, Disco Latin. I’m 98% sure that I have this album, but I need to get back home to confirm. I hope I can get back to the final post today, meanwhile stay with Jose Ignacio Neto review on this pleasant album. Ed Lincoln Goes Latin! by Jose Ignacio Neto

"Many recording artists have recorded using different names due to contractual reasons. Bob Fleming and Moacyr Silva who feature a lot on Loronix are of course the same person, but the great Ed Lincoln took it one step beyond. He told me that he loved to record under different names - a new name for each style or even for each record. He recorded as Les 4 Cadillacs, De Savoya Combo (his real name is Eduardo Lincoln De Saboia) and in the 70s and 80s countless American sounding names.

Here for this cha cha adventure he becomes Don Pablo de Havana! We can only guess at the original line up but it would probably have included Ed on piano (and bass?) and Rubens Bassini can surely be heard on bongos? Possibly, Juarez on sax and flutes.

Ed made a number of these records for Musidisc including one called Disco Latin!

The versions of Ary Barroso's Na Baixa de Sapateiro and Aquerela do Brasil are really beautiful.

This album appears to be a reissue of part of another Musidisc LP with a cover showing a galo (cockerel) but that LP has different track listing. This was normal for Musidisc to reuse their recordings and repackage them." JIN

Rildo Hora - A Vez e a Hora de Rildo Hora (1971)

Hello, good evening! Many things I learned and still learning with Loronix and the community created around our website. Among them, the generation of demand around an artist or an album is particularly interesting. These demands always return above the average albums which I would not have the opportunity to know by my own resources.

This album is a perfect example that left me in a very delicate situation about 30 minutes ago when I was googling information about it. I found it available in one of the most consistent Brazilian music blogs, Quimsy’s Mumbo Jumbo, a permanent oasis created and maintained by Quimsy. I decided to transfer my plans to a new album at Loronix for tomorrow, but looking at Quimsy’s discography, I decided to make it and urge Loronix community to reach Quimsy by following this link or just clicking at the small fraction of six solid albums that you will not find at Loronix. I’m sure you will have a wonderful time at Quimsy’s, just like I had today. Let’s see.


This is Rildo Hora – A Vez e a Hora de Rildo Hora (1971), for RCA, featuring arrangements by Maestro Guerra Peixe, Chico de Moraes and Rildo Hora, which also delivers violao and harmonica playing. Maestro Severino Filho (Os Cariocas) is in charge of the choir. This is the first 1971 LP issue, with no personnel listing. Perhaps the CD reissue (with a slight different cover featuring Rildo Hora’s face on red color) brings additional information. The back cover brings nice testimonies of several important artists, such like Elizeth Cardoso, Maestro Guerra Peixe, Nonato Buzar, Luiz Gonzaga and others.

I would like to reproduce Quimsy’s review to this album, an awe-inspiring declaration of love for Brazilian music. Tracks include:

"If you find Brasilian choro and frevo a little too ethnic or hardcore for your tastes, may I suggest this small offering as a way in. Samba legend Rildo Hora constructs this perfectly realised album of styles that for me encapsulates the sound of Brazil. The sound may derive from homegrown and regional musical styles but in Rildo's hands we have something greater than the sum of its parts. Be sure, this album rocks.

Elza Soares - Elza Soares (1974)

Hello, good evening! In the very first beginning of Loronix, someone credited Elza Soares albums as the perfect and natural heal to depression and day saver when you woke up in the morning with no energy for a day. I’ve been hearing this one at least once a day in the last week and now I understand our friend’s analogy. This album has a very good energy and it is the first time we are making available at Loronix. Let’s see.

This is Elza Soares – Elza Soares (1974), for Tapecar, Elza’s first album at the tiny Tapecar label, the first after the termination of her contract with Odeon, her record company since the beginning where Elza could record 17 albums across the whole 60’s decade and part of the 70s. Musicians in this session were not credited by Tapecar, with the exception of Ed Lincoln, delivering truly awesome samba arrangements throughout the whole session. Tracks include:
