Sebastiao Tapajos - Sebastiao Tapajos e Sua Guitarra Cosmica (1968)

We are back with Jorge Mello’s contributions, which are amazing in quality and also in size. I did not reach nearly half of the albums made available by him. Thanks once again, Jorge. This record was one of the first I prepared, but decided not to publish, since it was released earlier by Quimsy in his great Quimsy Mumbo Jumbo. However, I realized today with a back cover reading that Maestro Mário Castro Neves delivers arrangements and I could not resist on making at Loronix. Let’s see.

This is Sebastiao Tapajos – Sebastiao Tapajos e Sua Guitarra Cosmica (1968), for Forma, the third Sebastiao Tapajos career LP, produced by Joao Mello and arranged by Maestro Mario Castro Neves. The album opens with The Door’s Light my Fire, but soon turns back to the safe Brazilian music terrain with compositions by Sebastião Tapajos, Rildo Hora, Jorge Ben, Nonato Buzar, Antonio Carlos Jobim and others. Mario Castro Neves delivers creative and unique arrangements, actually, orchestrations, changing everything we are used to hear on standards like Wave and Zazueira. Tracks include:

01 - Light My Fire (Morrison / Manzarek / Densmore / Krieger)
02 - Rio das Ostras (Silveira)
03 - A Estrela e o Astronauta (Rildo Hora / Mário Castro Neves)
04 - Call Me (T. Hatch)
05 - Luar Em Veropeso (Tito Madi)
06 - Eu Quase Sozinho (Sebastião Tapajós)
07 - Cantiga de Errante (Rildo Hora / Heitor Quintella)
08 - A 200 P/h (Sebastião Tapajós)
09 - Zazueira (Jorge Ben)
10 - Wave (Tom Jobim)
11 - Sinhazinha (Nonato Buzar / Paulinho Tapajós)
12 -La Mentira (Álvaro Carrillo)

Challenge | Who is she?

Hello, good evening! A friend has left us this fantastic picture, saying it would be very important if someone could identify who is the girl that appears in the background watching the Gonzaga family, which in the photo is Luiz Gonzaga, his wife Helena and his son Gonzaguinha.

Even if we cannot identify who is she, the picture is awesome and worth to be here.

Hope uEnjoy!

Paulo Moura Hepteto - Mensagem (1968)

I would like to say "Hello, good evening!", but I really can’t. Two renowned Brazilian artists left us in a range of 5 days, drags me to a very sad mood. And on top of several things this is a week of unexpected hard work. In the other hand, life has been really good to our community in the last days with Loronix appearing once again on ESPN Brasil (the video is coming soon) and also at a very important website from a journalist that loves the music from Brazil such like us, Luiz Nassif that keeps us informed about everything that happens in Brazil and also Brazilian music.

Additionally, the friends from Paulo Moura website left a message asking our help to find out albums that Paulo Moura is looking for. I’m making this album available to Loronixers and also to Paulo Moura, which is his first LP in the legendary label Equipe. Let’s see.

J.T. Meirelles

We lost today another very important Brazilian musician, J.T. Meirelles, leader of the anthological Meirelles e Os Copa 5 one of the first Samba Jazz groups from the 60’s.

J.T. Meirelles was a gifted saxophonist, flutist and arranger and this is Loronix tribute to one of the fathers of Samba Jazz, Meirelles first album with Os Copa 5, O Som, released in 1964 by Philips, featuring J.T. Meirelles (tenor sax, flute), Pedro Paulo (trumpet), Luiz Carlos Vinhas (piano), Manoel Gusmao (bass) and Dom Um Romao (drums).

I am very sad to report the passing of two important musicians in such a short space of time.

Jards Macale - Aprender a Nadar (1974)

I had lunch today in a place that always brings very good memories from my early days. It is a restaurant, better a small shop inside a mall at Largo do Machado in Rio de Janeiro. I could remember what happened when I was there for the last time; I had the chance to talk several minutes with an artist that we use to call as a “multimedia” artist here in Brazil, Wally Solomão, poet, composer, writer and music producer, among several other things. I arrived home decided to make this album available to our community, perfect timing for another great contribution from the mighty AdHoc, and perhaps the best album recorded by Jards Macale, which includes several Wally Salomão compositions, credited here as Wally Sailormoon. Walter Santos

Walter Santos, one of the main artists of the early Bossa Nova years died last Friday, May 30, in the city of Sao Paulo. He founded with Joao Gilberto the vocal group Os Enamorados do Ritmo at the end of the 40’s decade, being close with Joao Gilberto until the end of the 50’s in Rio de Janeiro.

Walter Santos recorded two albums and left many compositions, including several Bossa Nova and Brazilian popular music standards.

This is Loronix tribute to Walter Santos and his debut LP, recorded in 1963 with arrangements and organ by Walter Wanderley.

Nara Leao - Meu Primeiro Amor (1975)

Hello, good evening! There are confusing week and others that are dominated by stagnation and calm, and this one was really confusing. Additionally, it is raining in Rio de Janeiro and the weather starts getting cold. I came home with an idea in mind to listen this Nara Leao album, which is one that I never had the chance to hear before. A first and single listen is not enough to guarantee, but I think we have hear a very solid listen. Meu Primeiro Amor was recorded just before the acclaimed Bossa Nova album Dez Anos Depois, considered by many one of the best Nara Leao releases and both are completely different from each other. Let's see.

This is Nara Leao - Meu Primeiro Amor (1975), for Philips, featuring Nara Leao performing an unusual repertoire made of folklore and child songs, which is something that Nara Leao defines very well at Meu Primeiro Amor back cover, reproduced here and also available inside the music, great and sweet music that you cannot miss to start a very good weekend. Tracks include:

Sivuca & Guitars Unlimited - Let's Vamos (1987)

Hello, good evening! I’m very tired today. It was one of those hard days that started very early and finished in the middle of the night. In the other hand, I’m now with that feeling of duty accomplished with several small advances. Although tired, I cannot skip the music scheduled for today at Loronix, which is another nice contribution sponsored by Jorge Mello and one of a few albums he said it was a winner. Let’s see.

This is Sivuca & Guitars Unlimited – Let’s Vamos (1987), for RGE, a Sivuca international collaboration with the legendary guitar duo Guitars Unlimited from Sweeden, lead by Ulf Wakenius. This is one of those albums were everything was works fine, the combination of guitar and accordion is really exciting and the friends of Guitars Unlimited are truly awesome musicians. Peter Almqvist is the other member of Guitars Unlimited. The session also had the participation of Glorinha Gadelha, Luizao and Fernando Pereira, a small group and a GREAT sound. Tracks include:

Personnel

Al Newman e Seu Conjunto - Club dos 7 (1963)

Hello, good evening! It has been a while since only one daily album is being released at Loronix. This is not something planned in advance, but the result of the busy working days I’m facing over these days. I think our community is pleased with this new modus operandi. I have not received any negative feedback, and some friends wrote back saying that is better and easier to track Loronix daily.

However, there are important editorial issues to be resolved. One of those issues is the absence of some styles, especially the albums made for dancing, commonly known as "Para Dancar”. This post is to address wants and needs of “Para Dancar” admires and brings several characteristics of a “Para Dancar” album. Let’s see.

This is Al Newman e Seu Conjunto – Club dos 7 (1962), for SOM, which is a subsidiary of the legendary Copacabana label. You may have noticed, but that cover is made of fabric, the first in the style at Loronix, and as I said earlier, Club dos 7 is an authentic “Para Dancar” album, featuring the obscure Al Newman, probably a well-known musician acting with a fancy name. Al Newman and his Conjunto deliver a mixture of Brazilian and foreign songs, including and other “Para Dancar” rhythms, such like Merengue, Bolero, Calypso-Rock (?), Twist and Cha-Cha-Cha. I could not identify which instrument plays Al Newman and even who exactly is Al Newman, Mysteries that make the Club dos 7 a classical “Para Dancar” album. Tracks include:

01 - Ôba (Oswaldo Nunes)
02 - O Engraxate (Luis Antônio)
03 - Mi Amor (Mariah Brito / Mário Barcelos)
04 - Deixa Andar (Jujuba)
05 - Eu Já Fiz Tudo (Romeo Nunes / Almeida Serra)
06 - Ninguém Gostou Tanto de Alguém Como Eu Gosto de Ti (Waldir Machado)
07 - Crying (Roy Orbison / J. Melson)
08 - Runaround Sue (E. Maresca / Di Mucci)
09 - The Pepermint Twist (J. Dee / H. Glover)
10 - Las Secretarias (Pepe Luis)
11 - Quem Eu Quero Não Me Quer (Raul Sampaio / Ivo Santos)
12 - Fica Comigo Esta Noite (Adelino Moreira / Nelson Gonçalves)

Jorge Ben - A Tábua de Esmeralda (1974)

Hello, good evening! Everybody was right saying that A Tabua de Esmeralda is Jorge Bem’s Masterpiece. I confess that I heard this album for the first time today and I’m really impressed. I’m also impressed with everything I read today about this album and I decided to make something different showing a selection of these messages to our community, they explains A Tabua de Esmeralda better than I could make on my best days. Let’s see.

Amazon.com and Rate your Music statements.

To me, he is the single greatest musician songwriter in the world that ever was. His sound is utterly unique and majestic, rhythmic, soulfull, spiritual, poetic, perfect. Perfect. Nothing is perfect. Except his music. The only perfect thing in an imperfect universe. (musiclover, Amazon.com)

Beautiful. Breathtaking. Memorable. Highly creative. Just an absolutely wonderful album. (tommo, Rate Your Music)

This is one of the most beautiful Jorge Ben albums of all time. I can't believe it is almost 28 years old! I have yet to explain how some things in life can be just so perfect. (Crued, Amazon.com)

I'm new to Brazillian music that isn't by Sepultura, but from what I've heard so far, Jorge Ben is the definitive artist of the genre of samba. (Trashisawesome, Rate Your Music)

Simply, this CD transcend the frontiers of music. Perfect in musical content and in spiritual force, Tábua De Esmeralda is just a master piece! (Felipe Borelli Filho, Amazon.com)

This is perhaps the most organic album I've ever experienced, and among those select few records by which 'experience' is a more accurate verb than 'listen'. (londonrain, Rate Your Music)

Ben's best. A groovy masterpiece. (bborela, Rate Your Music)
