Wilson Simonal - A Nova Dimensao do Samba (1964)

Finally, things start to get better at my computational marathon, which makes me feel really glad and ready to give a positive message of Feliz Pascoa / Happy Easter to all Loronixers, family and friends. If you don't celebrate Easter, take also my positive vibrations and have a nice Sunday. My Easter present is an album from a very requested artist that needs to be shown more often, especially now when many new friends are coming for the first time to our community. Let's see.

This is Wilson Simonal - A Nova Dimensao do Samba (1964), for Odeon, the second career LP of Wilson Simonal, featuring arrangements of Lyrio Panicalli and Eumir Deodato. I would like very much to have time to take a careful listing on this album to make a solid review, but I could not make it. Once again, a Happy Easter and a nice Sunday. Tracks include:

Luperce Miranda - Interpreta Luperce Miranda (1978)

Hello, good evening! It is truly amazing that we can show important artists never made available before at Loronix after almost two years since we start this website. Brazilian music is really fascinating and seems to be endless. I remember several friends with fears of Loronix runs out of albums, in our fist year and I'm very happy with a new opportunity to introduce a new and important artist such like Luperce Miranda, a gifted bandolim player. Let's see.

Agostinho dos Santos - Agostinho dos Santos (1956)

Hello, good evening! I think tomorrow night we can rely again with the server that run the external Loronix applications. The temporary server is doing a great job and nobody is having a bad experience as I thought we would have. Unfortunately, all videos already available are down since Tuesday. In the other hand, this outage is really bad from my perspective; I would like very much to afford a dedicated hosting instead of sharing the same space with others.

Anyway, this is a boring subject and we are here to talk about MUSIC, which is the great fun of Loronix. I want to start today with the debut LP of a gifted singer, which could have build a fantastic career if he had not left us so early, I speak of Agostinho dos Santos. Let's see.

This is Agostinho dos Santos - Agostinho dos Santos (1956), for Polydor, featuring arrangements and conduction by Maestro Simonetti. This is a very old album with Agostinho dos Santos performing a repertoire of Brazilian tunes and Brazilian versions of American songs. It is a very curious 10-inch with lush orchestrations by Maestro Simonetti. The back cover features lots of information about Agostinho dos Santos on a very nice text written by a not credited author. Tracks include:

01 - Falam Meus Olhos (Fernando Cesar / Nazareno de Brito)
02 - O Vendedor de Laranjas (Betinho / Heitor Carilo)
03 - A Ultima Vez que Vi Paris - The Last Time I Saw Paris (Jerome Kern / Haroldo Barbosa)
04 - Nao Digo (Sebastiao Gilberto / Antonio Bruno)
05 - Meu Benzinho - My Little One (Howe / Gussin / Cauby de Brito)
06 - Pif Paf (Portinho / Falcao)
07 - E Tao Gostoso Amar - Open the Window of Your Heart (Hoffmann / Manning / Edson Borges)
08 - Cancao do Mar (Frederico Brito / Ferrer Trindade)

Chico Buarque de Hollanda - Compacto Duplo (1967)

I think this is another great finding sponsored by my mother, who brought this compacto duplo (EP) in her last contribution to our community. I could not find this little record listed in any discography checked and I believe he brings something never released on regular Chico Buarque albums, which is the recording of of Roda Viva, featuring the vocal group MPB-4 in the III Festival da Musica Popular Brasileira in 1967. My memory has not been very good recently, but I remember someone asking for this tune. Let's see.

This is Chico Buarque de Hollanda - Compacto Duplo (1967), for RGE, featuring the participation of MPB-4 at Roda Viva in III Festival da Musica Popular Brasileira and Carolina, taken from the II Festival Internacional da Cancao, Rio de Janeiro. This cover artwork alone worth the admission of this nice album. I would like to say thanks to everybody and give my apologies for the recent outages at Loronix, my work on these issues are not finished and probably we will have a better and fast website as soon as the situation gets back to normal. Tracks include:

01 - Roda Viva (Chico Buarque) with MPB-4 at III Festival da Musica Popular Brasileira
02 - A Televisao (Chico Buarque)
03 - Carolina (Chico Buarque) at II Festival Internacional da Cancao
04 - Um Chorinho (Chico Buarque)

Cauby Peixoto - Os Grandes Sucessos de Cauby Peixoto (1969)

Today is the ideal day for some musical experiences at Loronix. If I have the nerve needed, everybody will be surprised with the last post I want to make today. Anyway, I would like to say this post is not part of any experiment. Cauby Peixoto is an important artist that released many albums across decades, more than 400 albums released in every format. If we are here to write the story of Brazilian music, this story will be incomplete without mentioning Cauby Peixoto. Let's see.

This is Cauby Peixoto - Os Grandes Sucessos de Cauby Peixoto (1969), for RCA Candem, featuring a repertoire of early Cauby Peixoto recordings taken from the late 50's to the early 60's 78 RPMs, a good starting point if you want to get along with the beginning of Cauby Peixoto career. Tracks include:

01 - Ninguem e de Ninguem (1960) (Umberto Silva / Daltor Gomes / Luiz Mergulhao)
02 - Garotas de Portugal (1957) (Durso / Mitchell / Kann / Gniaroni)

04 - Nono Mandamento (1957) (Rene Bittencourt / Raul Sampaio)

Elis Regina - Elis (1972)

Hello, good evening! I have several EPs to release today, such like those very good Singles and EP Festivals we made last year, but I can't decide which one to be the first. Better start releasing an artist that everybody loves, Elis Regina and her first release at Loronix this year.

This is Elis Regina - Elis (1972), for Philips, an EP or compacto duplo, as we call in Brazil. Elis Regina performs great songs, including Aguas de Marco (Antonio Carlos Jobim). This little record is produced by Roberto Menescal, arranged by Cesar Camargo Mariano and does not bring credits for musicians in this session. Tracks include:

01 - Aguas de Marco (Antonio Carlos Jobim)
02 - Atras da Porta (Chico Buarque / Francis Hime)
03 - Bala com Bala (Joao Bosco / Aldir Blanc)
04 - Vida de Bailarina (Americo Seixas / Dorival Silva)

Toqunho e Vinicius de Moraes - Toquinho & Vinicius (1977)

Hello, good morning! I knew since the first minute of today that my energies were limited to make only one new album to Loronixers. So I decided to make something that should make everybody really pleased. It has been a really long time since the last post featuring Toquinho and Vinicius de Moraes together and I think I could not make better than this one, which is a compilation with 46 minutes running time with a very well selected repertoire. Let's see.

This is Toquinho e Vinicius de Moraes - Toquinho & Vinicius (1977), for RGE, part of RGE label celebration of its 20th Anniversary. I wish everybody a nice weekend, actually, a big weekend that starts tomorrow for Brazilian friends and perhaps friends from other countries, anyway, have a nice big weekend or have a nice weekend, in advance. Tracks include:

01 - São Demais os Perigos Desta Vida (Vinicius de Moraes / Toquinho)
02 - A Tonga da Mironga do Kabuletê (Vinicius de Moraes / Toquinho)

Moacyr Silva e Seu Conjunto - Sax Sensacional! Nr. 2 (1961)

It is good to be back showing albums after a full day without new releases and much work to make our resources available on the temporary server. Actually, this post is a kind of personal catharsis after a day of many difficulties. Moacyr Silva is one of my favorite artists, and this album was one of the first I prepared for Loronix using my limited vinyl transfer resources at that time. This upgrade includes improvements on several aspects, from cover scans with removed scratches, a better transfer and the corrupted track 08 now fixed. Let's see.

This is Moacyr Silva e Seu Conjunto - Sax Sensacional! Nr. 2 (1961), for Copacabana, with the acclaimed Moacyr Silva backed by Conjunto featuring the gifted pianist Chaim Lewak, Paulinho Baterista, Jorge Marinho, Geraldo and Rubens Bassini. Moacyr Silva delivers a repertoire blending Brazilian and American standards on the second Sax Sensacional! album from a series of 5 released by Copacabana, some of them are already available at Loronix and you can use Loronix Find It to check them out. Tracks include:

Challenge | Who are they?

Hello, good evening! Better start today with a challenge sent by a very good friend of mine showing a constellation of Brazilian musicians performing on a Jam Session in Copacabana in the year of 1955. Your mission is to identify who are the six musicians and also the last one, only having fun with the trombone, but an important character to Brazilian music in the 50's. In spite of being well known musicians for Loronixers, this is a very difficult challenge.

Hope uEnjoy!

I'm using this space just to let you know about the latest availability issues of Loronix complimentary applications and services. All my sites are down in the last 24 hours, which includes the ones that support Loronix and my customers’ websites and databases. I don't have estimates of when they will be set to go again. In order to get things back at Loronix, I made a painful migration to a new server to restore some key applications to our community, they are: Loronix Find It, the new super deluxe impressive image covers and translation services.

In the other hand, Loronix Preview Center is no longer available; the migration is complex and involves major configuration changes and large amount of data to be transferred to the temporary server. Not affected or little affected by the downtime are downloads, CBox, blogrolling, Loronix Community Search, etc.

My apologies for this unplanned outage, I'm considering moving to a new hosting system that I can afford with the features I have on the current one, which is already contracted until December 31 2008.

Respect, zeca

Jacob do Bandolim - Isto e Nosso (1968)

I get happy and proud when someone says that Loronix provides the opportunity to get along with new artists, otherwise impossible to be discovered using the traditional channels available to reach Brazilian music. This is very special and I am sure that each of us had some level and some moment of "discovery" at Loronix. I had several, even with artists that I already knew, since their albums are no longer available commercially.

My great discovery at Loronix was the legendary tenor sax Moacyr Silva, a very important artist that does not have a single career album available commercially. Another example is Jacob do Bandolim, considered by many the best Brazilian bandolim player ever and one of the greatest Brazilian musicians of all time. Let's see.

This is Jacob do Bandolim - Isto e Nosso (1968), for RCA Camdem, featuring remastered Jacob do Bandolim recordings taken from 78 RPMs released in the 50's. Jacob has the accompaniment of several renowned musicians, such like Dino 7 Cordas, Canhoto, Meira and a special group assembled on track 11 - Magoas, featuring Lindolpho Gaya, Zaccarias, Wilson, Paulo Moura, Moacyr Silva, Sandoval, Orfeu, Fats Elpidio, Dino, Bill, Barao, Jorge Silva and Silvio, available at Loronix Preview Center for your convenience. Thanks a million to JOAO-SP for making another nice album available to our community. Tracks include personnel listing this time.

Irany Pinto - Irany Toca Blues em Surdina (1960)

Hello, good evening! Here we go on another album discovered in the last raining days in Rio de Janeiro. I have to admit this one was excluded for lack of attention. Irany Pinto was renowned violinist with a recording career that spans decades, including a sequel recorded for Odeon with 12 albums titled Boleros em Surdina, being the first released in 1957 and the last in 1969 as Boleros em Surdina Nr. 12, which is also the last Irany Pinto Career LP. Let's see.

This is Irany Pinto - Irany Toca Blues em Surdina (1960), for Odeon, perhaps a variation of the Boleros sequel with Irany Pinto performing a repertoire based on American standards by Cole Porter, Irving Berlin, George Gershwin and others. Irany Toca Blues em Surdina features arrangements by Maestro Oswaldo Borba conduced by Maestro Orlando Silveira with everything under direction of the renowned Aloysio de Oliveira. Unfortunately, Odeon did not credit musicians in this session. Tracks include:

01 - Smoke Gets In Your Eyes (Kern / Harbach)
02 - Love Is a Many Splendored Thing (S. Fain / Paul Francis Webster)
03 - A Pretty Girl Is Like a Melody (Irving Berlin)
04 - Solitude (Duke Ellington / Ellis)
05 - Blue Moon (R. Rodgers / L. Hart)
06 - Blue Skies (Irving Berlin)
07 - The Man I Love (George Gershwin / Ira Gershwin)
08 - Body And Soul (Heyman / Sour / Green)
09 - Stella By Starlight (V. Young / N. Washington)
10 - Stardust (H. Carmichael / Parish)
11 - Stormy Neather (Harold Arlen / T. Koehler)
12 - My Melancholy Baby (N. Burnett / M. Belle / Watson)

Marilia Medalha - Boias de Luz (1978)

This album is dedicated to our great friend Trix completing the advanced age of 21 this weekend. Trix has a deep knowledge of whatever you think about Brazilian music, no matter the decade or style and what amazes me most he has only 21. We need to ask him when he started his interest on music, quite a phenomenon. Trix also had a website, which is unfortunately no longer updated. This album was the last made available by Trix on his really nice TrixVinylRips. Let's see.

This is Marilia Medalha - Boias de Luz (1978), for Continental, according with Trix, an outstanding album. I'm taking Trix review with English translation as Loronix homage to Trix and also an incentive to make him come back again with his website. Tracks include:

In 1978, Marilia Medalha launched Boias de Luz at Continental Label with arrangements by Dory Caymmi and Gonzaguinha. This album went unnoticed at that time, but is truly a masterpiece. Marilia Medalha became a famous singer with Festivais da Cancao performances with Edu Lobo and Momento 4uatro. Marilia never was an active performer, releasing only a couple of albums. In Boias de Luz, Marilia starts with a killing opening track 01 - Nos, Os Grandes Artistas (Luiz Gonzaga Jr.), delivering nice interpretations of Sambas from Ze Ketti, Abel Silva, Sueli Costa and others across this session. With no recording activity since 1992, Marilia Medalha has a great importance on Brazilian popular Music. We want her back! Thanks Trix!

Paulinho Nogueira - Sambas de Ontem e Hoje (1961)

Hello, good evening! I can't remember a rain such like we are receiving in Rio de Janeiro. It is a non-stopping rain that lasts three or four days. The beach gets empty and people stay in their places, which was my option yesterday, when I took a time to hear some albums to take them in consideration at Loronix. This one is an outcome of this evaluation. Let's see.

This is Paulinho Nogueira - Sambas de Ontem e Hoje (1961), for RGE, the third Paulinho Nogueira solo LP, backed by Conjunto RGE with no credits to arranger and musician. This cover, with the message "Music for Tourists" cheats me, I always considered this album some sort of Para Dancar release, but Paulinho Nogueira delivers again a really nice album with very good guitar playing on top of a nice repertoire of Sambas and Bossa Nova cuts. Loronix Preview Center (now with a new skin) features track 01 - Barquinho (Roberto Menescal / Ronaldo Boscoli). Tracks include:

01 - Barquinho (Roberto Menescal / Ronaldo Bôscoli)
02 - Só Vou de Mulher (Haroldo Barbosa / Luis Reis)

Johnny Alf - O Que e Amar (1988)

Hello, good evening! If you consider that Elizeth Cardoso - Cancao do Amor Demais (1958) landmarks the birth of Bossa Nova, this is the year where Bossa Nova celebrates its 50th anniversary. Cancao do Amor Demais features for the first time Joao Gilberto's violao beat on tracks Chega de Saudade and Outra Vez. I have been very busy this year and my perception is that we do not have so far a consistent activity devoted to this great event. Additionally, I can't remember any album released to celebrate Bossa Nova 50 years. That's why I'm making available this album, a very well done compilation celebrating Bossa Nova 30 years, featuring one of its main characters, Johnny Alf. Let's see.

This is Johnny Alf - O Que e Amar (1988), for RCA. Finally, Johnny Alf is back to Loronix. His last solo album was made available in June 2007, it is a long time and it is important that everybody knows Johnny Alf, a true genius and unbelievable underestimated. He was the one that introduced to many other renowned artists a new way of singing, playing and performing several years before the birth of Bossa Nova. It is time to celebrate Bossa Nova and celebrate Johnny Alf. Tracks include:

01 - Rapaz de Bem (Johnny Alf)
02 - Ilusão à Toa (Johnny Alf)
03 - Céu e Mar (Johnny Alf)
04 - Penso Em Você (Fernando Lobo / Paulo Soledade)
05 - Bondinho Pão de Açúcar (Armando Cavalcante / Victor Freire)
06 - Podem Falar (Johnny Alf)
07 - Eu e a Brisa (Johnny Alf)
08 - O Que É Amar (Johnny Alf)
09 - Seu Chopin Desculpe (Johnny Alf)
10 - Escuta (Johnny Alf)
11 - Fim de Semana Em Eldorado (Johnny Alf)
12 - Disa (Johnny Alf / Mauricio Einhorn)

Moreira da Silva - O Ultimo Malandro (1959)

With no previous announcement, Loronix started on Monday a new method of displaying album covers, larger and deluxe versions with better quality. I believe that after 5 days, with no problem diagnosed or reported by friends, I will make this new method as official. I'm having a lot of fun with this new style; it loads faster, reducing the time needed to load Loronix completely. In the other hand, I'm frustrated for not having time to adjust all previous covers available.

I want to celebrate this new feature showing one of the most beautiful covers that I had a chance to see, featuring a true legend of a very old Samba style, known as Samba, Breque. Let's see.

This is Moreira da Silva - O Ultimo Malandro (1959), for Odeon, featuring a blend Moreira da Silva hits taken from 78 RPM and unpublished tunes, released for the first time here. This is a very enjoyable album with Moreira da Silva at his peak. Now it's time to sleep, I hope everyone has a productive tomorrow and a great weekend, full of solid Brazilian listens. Tracks include:

01 - Que Barbada (Valdrido Silva / Moreira da Silva / Jucata)
02 - Amigo Urso (Henrique Gonçalez)
03 - Vara Criminal (Moreira da Silva / Ribeiro Cunha)
04 - Olha o Padilha (Ferreira Gomes / Bruno Gomes / Moreira da Silva)
05 - Dormi no Molhado (Moreira da Silva)
06 - Dona História Com Licença (Moreira da Silva)
07 - Jogando Com o Capeta (Moreira da Silva / Ribeiro Cunha)
08 - Acertei no Milhar (Wilson Batista / Geraldo Pereira)
09 - Na Subida do Morro (Moreira da Silva / Ribeiro Cunha)
10 - Averiguações (Wilson Batista)
11 - Esta Noite Eu Tive Um Sonho (Moreira da Silva)
12 - Chang-lang (Moreira da Silva / Ribeiro Cunha)

V Festival Internacional da Cancao Vol. 2 (1970)

I have been wondering why Loronix does not have a representative number of recordings from the legendaries Festivais da Cancao, a fever in Brazilian music by the end of the 60's decade. I have some assumptions, in spite of its importance, perhaps they are not popular among our community or I failed on making the choices in the few albums already available. Perhaps the root cause is my total ignorance about the period, anyway, I'm trying to fix this approach with a new album, which seems quite appropriate considering the performers and repertoire. Let's see.

This is V Festival Internacional da Cancao Vol. 2 (1970), for Odeon. First of all, as an international festival, why this album does not feature international performers? Additionally, why the albums in the style do not bring information about the winners and prizes? Better show this one and open the discussion. Do not miss the music videos featuring Geraldo Vandre performing with Trio Maraya and Quarteto Novo on some Festival da Cancao edition. It is very curious to see a very young Hermeto Pascoal and all Quarteto Novo members. Loronix Preview Center features 07 - Feira Moderna, performed by Som Imaginario. Tracks include:

Sergio Endrigo - Exclusivamente Brasil (1979)

Hello, good evening! This is the first in a series of contributions made by a new friend of our community, Gabriele, a sincere Brazilian music lover and also an expert on computers, he taught me to transfer files using a technology that I did not know, very good indeed. It is not necessary to say that Gabriele lives in Italy and his contributions make the connection between Brazilian and Italian music, such this first, featuring a Sergio Endrigo album recorded in Brazil with Brazilian musicians, special guests and tunes. Let's see.

This is Sergio Endrigo - Exclusivamente Brasil (1979), for Philips, with the special guests Vinicius de Moraes, Toquinho, Fafa de Belem and Chico Buarque de Hollanda. The session was held in Rio de Janeiro and Philips did not credited musicians, Pena Froes, Perinho Albuquerque and Luiz Roberto from Os Cariocas are in charge of arrangements. Gabriele delivers lossless audio with high-quality cover scans of front and back cover. Bravo! Tracks include:

01 - Samba Para Endrigo (Toquinho / Vinicius de Moraes) with Toquinho e Vinicius

Joao Bosco - Tiro de Misericordia (1977)

I cannot remember if this is the first contribution made by the powerful AdHoc with music transferred from vinyl, instead of CD. There is a huge technical difference between both transfers, everything is simple with a CD, the audio is transferred by a digital process, no noise, and the covers are small and easy to transfer in any scanner. In the other hand, vinyl transfers are different and complex; you should play the whole album while transferring and later use noise reduction software, having in mind the balance between improving against loosing sound quality. I got tired only defining the audio transfer, but the cover is also a pain, it is necessary to scan and stitch four parts of the cover to make a single one.

All to say and thank AdHoc for this amazing and professional vinyl transfer that seems to be from a CD, but was transferred from vinyl, since inexplicably, Tiro de Misericordia never had a chance to be released on CD. Let's see.

This is Joao Bosco - Tiro de Misericordia (1977), for RCA, the fourth Joao Bosco career album, preceded by the excellent Galos de Briga, Caca a Raposa e Joao Bosco self-titled debut album, released in 1973. Tiro de Misericordia (Mercy Shot) brings compositions of Joao Bosco with Aldir Blanc, a frequent collaborator at the start of Joao Bosco career and Cristina Buarque - again! - singing on track 06 - Vaso Ruim Nao Quebra. Loronix Preview Center features 09 - Bijuterias, a delicious tune and one of the great Joao Bosco hits. Tracks include:

Challenge | Who are they?

A very easy Challenge to make friends busy while the last post of the day is being prepared. We need only to identify the four artists shown in the photo, optionally, the fifth, with the face covered. I have my guess about the fifth element, but I prefer to hear what should come out from friends.

Hope uEnjoy!
