Hello, good evening! Wilson Simonal is among the most popular singers among Loronix's friends, mainly the friends outside Brazil. From my perspective, Wilson Simonal music is among the ones that I had more pleasure to make available here. Max de Castro, and the whole Simonal family is always involved with Loronix, which is something that makes me feel really proud. Since the beginning, Loronix has been delivering Wilson Simonal from his early years at Odeon, which includes the whole 1960's and the very first beginning of the 1970's. Now it is time to get along with Wilson Simonal from the 1970's, and we will make it together, I made my first hearing while transferring today. Let's see.

This is Wilson Simonal - Ninguem Proibe o Amor (1975), for RCA Victor. It is not necessary to say we have a fantastic cover artwork here, including the back cover with Wilson Simonal on an empty stadium. Wilson Simonal - Joia, Joia (1971)

This is the Wilson Simonal album that we should listen with attention, Joia, Joia landmarks the start of a major change on Wilson Simonal discography. With Joia, Joia, Wilson Simonal definitively leaves the 60's bossa nova and pilantragem accent towards a more 70's funk and soul approach. Unfortunately, those still controversial political affairs emerged just before Joia, Joia release and Wilson Simonal could not keep the pace of his career in the forthcoming years.

Wilson Simonal - Vou Deixar Cair (1966) with Som 3

Caetano left Sao Paulo today for a short business trip and made a phone call to remind me of Wilson Simonal passing, seven years ago, June 26, 2000. I know we had the great Joia, Joia less than a week, but this album is so great that I could not resist showing Loronixers. Just after post closing, I'm announcing in Portuguese the invitation I received from Max de Castro to be his guest on a concert tomorrow, part of a series of concerts celebrating 40 years of Canecao nightclub in Rio de Janeiro. Thanks Max, I'm honored, Loronix is all about the Brazilian musicians and the respect and promotion of their art is the strongest Loronix value proposition.

This cover artwork alone worth your attention as well the music, Wilson Simonal is at his peak and backed by the mighty Som 3, the legendary instrumental combo lead by Cesar Camargo Mariano and complemented by the sax tenor of Juarez Araujo and Maurilio da Silva Santos trumpet. Wilson Simonal - Tem Algo Mais (1963)

I'm confident someone finds Altamiro Carrilho e Sua Flauta Azul 10-inch as described bellow. It will fantastic to have this album back to Altamiro and Jornal Musical and also a great accomplish to our community. Anyway, once again I do not have arguments to explain why the debut LP of this so adored artist was not released before. This is a great album, different from the later works of Wilson Simonal and you will have a high quality entertainment with it.

This is Wilson Simonal - Tem Algo Mais (1963), for Odeon, Wilson Simonal debut LP, featuring orchestral arrangements by Maestro Lyrio Panicalli. Do not think you will get a groovy samba flavored Wilson Simonal on his debut, this is a nice Bossa Nova album with Wilson Simonal singing smooth, supported by Maestro Lyrio Panicalli. Definitively, the early 60's was the peak years for Brazilian male singers; several nice works are from this period, such like the early works of Pery Ribeiro and others. Tracks include:

Last week, Jörn, a great Loronixer, very friend of us, went to a small one-week vacation. zecalouro got surprised when Jörn said that he would not cope without Loronix for a week. Thanks Jörn, you made my week.

But Jörn is that kind of friend that never gets tired and came back from vacation with a gift to zecalouro and all Loronixers.

Wilson Simonal - S'imbora (1965)

My approach to the whole discography of this great artist is unique. I use to listen to his music several times before showing to Loronixers. Perhaps it is the need of saying something new every time or the responsibility to show a new album by one of the top five most popular artists at Loronix. Everybody likes Wilson Simonal. I spoke this week with the Green Eyed Lady and for my surprise; the Jazzy Lady is also a big fan of this great artist.

This post is dedicated to Max de Castro and Wilson Simoninha, Loronixers since the very first beginning and one of the most open and friendly artists I had the chance to know with Loronix. You are the guys!

This is Wilson Simonal - S'imbora (1965), for Odeon. S'imbora is the fourth Wilson Simonal career album. The repertoire selection is a must with a nice selection of Bossa Nova standards. I heard somewhere that I use to say "one of the best of" on every post. This is not the truth. I'm a fan of statistics and I guarantee that it is not every time. So let's make it different, this album is being reposted because it is probably the best Wilson Simonal LP and the previous version was far away from what I consider an acceptable copy.

This is Wilson Simonal - Alegria, Alegria!!! (1967), for Odeon, really nice album with a bellow the average cover artwork according with Wilson Simonal standards, so I'm showing an alternative one, the same album issued in Peru as Pais Tropical by IEMPSA, which is probably an Odeon subsidiary. The original cover is available as a thumbnail in the left and also inside the music on high resolution. Special Repost | Wilson Simonal & Som Tres - Mexico 70 (1970)

Remember a few weeks ago when zecalouro presented a fine and rare relase from Wilson Simonal that he could not wait longer waiting for the cover? It is time to make this special repost, as we now have the original cover available.

Pay attention please, this is more than any given original cover, it was sent to zecalouro by Max de Castro. Loronixers who live outside Brazil, just a tip, Max de Castro is Wilson Simonal son. Great Max!

It is wonderful to know that Max de Castro is an active Loronixer. Max is a Brazilian singer, arranger and producer acclaimed by renowned figures such like Nelson Motta, Ed Motta, Jorge Ben Jor and many others. Max started his career in 1992 joining the band Confraria, formed by the brothers Pedro Camargo Mariano and Joao Marcelo Mariano.

Max released his first CD in 1999, Samba Raro, receiving several enthusiastic reviews. Wilson Simonal - Alegria Alegria, Volume 2 or Quem Nao Tem Swing Morre com a Boca Cheia de Formiga (1968)

Everybody is crying for Wilson Simonal. So, here it is. Wilson Simonal - Alegria, Alegria - Volume 2 is the second out of three releses for Odeon. Also called Quem Nao Tem Swing Morre com a Boca Cheia de Formiga, this is not considered one of his greatest releases, Simonal soul is a little diminished in comparison with previous releases, since Odeon was willing to capitalize on his growing success by molding him into a more conventional pop singer.

This is the first Loronix Simonal release, there is more to come. zecalouro also wants to tell a little bit more about Simonal bio and the urban legend of his connections with the political mainstream of the 70's, which collapsed his career before givin Simonal the chance to be internationally famous.

Wilson Simonal - A Nova Dimensao do Samba (1964)

Finally, things start to get better at my computational marathon, which makes me feel really glad and ready to give a positive message of Feliz Pascoa / Happy Easter to all Loronixers, family and friends. If you don't celebrate Easter, take also my positive vibrations and have a nice Sunday. My Easter present is an album from a very requested artist that needs to be shown more often, especially now when many new friends are coming for the first time to our community. Let's see.

This is Isso e o Drink (1960), for Remon. Sometimes taken by mistake as a Celso Murilo LP, this obscure album probably features the cast of the legendary Drink nightclub in Rio de Janeiro with Wilson Simonal, Lila, Luis Bandeira, Sandra and Celso Murilo that plays his organ in all tracks with the accompaniement of Conjunto Drink, which is Américo Cerqueira, Paulinho, Sebastiao de Barros, Fernando Alves, Francisco Neto "Ceara" and Julio da Silva. Wilson Simonal - Singles, Lados B e Raridades (2004)

Perfect time to show Loronixers something that made me feel very a couple of days ago. The feedback of those singles and EPs packs had been really great and zecalouro decided to make a special pack only with Wilson Simonal albums, in spite of the bad quality of some songs that were taken from pretty old singles, EPs and even 78 RPMs.

Without knowing my plans, Max de Castro sent this gift to Loronixers, a double CD with 41 remastered songs taken from the out of print Wilson Simonal box set released in 2004, Wilson Simonal - Singles, Lados B e Raridades (2004). Thanks again Max for the sharing spirit.

I'm not sure that everybody will remember when I introduced Loronixers to a series of albums dedicated to Brazilian artists with Chico Buarque edition on Historia da Musica Popular Brasileira - Serie Grandes Compositores. You can check Chico Buarque album here.

Now it is time to get along with another series, which is my favorite, Historia da Musica Popular Brasileira, easily identified by this back cover. This series was released from 1970 to 1971 and it is very easy to find on old vinyl shops in Rio. Each edition comes with biography, beautiful color photos and something that is really great an LP in the 10-inch format featuring a compilation.

This is Billy Blanco - Historia da Musica Popular Brasileira Nr. 32 (1971), for Abril Cultural, featuring eight Billy Blanco compositions, performed by Lucio Alves, Isaura Garcia, Jorge Veiga, Doris Monteiro, Maysa, Jamelao, Wilson Simonal and Billy Banco. I think Billy Blanco choice is correct; he is a very important Bossa Nova artist with less than a few albums available at Loronix. Tracks include:

Bossa Nova nas Gerais | Brazil 3

I will not hide my sympathy for the great State of Minas Gerais, my second State in Brazil. When I was a kid, I use to spend three months in Minas Gerais every year on a city located on south called Sao Lourenco. Minas Gerais is all about nature, bike ridings at the mountains and also birds. I have some of my birds there, they had to go away for living a better life and bring peace to my neighbors, they were about to expel me a couple of years ago.

Minas Gerais is a very special place; it was there that gold was first found in Brazil, spawning a rich culture during the Baroque period -- with the churches, status and classical music all around. It was there that many Portuguese noblemen came to live and make money, bringing along the tradition of European instruments and styles -- especially the music of bards and serenaders.

But Minas Gerais put a spin on it, as they do with everything is easy to sense and feel the style: never aggressive, very melodic, subtle, full of surprising harmonies to be played and sung carefully. It is well known in Brazil that people from Minas Gerais are expert at conversations that can last for hours. The same applies to their music: it feels like good conversation, acoustic guitar at hand, or the local form of the Spanish / Moorish with several different tunings, weaving sound around beautiful lyrics.

Zeca do Trombone & Roberto Sax - Zeca do Trombone & Roberto Sax (1976)

Hello! Good Night! There are many trombone players and trombone fans at Loronix and zecalouro has been learning together how to appreciate the art of trombone playing. We had amazing LPs in the last weeks from Raul de Barros and several ones with arrangements of Nelsinho.

Mr. G. provided this LP, considered a masterpiece, the legendary Zeca do Trombone & Roberto Sax - Zeca do Trombone & Roberto Sax (1976), for Pirata, Zeca do Trombone, not to be confused with zecalouro, is an experienced trombonist from Rio de Janeiro and Roberto Sax, according with Mr. G., is in fact Roberto Simonal, Wilson Simonal brother. Now to the Power of Now also says wonders about this record on his blog review as a five star album and he is not being exaggerated.

V Festival Internacional da Cancao Vol. 2 (1970)

I have been wondering why Loronix does not have a representative number of recordings from the legendaries Festivais da Cancao, a fever in Brazilian music by the end of the 60's decade. I have some assumptions, in spite of its importance, perhaps they are not popular among our community or I failed on making the choices in the few albums already available. Perhaps the root cause is my total ignorance about the period, anyway, I'm trying to fix this approach with a new album, which seems quite appropriate considering the performers and repertoire. Let's see.

This is V Festival Internacional da Cancao Vol. 2 (1970), for Odeon. First of all, as an international festival, why this album does not feature international performers? Additionally, why the albums in the style do not bring information about the winners and prizes? Better show this one and open the discussion. Do not miss the music videos featuring Geraldo Vandre performing with Trio Maraya and Quarteto Novo on some Festival da Cancao edition. Mario Castro Neves & Messias - The Wonderful Latin American Sound of Brazil (1967)

Let's start the day with an album that features two great musicians and it is all about party with nice female vocals and scats.

This is Mario Castro Neves & Messias - The Wonderful Latin American Sound of Brazil (1967), for RCA Victor. What you read is what you get, this is an album by the brother of the Legendary Oscar Castro Neves, Mario Castro Neves and the Brazilian guitar player Messias, a musician that people cannot stop talking about since Caetano sent us his tribute album to Antonio Carlos Jobim. This is not instrumental music, but a collection of Bossa Nova tunes backed up by a nice piano, bass, drums and guitar group and lyrics sung by girls. Tracks include:

Dario Lopes - Guitarra em Nova Dimensao (1968)

Hello, good evening! I'm really proud to make available this album, the debut LP of a special musician that I had the chance to meet for the fist time today by a phone call. This is Dario Lopes, maestro, arranger, producer, guitarist, being also an important artist at TV Globo for more than thirty years as musician, composer and producer in charge of several TV Shows, such like: Roberto Carlos Especial, Fantastico, Chico Anysio Show, Os Trapalhoes, Video Show among many others. It is really nice when we have the chance to meet such important artist before showing one of his albums.

I would like to mention the great help given by Marcia Calmon and Tranka, which is the bassist of this album, by kindly sending Dario Lopes contact information. I will be with Dario tomorrow at his place, he lives close to me at Leme, Rio de Janeiro and my copy of Guitarra em Nova Dimensao will be my Christmas gift to our new friend Dario Lopes.
