Carlos Lyra - Sarava (1969)

This is another out of print album, Carlos Lyra - Sarava (1969). Carlos Lyra is one of the most important artists of the Bossa Nova and also an intellectual behind the movement, forging new directions like the protest song. Lyra wrote some of the best moments of the Bossa Nova on his own or together with partners like Vinícius de Moraes.

He founded with Roberto Menescal a guitar academy that became a meeting point for future artists like Edu Lobo, Marcos Valle, Nara Leão, and Ronaldo Bôscoli.

Sarava was recorded in Mexico, when Lyra and other Brazilian artists were in cultural exile. This album is a nice and classic Bossa Nova piece. There is a term that zecalouro does not like but it is the best description for this record, "easy-listening".

Hi Zecalouro!

Only a question. What is exactly the meaning of "saravá"? When Brazilian people say it, it sounds like a "Hello!" or "What's up!", or in Spanish "Cómo va eso?"

Thanks for the upload!

After dowloading it, I saw the titles of the songs are in Spanish (at least, 10 of the 11 songs). I was a bit surprised but I read your comments "Sarava was recorded in Mexico ..." and I realized why ...

Zamurozen,

Yes! The record was made in MX, that's why some tracks are titled using Spanish.

BTW.: Sarava is a phrase used by members of the Candomblé religion (an African religion which was taken to Brazil by African slaves) which means "good luck".

But nobody says Sarava in Brazil. Actually, zecalouro never said that in his life.

Bye Bye Zamurozen

Thanks Zecalouro for your explanations. Maybe I thought that "Saravá" was commoner in Brazil because I heard this word in some other Brazilian songs, before this one recorded by Carlos Lyra.
In any case, for a Spanish speaker like me, the word sounds really nice.

Esqueci, depois eu me lembro.
Esse disco é emocionante. Melhor do que esse BrasilXAustrália - 2 a 0. Ainda bem que acabou.

Saravah is also the name of a very good record label in France back in the 1960s and 70s

According description the classifiacation of this (fantastic) bossa album is "easy-listening".

Well in fact was the "easy-listening" music that made Brazilian music popular through the World.

In a Chicago Hotel i was "forced" to listen during the breakfast 7 or 8 days long! Garata the Ipanema brings you in the 22 flor of a Tokyo Restaurant or/and sounds on allmost of the supermarket in Europe.

I hate to say but our fantastic bossa is a "easy to listen music" with the only think that brazilians "feel" it.

Thanks for it!!
