Hermeto Pascoal - Slaves Mass (1977)

This is a Hermeto Pascoal 1974 LP, Slaves Mass, considered a milestone on instrumental music and Jazz scene, although it is not a strictly Jazz album. On seven tracks, Hermeto plays everything, from flutes, sax, guitar, Fender piano, clavinet and weird inventions, such like: fans, bottles, tea pot, etc.

Hermeto is now in Brazil. He made a move from Rio de Janeiro to Curitiba, just to stay closer to his new young wife that is also a musician. They are playing and have recorded together a new album.

Like the best 70's Airto...very comfortable to slip into. Ear candy. Real nice bass playing, too.

Good to see comments to this Hermeto.

I have a friend that knows Hermeto a lot. He gave me advice to catch this one up.

And I like that.

BTW.: What is the best Airto from 70's? I have Prelude at Loronix. I like that much, green like me. :-)

It that your Best?

Thanks for coming and writing...

Best Airto from the 1970's, in my opinion:

Fingers (especially the quadraphonic 4 channel mix)

Free

Deodato/Airto in Concert (again, the quadraphonic 4 ch. mix is fantastic)

Virgin Land (has Stanley Clarke and George Duke back before they were jaded and hyper-commercial)

I think it's all good stuff from the 1970s, but I'm also a huge fan. Anyway "Identity" has Egberto Gismonti and Wayne Shorter and was produced by Herbie Hancock. That's my pick.
I also like "Promises of the Sun" with Milton Nascimento.

Airto got slightly stale and a little too slick in the 1980s, but his latest music is really good again. Whereas George Duke and Stanley Clarke never recovered, unfortunately!

If you like Hermeto -- and you should -- he's one of the best composers and musicians in the world -- you can find more of his releases at:

And Hermeto has never made a bad album, never went commercial.

Thanks again!

One more thing -- this version of Slaves Mass is very good on its own and essential, but if you like it a lot, there's a new version out on CD with extra tracks, including some very long jams with some of the best Alphonso Johnson on bass you'll ever hear.

Zeca,

Is it 1977 or 1974 you write 74 in the text...

Please elucidate...

I have this one. Bass players are Ron Carter on all sellections except Mixing Pot. There is Alphonso Johnson on it.
About Airto. I really like first 2 LP's from Airto with a lot Hermeto going on.
LP's are: Natural Feelings 1970
Seeds on the Ground 1971
Enjoy.
