Zimbo Trio - Zimbo Trio Vol. 2 (1965)

I took a time today to visit the beach facilities of Pan American Games in Rio de Janeiro. They made a great work on assembling an infrastructure down here; the place is clean, secure and really beautiful. However, there is an exception, the music. We should admit, in the past, the offer was really better. We did not have iPods, CDs, etc. but the music available was fantastic, take this album as an example: there was a time in Brazil that instrumental music, such as this one made by Zimbo Trio, was commercially successful.

I think this is the main reason for the average of 3,000 daily visits Loronix receives everyday. The music available here is truly amazing and this fantastic Caetano Rodrigues contribution is the perfect example.

This is Zimbo Trio - Zimbo Trio Vol. 2 (1965), for RGE, which is the second LP released by Zimbo Trio. There is no much to say about this album, a solid listen from the start until the end. Some friends even say that this one is better then their first album, the "red" one, already released at Loronix. Once again, use comments section to give feedback and also say if you feel the need to get it in looseless format. Tracks include:

Challenge | Who are these artists?

It has been a long time since the last challenge and I'm glad on making it again. This one came from Enrique Dufal, Argentina. Enrique runs the great Recuerdos Musicales. Enrique needs to know who is the artist (1) at the photo with the artist (2) that also appears at the other photo with the artist (3) and (4).

The challenge is to identify artists (1), (2), (3) and (4). I think we can easily help Enrique to identify the only one he does not know, which is artist (1). Seems a little bit confusing this time, but I think we can make it!

Hope uEnjoy!

Samba Exportacao - Samba Exportacao

Hello, Good Evening! Let's start the day with Caetano Rodrigues music, which is a guarantee of surprises and nice enigmas ahead of us. This is the first and only album by Samba Exportacao, which is not exactly a Samba album, but a compilation of instrumental renditions of well-known Brazilian music from the 60's. Let's see.

This is Samba Exportacao - Samba Exportacao (no date), for Itamaraty, a subsidiary of the Brazilian label CID. The only thing I know about Samba Exportacao is Durval Ferreira production. The enigma is the identification of remaining musicians; we have probably the guitar of Durval Ferreira and a great chance of some other well-known organist and sax player, among others. Samba Exportacao delivers good entertainment, each track is different from the other and the studio atmosphere seems to be such like an old friends celebration. Tracks include:

01 - Samba Triste
02 - Quem Manda na Minha Vida
03 - Chorou Chorou
04 - Rosa Morena
05 - Volta
06 - Boato
07 - Corcovado
08 - Zelao
09 - Teleco Teco Nr. 1
10 - Chora Tua Tristeza
11 - Se Voce Disser que Sim
12 - Poema do Adeus

Milton Banana - Milton Banana (1972)

It is impossible to go wrong with Milton Banana, even if the last Milton Banana was made available less than a few days ago. There are some important differences between both albums, this one was never released before at Loronix and the style is completely different with a strong Samba flavor, ideal for the weekend. Let's see.

This is Milton Banana - Milton Banana (1972), for Odeon. Milton Banana from the 70's released albums quite different from the ones we already know from the 60's, based on drums, bass and piano trios. This is Milton Banana as main performer, backed by the traditional bass and piano with addition of guitar, brass and percussion instruments, giving the Samba accent previously mentioned. This is the first out of several Luiz Harding new contributions, a consistent video contributor making his debut on music. Personnel for this album is unfortunately not credited. Tracks include:

01 - Essa Menina (Toquinho / Vinicius de Moraes)
02 - Saltei de Banda (Zé Rodrix / Luis Carlos Sá)
03 - Águas de Março (Tom Jobim)
04 - Minha Escola (Jair Amorim / Evaldo Gouveia)
05 - Caramba Galileu da Galiléia (Jorge Ben "Jorge Benjor")
06 - Samba de Orly (Vinicius de Moraes / Chico Buarque / Toquinho)
07 - Moça Branca da Favela (Jorge Costa)
08 - Encabulada (Antônio Carlos Marques / Jocafi)
09 - Ela (Benito di Paula)
10 - Você Não Tá Com Nada (Silvio César)
11 - Ê Baiana (Fabrício da Silva / Baianinho / Ênio Santos Ribeiro / Miguel Pancrácio)
12 - Testamento (Toquinho / Vinicius de Moraes)

Varios Artistas - Guitar Workshop in Rio (1992)

With this high fever and body pain, I had to dig some pretty old and forgotten music to make things easier for today. The good new is that I found forgotten albums that are really good, such as this one. We have here the Brazilian edition of a JVC (probably a record label run by the Japanese Japan Victor Company) series of guitar workshops around the main countries in the world. Sounds interesting and it is very interest, let's see what we have here.

This is Guitar Workshop in Rio (1992), for JVC, featuring renowned Brazilian violao (acoustic guitar) players. I could not find detailed information on this workshop, but the music recorded here is amazing, delighting both musicians and fans of violao playing. Brazilian Guitar Ensemble is also a mystery as well the cover artwork. I was luck to find the one I made at that time and if someone has the original in high resolution, please, let us know. Tracks include:

Trio Surdina - Trio Surdina (1953)

In that spirit of gradually taking back the control, I think it is perfect to show Loronixers the legendary Trio Surdina debut LP, recorded in 1953, but decades ahead of its time if you take in comparison the music from Brazil in the Bossa Nova years. Take this album as history, such like a document if you want to understand Brazilian music from a broader perspective.

This is Trio Surdina - Trio Surdina (1953), for Musidisc, featuring the "original" Fafa Lemos, Garoto and Chiquinho do Acordeon. I wish I were on a better shape to describe this essential album, but this time you will need to realize it by yourself. A good way to start is taking a close hearing to Duas Contas (Garoto) and O Relogio da Vovo (Fafa Lemos / Garoto / Chiquinho do Acordeon), so you will understand how this album is ahead of everything made in the early 50's. Tracks include:

Personnel

Fafa Lemos
(violin, voice)
Garoto
(violao)
Chiquinho do Acordeon
(accordion)

Track List

01 - Ternamente (J. Lawrence / W. Gross)
02 - O Relógio da Vovó (Fafá Lemos / Chiquinho do Acordeom / Garoto)

04 - Felicidade (Garoto / Haroldo Barbosa)
05 - Ninguém Me Ama (Antônio Maria / Fernando Lobo)
06 - Na Madrugada (Nilo Sergio)
07 - Nós Três (Fafá Lemos / Chiquinho do Acordeom / Garoto)
08 - Malagueña (Tradicional)

Thanks Luiz Harding for this video, Luiz sent a lot of videos and music to us.

That's it. Coming back slowly to do the things right. I'm sure Raulzinho will make you entertained until the next post.

Last minute info by Luiz Harding: Raul de Souza is backed by the Brazilian instrumental ensemble Placa Luminosa, which is Ari Nascimento (bass), Luizao (drums), Ribah Nascimento (guitar) and Rik Escobar (piano).

Maria Bethania - Recital na Boite Barroco (1968)

For those who do not read Portuguese, the previous post announces a Bossa Nova Festival in Rio de Janeiro, a real treat. I will be attending two days, Kiko Continentino with Mauricio Einhorn and Paulinho Trompete tribute to Durval Ferreira. If you live outside Brazil, buy your tickets or use those miles from your airline affinity program, it worth.

Let's close today with a very early album by an important Brazilian female singer, accompanied by Terra Trio on a live presentation on Barroco nightclub, kindly made available to Loronixers by Justin from the great J Thyme...kind.

This is Maria Bethania - Recital na Boate Barroco (1968), for Odeon, featuring Terra Trio. It is amazing how Maria Bethania was already mature in her early years on this live set recorded in 1968. Bethania has the accompaniment of Terra Trio and the repertoire features songs from her brother Caetano Veloso, Gilberto Gil, Noel Rosa, Antonio Carlos Jobim and others. This is the first out of a series of Maria Bethania live albums, which are her best records; she is really amazing performing live. Tracks include:
