MPB-4 - De Palavra em Palavra... (1971)

I don't have info available on Loronixers feedback to MPB-4; perhaps we did not release many albums or made wrong choices. I hope this one corrects any gaps Loronix has with this really important Brazilian vocal group. Thanks to Marcia Webber for showing zecalouro the way to this album, for sure one of the best ones released by MPB-4. I spoke with Caetano about this album and he gave an enthusiastic feedback, which is something that Caetano only gives to the ones that really deserves.

This is MPB-4 - De Palavra... em Palavra... (1971), for Elenco. I’m only disappointed for not having additional information on this session that had Roberto Menescal playing the role of Production Director. The back cover also credits Magro as arranger, but it is not specific if he is also in charge of instrumental arrangements. The repertoire is beautiful, with songs that will keep inside your head after a first hearing. Tracks include:

Personnel

Sadao Watanabe - Elis (1989)

Hello, Good Evening! Great time spent today in Rio de Janeiro receiving some Loronix friends from Sao Paulo. Sunny day we are having, such like summertime. Let's start today with a contribution sent by the friends from Sao Paulo and highly recommended. Let's see.

This is Sadao Watanabe - Elis (1989), for BMG. Sadao Watanabe is a Japanese sax player with strong connections with the music from Brazil, releasing several albums dedicated to our country, most of them recorded here. This one is a perfect example, a tribute to Elis Regina featuring Cesar Camargo Mariano, Heitor TP, Paulinho Braga, Nico Assumpcao, Papeti and the most frequent Sadao Watanabe Brazilian collaborator, Toquinho as special guest on two tracks. I had a little time to hear this album and review it to Loronixers, but it is highly recommended by many reviewers and I cannot wait to take a second hearing. Tracks include:

Claudia - Deixa eu Dizer (1973)

Hello, Good Evening! This is the first out of three non-working days in Brazil. Everybody left the city to quiet places, coming back on Sunday night or Monday. I like these big weekends, people leave to quiet places and Rio de Janeiro stays, how can I say, quiet. I took a time today to climb a military facility close to my place, which is Pedra do Leme. The place has a Fort with several cannons to protect the city. Obviously, the Fort is no longer working, but the military use to put some cannons in service once in a while, such as today. Wow, my ears still have problem by the cannon noise, but the day was really nice. You can follow this link to know more about the spot.

Let's take advantage of these low traffic days to release some very old wants and needs of Loronixers, starting with this one that really worth your attention.

This is Claudia - Deixa eu Dizer (1973), for Odeon. Little I know about this album, except it is the most successful LP recorded by this Brazilian singer, featuring songs by her own and others from Caetano Veloso, Ivan Lins, Gonzaguinha, Antonio Carlos Jobim, Dorival Caymmi and others. Tracks include:

01 - Noite de Verão (Cláudia / Raul Telles)
02 - Esse Cara (Caetano Veloso)
03 - A Fonte Secou (Monsueto / Tufic Lauar / Marcléo)
04 - O Circo (Pregão Circense) (Zé Dantas)
05 - Você Não Sabe Amar (Dorival Caymmi / Carlos Guinle / Hugo Lima)
06 - Agora Quem Sorri Sou Eu (Cláudia / Cristiê)
07 - Só Que Deram Zero Pro Bedeu (Luis Vagner)
08 - Deixa Eu Dizer (Ivan Lins / Ronaldo Monteiro de Souza)
09 - Chega de Saudade (Tom Jobim / Vinicius de Moraes)
10 - Apartamento na Cidade (Cláudia / Raul Telles)
11 - Bela (Raul Telles / Raul Esteves)
12 - Pois É Seu Zé (Gonzaguinha)

Zimbo Trio - Zimbo Trio (1978)

I hope the problems that happened yesterday with the last post of the day are over, since this one really deserves a flawless exhibition. If you were looking for this album, you should say thanks to Loronixer Marcos, he was the one that told me this LP was a Zimbo Trio career album.

Shame on zecalouro. He always thought this was a compilation with music taken from other records; perhaps this simple cover artwork was not inspiring enough to get my attention. Anyway, thanks Marcos, you made me understand that I had a Zimbo Trio career album that I never heard and also never released at Loronix.

This is Zimbo Trio - Zimbo Trio (1978), for Clam / Continental, featuring Zimbo Trio original formation and several special guest of not, such as Heraldo do Monte and the son of the clarinetist Domingos Pecci, Eduardo Pecci, also known as Lambari from Quarteto Lambari. Pretty self-explanatory. I will let you with personnel listing and tracks. Um bom final de semana prolongado aos amigos do Brasil. Tracks include:

Ivan Casanova e Seus Conjuntos - Melodias Celebres do Cinema

Remember an album released in February 2007 featuring an organist known as Ivan Casanova that later on we realize it was Walter Wanderley? If you do not remember, just follow this link and you are set, here. I thought that was the only album recorded by this Ivan Casanova nickname at Imperial label. However, I found another one and I thought it was another great thing to have another never heard Walter Wanderley album.

Unfortunately, no organ and no Walter Wanderley this time. In the other hand, the album is really good, on that Para Dancar style, but really above the average and deserves to be available to our community. Let's see.

This is Ivan Casanova e Seus Conjuntos - Melodias dos Filmes Celebres (no date), for Imperial. A very well played album with songs from movie soundtracks, different from the earlier Ivan Casanova. My highlights go to sax, piston and trombone, very well played, probably by well-known musicians. Tracks include:

01 - Singing in the Rain
02 - Blue Skies
03 - An Affair to Remember
04 - Ebb Tide
05 - Unchained Melody
06 - Around the World
07 - Be my Love
08 - Stella by Starlight
09 - Over the Rainbow
10 - Love is a Tender Trap
11 - High Society
12 - Whatever Will Be, Will Be

Dolores Duran - 78rpm | Copacabana 5488 (1955)

Here we go on something never made before, the first album in the 78rpm format at Loronix. How these records spin fast! Since we are starting in the new format, a great artist was selected, Dolores Duran, backed by orchestra and performing two songs.

This is Dolores Duran - 78rpm | 5488 (1955), for Copacabana. Let's feedback this release. I'm making available at Rapidshare as "Type 1", which is a direct link to the album with no waiting time, just to make easy your evaluation. I think it is a good idea to release one or two per week. Tracks include:

01 - Nao se Avexe, Nao (Francisco Anysio / Haydee Paula) - Baiao
02 - Nossos Destinos (Luiz Vieira) - Toada

A Cor do Som - Ao Vivo, Montreux International Jazz Festival (1979)

Hello, Good Evening! I want to start the day with something new and really unique, which is the legendary and pioneer instrumental / vocal band A Cor do Som. How many friends who live outside Brazil had the chance to hear or even know the existence of this group? Probably less than a half by this parrot estimates, actually, these guys made wonderful things and I think they deserve much more recognition.

Some friends in Brazil would say they do not belong to Loronix, but I think they are even a missing piece. A Cor do Som blends several different styles with the strength of never loosing focus on Brazilian music. They mix jazz, rock, progressive, frevo, samba, baiao, MPB and are great performers as instrumental or vocal group. I'm showing A Cor do Som album that has only instrumental tracks and I'm sure that later we will be amazed when hearing them singing as a vocal group.

This is A Cor do Som - Ao Vivo, no Montreux Internacional Jazz Festival (1979), for Warner, featuring the original formation with Mu (keyboards), Dadi (bass), Armandinho (guitarra baiana), Aroldo (guitarra baiana), Gustavo (drums) and Ary (percussion). Armandinho is the same renowned guitarist, inventor of the guitarra baiana, an electrified version of cavaquinho. Someone said this week that every Montreux Festival cut is worth checking. This one really rocks. Tracks include:

Mu

Turibio Santos - Villa Lobos (1971)

Hello, Good Evening! I was browsing past statistics today and I noticed those few classical music albums releases in the past month had a great interest of our community. I'm talking about Encontro, the collaboration between Clara Sverner, Turibio Santos, Paulo Moura and Olivia Byington, Turibio Santos first LP for Caravelle and Maria Lucia Godoy, O Canto da Amazonia with Neco's guitar. The numbers are really surprising with Maria Lucia Godoy and Turibio Santos being the leaders. Let's make Loronix goes classical again.

This is Turibio Santos - Villa Lobos (1971), for MIS and issued by RCA Victor, the second Turibio Santos tribute to the Brazilian Maestro Heitor Villa Lobos, recorded in Paris. This is a truly beautiful record, Side A has Turibio Santos accompanied by Orquestra de Camara Jean-Francois Paillard, featuring flute, oboe, sax, celesta and harp, performing Sexteto Mistico, composed by Villa Lobos in 1917. Side B is Turibio Santos guitar performing alone five Villa Lobos preludios. It is hard to say which is the nicest side, but I had a slight preference for Side B, it is very nice to hear Turibio Santos performing alone. I urge Loronixers to feedback this release using comments section. Tracks include:

Les 4 Cadillacs - Doucement, Mon Amour (1962)

Since the first month of Loronix, several friends have been asking for an album by this Brazilian group Les 4 Cadillacs, a creation of Nilo Sergio, Musidisc owner. The reason is the presence of Ed Lincoln at the piano on every album by this quartet. Since then, I found the first and decided to wait for the second, when I found the second I thought it was better waiting for the third. This is the third one, slight better than the others, just for Ed Lincoln fans and completionists.

This is Les 4 Cadillacs - Doucement, Mon Amour... (1962), for Masterpiece Master, Musidisc subsidiary, featuring Ed Lincoln at the piano and the other remain not credited Cadillacs at bass, drums and guitar. The quartet performs an easy listening repertoire based on American and French music. As I said before, this is fans and completionists stuff. Tracks include:

12 - Moon River (J. Mercer / Henry Mancini)

Paulinho da Viola - Paulinho da Viola (1971)

Yesterday, I was very tired and just felt asleep without making the last post. I woke up this morning with more than a few messages of friends worried about me. I dedicate this post to theses friends. They are from a special group of Loronixers that keep contact with me using email or instant messaging until the final post, giving feedback and support.

This is Paulinho da Viola - Paulinho da Viola (1971), for Odeon. Guess who is the arranger of another above the average Paulinho da Viola album? Just look at the previous post to get the answer, Lindolfo Gaya, in charge of all tracks. Paulinho da Viola is one of the most sophisticated Samba interpreter and composer I have ever seen, thanks to a special friend among the group of "late at night friends", he was responsible for introducing to zecalouro Paulinho da Viola, which I have special pleasure introducing to all Loronix community. Tracks include:
